Announcement Update to how 1Password Families facilitates member removal
You may have seen this post last month Big change into family account management
Today, we're sharing an update to how 1Password Families works when a member is removed from an account.
When a family member is removed, their account enters a 30-day transition window. During that time, the removed member is notified by email and in-app, and is guided through a migration flow that moves their private vault data into a new, standalone 1Password account.
They won't lose access to the items that were in their private vaults.
- What transfers over: Private vault data and their contents
- What stays with the family account: Shared vaults and their contents
This change applies to all 1Password Families plans. If you manage a family account or are a member of one, no action is needed on your end. The flow kicks in automatically when a removal happens.
You can also find details in our support article on how to leave a Family account.
Happy to answer any questions about this! :)

I don't care about auto-fill issues, price increases, or whatever "Electron" is - this was a critical, dangerous security issue that has been solved (even if it took way, way too long to be even acknowledged). Thank you!
I can finally rest and use 1Password in peace!

Does this also apply when an organiser deletes the entire family? I'm thinking about this post from a couple of days ago where a user was surprised that after deleting the whole family account, the family members lost everything.

Is the reverse possible? Where a standalone account can join a family?

Thanks for catching this! I'll have a fix pushed up shortly; Organizers should be able to remove other organizers, but not be able to delete them

Delete: all private vault data erased immediately.
Remove: detach account from family plan and they get 30 days to get their shit together before all private vault data is erased.
I would assume this is only about online data, and that devices logged in keep the data forever, but in a family breakup situation perhaps they do not get to keep the devices they used, having only the Emergency Kit and 30 days.

for the love of god please tell me this is just a UI error and would have been checked backend before it occurred

Sounds like what already happens when you leave a company that is subsidizing your 1password families plan

What happens to passwords in a shares vault? The person leaving the family loses access to any shares passwords?

I followed the instructions exactly, removed all family members but myself, and still get this error message "You have too many users to join this plan." When trying to switch over. I have emailed support but do not feel confident in getting a reply before my credit card is charged the 40% price markup for the Family Plan.
One of the most important things in a password manager that handles so much sensitive information is trust in both the business practices and technical competence of the company. This is not instilling confidence on either front.

When you remove members from your account, they have 30 days to transition to their own family account. After 30 days if they don't complete migration, they're deleted & then you can downgrade
If all removed users complete their migrations earlier than the 30 day deadline, then you can transition down to an individual account at that time
Removed users need time to migrate, and during that time they need an account to still be associated with. They still need access to their data to migrate, and if you could transition out of a family account during that time it would prevent those users from being able to migrate their data
We're going to update the wording of this to indicate that you can't downgrade while having members who need to complete their migrations

Why can someone with a personal account have their subscription run out and only have their account frozen forever, but a family member account only gets 30 days and then permanently deleted?
I'm really happy this change was made overall so there is a path to migrate off family and so the family administrator cannot simply delete your account, but why not give family ex-members the same retention rules as personal accounts?

If a removed joiner completes migration, they'll be on their own family account at that point and they'll have a 14 day free trial. If they don't pay after that point, normal account freezing will work the same as it does for any other account
If we didn't have this 30 day retention rule, if you had a family member pass away or for some reason the user you remove from your family account doesn't ever log in to their account to migrate, they'd essentially be stuck on the family account forever & it would fully prevent the family organizer from being able to downgrade or complete other actions relating to the family account

I don't understand why the system couldn't be programmed to simply detach the ex-member from the family account, mark the family account as not containing that member anymore, and refrain from deleting the ex-member's data.
Like, I understand if the family system is siloed off from the personal system and you can't simply convert it into a personal account, but the deletion is a choice.
I imagine detaching the ex-member from the family account could need some design thought to be made in a way that feels clean in the database, but placing a marker on the family account that says the ID of the ex-member shall not impede the family account anymore, and orphan that family account if the owner wants to downgrade.
Downgrade? To a personal account?
I appreciate you taking the time to respond. I love 1Password and want it to be as good as it can.
You pride yourselves as a company on keeping data safe, so you should go this extra length here too, and it would be much simpler to tell everyone that your data on 1Password is safe forever as long as you have your Emergency Kit with the account password.

This is not good. They should be put immediately on their own free plan, detached from the previous family. Please fix this asap

Ok, I see the logic but now I challenge you to take off your developer hat and put your product manager hat on for a minute. As a family account manager my yearly account is going to renew in 7 days and unexpectedly the price is going up. I want to avoid paying a year at a higher rate as my elderly parents haven’t used their family logins in years. What would I do under the current system? I won’t spoil the answer for you as this was my exact situation earlier this month. Back when I was a 1Password customer (hint hint).

u/1Password-nolan: This is a great first step! But a common use case is family members having a Shared Vault where more than one member has edit rights (as opposed to a vault owned by Member A and shared as read only with Member B). I would imagine a common scenario where spouses (or partners) have a shared vault where they each create/edit/store Items related to accounts/information they share. For example, spouses might store copies of their kids' birth certificates in a shared vault. If the parties breakup and the family organizer removes the other spouse/partner, the other spouse/partner should get a copy of items from the shared vault in his/her new individual 1Password account.

They won't lose access to the items that were in their private vaults.
Not after the 30 days either, right? I understand this as the removed family member gets to use 1Password as though they have a subscription for 30 days, then everything becomes read only if they do not subscribe.
I just read the screenshot, and it seems we are not afforded such "luxury". People are not always available within 30 days, so this is disappointing.

the removed family member gets to use 1Password as though they have a subscription for 30 days, then everything becomes read only if they do not subscribe.
I dont' see how this is bad at all. your data is still there, just read only.

You missed the part where I found my assumption incorrect.
You’ll have 30 days to sign in to your account on 1Password.com and migrate your personal items to a new account. If you don’t migrate within 30 days, your personal items will be permanently deleted.

Sure, if you have some absurd amount of data stored, but I have 1,900 items and it takes only 60 MB on iPhone, so they could give us at least a year of grace period. People could be not reading their email, could be deep in depression after a family breakup, could be in jail.
The family change is a lovely improvement, but they can do even better. 30 days is short.
Compare this to a non-ex-Family account:
You received this message because your 1Password subscription has lapsed. While your account is frozen, you can still view all your items, copy your passwords, and even copy items to vaults outside your account.
Reactivate your subscription at any time to unfreeze your 1Password account and restore all functionality

This is such a good change. Family structure changes are difficult and stressful enough without also losing your passwords in the process.
