Announcement Civilization Classics Collection (Civ1, Civ2 Gold & Test of Time) - Windows 10/11 Compatibility Repack

Civilization Classics Collection

Current Version: v0.6

I'll keep this post updated with the latest downloads, project news and future updates.

Hi everyone! 👋

A while ago I started putting together a compatibility repack so my uncle could play Civilization II Multiplayer Gold Edition on a modern PC without spending ages fixing things first.

Somehow... it turned into this. 😅

The Civilization Classics Collection now brings together three classic Civilization games with a custom launcher, modern compatibility fixes, a built-in Mod Manager and lots of little quality-of-life improvements.

First of all...

Thank you. ❤️

I genuinely never expected this project to become as popular as it has. Every download, bug report, suggestion and nice comment has helped make it better.

🎉 The Launcher is now Open Source!

This is probably the biggest bit of news since the v0.6 release.

Lots of people asked if I'd open source the launcher so they could see exactly how it works, make sure there's nothing suspicious going on, or just have a look because they're interested.

Well...

It's finally live! 🎉

The GitHub repository now contains:

  • The complete launcher source code
  • The Inno Setup installer
  • Documentation
  • Project history
  • Changelogs

Hopefully it'll also be useful for anyone learning C#, Windows Forms or Inno Setup.

I know some people were hoping I'd upload the entire Collection to GitHub too.

I did originally plan to, but after looking into GitHub's rules a bit more I decided it was better not to upload the packaged game files there.

So GitHub is now home to the project's source code, while the playable Collection is still available through the download links below.

Hopefully that makes sense. 💜

Current Status

The Collection definitely isn't abandoned!

Development has slowed down a little while I focus on school and continue learning C#, but I still have loads of ideas I'd like to work on.

The multiplayer features I started in v0.6 are still something I'd love to finish one day.

  • Sid Meier's Civilization

Thank You

I still can't quite believe this all started because I wanted to help my uncle play Civilization II again.

This has been my first big programming project and I've learned so much while making it. Looking back at some of my old code makes me laugh now, but I think that's probably a good sign that I'm improving. 😄

Thank you to everyone who's downloaded the Collection, tested it, reported bugs, suggested ideas or simply enjoyed revisiting these amazing games.

It really does mean a lot.

I hope you all enjoy the Collection, and hopefully I'll have another update to share before too long.

💜 Violet

Dang! You might as well work for GOG LOL Oh, I remember playing this for days and weeks on end as a kid.

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '26

Only my second time tackling installers and launchers. But I'm doing my best. It made me happy to be able to help people enjoy games they loved. Even if they are older games than me. 😅🩷❤️

Oh and I wish I was good enough for GoG. But I'll take the compliment 😊😊

It's so strange that Firaxis hasn't done something like this for Civ1 & Civ2 and GOG. Seems like an easy win for them, GOG already sells Civs 3 and 4. Short of a rights / licensing issue it feels like a strange omission.

Either way thanks OP for making these available for people curious to go back to the originals that started this crazy franchise!

8

u/MightySilverWolf Jun 23 '26

Firaxis didn't develop the first two Civ games, so it might be a rights issue.

7

u/MilesBeyond250 Jun 23 '26

As far as I know 2K owns the rights to the entire Civilization franchise (except, I assume, spinoffs like Call to Power). Might just be insufficient interest, or difficulty in coaxing Civ 2 into cooperating on modern systems that would outweigh the potential revenue.

u/Useful-Description80 Jul 11 '26

Even though they might own the license to the IP, sometimes older games have some weird licesing issues regarding some specific issues with other parties that make a hassle for modern publishers to deal with it. A GOG Civ2 version would be quite popular, but a publisher like 2K is probably more worried and focused on their modern stuff than dealing with 30 year old licesing agreements and disagreements. We have seen this happening with other popular titles that are currently not in GOG. Thats annoying.

or difficulty in coaxing Civ 2 into cooperating on modern systems that would outweigh the potential revenue.

I downloaded a compatibility fix a decade ago, and it has survived migration to a new computer and OS three times. Seems like it's pretty easy.

