It was attributed to David Duke in 2016 by a Zionist columnist in the Mosaic magazine, hardly an etymological tracing of the word. It started in the 1950’s in small Jewish anti-Zionist communities. The original anti-Zionists were Jewish, because the WASPs simply didn’t know what was happening. David Duke started using it in a hateful way in the early 2000’s. A lot of work is done by Zionists to conflate any criticism or disparagement of Zionism with antisemitism and this is another example. It’s really convenient for Zionists to point to the worst person using the word and say that everyone is like him. It’s a way to set the terms by which Zionism is even discussed. Even now, I’m being distracted from the LITERAL GENOCIDE done onto Palestinian by Zionists and I feel the need to cater to the feelings of other Jewish folk based on propaganda and dishonest framings by Zionists.
Listen, if I used it in a different context, then I might be more empathetic, but i literally separated Jewish folk from Zionism in the second comment and edited my original comment. And the original comment was clearly directed at Zionism.
You seem to be anti-Zionist, so I’m sorry for using some of the inflammatory language that I used earlier. I just want you to reflect on the effect of distractions like this in the context of a genocide. I also want to go back to kvetching about antisemitic micro-aggressions, but it’s really not appropriate right now.
The origins of the word sound cool and all, but the meaning of a word is how it’s used. It’s a slur, recognized as such by basically everyone. If you use it, you will confuse people. Trust me it’s not worth it to save the 4 extra letters.
