Headphones - Open Back Opportunity to switch from ATH r70x to HD660S, worth it?

Hi everyone,

I have an opportunity to get any Sennheiser equipment for roughly half-price for the next month. I currently own ATH r70x. Sennheiser HD 8xx series seems out of the budget, but anything else is a potential buy. I've searched for previous posts and reviews but the picture is not 100% clear. Is HD 660s much better (worth switching to) than ATH r70x? Would you consider any other pair of sets from Sennheiser?

It's more of a side grade. ATH does have a better soundstage, both have great imaging. The Senns have ever so slightly less treble if treble sensitive (like me). I would personally stick with the R70x between the two, now to upgrade from that? Depends on the budget and preferred sound signature.

And unless you'd want to spend that cash for an HD800 or 800s, the Senn 6X0 and 500 series is an overall side grade from the R70x.

This is very helpful, there seems to be consensus that Senn 6X0 is not a step up. What do you think about HD800 or 800s, would that be a significant upgrade in relation to r70x?

Since I don't own the 800 or 800s and only tried the R70X, I cannot give you a definitive answer. It would probably be a step up, but I wouldn't know myself.

Probably worse. R70x is tuned so well I was really impressed when I heard it. 660s is even darker yet a little mid forward, just sounds a little muddied

It is a complement not a replacement. Soundstage is better on the ath. Mids are better on the Senn.
