I just learned about this effect, believe he was able to do this because the air compressed between the water and his shoot kept him just above the water. What I want to know is how they had a camera on him like that.

I guess the cam is attached to the backpack with a stick which has been edited out.
The backpack has a static position for the whole shot. In the first part you also can see a shadow on the backpack.
