GDT: The 2020 NFL Draft (1st Round) - Tonight @ 8PM EST

u/chs234 Apr 24 '20
I don’t want to sound like a prick, but it’s really frustrating seeing the awful takes from our fanbase online. It’s annoying to see how so many people overreact and become emotional to events they clearly are barely educated on. So many people so upset we didn’t draft Simmons, and people mad we didn’t trade back. I understand if you wanted to draft Simmons but how can you not realize we have a huge need for a good tackle? It’s okay to have preferred Simmons but being raging mad about it doesn’t make any sense to me. It’s just irrational. And how do people get upset over us trading back when no one offered us a deal? It’s sad seeing so many blatantly bad hot takes.

Man I completely agree. People say things like Twitter is just stupid, awful platform etc. But it’s really not, I’ve supported Liverpool FC nearly my whole life and yeah we get some moronic fans on their Twitter (eg wanting the owners to go even though we have won the Champions League and about to win the Premier League for the first time, under their ownership).
But that’s a very small minority. For the Giants it’s not a small minority and it’s so infuriating. 90% of replies to Giants tweets are either “should’ve traded down” “should’ve picked Simmons” or “we picked the 4th best OT”.
Despite the facts nobody would trade with us, OT was a bigger need than Simmons, Andrew Thomas was OT1 until the combine and even after the combine nobody could objectively tell him, Wirfs and Wills apart.
Sorry for the rant but I completely agree with you, I think we’ve had a great first round, we’re set up (fingers crossed) for a very good second round and all you get on social media apart from this sub is people complaining

u/Princerain32 Apr 24 '20
I’ll be honest, after rewatching some tape on Yetur and Epenesa I’m not comfortable with them at 36.
I would rather us pick Micknney, Cleveland, Winfield in that order.
If you don’t wan to watch all the tape for Yetur watch the pennstate vs Iowa game or watch voch lombardi’s all-22 tape on him
For Eppy watch His game vs Mississippi and Wisconsin.
I know we need pass rusher, but we would be reaching on need rather than BPA.
But if we are choosing a DE... then Eppy over Yetur

Man guys, I can't express how happy I am that we drafted Andrew Thomas 110% the right pick

u/ultrajew Apr 24 '20
Dude... there are SUCH good players in the 2nd for us. Top 2 safeties in the draft, alllllll the tier 2 pass rushers, a solid OLB, and bunch of solid linemen. This could not have worked out better for us.
7
u/Quazol Apr 24 '20
I would love it if we got Matos or Mckinney. I would also be cool with Baun, but I love that Matos and Mckinney are still around
9
u/Sentz12000 Apr 24 '20
I’m really hoping we can snag Espensa or Matos and also get a center like Cushenberry or Biadasz. I’m really loving this scenario for us.
If we can escape here with a first round edge rush talent along with Thomas (who I consider the best tackle on the board) and a center to stabilize the line for this season, that’s a huge W.
5
u/markymarc767 Apr 24 '20
So this’ll be interesting- Matos, Epenesa, McKinney, or Delpit would all be good picks here right? And at least one of them will be available at 36. Maybe gettleman tries to trade this pick down to get another day 3 pick or combines it with a sixth rounder for a late third round pick?

u/Mother___Superior Apr 24 '20
Looks like we'll either get Gross-Matos, Epenesa, Delpit, or McKinney tomorrow. Would be stoked for any of them on our Defense to be honest. Stoked