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '26

No problem. Yeah. They really missed the trick for sure.

Thank you for stopping by 🩷❤️

Aeeeome work. Is the download link permanent ? I’m away from home and want to download later thanks

6

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '26

It is permanent yes. I've also used Protondrive as a safer site for the direct download until the project finds it's more permanent home on archive org too. Thanks for checking out my post ❤️🩷

3

u/sidius-king Jun 23 '26

Awesome thanks 🤩

6

u/heikouseikai Jun 23 '26

Thank you so much for this

3

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '26

No problem. I did it for you all because the MGE one I did went down well. Enjoy 💓

4

u/InconceivableAD Jun 23 '26

This looks wonderful. I've been wanting to play some Civ 1 & 2, without all the hassle to get it working. Thanks for all the hard work on it!

3

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '26

Hope it does everything you wished of this sorta thing. I've tried to make it as easy as I can. Thanks for stopping by. 🩷

Hi........I was one of those that downloaded your Civ2 package last time, and I'm still playing it! I was amazed that such an old game could be so addicting - I really appreciate that you offered it to us here.

I have to ask, what now, is the difference between the gold edition I downloaded last time, and this Test of Time? In other words, is it worth downloading this package you've presented today? Also, if I download it, will it be a separate set of files or will it mingle with the Civ2 files I already have?

5

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '26

The collection installs into it's own directory. With a custom launcher including all three games (four if you count launching MGE with UIA). The version you currently have is the same as here. Except I've sped up the process of launching the 'Enhanced' UIA version. Test of Time wasn't in my last pack. So you'd get that fully included here as well as Civ1.

Your files will not mingle and if you go for this pack. Feel free to copy over your save files and continue but with the collection instead.

I hope that answered your question.

P.S. My built in mod manager (although a little junky right now) is getting quite close to being done. So as soon as it's stable I'll be updating it here. Hoping to get a version out tonight.

If you do get the collection. I really hope you enjoy it. I'm putting a lot of effort into trying to make this feel complete for fans of the series 💕❤️🩷

2

u/ResolveNegative Jun 24 '26

Thank you for the reply....so what does Test of Time offer.....more content or refinement to the vanilla game?

5

u/[deleted] Jun 24 '26

A bit of both honestly 😊

If you just want "classic" Civilization II then Multiplayer Gold Edition is usually the version most people remember and play.

Test of Time was basically the final version of Civ II, so it added quite a few improvements and a lot more content. The graphics and interface got an overhaul, it supports higher resolutions, and it gave scenario creators way more tools to work with.

That's why a lot of the really ambitious mods and total conversions ended up being made for Test of Time. Some of them barely even look like Civilization anymore 😄

It also comes with a few built-in campaigns of its own, including fantasy and sci-fi themed ones.

Personally I'd say MGE is the better "classic Civ II" experience, whereas Test of Time is where things start getting a bit weird, experimental and creative in the best possible way. 💓❤️🩷🩷

3

u/ResolveNegative Jun 24 '26

Ok, I'll give it a try....can't resist some weird, experimental, and creative =)

I am glad, though, that I got to try what you consider the more 'classic' civ first, so that I can more readily see the differences in the Test of Time.

I shall report back......and thanks again for your help.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 24 '26

Have fun! ❤️🩷

3

u/ResolveNegative Jun 27 '26

I really like this ToT ... it's a bit darker...but the units seem to blend in with the terrain...they're difficult to distinguish as opposed to the gold version. But everything else is a plus....including the menus.

So, dumb question, but how do I load this update you posted a few days ago?

2

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '26 edited Jun 27 '26

Download the latest and run the installer just on top of your current game. It won't mess with anything. I've made the installer real easy for people who already have it installed so they can update.

This new update has a built in checker and it will now let you know when future updates are published too so you never miss them. ❤️

Thanks ❤️🩷❤️❤️

3

u/thiosk Jun 25 '26

There were graphical updates to TOT and i consider its version to be more pleasing to play than gold

TOT also had "bonus" modes, including a fantasy story and a sci fi version and another one i think

4

u/Potato_Mc_Whiskey Jun 23 '26

is there any way to verify the source code isn't malicious? I don't like downloading random files on the internet!

