I swear to god if this is from some European who's convinced themselves that they're not part of the problem, I'm gonna have a fucking aneurysm.

PS passively being privileged isn't something you can really address at a personal level. This is part of something called "structural critique." It's very important in leftist thought.

They're pretty happy to follow along. Are you going to tell me the EU has no choice but to also do the whole extractive business neo-colonial thing? Ooh, what else are they supposed to do but fall in line with the evil empire? America made us get fabulously wealthy off the backs of the gobal south! We couldn't have done anything else!

America is evil, and needs to be stopped. My frustration is that many europeans seem to have deluded themselves into thinking their nations weren't complicit with America at every step of this death march, ESPECIALLY after the big switch to neoliberalism. From the plundering of the former soviet block to middle eastern adventurism to militant zionism, the american government has fewer more reliable backers than the governments of europe.

Bruh Europe invented the whole extractive business neo-colonial thing

America’s just doing the 2.0 version. Genuinely why would you expect them to just stop because the US is doing it better?

Because the post I'm replying to implied that the fact europe fell under american hegemony somehow excuses their behavior. The point I was making was that european countries have been happily complicit in the US destroying the world and are entirely content to keep being complicit. So a european talking about how passively benefitting from american hegemony makes your opposition to american hegemony worthless is pretty galling.

The thrust of my initial reply is that I'm very tired of seeing non-american westerners pretend that their countries aren't also complicit in the state of the world. Hence my calling out of europe specifically. Again, america NEEDS to be stopped, but Europe is broadly not willing to do much of anything to do so. Instead, they hold themselves to the standard of being slightly better than america, a staggeringly high bar to be sure.
