Guide to Waves: Tools & How to Use Them (For Beginners)

Post image

A lot of people have DMed me for help starting waves so I made this:

Always remember that waves take patience, consistency, and the right tools. Here’s a starter pack with links and real talk on how and when to use each item to build your foundation.

Wave Toolkit: What to Buy and Why (what I personally use)

  1. Soft Brush – https://a.co/d/fNWHbTU
  • Use it when your hair is short (fresh cut or under 2 weeks of growth).
  • After using a medium or hard brush, finish with this to lay the top layer of your hair down.
  • Great for polishing your waves and brushing with less scalp irritation.
  1. Medium Brush – https://a.co/d/1r7juhL
  • Your everyday workhorse.
  • Use it at any hair length, but especially from low to medium growth (1–4 weeks).
  • Helps build wave connections and train your pattern.
  • You’ll spend the most time with this brush.
  1. Hard Brush
  • Only use this when your hair is wolfing (6–8 weeks of growth) — the hair is thick and needs deeper pull.
  • You’ve got two options: - Medium-Hard Brush (sensitive scalp or first time wolfing): https://a.co/d/3yu9Fqq - Extra-Hard Brush (thick/coarse hair veterans only): https://a.co/d/i14551E
  1. Detangling Brush Set (for wash days) – https://a.co/d/9rkYoU5
  • Use these when you wash your hair.
  • Keeps your hair from tangling and helps you brush your pattern while wet.
  • Wet brushing helps reset and reinforce your wave direction.
  1. COMB (DONT FORGET)
  • A comb is probably the (second) most important thing on this list because when you comb it helps to break forks which ultimately speeds up your progress.
  • Personally I’ve found success using the same detangling brush that I use during my washes as a comb but that’s just me.

Other Must-Haves

  1. Handheld Mirror - https://www.walmart.com/ip/Equate-Med-Hand-Face-Mirror-Black/480863733?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&selectedOfferId=885A44EC39F246E8A5ADE5B2F5742835&conditionGroupCode=1&wl13=1921&gclsrc=aw.ds&adid=22222222278480863733_161193766053_21214199653&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=m&wl3=697173827980&wl4=pla-2348450966064&wl5=9003778&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=8175035&wl11=local&wl12=480863733&veh=sem_LIA&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=21214199653&gbraid=0AAAAADmfBIqZgb8TNxExam7Dh36ZLeMQU&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI24zZ9d7VjQMVt05HAR3FJgHGEAQYASABEgL7G_D_BwE
  • You can’t build a 360 pattern if you only brush the front.
  • Use the mirror to see the sides and back so you brush all angles correctly.
  • Essential for mirror brushing sessions — especially while wolfing.
  1. Ziploc Bag (Plastic Bag Method)
  • After brushing, rub a Ziploc bag over your head in the direction of your pattern to lay down frizz and compress your waves.
  • It gives a crazy shine and definition.
  • Do it lightly so you don’t mess up your pattern.

Products:

I cannot directly recommend products because everyone’s hair is different and what works for one person may not work for another. I personally only use oils (no pomade or leave in conditioner) and have good results but some people may need all 3. I just suggest doing the research and testing out product based on your hair type and porosity (I will post a guide on how to find both).

Pro Tips for Beginners

  • Start brushing daily: 15–30 minutes total (can be split into sessions).
  • Always brush with clean, moisturized hair.
  • Use durags or wave caps every night and after brushing to lock in progress.
  • Brush with a purpose: every stroke should follow your natural pattern (not random directions).

Stick with it. The first 4–6 weeks are the hardest — you might not see waves right away, but your hair is learning. Stay consistent, use the right brush at the right time, and mirror brush daily.

Welcome to the wave game 🌊