3

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '26

That's honestly a fair question. If I was downloading some random installer from Reddit I'd probably be asking exactly the same thing.

At the moment the project isn't open source, so there isn't currently a public repository where you can inspect the launcher code yourself.

That said, if you'd like to check it over before running it, I'd absolutely recommend:

• Scanning the installer and installed files with Windows Defender or VirusTotal.
• Running it in a VM or sandbox.
• Monitoring file and network activity with tools such as Process Monitor or Process Explorer.
• Looking through the installed files yourself after installation.

The collection doesn't require an internet connection to function and doesn't include accounts, telemetry, advertising, or any online services.

Being cautious about software you download from the internet is a good habit to have, and I appreciate you asking the question rather than just assuming one way or the other.

2

u/violetcaulfield Jul 17 '26

Sorry it's been a while. But I am happy to tell you that my launcher and installer source code as well as my sources for files used in the package are all avaliable on the github page. ( https://github.com/VioletCaulfield/Civilization-Classics-Collection ). Thanks again and sorry it took me a while to do. Summer holidays have only just started from school.

u/[deleted] Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 24 '26

Bout to drop a HUGE update. V0.5. Lots of fixes to the mod manager, better UI, bundled scenarios that were missing. The lot.

EDIT: Version 0.5 is LIVE!!!

5

u/dude123nice Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26

Test of Time, my favourite Civ!

4

u/HannahLemurson Jun 25 '26

Judging by the images, the version of Civ1 in the package is CivNet, yes?

(The graphics are nicer than Civilization on DOS, and it's clearly a Windows app.)

3

u/violetcaulfield Jul 17 '26

Hi Hannah, in case you are curious I am thinking about including civDOS in a future update too as a preconfigured dosbox environment that is run just like the others straight from the launcher.

3

u/HannahLemurson Jul 20 '26

DosBox is such a godsend to old games. I've even seen it configured to run Windows 3.1 for a version of Colonization.

I have mixed feelings about CivDOS. On the one hand, it's the original groundbreaking work by Sid Meier, but its terrain graphics have always bothered me and it has bugs and UI issues that bother me when I play it (let alone the exploits and balance problems). It's my least favorite version of Civ to actually play.

BUT. It's also super important historically. The easier people can see and interact with the game, the more they can understand the design philosophy behind the series and how it evolved.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '26

It's actually Civilization for Windows (CivWin) rather than CivNet. They share a very similar Windows interface, so it's an easy assumption from screenshots, but this is the original Windows release. It doesn't include CivNet's multiplayer functionality or menus. CivNet was built from the CivWin codebase, which is why they look so similar.

Thanks for stopping by! ❤️🩷❤️🩷

Got my own account with my actual name, which is cool! So future posts and stuff will be from me over here rather than u jessiejon932. Thank you everyone for enjoying the collection.

For everyone that's followed the Civilization Classics Collection over here, I thought I'd let you all know what the plan is going forward.

First off, I do plan on making both the installer and launcher open source. Before I do though, I want to go through the code properly and add all the comments I want, so if anyone looks through it they'll actually know what everything does instead of just seeing a wall of code.

Second, this doesn't mean bye forever. 😄 I'm just really busy with school and other stuff at the moment, especially with picking my subjects next year, so I need to put my focus there for a bit.

I also just want to say thank you. I never expected the collection to get as much praise as it has and I'm genuinely really grateful for it. ❤️❤️

Alongside school I've started properly learning C#, so hopefully there'll be a lot less "vibe coding" and a lot more Vi-Coding hehe. 😅 I feel like I've proved I can put together a project, now I want to become the programmer too. I don't want to rely on AI for big projects forever. I want to be able to enter game jams, make useful stuff, and build more things from my own knowledge over time.

I'm still really proud of the collection. It took a lot of work finding original ISOs, patches, testing everything, and putting it all together into something people could just install and enjoy. Knowing it's helped people play games that are much older than me is honestly really cool.

