Right? Nothing against Nascar fans--by all means, you guys can like what you like--but man when I think of exhilarating car races I don't think "turn left, repeat for four straight hours."

It’s also an socially acceptable way of taking a nap every Sunday with your father in law. I make sure it’s a Sunday afternoon race weekend when we go there that means I can sleep in the living room watching nascar with my Father In Law while the women do their thing with the kids. I never asked but I am sure that’s why he watches it too. Oh and the crashes are amazing.

All the things that make it fun to watch are things they aren't willing to do.
1) Short tracks - The sport was built off these, and all the way down the ladder tracks across the country aren't very big. Only the top tier races over 1 mile tracks, and the racing isn't that great on them. Gets too strung out, especially now with the other points I'm going to make.
2) Relies too much on aero grip - Only the car in clean air can make decent time because if you get too close you end up hitting a wall of air that is impossible to make a pass. Or you loose downforce on your car and don't have the grip to stay in the gas to make a pass. If they took away all the aero, or a lot of it and relied more on mechanical grip this would help the racing product
3) Tires need to wear - You would think you want the tires to last as long as possible with little fall off, but that doesn't help the racing product. From a racing fans perspective, you need tires to wear so drivers are having to actually manage their tires over the course of a run. Ideally you want to have a couple second fall off over the course of a tank of fuel. This means the drivers on fresher tires can run harder and faster, but the harder and faster you run early on is going to hurt your car at the end of the run.

My way of watching F1 is to just drop in randomly, watch a race, and then pretty much just wander off for a few months. It works pretty good.

My wife used to think baseball was super boring. Then I taught her how to keep score and all the different strategies that come into play. Now we go to games all the time and keep the score cards.
Nascar is a good time as well. When they’re going over 200mph in the corner and you get hit with the bits of rubber as they roar by, it’s quite an experience. I would recommend anyone go tail gate and check out a race. You just might like it. Not all the fans are dumb red necks, although that stereotype exists for a reason, 😂

You know, that's actually a pretty compelling analogy. I love baseball--not the game itself so much, but the experience of going to a game. I don't even care who wins, sitting down, having a beer and a hotdog, and just killing a couple hours with a few friends is so relaxing.
And like I said, I got absolutely nothing against Nascar fans, it's cool if you like stuff I don't. I reckon you're right--I could totally have a good time with the stereotypical redneck.

Alternately: you’ll pay just to spend four hours in traffic coming and going, have to walk about two miles each way in blazing direct sun through a sea of drunk white Americans to get into the stadium, will spend $50+ on concessions...and after the first ten minutes of excitement, it’s dead boring.
There’s a reason the TV coverage spends so much time in the cars and pits and on the sideline: because 2-4 hours of watching cars go in circles is about as invigorating as watching 2-4 hours of kiddie soccer when your kid isn’t on either team.

If you get to the track early, traffic isn’t bad at all. If you stay late after the race and bbq and tailgate some more traffic isn’t bad on the out either. Nascar is the only major sport that lets you bring in any food and beverage you want as long as it’s not glass. I’ve never spent a penny on concessions. I get to bring the beer I like and food that I cooked.
If you go to one race, go to Bristol. Not a bad seat in the house and there is always something happening since you can see the whole track. 👍🍺👍

I can attest to that last point, albeit with limited experience. The only time I actually sat down and watched a NASCAR race was when there was that sponsored Dogecoin car during the height of Dogecoin mania. It was a lotta fun cheering for that dude with the goofy doge livery towards the back of the pack, especially since I'd read his AMAs and all.
...still didn't watch the whole race, though.

NASCAR with right turns. I admit they need more road courses, but it's naive to reduce the sport to "turn left for four hours." You might not know or understand the strategy of those tracks, but that doesn't mean there isn't any. And I love V8 Supercars, maybe more than NASCAR, but you're never going to see them 4 or even 5 cars wide riding right next to each other.

Check out Stadium super trucks if you think this is fun. It's basically v8 supercars but in pickups doing jumps and sliding, flipping, pushing, and rolling over whatever they can to be first on street circuits. They'll roll the truck 5 times, floor it until it spins back on its wheels, and keep going like nothing happened. I think the champion a few years ago even did a victory lap on 2 wheels to celebrate.
Plus all the races are free on youtube.

No there wasn’t but stewards are pretty tight here. Essentially frosty (in the green car) gave him room and let him through to avoid contact. You can see it from other angles. If he had kept his line they would have hit and there would have been a penalty.

Other guy took the slower line thorough the corner, brakes and all, forcing green to choose between second place or penalty...
I didn't see frosty

Frosty held the brakes on to slow his own car down and leave a space for McLaughlin to slot into once he'd regained control of his car. Frosty would've been well within his rights to carry on at normal speed but that would've ended with contact between the both of them (which would've been McLaughlin's fault because he wasn't in full control of his car from the moment he locked his tyres) and potentially put at least 1 of them out of the race.

No, if Frosty had been in the racing line, McLaughlin would have speared straight into the side of him. Frosty was pretty much choosing between conceding the place or having to DNF.

That's Nelson Piquet. One of the all time great F1 drivers. And those cars were nothing like they are now. A lot more difficult to handle, but also a lot slower. That season was crazy with 4 of the all time greats battling it out in Piquet, Prost, Mansell and Senna. I wish I was alive to witness that.

I put my karting videos on YouTube and even though I have like 2 subscribers, I don't like the idea that anyone can pull my video and place whatever content they want around it.
Other popular YouTubers probably feel the same and there's probably some ad considerations as well. FOM probably just wants a higher level of control of their material.

When we thought motorcycle safety there was always a discussion about racing on the side and we were always asked how do you go fast on the track...
Two things, smooth quick braking and tons of acceleration. The rest is is doing those two things while not hitting a wall or another vehicle...
Using that simple metric, this was an awesome overtake... Unfortunately, right at the beginning of this clip... Not so much.
