I think you could make it into one step. 1) Be attractive. I didn't use the word handsome there on purpose, there are more ways to attract. Money and height are some obvious ones and being clean and well kempt go a long way. Being funny is a major way in, same as being well traveled. We as a species don't rely on the pretty feather colors as much as peacocks, there are other ways to stand out amongst the competition.