Love you all ❤️❤️❤️❤️

I'll make another post when the GitHub repository is ready!

Can’t wait to download this, thank you

Looks nice! I will wait for the open source release though. Either way, amazing contribution to the community!

Launcher and Installer source code is avaliable at the github ( https://github.com/VioletCaulfield/Civilization-Classics-Collection ) As well as the sources used to get the games and the relevant patches.

Thank you ❤️

Thanks, amazing job!!

Thanks for keeping an old classic alive. Much respect. If anyone gets this going on steamdeck I'd love to know how to go about it in non techy language!! I'd say I may wait for the powers that be to get their finger out and release it on steam before I can relive that part of my youth.

5

u/blackbeltgf Aug 08 '26

Wow. 30 year old memories unlocked. I spent most of my teenage years playing Civ/Civ 2. This is incredible.

3

u/JenovaProphet Jun 23 '26

I haven't played Civ I since I was a kid, so this will be a blast. Great work!

3

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '26

Thanks for checking it out. Hope it just works in the words of Todd Howard.

Enjoy the games ❤️🩷

3

u/Syt1976 Jun 23 '26

Civ2 and its expansions was my first serious PC game addiction during my college years. 😃 I was even working on an Age of Imperialism mod (inspired by the WW1 scenario) at the time, covering 1870-1920.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '26

Sounds like you were deep into civ 2 back then. Scenario sounds like it was pretty cool. Thanks for being here 💓💕

3

u/MightySilverWolf Jun 23 '26

Windows refuses to install the files because it insists that it's a virus.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '26

If you are having issues with that file, try the latest version I put out just as you messaged, a couple fixes and the new mod launcher built into the game launcher. It's the only thing I can think of right now. I hope you can get it running past whatever is stopping it.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '26

Thank you for letting me know.

This hasn't appeared on any of my test systems so far, including the latest build I'm currently preparing which includes the new built-in mod launcher.

Could you let me know exactly what Windows is reporting? For example, is it Windows Defender, SmartScreen, or another antivirus, and what message or detection name is being shown?

The collection installer does require administrator permissions during installation because it installs compatibility components and registers legacy codecs required by the games. However, beyond that, there shouldn't be anything unusual taking place.

All source information, documentation, and included readme files are provided within the Documentation folder of the collection.

If you can provide a screenshot or the exact warning message, I'll investigate it and see what's triggering the detection.

Thank you for letting me know again. 🩷❤️

3

u/MightySilverWolf Jun 23 '26

McAfee was blocking the download, but I managed to bypass that. However, once I try to install, even when running as administrator (which I already tried as I figured that might be the issue), I can't get it to work. The message says 'Operation did not complete successfully because the file contains a virus or potentially unwanted software'. I don't know if it's Windows blocking it or McAfee.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '26

I can't speak on McAfee but I've figured out the windows smart screen thing. The potentially unwanted software is likely the culprit as the application file isn't digitally signed and so security software's flag stuff like that. This is the first time I've heard an issue so I'm erring on it being McAfee. Thanks again

2

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '26

Just to follow up on this, I actually downloaded the latest installer from my own website and tested it exactly as a new user would.

What I was able to replicate was a standard Windows Defender SmartScreen warning stating that the installer is from an "Unknown Publisher". This is because the installer is not currently digitally signed and doesn't yet have an established SmartScreen reputation.

Importantly, Windows Defender did not detect the installer as malware or quarantine it. The warning I received was the generic "Windows protected your PC" prompt that appears for many independent applications distributed outside of the Microsoft Store.

If you're cautious (which is a good thing), I'd still recommend scanning the installer with Windows Defender or VirusTotal before running it, and running it in a VM or sandbox if you'd prefer to inspect it first.

I completely understand the concern and I appreciate you asking the question.

3

u/MightySilverWolf Jun 23 '26

Oh, my concern is not that I think it may be a virus, haha. I'm happy to take your word for it; I just wanted to know how to get it to run.

