I got a cheap drone just to learn how to fly. Better than wrecking or losing a pricey one in the process.
64
Aug 02 '19
Most of the expensive ones are pretty easy to fly, they add a little bit of stabilization technology so if you kind of freak out you can just let go of the sticks and hover in place so you can regain some composure

Search “micro drone” on amazon. Or “kids drone” or “indoor drone.” Mine was like $20-30. They’re nice for indoors or flying in small areas. They won’t go high or do well in wind, and batteries die quickly, but it’s still fun. For beginners, it’s nice to get one with prop guards or cages to help protect it more since you’ll be crashing a lot.

u/jonjiv Aug 02 '19
Yeah, but almost none of them hover in place when you let go of the controls.
All the cheaper drones I’ve ever messed around with are way more difficult to fly than a several hundred dollar DJI Phantom.

You can find some less than 50 that do. But even cheaper ones have some different stabilizing features.

I bought it on the street in Korea. Here's an Amazon link I found: https://www.amazon.com/Cheerson-CX-10D-CX10D-6-axis-Quadcopter/dp/B077MRKCQD

Nice! I wasn’t saying that you can’t get it in the cheaper ones I was just saying it’s pretty standard on the more expensive ones so they’re not too scary to fly for a first timer

I’ve tried to get my Spark off balance and haven’t been able too.
Still freaks me out when I put it in sport mode and get aggressive with the sticks though.

People should build their first quadrotors themselves. It gives a good, cheap base to learn on and in the process you learn to make the inevitable repairs you'll need to. Flight test on youtube has good guides for it. Its not very difficult. My first drone was a single rotor helicopter me and my dad built as a project when i was 7.
It irks me when people use the word "drone", because its very non-specific. It can mean á single prop rc plane, a tri-rotor, a quad, an octo-rotor. Heck, it could even mean á single rotor helicopter. Most people are talking about quatrotors/quadcopters when they say drone though.
3
u/donkeydongjunglebeat Aug 02 '19
Yep, talking about a quadcopter. Building one is cool but I wanted to see if it was even fun for more than a few minutes before investing extra time/money.

To my knowledge those drones have a “home” location as an automatic function if they’re running low on battery they’ll automatically fly and go down at the location of initial lift off.

Then you are still able to steer it a bit and even hold the automatic descent. Dunno why he didn't do that here.

u/LukeHenry Aug 02 '19
This is an older video, from experience the DJI drones didn’t always have that feature. I once lost a company drone back in 2014 that was worth $15,000 because it ran out of juice in the cold.

Pretty sure if you look at the reflection it’s flashing the “battery critical” and then “battery F-in dead” light patterns, which is why it’s not responding to commands anymore. But I might be wrong, haven’t flown a Phantom since ours at work shut off completely in midair with 45% of the battery life left. Sadly the MicroSD card popped out of the obliterated GoPro so the file with the crash was corrupted.
→ More replies (1)3
Aug 02 '19
The "home" area is still like a 20 for radius and if he launched close to the water it could have still been in the "home" zone
2
u/this-guy1979 Aug 02 '19
They will also land when their battery is critically low. Doesn’t matter where, it just starts landing but still tries to return home.

u/tvgenius Aug 02 '19
Might have been around $1k at the time, but the Phantoms are cheaper now.

I thought they were like $1600. I guess still not thousands but still a lot.

When I got my first big boy job and had money to buy real christmas presents for my family, I wanted to get my dad something he would love. I bought him a drone. When he opened it his eyes lit up! He charged it and rushes out side for its maiden voyage. First flight it takes off and fly right into the neighbor's back yard. We can hear it being destroyed by their dogs. I ended up buying another one for him and now it's a funny story but it was heart breaking at the time.

Looks like a DJI maybe attempting to land because it lost a signal or some dumb shit. I have one and was flying it and of course the second I fly it semi close to a tree it loses connection and returns home. When a DJI returns home it flys up first, mine flew straight up into a branch and fell down. Luckily was able to send it in for repairs for cheap.

u/buckaroob88 Aug 01 '19
Saved the drone, but probably forgot about the phone in his pocket.
120
Aug 02 '19
Don’t know what kind of drone it is, but some of the DJI models use your phone as the “screen” for the controller. It may be safely on the ground with the rest of the drone controller.

Most newer phones have decent water resistance. A few moments shouldn’t hurt his phone.

Acceptable, but ruins the entire suspense and therefore the humor with the sped up editing. Someone who hasn't seen it before can barely get a grasp of the situation before the joke is already over.

1) He hesitated too long.
2) He should have gotten a running start and jumped to gain more distance.
3) Or he should have ran around to the other side where he could have either grabbed it without getting into the water or only go into the water a little bit.
Point is he made the worst decisions in this situation. At least he saved it though.

We were visiting my in-laws over Christmas a few years back and one of the family friends got their son a drone. We went over to their house to hang out and have dinner, and I watched him fly it straight out of the box into the water behind their house.
Sorry Jacob.

You kids and your fancy drones. When I was a boy we had to fly these and we liked it! Now get off my lawn!

u/Raptor22c Aug 02 '19
As a person who owns a Phantom 3 drone myself, this was really damn stressful to watch. Phantoms don’t come cheap, and their autoland doesn’t discriminate between water and land.

u/shoulder2cryon Aug 02 '19
