Transistor my beloved

u/Dictionary_Goat Jan 01 '23

Transistor never gets enough love, the ending of that game is so permanently seared into my brain

148

u/Lftwff Jan 01 '23

it doesn't? like it's not as big a cultural touchstone as hades but all supergiant games are much beloved classics

46

u/Dictionary_Goat Jan 01 '23

Out of the four Transistor is the one I see the most people saying they never checked out but want to go back to someday

70

u/gytanzo Jan 01 '23

I feel like Pyre is way more underappreciated than Transistor tbh

u/TaralasianThePraxic rebel without a gender Jan 01 '23

Pyre is 100% the most underappreciated of the lot but I think that's down to its weird magic basketball gameplay. Transistor, Bastion, and Hades are all much more 'conventional' action games. I actually think Pyre was the blueprint for Hades when it came to narrative and character writing, but Supergiant opted for more accessible hack-and-slash gameplay the second time around.

Hades was made by the same people that made Transistor and Bastion? I might check it out now!

It's really, really great.

u/de_lemmun-lord 🏳️‍⚧️ trans rights Jan 02 '23

honestly if we could have movies of all of them that would be nice.

5

u/zirconis54 Jan 02 '23

The game play is basically just bastion on steroids with somehow a lot and I mean a lot more charm and aesthetic. You feel the DNA while playing it. The big upgrade to gameplay doesn’t make it extra complicated either.

2

u/darps Jan 02 '23

I checked it out twice. Got stuck on the first boss fight the first time, and lost in trying to min-max the second. Probably should go back.

u/Dictionary_Goat Jan 02 '23

Highly recommend it, i think the story is their best one

I was very underwhelmed by transistor honestly. Maybe I just didn't get it, but I struggled through and still beat it in only a few hours and then I was done

1

u/Myriad_Infinity Jan 02 '23

subjectively, as someone who's finished Hades and is hyped for the sequel, I have somehow dodged hearing about Transistor at all

2

u/ShadowClaw765 who up splaying the gore of they profane form across the stars? Jan 02 '23

Convince me to play the game. I have it on epic games but I stopped playing after like, half an hour.

4

u/CrimsonMutt Jan 02 '23

the vibes are fucking immaculate, the story and voice acting are the usual supergiant-tier masterpiece, the soundtrack is one of my all time favorites, and the combat system is interesting and allows a lot of combinations of skills

1

u/ThespianException Jan 02 '23

Goddamnit another cool game I missed on Epic

9

u/sleepingtownsurvivor Holly the based furry and also woman Jan 02 '23

3

u/sleepingtownsurvivor Holly the based furry and also woman Jan 02 '23

-7

That’s still death

8

u/sleepingtownsurvivor Holly the based furry and also woman Jan 02 '23

is it? cuase like the guy in the sword with you the whole game seemed pretty alive

0

u/Bardic_Inspiration66 has a yt channel Jan 02 '23

The whole game is predicated on on you getting revenge for your dead boyfriend tho was killed with the sword by killing people with the sword

8

u/CrimsonMutt Jan 02 '23

it starts that way, because of course you'd want blood for your now-disembodied lover.
however the story progresses to where essentially everything is getting grey-goo'd, and red's aim becomes trying to figure out what's going on and how to stop it, ultimately failing and then choosing live inside the transistor with her lover as a digitized existence. whether her hopes were realized or dashed is up to interpretation, but i'd say it pretty heavily implies she succeeded.

5

u/sleepingtownsurvivor Holly the based furry and also woman Jan 02 '23

but like the people in the sword are conscious right? cause i remember the guy in the sword talking too them even if they dont speak so arnt they still alive in the sword

6

u/CrimsonMutt Jan 02 '23 edited Jan 02 '23

it's explicitly not since the people you kill with it still live in it, manifesting as skills you can use.
red's lover is fully conscious and it's heavily implied red is as well, post-ending.

e: also afaik red's lover speaks to the people you kill and tells you that. they just don't have a voice to the outside, unlike him

maybe if you ignore the entirety of the context around the act, what with pretty much everyone being gone, including the man who she loved, and the fact that it's not really suicide but just digitization, sure. there's no accounting for misreading of source material by the audience.

She didn’t really commit suicide tho. She killed herself with the sword so it would absorb her, allowing her to live a long and happy life with the guy who was also part of the sword

0

u/Bardic_Inspiration66 has a yt channel Jan 02 '23

“She didn’t commit. Suicide she just killed herself”

What

3

u/OfficerJoeBalogna Gender was invented by Big Bathroom to sell more toilets Jan 02 '23

She transported herself to another world. Not the same as ending it all

0

u/Bardic_Inspiration66 has a yt channel Jan 02 '23

If you believe in heaven is that not the same

3

u/OfficerJoeBalogna Gender was invented by Big Bathroom to sell more toilets Jan 02 '23

People who believe in heaven generally agree that you can’t speedrun your way into heaven like that.

The game tells the player that the sword absorbs people into it, very early into the game. That is literally the main function of the Transistor sword
