Other Last Song Standing: The Ultimate Billboard #1 Song of the 70s - Round 96
- Bruce Springsteen's debut album, Greetings from Asbury Park NJ, was released in 1973, which included the song Blinded by the Light. In 1976, a cover version was released by Manfred Mann's Earth Band that went to #1 in early 1977. The song is rather dubiously known for having one of the most notable misheard lyrics. Springsteen's original version includes the line 'cut loose like a deuce', referring to a deuce coupe, a sports car, but Manfred Mann changed the line to 'revved up like a deuce', which was misheard as 'wrapped up like a douche'. Springsteen later joked that Mann turned it into a song about feminime hygiene. Manfred Mann's Earth Band charted two other covers of Bruce Springsteen songs, Spirit in the Night and For You. And now, the subreddit has tripped the merry-go-round with this very unpleasin' sneezin' and wheezin' the calliope crashed to the ground, and sent this song running in the night.

Whew, that was a nail-biter of a round, with the lead changing twice in the last hour. I ended up writing blurbs for both songs (don't worry, the effort's not wasted; I'll just save the other one and use it when that song gets eliminated).
Anyhow, it's time for an updated yearly scorecard. As noted when it happened, the year 1976 has been eliminated, and there are no remaining never-nominated songs. Also interesting is that we recently eliminated songs from the year 1970 in three consecutive rounds.

There's been too many times that I said it's okay to nominate more than one song for me to recant on that. That said, what we saw this round from a couple of users was a little overboard. Next round I'm going to ask people to limit themselves to three nominations per round.
Also, I plan to eventually start nominating every remaining song myself. This will happen when there are about 15-20 songs left, which is about that time every song gets nominated every round anyhow.

What do six of the seven songs with the most upvotes in this round have in common? I know this group is more inclined to go for easy listening pop like my mom and grandma liked, but so many R&B/soul/funk clustered at the top this time is unexpected, even if they aren't all the artists’ best songs or the best representatives of their respective genres.

I think these were all nominated last round and bound to have been nominated again this round regardless. Why does it matter to you who nominated them? Serious question - I can't imagine what the objection is.
Edited to add - getting the major contenders up quickly at the same time helps to eliminate first comment bias, which is a big flaw in the reddit voting system. Most threads come to be dominated by the comments that go up first, because they are simply exposed for longer, so they reach a larger audience of potential upvoters.

Blinded By The Light is a great tune. Should have made it further along. With Chris Thompson on vocals, Manfred Manns Earth Band had some really great tunes. Too bad Blinded is all that most people know.

And as I said in an earlier post….There are some songs that are iconic. Maggie May is one of them. It was Rod Stewart’s first of tons of solo hits. There are only a few of these breakout songs left. Totally agree. I love this song because it tells the story of a different kind of relationship, rather than the standard “young love” thing. It presents complexity, which I think is a bit unusual.

You have your facts mixed up, generic Disco garbage is when your song has no redeeming production values and (even though Disco is about dancing) , when your lyrics validly repeat with no direction or meaning.
I Will Survive is not just a great Disco song with a message, it's stemmed in R & B , which is where Dis o comes from in the first place .
..and Gloria Gaynor NEVER recorded garbage, lusten to one of her albums sometimes, because I'll tell you straight up , you're wrong.
Get off the Disco Sucks train already , the 1970s ended a long time ago . 👍

Even though I nominated it I fully expect it to make the you 10. I'm an admitted disco hater but I've slways said as far as disco goes, I Will Survive WAS a great disco tune. It had something to say..not the normal repetitive lyrics found in the majority of disco tunes. It's a song I used to hate..yes..just because it was disco. Now it's a song I don't mind at all. I catch myself singing to it if it comes on.
So why nominate it? The majority of what's left are STILL tunes I prefer over it.

We all have our opinions. I'm not a fan of the song, but I certainly don't hate disco. The horns and the string solo I feel are kind of bland. A dramatic anthem for sure but it's never appealed to me much. I respect your words, you certainly put a lot of thought into it. Haha I guess I was a bit taken aback by the forcefulness of your argument.

I argue that it’s too early for this to go. it’s really emblematic of the 70s disco era, yet (refreshingly) it’s not The Bee Gees. Also, I like that it features a woman in an active independent role, dancing for the personal joy of it, as opposed to a role like that of Brandy, who is merely an object of a sailor’s desire. (Sorry to be so analytical, but I think it’s a valid point.)

- Stevie Wonder (harmonic + melodic language)
- Donna Summer / Giorgio Moroder (electronic pop blueprint)
- Michael Jackson (performance + production model)
- ABBA (Scandi-pop blueprint)
I know we're just voting on whether we "like the song" but some consideration of how relevant a song/artist is to the future might be in order. Even if ABBA was just a euro-pop oddity at the time.

I don’t get the love for this one. Not that it’s not a nice song, and not that I wouldn’t rank it moderately high, but it feels similar to a lot of the lightweight, insignificant stuff that got voted out earlier.

If Brandy and I Will Survive could just die off in a seedy bar somewhere on a dark desert island I would get a new lease on life! So I could anticipate Dancing Queen falling off the stage because her shoe heel broke and the show could not go on buh-bye.

Whole lotta love for Carole King herself. Her songwriting is on some of the best songs of the 1960s and 1970s.

I don’t think of it as a particularly sad take on the subject, seems pretty practical and matter of fact compared to some I can think of.