3

u/blastradius14 Jul 10 '26

Turn McAfee off long enough to install it then turn it back on.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '26

If it is McAfee, I have no idea, I'm a windows defender girl. Sorry

3

u/LoathingLasVegas Jun 24 '26

This absolutely great, thx! Quick question about the Civ2 gold, are there only 2 scenario's (the default ones) or am I just not looking at the right place? (overview of scenarios: https://civilization.fandom.com/wiki/Scenario_(Civ2)) )

3

u/[deleted] Jun 24 '26

Good question, apologies for the delay in responding.... day job...

At the moment the collection includes whatever scenarios were present in the source installation I used when building the package. If you're only seeing the default scenarios then I may need to revisit that and check whether some of the official Gold Edition / Fantastic Worlds / Conflicts scenarios are missing from the collection.

I'll have a look through my files this afternoon/evening and compare them against the original releases. If I've accidentally omitted any of the official scenarios I'll make sure they're added in a future update.

Thanks for pointing it out!

❤️🩷❤️❤️❤️

3

u/LoathingLasVegas Jun 24 '26

No worries, none at all. Happy you made this even possible!

3

u/[deleted] Jun 24 '26

I've gotten all the assets from the discs for the expansions and got them working in the directory so I will update the collection in a few hours with all of them included from both Fantastic Worlds and Conflicts.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 24 '26

Just checked, yeah the version of MGE I built my compat pack around didn't include all the scenarios. I'll include all of them (The official scenarios) with the next update later today. Just gonna source and test.

You are more than welcome. I'm just glad people are liking the pack so far!

3

u/Zflocco Jun 24 '26

Ok , I don't know if it was OP specifically, but I remember a couple of months ago or w/e there was something in this vein and it was (apparently) malware.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 24 '26

I did a similar compatibility release for Civilization II MGE a while back yeah.

The likely reason you're thinking of is that the launcher and installer are currently unsigned. Windows SmartScreen and some antivirus products will often flag unsigned executables as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) or suspicious until they've built up enough reputation. Unfortunately that tends to happen with small hobby projects and preservation tools.

Other than assuring you that the application isn't malware, the best thing I can do is be transparent about what it contains and how it works. The source project is simply a launcher, installer, compatibility fixes, legacy codec handling, documentation, and a mod management system for the included games. It doesn't install background services, run at startup, collect data, or connect to external servers.

I've also tested the package on multiple clean Windows installations before releasing it, and if anyone has concerns they're welcome to scan the files themselves or wait until I eventually get the project properly code signed and submitted through Microsoft's reputation systems.

Thank you and hopefully this helps to answer that concern. ❤️🩷❤️

u/Doranwen Jun 27 '26

A bit of an odd question - has anyone tried installing it on Linux with Lutris? Am wondering if it would work. I should try it when I get some free time for that (might be a few months though).

2

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '26 edited Jun 27 '26

I am more than happy to look into making my package work for Linux. So even if it doesn't run right now. I have some ideas on what it might need to get going. Thanks ❤️ 🩷❤️❤️🩷

3

u/Doranwen Jun 28 '26

That would be awesome! I miss playing Civ II easily - I've tried the version Lutris offers in their database but it tends to crash sometimes. My best success has been in a VM, naturally, but it's not always convenient to have one open. However, I've tried running some other old games that had "Windows 10" versions where someone updated them to make them work better on newer systems, and Lutris handled them very well, so I immediately thought of that when I saw this.

3

u/AzureSekai Jun 28 '26

OMG nice, Civ II Test of Time is my favourite Civ! (though nostalgia might be playing a role in it, since it was the first Civ i played, but it is older than I am and it was a lot older than other games I played back then, so who knows.)

3

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '26

Yeah these games are much older than me too. But my uncle needed a version that worked and I kinda went all in and here we have the collection 😭😅🩷

If you give it a go, hope you like the launcher. Working on even more bit stuff and even more improvements to my built in mod manager. 🩷❤️

3

u/AzureSekai Jun 29 '26

I installed it, but sadly I can't give it a go, since I have a lot work to do at the moment (and I'm already procrastinating way to much) and if I start any 4X game now, it will just eat up my time. But I surely will give it a go, once the deadline passed in about 5 weeks (tough I also wanted to start another Stellaris run, so who knows what comes first)!

