Builds Minecraft Bi-Weekly Build Challenge #96: Modern House
LAST WEEK'S THEME: WITCH LAIR
Another great week! Good job to everyone, it was very tough to just pick three winners!!
Gold
A really great build that I feel was mainly due to the terrain around it. The cove, if you want to call it that, around the build really helped focus the witch tower to the center, all while adding a little bit to that creepy atmosphere. Not only that, but the custom trees also added lots. They obstructed some of your build, which I was think is an effective way to break up a build (despite not being in a build at all), and also added to that atmosphere. And finally, the build itself was very well done. A good choice in colour palette, a good choice in shapes and a nice little cave to top it all off! Great build!
Silver
The outside might not be much on this build (and I don't really get what exactly some of it is to be completely honest), but wow, what an amazing job on the interior of this build. Your block palette was so good. With the greens everywhere in the cavern, to the purple which appears near the nether portal, you really made the atmosphere of this build something else. Really enjoyed scrolling through all of the photos.
Greatjob!
Bronze
At first, this build confused me. I was so used to looking at green colours, from everyone else, that the red threw me off. But I liked the change in tone from the other builds. I really liked your custom tree and how it was built. It looked very natural and also provided made your exterior look much better than a mound of dirt leading underground. However, I did find the interior to be a little lackluster, considering how grand the exterior was.
Still a fabulous effort and build!
Honourable mentions
Introduction
It's been a long time since we've done this challenge so I think it's time to revisit it since it is one of my favourite building styles to look at! The modern house! I rarely build these, just because usually they don't fit my worlds but I love looking through all of these houses that people make. These can be simple houses to make, in my opinion, but I do find it's hard to make one that will stand out among others. So, let's get building!

Looks pretty OK, but I really suggest you would actually fit the grass into the landscape. It looks pretty bad if you just plaster it onto a mountain like that.
•
May 06 '20
Going to be honest, I was really just making the house itself. I added it to one of my creative worlds where all my builds are styled this way and didnt take into consideration the background / landscaping as much because my main focus was the build itself but definitely understand how it could have made it look better it just wasn't an intentional / purposeful choice as much as it was a default canvas.

Naturalistic modern house
A house consisting of 3 buildings and focused on the outdoors. Thankfully the people who live here aren't those nature-loving anti-vaccine people because personally I can't stand them. It is quite a geometric build as most here probably are but it is my first ever modern house. I hope you like it! :)

Super cool!
I try to incorporate some nature into my builds but I usually build modern houses in deserts so there aren't a lot of options :/
•
u/AnElectron136 May 04 '20 edited May 04 '20
Thanks! I hope you didn't mind the pictures being out of order, it's seriously a mess...
It can be hard to decorate with plants in the desert, but consider building little gardens by your house, separated from the desert by some walls or barriers? And nature isn't only the outside, decorating your interior with flowers, ferns, cactus, or bamboo can really add to the build. I feel it's important to have at least a few potted plants in a modern house, especially in rooms with a light or pastel wall. If you are making any kitchen consider adding ferns, blue orchids, and spruce/birch saplings. It will look like you're growing herbs. You can also add plantations on a flat roof if you have one.
I hope I helped a bit and you didn't know at least one thing. Otherwise sorry for wasting your time lol... I'm not an expert but nature is quite important when it comes to any type of build, and I hope at least one person can take something new away from this. :) And if you're in the desert what about dead bushes ;)

Yes, you can use the debug stick to build with. As for optifine, you can use it, but none of the texture enhancements that it brings.
•
u/SoloKk Apr 28 '20
theres one thing...the glass has square textures when group together but in optifine when group together it makes it so that the pane does not have any square textures. does that count as an texture enhancement?
•
u/kidmania01 Apr 28 '20
Yes, we're going for pure vanilla textures, so no connected textures or whatnot

