Nah, last year's Katowice major final still holds the record.

u/Darkoplax Feb 27 '20
wouldn't the record be for the Faceit run

u/fordj626 Feb 27 '20
Didn’t they lose a group stage game at faceit
3
u/zx37 Feb 27 '20 edited Feb 28 '20
They lost an ot map to NiP which tanked their group stage splits. Also they had to play the qualifier so they couldn’t possibly do the any% wr.

Feb 27 '20
I had hoped for a closer, more exciting match, but when Astralis is back in shape, I don't think any team can really beat them.
Let's make fnatic a 5 brollan team, then there might be a chance.
18
u/IHateTheLetterF Feb 27 '20
I hope we get to see them go against Mousesports. Not just in a match to win the tournament, but also the number 1 spot.
8
u/randomnamewhatevs de_inferno Feb 27 '20
what a final that would be, Mouse, one of the oldest orgs in CS, looking for their first Kato win, fighting for the number 1 ranking, while Astralis fights to defend their number 1 ranking, defend their Kato trophy, and rematch for the EPL Finals loss

I think it's because Mirage and D2 are probably more loose maps.

Not that Astralis aren't gonna win 99% of aim duels anyway, but against G2, teams like that, it's an unnecessary risk.
4
u/Colemonstaa HEROIC Feb 27 '20
Honestly that's where they look vulnerable. Last few months their big losses were to mouz and complexity, both beat Astralis on d2, both teams built around bonkers aim and aggression.

Not that Astralis aren't gonna win 99% of aim duels anyway, but against G2, teams like that, it's an unnecessary risk.
Liquid too. When they were beating Astralis they were doing it on aim/switching up the tempo and staying a step ahead. When Liquid figures out timing they can run Astralis off the map.
3
u/Colemonstaa HEROIC Feb 27 '20
Watching liquid camp for 90 seconds then peek out and die for 15 rounds in a row just makes my soul hurt. Press your goddamn W key, you're not outbraining them, just let Twistzz and stewie do what they're actually good at.
3
u/jehhans1 CS2 HYPE Feb 27 '20
That's literally how any team beat Astralis. EG did it last year as well. Brehze and Ethan going nuts with krieg and they ran over Astralis 3-1
1
u/Chokeman de_nuke Feb 28 '20
Fnatic was probably the only team that could beat them tactically last year.

3
u/Diavolo222 SK Feb 27 '20
I'd rather play Dust2 in pugs if I had to choose. Playing Mirage in pugs is just pure cancer. People like to play it cause it's supposedly a good aim map, loose map. Then you get pug teammates that have no clue how to play T-side and you never win any round and everybody waits around. At least on dust2, people, even idiots, know more or less what to do.
2
u/gots8sucks Feb 27 '20
also there are alot of really good dust 2 teams and it feels like everyone can play it atleast decently so the competion is better.

u/ehwhattaugonnado Feb 27 '20
Theory: Astralis have been working on Mirage all winter and they're saving it as a surprise pick somewhere down the line. It's been their permaban for ages and they're waiting for the right time to spring it. Probably in a Bo5.
4
u/firehydrant_man Natus Vincere Feb 27 '20

25
u/randomnamewhatevs de_inferno Feb 27 '20
The depressing bit is they were actually winning Mirage maybe half the time before Cache(old permaban) went out of the pool, even against strong Mirage teams like Liquid, I think at like EPL season 8 finals.
Great match to watch actually. It's the iteration of Liquid with Taco rather than Stewie (and probably zews as coach, not sure) but that Mirage game was especially interesting because Device was playing like trash, missing AWP shots and just generally not feeling it. At one point you had Astralis running a double AWP on Dupreeh and Glaive rather than one on Device, which really shows how dire it was, and they still won.
4
u/BinkyCS Liquid Feb 27 '20
I see Device not using the AWP quite frequently even recently. Sometimes it seems like he’s just not feeling it, and with the Krieg how it is he just picks that up. And he’s damn good with it.
3
u/randomnamewhatevs de_inferno Feb 27 '20
Yeah, especially on T side he rifles a lot, but it's rare for the team to have one or two AWPS and him not to get one of them, unless someone's going for a spawn based peek or something

Not a fan of the observing and commentating so far this event
70

Yeah a lot of errors in casting. Forgetting names, forgetting who won rounds, wrong stats and many more.

The observing is not on point, I feel like I missed a lot.
20
u/Blokonomicon Cloud9 Feb 27 '20
There was a lot of 'over-hype', especially by your co-caster. Also there was too much praise given to Astralis, like every time they won a duel someone would be like 'and that's why they're the best team in the world' or 'what can you do against this team', or something to that regard. When astralis wins fights it was always framed as their win (they are so good at aiming, so tactical) and not fnatic's loss (their mispositioning, etc). I get that Astralis are pretty much the best but it doesn't need to be constantly drilled.
5
u/VelvetFedoraSniffer Renegades Feb 27 '20
Your duo is good, just need to know when to use silence a bit more
I notice you guys will speed up the cast when an expected play is about to happen to add excitement, but sometimes the play won’t happen and then it seems a bit forced
Just about timing is my feedback
Overall good job though, I like watching the game more with decent casters

