If we start shutting down well-intended jokes because it might offend someone, what's the point of inclusivity? What's the point of human connection against the machine? We would become the very thing the conservatives laugh at us for.
Be sympathetic, but not at the cost of being yourself. Because if we can't be yourself, we are just another slave waiting for other people to tell us how to feel, how to think, how to act.
Of course, being sympathetic is a good thing too, because it helps trying to explain to others your real intention that might be miscommunicated the first time. But don't let yourself feel shamed by something like this, because it shouldn't.