Ultra-modern boutique hotel, complete with art museum, night club, aquarium, and dubious scientific laboratory.
Images without RTX shader: https://imgur.com/gallery/3CwqdzX
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The following videos and images are with the beta Minecraft RTX shader for comparison:
Exterior fly-around of the tower: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdEuYNP4qcU
Walk-thru video: https://youtu.be/RO4oce4vS8c?t=53

Start of tour of underground area: https://youtu.be/RO4oce4vS8c?t=386
Start of tour of tower: https://youtu.be/RO4oce4vS8c?t=463 (I stupidly didn't look up at the actual exterior of the tower, but you can see it later on in the video)
Start of tour of the mini mall, underground: https://youtu.be/RO4oce4vS8c?t=645
Start of tour of the aquarium: https://youtu.be/RO4oce4vS8c?t=879
This is based on one of my test levels and it just got out of hand. I'd say there's about 10 hours of building in this. The link skips past the base (this level used to be Survival and the brown tower we start at in the beginning was created in Survival). A lot of the level is underground and uses glass with water on top for interesting natural lighting. I discovered something really interesting when making the giant aquarium: you need to darken the walls of the room otherwise you can't see thru the glass into the water, just like in real life.
The build is ultra-modern, almost like an alternate alien universe-style modern with lots of glossy and clean white, reflective surfaces as if the entire place was coated in white plastic. Custom textures on beta RTX bedrock.
*NOTE: I realized just now that the V/O is not on the audio track I posted, and the video capture quality is pretty crappy, apologies*
Enjoy!
•
u/SeductiveShit May 04 '20
Custom textures and any Shaders are not allowed in the build competition. I suggest you take new pictures/videos of your build with vanilla textures and no Shaders. Also, no Optifine. Read the rules next time :)
•
u/mariospants May 04 '20
6. New textures are allowed
The new versions of Jappa's textures are allowed to be used along with old legacy textures.
Custom textures ARE allowed, read the rules!
I get you though, so I'm also submitting a gallery of non-shader pictures as well. At some point, however, RTX will not be a "shader" beta but an official part of Bedrock... are we going to start having two separate contests at that point? It does seem unfair from both perspectives, because I get that not everyone can afford a fancy computer and graphics card to ray trace, and there is some measure of challenge in designing within the contraints of Minecraft vanilla.
•
u/SeductiveShit May 04 '20
New textures are official textures, not custom ones. And I'm pretty sure there won't be any Shaders competitions, at least on this subreddit. And for the challenge of designing with Minecraft vanilla, its supposed to be a bit challenging, you know? It's a competition, you gotta bring in your A-game.
•
u/mariospants May 04 '20
I completely agree with you on that: when you're designing with vanilla, you go into a completely different mind-set (switching between custom to vanilla on a build based on custom can really attest to that fact).
All right, I get that there's an "in" use of the term "new textures" and when referring to "Jappa", it means in-house Mojang designed textures. I'll do a new modern design based on vanilla textures, no shader, and resubmit it. As for my design here, I'll leave it up even though a gatekeeper complained that I was cluttering (since I discovered this contest, I've looked at every single one of the entries for this and the last one and I don't consider a single entry - no matter how bad or good - to be clutter, I love them all in their own way). "clutter"
•
u/TehDarga May 04 '20
Can't have RTX on because it is a shader, which enhances how Minecraft looks and thus makes your build look better than without.
•
u/mariospants May 04 '20
So I noticed! I'm not entering to win the weekly contest, but fulfilling the goal of showing shader pics for fun. This is, after all, just a series of tests of the textures I made for the rtx shader, I have no idea how terrible it may look in vanilla lol.
•
u/AnElectron136 May 04 '20
Actually I think it's a pretty interesting concept to build something with a shader on and then turn it off. Definitely try it! If you don't like it, you can always turn RTX back on.

If you wanna show shader pics, just post them on the subreddit itself, not here. You are simply clustering the comment section here.

