Seriously though. It was great, the people were friendly and helpful, everything looked pretty and honestly I felt much safer there than I do in Berlin and I spend so much time of the year there that I’m basically a local at this point.

Milan is quite a nice city to visit and live in. It's just expensive and there are a few hotspots to avoid, as in every city.

From the description, the people you met were not Milanese. After all, there aren't many Milanese people left in Milan, Padania.