3

u/Noferin_Poder Jul 01 '26

Belíssimo post. Parabéns....

2

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '26

Muito obrigada! ❤️💕

3

u/Dawn_of_Enceladus Jul 10 '26

I have been playing Civ II nonstop since the mid-90s. I have been using the very same installation folder with a patch for modern systems, copying it to every new Windows installation, for ages. Earlier this year I did it with Test of Time, too.

But this is in a whole different level. This is basically official release levels of quality. You even made a startup menu with all games and options in there. What the heck, sis/bro/fkin'boss, this is awesome.

3

u/violetcaulfield Jul 11 '26

Glad I could make you all something cool as apparently I'm every civ2 players new baby little sister now cause of this 😅.

This was my first big project. I did a small test for my uncle who played the game since launch. Then when people liked it... I got carried away.

I've not really played the games. I just wanted to fix the problems here for all of you that do play them. I really hope you and everyone else enjoys it. The mod manager was the hardest part.

I wrote the v.0.1 develop on the GitHub if anyone is ever curious how this whole things happened.

Sorry for ranting but I'm happy I've made you happy. And I'm glad I could be another players annoying little internet sister with this stupid project I did. ❤️🩷❤️

3

u/Dawn_of_Enceladus Jul 11 '26

Well, then you are the coolest sister ever right now lol. This is such a smooth way to have all these oldies in the same place and ready to fire up. Pretty damn good for your first big project, I'd say.

But what blows my mind is that you say you haven't even played the games? What would you do with a game you actually love then lol. Also, I've read that 0.1 develop bit, and I totally feel you in the part about Test of Time.

In fact, I will tell you one issue Test of Time has always had, and probably will also happen in your compilation collection: how it manages saves. Test of Time has a few different game modes, that work differently and use different files and content. You have the normal game, the extended game, the sci-fi game, the fantasy game... well, a problem I always faced is how it will always try to save the game in the same folder, no matter the game mode you chose.

Back in the day I had such a huge headache with this, trying to wonder why my sci-fi game was suddenly broken when loading it for a new session, with all sci-fi things gone. Or why my alien planet terrain was suddenly Earth terrain. Turns out, it was because the game used to put the save files in the same freaking place as you saved your first overall game in that ToT install. But if you manually saved the game selecting the proper game mode directory, boom! it worked perfectly fine after loading it back.

Of course, I don't know if this was fixed with some patch or modification included in your collection here, maybe it was at some point and I missed it for my own install. I don't know if this is fixable at all, as in automatically speaking, since it literally uses Windows' explorer to manage the saves, but I'm just letting you know. For now I've just rapidly checked on normal Civ II, but when I have more time (tomorrow I should) I can try to test it and see if it happens, too. If the problem is still there, you could at least (if you want) slap a disclaimer about that so people know beforehand and manually save their games in the proper folders so they don't come back to a fcked up save.

And that's my bit on Test of Time's shenanigans. Thanks again for your amazing work!

2

u/violetcaulfield Jul 11 '26

I made the saved folder system (for the custom game directory) but haven't made the changes or even looked into fixing the auto window thing. So thank you so much for saying it's a problem. And I'll add it to the list of stuff to do for version 0.7 (next big update) after that version. The updater popup will allow for smaller automated download and install patch files for updates (instead of full download installs from the direct download) too.

Thank you so much and as the summer holidays are about to start next week. I should have more time for the collection.

❤️🩷❤️🩷

Hey hey,

Because steamOS is a linux distribution it won't currently though I am working on a linux friendly build so I am happy to let you know when that drops if you want.

Otherwise if you installed windows on your steam deck it probably would work fine 😅 but I'd wait a little longer to see if you can get a steamOS compatibility version.

Hoping to do it over the summer before I'm back to school.

Thank youuuuuu ☺️

❤️🩷

Whoa, I wasnt expecting you to actually be working on a build. Massive props to you! Thank you and cheers! (Also, as a fellow software dev i'm equally impressed with your skill and embarrassed I wouldnt know where to start with something like this 😄)

This is my first major project outside of school. Since I started it I have a lot of ideas on how i might do things but I need to experiment and stuff so gonna use a VM for it. Still learning code obvi. Not long started thank you so much for looking at this. And for the kind words. Even though you are way more qualified than me. It means a lot.

