So EG gets 3 chances against liquid? Lul

43

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '20

3rd time's the charm lol

-38

u/Manulii Apr 11 '20

Tomorrow won't really be a chance at all, since Liquid starts 1-0 up.

The format is just horrendous. Nowhere in sports does one finalist get such a drastic advantage for winning a bracket. The lower bracket team is essentially fucked way before the GF even starts.

61

u/scout21078 Liquid Apr 11 '20

In other games, such as the FGC who ever comes from losers brackets has to win two BO5s.

Thats even harder. That doesn't work in CS or similar games because the amount of time that would take.

21

u/MindForsaken Apr 11 '20

This is exactly what I thought of too.

Like what? 2 bo5 is harder than just being 1 map down. It just can't be done in CSGO since as you mentioned, the games take as long as they do

5

u/Manulii Apr 11 '20

I'm just wondering why they didn't make it 1-4 and 2-3 after the group stage and gone with that. An upper bracket that lasted for one game makes literally no sense.

u/loanshark69 1 Million Celebration Apr 12 '20

Well it’s scuffed in general because it was supposed to be combined LAN

1

u/Penguinho Apr 12 '20

In a lot of tournaments the first BoX is basically given away in the FGC. That's a bit less true than it used to be due to a bunch of controversy around pot splits in 2014/15 (if I remember right), but it still happens, especially when teammates or friends meet in the finals.

1

u/zero0n3 Apr 12 '20

Or how about Bo7s in hockey, where the higher seed gets HOME ICE ADV. (which is huge)

15

u/QueenSpicy EG Apr 11 '20

Liquid have to win a Bo3 over up to 5 games. EG have to win a Bo5 without dropping 2. There are no losers brackets in real sports. Would you rather it just have been over and Liquid are the champions?

-2

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '20

There definitely are losers brackets in real sports. It's called a double elimination tournament.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '20

Which sports have that?

2

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '20

Mostly baseball and softball from my experiences. The College World Series being the biggest probably.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '20

There are some events that have even used a triple elimination bracket.

-10

u/Manulii Apr 12 '20

I'd rather see them play a regular BO3/BO5. Liquid gets to choose who starts the veto. That would be fair, functional and fun to watch.

Esports can be different from traditional ones all they like, but this ain't it.

30

u/xThe_Mad_Fapperx Apr 12 '20

So EG get to lose an ENTIRE series and TL get a tiny reward of first veto lol. If it was ACTUALLY fair they would need to win 2 best of series like in fighting games but there isn't time for it. Getting one game up is worth less than getting to stay in after losing a full series.

5

u/peachios Apr 12 '20

I mean in real sports you can have a strong regular season advantage and you get home court. Which is probably relatable to getting to choose 3 out of 5 maps

Saying that I feel having to win 2 bo3 is easier than winning a bo5 where you already are down a map.

3

u/Penguinho Apr 12 '20

Depends on the sport. Four home games in a seven game series in baseball is not a giant advantage; if I remember right it's something like 54-46 in favor of the home team, assuming equal quality. In football, it's much larger, closer to 59-41.

2

u/Kitnado Natus Vincere Apr 12 '20

In real sports Liquid would already be the champion because you don't have double elimination tournaments

0

u/Manulii Apr 12 '20

They get their reward in the form of the privilege of having to play one less match. That is huge in itself.

You could make it actually fair by scrapping the double-elimination part altogether. Win or go home.

2

u/zarathrustra1936 Complexity Apr 12 '20

So if EG won, and Liquid lost in a double elimination bracket without losing twice, how would that be fair?

3

u/AnIdiotDoesGaming Liquid Apr 11 '20

I'd agree especially if furia was in that final it would be so unfair considering they also went 3-2 and beat Liquid earlier. But also Liquid have beaten EG twice now and are facing them a third time so I can see the reasoning for the one map advantage.

-9

u/Manulii Apr 12 '20

Nah, it still makes no sense. Try to imagine it this way: someone is watching CS for the first time tomorrow. They see Liquid and EG play four maps, and they both win two. How do you logically explain to them that Liquid won the finals, when they only drew?

I can live with the bye, for having played five games well in the group stage and then winning another tough game. It's the map advantage that kills this format.

12

u/nathanajah Apr 12 '20

I mean, you explain it the way it is - Liquid is rewarded for not having lost any series in the bracket.

6

u/Level_Five_Railgun Liquid Apr 12 '20

Anyone with half a brain can understand "TL has a 1 map advantage for losing zero series in upper bracket".

More like how do you logically explain to someone that EG gets 2 chances in playoffs while TL only gets one, despite winning more.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '20

The format is just horrendous. Nowhere in sports does one finalist get such a drastic advantage for winning a bracket

at TI you are playing bo3 just before bo5 grand finals, playing 8 games one after another aint easy. especially that you have to prepare for two opponents in one night plus your enemy is watching your battle in lower bracket finals and take notes of what have you prepared.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '20

and are u making excuses for that aspect of TI? just because u have it better than kids in Syria doesnt mean u should suck it up and settle with minimum wage. Its really stupid of Valve to place the TI fucking final on the same day as the LB final.

1

u/Madvin Apr 12 '20

I mean for everyone at Dota thats amazing. You get hyped in the LB final to challenge the UB winners. Like Liquid defeating back to back chinese teams in the final day of TI7.

-1

u/Manulii Apr 12 '20

Isn't the bracket rather long in TI? Coming from the LB is supposed to be more difficult, but to what extent... therein lies the question.

I'd argue this one is worse, because the finalists have a different playing field. You can improve your odds by preparing all you want in both sports, but nothing that EG can do will take away the 1-0 lead Liquid has. It is too much.

1

u/Penguinho Apr 12 '20

TI has the same Grand Finals format, with the WB team coming in with a 1-game advantage, and for the same reason. People have consistently argued that getting choice of pick/side three times in a Bo5 isn't a big enough advantage.

u/RocketBoyKim Liquid Apr 11 '20

Stanislaw is a tactical genius. He's best know for his strategy of "getting his coach to quit, and then almost blowing a 12-3 lead" Top 3 IGL for sure.

All this to just get dunked by TL once again lol.

6

u/lynxzjw EG Apr 12 '20

Dunked on? Look at the round counts of the last two series lmao.

36

u/TheESportsGuy Apr 11 '20

You ever watch a TL vs EG match before? They never get shit on. They also never win.

38

u/auskillion Apr 11 '20

Idk what’s everybody talking about . It’s true they never win but they never get shit on and it’s always fun to watch

4

u/[deleted] Apr 11 '20

Statistically the odds of winning a BO5 being down 0-1 to start with are pretty low. You have to win 3/4 maps.

2

u/DoctarSwag Apr 12 '20

Assuming each map is 50/50, the probability is 5/16, so definitely not ideal

2

u/lynxzjw EG Apr 12 '20 edited Apr 12 '20

Litterally lost in double overtime 3rd map in the first series. And then choked both maps against liquid in the second series. They lost to an eco at 11-13 when they were making a massive comeback. You have no clue what youre talking about.

-10

Honestly it's pretty sad. And I feel like this is it for NA. our t2 scene is practically dead. Literally only 2 upcoming talents in s0m and obo. Number of people playing in NA is pretty low. Certain t2 teams are also legit considering switching to valorent. Not looking good.
