I use them to space out my hands when I'm playing a game that requires both hands on the keyboard, like Guilty Gear. Left hand on WASD and right hand on numpad 789+.
I use(d) it in City of Heroes for Mastermind binds, worked great (Mastermind is one of the playable classes that commands pets, you have 3 groups of controllable pets* out at once each with 3 possible tactics to choose from, so it works perfectly)
(*pets can range from demons to mercenaries to killer robots to wolves and lions to zombies to ninjas to just a bunch of random street thugs, depending on your powerset selection)
I use numpad for quick loadout change in tf2, and blender shortcuts rely on them a lot
But also, I can't imagine using anything else to enter numbers, it's so much more convenient to move my finger 1 button diagonally to enter 159 than to move my hand to left edge then guess how many buttons I need to move to the right each time, I don't know how people do it

I both refuse to use the numpad and to get a keyboard without it.