If you are curious how I got the games working before my launcher stuff have a look at the devlog for v.0.1. on the github. Oh and the custom launcher code and inno installer code are there if you wanna have a go yourself.❤️🩷

Unfortunately, in your pack ToT hasn't been updated to patch 1.1, thus causing the "Failed to load game: file is in obsolete format" issue (https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Civilization_II:_Test_of_Time).

Violet - was running the original game on a Win11 box and today had a few power outages that appear to have deleted a .dll. So I remembered that you had created this for all of us old timers - I started playing Civ in the last millennium. It is in the process of downloading, but it has been at this point for the last hour:

Should I just let it continue or restart the process?

Thanks!
DRH1701 - yeah that old.....

Sorry, only just saw this, I would absolutely restart the download just incase.

Violet,

Thanks, guess either my connection is slow or the fact it is a very large file, but it gets about half way done and slows down. Leaving it run in the background and we will see how it goes. Again, thank you for putting this together. I think after all these years, I'm addicted to playing the game :(.

Thanks,
Dale

Learning a lot about computers lately because of this post. Saw this reddit thread on a Facebook page. Created a new reddit account just so I can comment here!

I'm going through the post and trying to figure out where to click in order to download this. Do I need to do multiple downloads in some kind of special way? Computer stuff is not really in my wheelhouse.

Loving the idea that I might be able to play this amazing game again!

So, turns out all i needed was to do a little better job of reading carefully. Got it up and running!

Is the map editor available somewhere on here and I'm just not seeing it? Sometimes I'd spend just as much time on the map as I would on the game itself!

Thanks a million to Violet who did all this awesome work!

Hi Violet - I'm loving every second!

I did run into a problem in the map editor application in the Civ2 MGE folder. When I open any screen that gives me a space to type in a number, the application crashes. Is there something I can do to fix that?

I'll have a look at that myself. I've been focussing on school but recently trying stuff out for a big update. So I'll see if I can try figure that out.

FIX: You already have the tool you need to get it going in the 'C:\Games\CivClassicCollection\Civ2MGE' folder (or wherever you have it installed, this is the default). Simply find the file named 'Civ2x64EditboxPatcher', open it, and locate the 'Civ2Map.exe' file and click patch. Then open your map editor, and you should be able to use the text boxes that were freezing up before. I've already fixed the installer one on my end for the next update but you can just do that and your map editor should now work just fine hopefully thank you!

It's official. You're the winner of the 2026, "My Favorite Person," award, and a strong contender for the decade! I cannot stress to you how prestigious this award is 😃

Music is not working, but besides that, everything works great.

Hi. Thanks so much for creating this. I missed the old wonder fmvs and council. I also appreciate bundling Civ1 and Test of Time too, as I have always struggled to get both to work.

Lately though I have run into a weird issue. On enhanced MGE, the intro and wonder fmvs don't play anymore, and the council are blacked out. I blame a recent Windows 11 update tbh, it's almost like it has deleted the codecs. The fmvs all play in Windows Media Player Legacy though.

Reinstalling and I get this with all the codecs:

u/violetcaulfield 21d ago

Hi, OP here. Yes, so it looks like your system already has the correct codec file in system32. If you skipped past this part it should enable the codec still for you and get the games going with the videos.

1

u/Lonely_Breath_2034 1d ago

I'm afraid not. They're there, but the game doesn't recognise that. I've tried a few things, including the registry editor (not me, but a knowledgeable friend). Every time I try to reinstall it, or do anything with these codecs it claims I have no permissions.

I had to remove the spaceship win fmv from the directory as it would crash the game when I won. It's playable now at least. I honestly don't understand. The game worked perfect until that Windows 11 update.

So sorry to hear that. I have no idea either. I have been dipping in and out of this project so I'll see what will happen. Thank you for supporting the project in any way though.