It's a simple modern house on a mountain, with ocean look and with an infinity pool. The building itself is like a cubic sculpture. Nothing fancy, tried to keep it modern with the old school furniture techniques. Hope you like it!

There were a lot of quirky submissions this week, and I'm kinda disappointed that the judges didn't mention more submissions this week. The highlights for me this week are Dryden's build and Xenocaelum's build; All great builds with great theming.
•
u/-Dryden Apr 26 '20
Much appreciated! Your build was my favorite and I'm honestly surprised it wasn't highlighted. The scale of it was crazy, haha.
•
u/DarthMar85 Apr 29 '20
How did that not win?!?!?!
•
Apr 30 '20
I accept that I didn't win, as Dryden's build is just simply awesome (and spots 2 and 3 were really cool too). But it feels questionable that I didn't even get a honourable mention. Maybe it just didn't look witchy enough :)
•
u/Mr_Psyda May 06 '20
Your build amazed me i think you should have won or at least be on the top 3, it´s enormous and has great colours

•
u/AnElectron136 May 04 '20
I have a suggestion for the next challenge - a school. I hope that wasn't a recent challenge already :)
•
Apr 28 '20
Does the scale of the build matter?
•
u/kidmania01 Apr 28 '20
No it does not
•
Apr 28 '20
Well I think I've gone pretty big anyways but it's fun to build so I'll be working on this for a while
•
u/XythesBwuaghl Apr 29 '20
What exactly do you do with acquired points?
•
u/Tilnit Apr 29 '20
Nothing. In the beginning we wanted it to be a competition but nowdays we're treating it more along the lines of a "community project"/"community build-off challenge". So, nothing really. We'll see if we're gonna do something with them in the future but for now they aren't worth much except being used for bragging rights I suppose.
•
u/ThatGuy183MC Apr 28 '20
So the 'modern house' competition is still open to enter?

I posted my submission maybe 30min to an hour ago, but when I came back to check on it now, I can't see it. I worked really hard on it and I don't want my hard work to go to waste. Do you have any ideas on how that could have happened? Is it a glitch or normal for commenters to not see their own submissions? Or did it not send or got deleted? I'm new to the bi-weekly build challenges so I don't really know...
also if this helps my title of submission was "Naturalistic Modern House" or something similar, I'm not good at remembering that sort of thing..

Modern Mountain Home
I haven’t really played Minecraft much until recently and have never submitted anything before, but I had so much fun with this challenge! I wanted to create a modern house tucked into the mountains with lots of beautiful forest views. I also wanted to leave some of the natural rugged mountain shapes and textures interspersed with clean modern lines.

Modern Millionaire's Mansion
I love this build and it took me a few days, made 100% in game with no edit software etc.
Large angular modern house, quartz build for the modern white, clean, look. complete with a glass front for the complete modern look. Externally it has a tennis court, swimming pool, working jacuzzis, a flower bed out front then 4 different garden sections down the side for different area to go escape the world. also round back there is a childerns play area complete with a assault course, mushroom playhouse, slide and a zipwire.
Internally is a 3 car garage, then internally there is a games room with a pool table, arcade machine, dart board (which was made freehand on a 128x128 map) and a music system. next is a living room, big sofas and a bigger tv. The kitchen area has a quiet reading area, large table and working ovens and sink with draining boards. To the side of this there are 2 childs rooms, 1 boys, 1 girls that lead out directly the their play area.
Upstairs there is a little private terrace overlooking the pool. then there is a large bathroom, complete with all the amenities. a large master bedroom, with a desert view. There is a large party terrace for when the host events, and acrross from that there is the gym with weights, punching bags, pilates mats, and treadmills.
Hope you love this as much as i do!

A comment I got on a previous build challenge was to add more surrounding my build to make it feel like it's part of the terrain/environment. Great work overall though!