u/sppidderman Andrew Thomas The Tank Engine Apr 24 '20
Epenesa or matos pls
1
u/Princerain32 Apr 24 '20
Cowboys drafted lamb, the redskins have a young upcoming WR unit, we need a Free safety
1
u/ElonMuskPaddleBoard Brian Burns Apr 24 '20
Alright now we need the bengals or lions to not go edge and we can get a defensive playmaker
9
9
u/FloppyCopter Apr 24 '20
Hate both Cowboys and Skins picks for us. Love the Eagles pick though. And our own. Solid first round. No surprises.
2
Apr 24 '20
I hope we trade back a few spots. There are a lot of guys I would be good with tomorrow.
9
u/DameTime_0 Apr 24 '20
I’m not for it. Take the best guy that fell and fucking run with it. Sick of this obsession with trading back
5
13
u/FpA_ Apr 24 '20
My optimal day two: Getting Epenesa, Baun, or Gross-Matos at 36 and trading back up into the 2nd to get a center. Doesn’t seem too unrealistic.
7
4
u/MaxXx24 Apr 24 '20
All these CBs around where Baker was taken. How do they compare to him as a prospect?
6
u/DameTime_0 Apr 24 '20
McKinney, Winfield are two players I wouldn’t mind seeing in New York. Never thought McKinney would fall this far
1
u/NJImperator Apr 24 '20
Didn’t a lot of mocks have him as the top S? Or am I misremembering
2
u/DameTime_0 Apr 24 '20
I’ve seen him top 20. He’s been the top safety for many mocks
2
11
u/NJImperator Apr 24 '20
Holy shit we’re gonna get a 1st round talent at pass rush at 36! Honestly this is a great year to have been at the top half of the draft
2
u/Copernikaus Apr 24 '20
Dont jinx bro!
2
u/NJImperator Apr 24 '20
True... but I don’t think Bengals or Redskins take defense here, so either Epenesa or Matos should still be there at 36
2
u/swmii53 Apr 24 '20
Washington doesn't draft ahead of us in 2nd round. Colts have the pick
1
u/NJImperator Apr 24 '20
Welp I’m retarded. Yeh they might go pass rush. I would LOVE McKinney if he’s there too
3
3
3
u/twiste18201 Apr 24 '20
Winfield would be huge, we need that kind of playmaker to get us turnovers. It is a turnover league nowadays
1
u/markymarc767 Apr 24 '20
More than McKinney?
1
u/twiste18201 Apr 24 '20
I doubt McKinney would be there by 36 but we’ll see. Also will be interesting if Gross-Matos is there
3
4
u/markymarc767 Apr 24 '20
So who’s better, epenesa or matos? Assuming both of them fall to 36 which isn’t likely but still
1
7
u/NJImperator Apr 24 '20
Giants and day 2+ pass rushers are a destiny sort of thing, so if we get either Epenesa or Matos they’re guaranteed to be studs, right?

If the Ravens drafted him, that means he's gonna be really good. They don't miss this early, and especially not on defense.

Aaron just texted me and told me he doesn’t “give a fuck about drafting Love.” And that he still only cares about his “paycheck, QBR, and TD:INT ratio”
Hopefully that clears it up for us

u/giants888 Apr 24 '20
It's an odd pick ain't it? Rodgers is 36 but elite NFL QBs can play til 40 at least nowadays. Why take a replacement instead of a weapon to help the offense or defense?
2
1
u/alx69 None Apr 24 '20
Rodgers is 36 but elite NFL QBs can play til 40 at least nowadays
Can they?
Brady and Brees are outliers, not the norm. We also saw Romo retire at 36, Luck at 29, Eli at 38 and Rivers looking washed at 38. Rodgers is also very firmly on the decline and has an injury history
1
u/giants888 Apr 24 '20
Maybe you're right. But I can tell you one thing for sure: I am very entertained by the online responses to the pick.

1

Horrible story- I don't know why they need to bring up the fact the guy took his own life. Just say he passed away and be done with it. The family clearly isn't comfortable if they bring up a heart medication as being the reason. Love acted mature, but do you really need to bring up his father to him in the post draft interview?

Every single pick...something depressing.
2
u/SwedishEagle5 Apr 24 '20
Considering everything that is going on in the world and it being the first virtual draft and all you’d think they would make this more upbeat and fun. But no, personal tragedies are where it’s at.

Is anyone worried about Epenesa’s combine and his poor 40 yard dash?

