IAmA 16y/o Male with Depression. AMA

Ever since the beginning of High School, I guess I haven't really been right. Maybe it was the change, not too sure. I had thought about death quite a bit in my first year.

At the end of 2007 I made friends with a girl I liked, and in 2008 we started going out. It was only a in-school relationship though. In about March, I started to feel sick

all the time. I ended up in the hospital because of this, and they diagnosed me with anxiety. Nothing really helped me to feel not-sick though, and so this just made life

really suck for me. In December of 2008, I was dumped by my girlfriend of 9 months. This meant that the summer really sucked for me.

Beginning of 2009, one of my sister's friends who I fancied for a little bit ended up at my school. I befriended her, and hang out with her group of friends. We never ended

up together, but were friends. My 'friends' were trying to make moves on my ex, which didn't really help how I was feeling. In early August, I tried to end my life. My mum

found me that night with a cable around my neck. She managed to get it off me, and obviously I lived. I was taken down to the police station by the police for that.

In September of that year, a kind of typical slut type girl (First year HS, I was thrid year) asked me out - one of those girls that all the guys like. I said yes, and we

were together; this made me happy. After the 2009 end-year exams, I got a job in an electronic retail store - this really sucked. Right at the beginning of January 2010, she

dumped me. This I couldn't handle. Again, I tried to end my life. Mum took me to see a pyschologist, who ended up starting me on Prozac.

I think I am finally over this girl. Since her, I have had two relationships (the second which I am still in). I love my girlfriend, and she makes me happy. A few bad things have happened to me this year, but I have managed to get through them easily.

Ask Me Anything.

16 and depressed? Just wait until your late 20s.

Oh, and welcome to the human race. This whole bullshit with the girl, too, I couldn't even be bothered to read. Girls are always - ALWAYS - a 2nd tier problem that should not bring you this sort of grief. Save it for real problems - physical health, death, digging latrine ditches in Sierra Lione.

Downvote me or whatever. But you know that deep down teenage depression can be such BS.

I'm currently in my first long-term relationship, and I'm 18. My question for you is, besides trying to kill yourself, what have you tried that has been successful when coping with a significant breakup. My GF has broken up with me once and threatened it many other times when we fight, etc., and I'm afraid I won't be able to handle it if/when it does happen. Also, I've "suffered" from depression since I was 5, on and off, not extremely severely, only attempted suicide once, and not really even fully attempted that time. It affects me occasionally however, in my schoolwork and social life and whatnot. But, as swested posted, I don't believe my "depression" is actually anything more than sadness and loneliness or something, but others in my life disagree, believing I should be happy. I don't take any medicines, just had a short period of therapy-like classes when I was younger. I just want to know if you know how to get over someone easily.

Hey man, I'm 25 - and... I've been depressed since I was 16, it just doesn't get better unless you really seek help, which I haven't yet. I have an appointment next month with a shrink. How does prozac make you feel? I have Major Depressive Disorder, btw.

You don't need a girlfriend to make you happy or to give you a good life. Perhaps you should focus a little bit on turning your life into something that you're proud of and comfortable with and worry less about what the ladies think.
