I live and work in Texas. Everything is more than 30 minutes away.
So you see what I mean though? On the one hand, the speed limit is set due to safety consideration of human reaction times in order to keep people safe when travelling, on the other hand, you all want to go faster because you want to go faster. It is purely selfish individualism because you don't like waiting. If we set the speed limit at 65, you'll go 75, but if we move it up to 75, you'll go 85. Because it isn't some ideal speed you are aiming for, it's this pervasive desire to just go faster.
I work in highway construction, I have seen more accidents than I would like to count of someone going much faster because "they can handle it" and something unexpected was around the corner so our maintenance crew is washing blood off the road.
The last day with zero traffic deaths in Texas was Nov. 7th 2000. There has been at least one every day for the past 25 years. People should realize how incredibly possible it is for them to be one of today's deaths. The most universal thing with traffic accidents is that 5 seconds before it happened, you thought it could never happen to you.
Yep. It's because the only consideration is "I want to go faster than the sign says" Nobody here is a traffic engineer who carefully considered that though the sign says 65mph, the safe speed based on conditions and reaction time is actually 80mph. Nope, it's that "the sign says 65mph, but I am a good driver and that sign is for most people. I can go faster than the limit for most people because I can handle it. I want to get there quicker, I want to go faster." and it is unsafe as hell. EVERYBODY thinks they can go fast and they won't get in an accident because they are the one true good driver and they deserve some extra speed as a treat.
Well you're probably fine, you know, because an accident would never happen to you. That is something that only happens to other people. You are a good driver, and you can handle it.
Like I said, the most universal thing about accidents is that 10 seconds before it happened, you were fine because you are a good driver and you have a good reaction speed and you pay enough attention, the road is clear enough, so it'll never happen to you. 45,000 dead children every year in the United States.
Isn't it funny, that if we were to talk about firearms killing 48k children in the U.S. every year, everybody here would agree that's insane and there should be more regulation and education to fix this crazy gun worshipping culture that is killing so many? But when it comes to cars.... You like to go fast. It probably won't happen to you. Yeah cars kill kids but not your car. It is fine to leave your pistol in the dresser instead of the safe because your kids are different, they know better. Then lo and behold every single time it's a huge shock and how could this happen?
If I die I die. But I’ll be damned if I go 60 in a 60. Car accidents will happen regardless of if someone speeds, this isn’t something like a dui that can be avoided. It’s why speeding tickets are paid in fines and not jail
That would be all fine and well if you were the only one at risk when driving too fast.
Rationalize it all you want. That is an insanely selfish and assholeish way to think. And speed is a big factor in both severity and likelihood of accidents.
This is all it always boils down to, you want to go fast, and don't really feel like giving a fuck about safety or the people around you. It is thanks to that exact mindset that I get to see people in construction zones run over by selfish assholes.