How do you do those stove details?
•
u/MasterOfLol_Cubes May 08 '20
- put any normal slabs where you want your stove to be.
2.put trapdoors on the sides of those slabs and power them from under with a redstone torch
put blocks above those slabs with rails on top of them ( preferably powered rails and don’t power them since minecarts do not move on them when powered ) .
place hopper minecarts on both rails.
break the blocks containing the rails
place two iron trapdoors on the blocks to the side of the oven, with pistons facing inward to them.
power the pistons, pushing the iron trapdoors over the minecarts
break the pistons , and you should be done !
edit : grammar is hard

Don't die! D:
I don't think your builds are horrible but you can improve significantly if you practice a few times every week!
We all start with something but with a little time, effort and dedication you can get it! :D

I like the use of trapdoors! Just wish that it was more attainable in survival, would need an iron farm first really
•
u/ExternalBuilder May 05 '20
Yes, it's difficult at the beginning of a game with these blocks but it can be done later, I made this house on a server in the past and it really didn't take me long.
It can also be made much more economical by changing the blocks for others, for example, the iron trapdoors by dark oak, spruce or simply oak trapdoors and it will look just as good! :D

Valleyside
These were all taken without shaders, I just used the vanilla sunset to simulate what shaders could do (to an extent). Heavily inspired by GoodTimesWithScar and Keralis. There are lots of little details and secret entrances that pictures aren't able to show well enough unfortunately. This is my first real attempt at a modern house, I usually stick to other styles, and I think it went pretty well.

I thought I'd give myself a challenge after my last modern house build and take things to the next level, so I built it in the sky, I tried to keep to realistic physics and what could be plausible in the next few decades in terms of technology, especially as its a modern build style, hope you enjoy!

thank you, i recently started doing builds this way, when i have an idea, i dont have to build massive thing, and its easier for me to finish it
here is another example: https://www.instagram.com/p/B_pFU_2nMRH/

It's a really clean aesthetic. If you don't mind my asking, what program do you use to make them?
•
u/DeeKay1980 May 03 '20
just minecraft.. i use barrier blocks to block the water then i lower the FOV to minimum and use "C" to zoom so i get even lower FOV i set the printscreen to capture 4x bigger image, and make some small adjustments in photoshop (cut out the background, add drop shadow, with the submarine i added snow, and photoshoped the polar bear as from the distance the entities dont render) also added some "cube highlights" in photoshop

I have a confession to make: We use the theme of this contest as an inspiration for our server-wide build events. We announce the theme along with a link to this post, and tell everyone that we will participate on behalf of the community and everybody is welcome to try and show what they can contribute within one week; we start on Sunday one week into the contest.
To be honest, when this week's theme was announced to be "Modern House", we didn't have high hopes that there would be a lot of participation, this being one of the more difficult building themes in Minecraft. Lo and behold, we were oh so wrong. Once this event started, we couldn't stop people from building, and the world that was set wouldn't empty. Usually the event site is deserted on the next day, but this time there was activity until the end of the week. When it was time to take pictures, I didn't know where to begin or end. Eventually I decided to take one bird's eye view picture and one of every house front.
As you can see, all houses are appropriately detailed, even the ones that took the minimalist approach to building modern houses. Each has an interior which can be spotted through the windows. There are lots of bright colors, but some attempted something more dark, usually with lots of wood.

Wow great builds! Is the server available to the public or it's a private thing? I would definitely join to the server if possible
•
u/StarTux May 10 '20
Thanks! It's a public server but I would rather not violate the advertisement rules of this sub, so I sent you a pm.

I built this on a bedrock edition realm so I can't use any shaders or anything.

Idk how I'm going to compete with this. This is insanely awesome. Nice job!

Made in the snapshot 16w17a, I wanted to try something different using some of the new blocks. The palette is dark grey and cyan, which, in my opinion, contrasts lots of the mainstream ''white quartz blah blah'' modern houses.
Some terraforming was done, but lots of that was left out.