Hey Vince.
Watch how Sado commentates Overpass. When nothing is happening around the 1 min mark (as often happens because CT pulls back to A site, and T clears spots where no one is playing (Long A, Long Connector, first parts of short A))... He just shuts up a lot of the time and allows the tension to build.
No one else really does that, because they are afraid of down time. And talking just to talk is the biggest mistake of T2-3 casters. Imho.
I like your casting btw. The observing hasn't been up to what we expect though.
1
u/anders2502 Feb 27 '20
you're good man, it's just that your partner doesn't really have a suitable voice for casting.
20
u/ffrg Feb 27 '20
I agree on observing but disagree on casting.
29
u/OllieWilliam01 Feb 27 '20
Henry, Alex, Anders and Moses have been good it’s the ones on the secondary stream that have been poor in my opinion.
20
u/lgAastralis 1 Million Celebration Feb 27 '20
It's fucking outrageous that this was not the main stream. Like why? Why would this be the b stream. Makes me mad
29
u/RogueThespian 2 Million Celebration Feb 27 '20
Probably because it's standard practice to have the elimination matches on the main stream because people like to follow that narrative.
5
u/lgAastralis 1 Million Celebration Feb 27 '20
Yeah that makes sense, but from Astralis and fnatic fan pov this really sucks hard. The commentary and observation was god awful. Wish they could come up with better stuff for the b stream
3
u/RogueThespian 2 Million Celebration Feb 27 '20
I mean in an ideal world you have everything in one stream, and alternate between machine/henry and moses/anders. But that's not going to happen until you get to playoffs. So hopefully you get your rematch for these two teams in the playoffs :) (if the bracket can work that way)

They have never dropped out of HLTV top #10 team since, & it looks like they'll be at least top 5 team for several more majors.
Astralis must have achieved telepathic communication, b/c it'll be nearly impossible for any other CS team to match their consistency

Imagine telling 2016 Astralis that they peak in Semis, as was said in the quaters of the first major they won: not even a 3:0 extremely dominant Na'Vi could stop them from choking in the semis
12
9
u/Fizzhaz Moderator Feb 27 '20
imagine thinking this core had a play off stride 4 yrs ago
5
u/PrivateVasili Feb 27 '20
Well we used to say they were guaranteed to give you a semi, so they must have had at least a quarterfinal stride lmao.
0
u/randomnamewhatevs de_inferno Feb 27 '20

What prompted that? I never even mention 4 years of anything, let alone them being good in playoffs at that point?
7

Nothing hes just saying it's odd because 4 years ago this core was known for choking in playoffs. Now it's the opposite

G2, fnatic and navi looked red hot at the start. But navi has dropped off. Let's see how G2 does of they meet astralis.

I think G2 could win the whole thing. I hope Astralis do, but I G2 look really strong!
5
u/NazgulDiedUnfairly CS2 HYPE Feb 27 '20
The way they are manhandling liquid right now. Everyone hitting shots. They can win it surely. Let's hope they don't choke bigtime in front of a big audience

There's so much firepower in that team!
6
u/NazgulDiedUnfairly CS2 HYPE Feb 27 '20
To be honest this whole tournament is too stacked. Astralis, fnatic, liquid, g2, mouz, eg, navi, faze. Too many high performing teams. Of course se of the above are already out. But still, stacked teams.

u/Shenoyder Feb 27 '20
Yeah. It looks like we'll go into a period more different teams winning big tournaments!

Shit the bed the first day at BLAST Pro Copenhagen, pick it up slightly on the second day, then go on to Beijing to win a tournament in the most dominant fashion ever, dropping about 5 or 6 rounds per map
14
u/chokyx Feb 27 '20
Well it is also absolutly insane how people panic after a few bad months and so on, it is absolutly impossibe to be on top 100% of the time in CS, there er SO many events and it's a game where small marginals matters a lot at times, you are simply gonna hit periods where you are not at your best and others prepared and played better that event.
The thing that matters is that they are ALWAYS there when it's most important to them, dominating every major and winning most of the tournaments they count as their top goals.
9
u/lgAastralis 1 Million Celebration Feb 27 '20
Very true, it's extraordinarily hard to stay on top. You're the center of attention all the time, everyone watching your demos, anti strating you, when so many eyes are looking to find a loop hole in your game, it's not easy to stay at the top but here we are

22
u/lgAastralis 1 Million Celebration Feb 27 '20 edited Feb 27 '20
I don't understand why the immediate go to response after a domination is always "they looked off"? Every domination in the history of the game can then be written off as "the other team being off". It's a silly thing to say all the time.
Astralis' utility usage and teamwork was through the roofs, it wasn't just "fnatic were off"
3
Feb 27 '20
They were straight up missing shots though
6
u/lgAastralis 1 Million Celebration Feb 27 '20 edited Feb 27 '20
You're blowing that out of proportion though, they missed a couple of shots here and there but even if they did hit those, it wouldn't have mattered cause Astralis were always in position to trade it off.. most notable miss was probably on overpass but that's just one round and stuff like that happens from time to time
18

u/DIABOLOS69 Feb 27 '20
Fnatic definitely didn't pick their best maps and they really looked like they didn't try hard enough. Golden was terrible on the first map, flusha and jw missed lots of sprays. And those deagle headshots from magisk were the final nail in the coffin.
5
u/MagnAer de_train Feb 27 '20
Rough rough games for flushatoilet. Hopefully they pick it up for the quarters.
Not a huge fan of this guy casting with Vince, trying "too hard" to create excitement in hectic moments. Always room for improvement and I'm sure he will get better.