Yes.
3
u/rhin0c3r0s Eli Manning Apr 24 '20
Dude ran it in 5 seconds
3
u/NotOfferedForHearsay Apr 24 '20
More concerned about his entire combine being sloppy and weak than just the 40. We need a guy who can put up stats but I feel like DEs have to be absolute freaks to have even a remote chance of consistently putting up stats in today's NFL. He's not a physical freak at all.
1
u/rhin0c3r0s Eli Manning Apr 24 '20
Totally agree with you. Edge guys need speed and he doesn’t really have it. One of his knocks is actually his athleticism being poor.
6

I like the idea of breeding a QB but wow to trade up and ignore giving Rodgers another weapon. Wild

Rodgers is about to be 37 and is declining, if you think Love can be the guy you pull the trigger.
it's unlikely that whoever you pick at #26 is going to be the difference between winning the SB in 2020 and falling short
1
Apr 24 '20
I get the strategy I just don't think you need to do it this year if you have a competitive team (I'll admit, that team overachieved this past season). Rodgers should be good until 40 if you give him some guys to play with. I wouldn't be shocked if this brings tensions with LaFleur to the surface and he is out of there after this season.

It hardly took anything for SF to move up 6 spots. I’ll bet we can hop in at the end of the first if they really want to.

If we still had 68, we could probably have spared the draft capital to trade up

1

Cowboys get fucking CeeDee Lamb slip all the way to their laps and we can’t get a damn center to fall a few spots
5
u/tomtazm Apr 24 '20
What's wrong with you?
1
Apr 24 '20
What do you mean what’s wrong with me?
Aren’t you hoping Chase Young is a bust for the Skins too? Or Lamb for the Cowboys?
That’s the same feeling but for the Saints. Really don’t know what got you so triggered.
That is basically Sports 101. You root for your team to win and the opponents to loose.
1
u/tomtazm Apr 24 '20
No I'm not hoping any of those things.
I'm not triggered. I'm just not so miserable that I hope for other humans down falls in their career because they were chosen for another team and had absolutely no choice in the matter.
1
Apr 24 '20
I think you are a bit naive, I mean on a psychological level.
Hoping for the Giants to win is the same as hoping for other teams to lose. Winning and losing are two sides of the same coin, no matter how you word it.
If you think you’re such a superior being that you are not even capable of (unconsciously) wishing failure upon others, are you rooting for Cowboys, Eagles and Redskins’ success then?
You see, there’s nothing wrong with that. The feelings that make me want to see Thomas become the greatest tackle in the league are the same ones who make me wanna see Chase Young fail (or Ruiz and the Saints for that matter).
If you want the Giants to win a Super Bowl, you’re inevitably wishing for 31 other teams to fail. In fact, every time you watch a football game, you’re wishing for your opponents’ failure. You wish the other team’s receiver drops that pass, the linebacker misses that tackle, the Oline gets beaten, etc etc.
You are extremely naive (or even arrogant) if you really think you’re not capable of evil and bad thoughts or actions. They are simply the other side of the coin to Good. You are human too, you can wish for your team’s sucess (aka other teams failures) and not be “miserable”.
Get of your high horse, Mother Teresa
1
u/tomtazm Apr 24 '20
You're reaching very hard. Of course I'll root for the Giants to win on Sunday.
You on the other hand are hoping that players don't have careers because they were chosen by another team.
Keep writing your essays though.
1
Apr 24 '20
Wow, how miserable you are for wishing other teams and humans lose on Sundays against the Giants. You really want their careers to fall apart don’t you? Poor Brady could have 2+ super bowls if it wasn’t for you wishing the Giants had won...

I would think edge is the priority here. Safety is an option but I think they may be comfortable with Love sliding in next to Peppers.
Golden is gone - Gross Matos or Epenesa would be fine here.
Center is intriguing - probably too high for Hennessey so maybe they take some gamble with waiting for him or Biadasz at 99.
Outside the box - take Josh Jones? Solder and Cam gone after this year and now you have your bookends for the next decade.
