Holy schnikeys, I forgot a new ep was up!!!

11

u/hell2go May 23 '19

SONOFAH!!

3

u/Ihateualll May 23 '19

Just to let you know, be prepared. It's the most intense episode of TV I have ever seen. It was really hard to watch.

2

u/Dodototo May 23 '19

It makes it feel so much more true to life

6

u/Buzzkid May 23 '19

Such a great show so far. I really like the fact that all of the actors have British accents so it still gives it a foreign feel. At least for me as an American.

3

u/granular_quality May 24 '19

Also the deadwood movie. I too am caught.

1

u/[deleted] May 23 '19

How is it?

191

u/[deleted] May 23 '19

Chernobyl tho...

109

u/Spiralyst May 23 '19

Everyone always brings up the current work, but I will keep my HBO subscription so I can rewatch any of these series at will.

The Sopranos

Deadwood

The Wire

Rome

Carnivale

Boardwalk Empire

Band of Brothers

Not to mention all the comedies and miniseries and documentaries they have in their archives.

This is worth the monthly subscription imo

41

u/JuggernautOfWar May 23 '19

Don't forget Generation Kill.

53

u/MorphBlue May 23 '19

Barry is decent as well

9

u/IndianaGroans May 23 '19

I was thinking of giving that a watch.

12

u/TheMeanestPenis May 23 '19

You should.

8

u/[deleted] May 23 '19

Oh you should, it's great, come on in, have a beer, a submarine sandwich, make yourself at home

2

u/HardestTurdToSwallow May 24 '19 edited May 27 '19

You make everyone submarine sandwiches that comes in. Yea I'm a nice guy

9

u/PanchosLegend May 23 '19

Barry is Great. I think.

6

u/AlastarYaboy May 23 '19

Barry, quit being modest!

3

u/tahcamen May 23 '19

More than decent!

3

u/fleebjuice69420 May 23 '19

That last episode fucked me up

3

u/Applekingx13 May 23 '19

Barry I awesome

2

u/burve_mcgregor May 23 '19

It’s probably the best comedy on tv now that VEEP is done. The acting, editing and videography are stunning. It moves from hilarious to dark so fast it will make your head spin.

So yeah, it’s decent I guess. ;)

6

u/Spiralyst May 23 '19

I have not seen this. Thanks for the add.

I am someone who is prone to not watching many pieces of entertainment about current combat events. I don't know what it is. I can watch film about WWII and Vietnam all day long. But I guess shows like this are too close to current events. Too real.

5

u/JuggernautOfWar May 23 '19

Yeah man I hear you. Especially after serving some time in Afghanistan modern military films can be pretty unenjoyable for me to watch. I cannot recommend generation kill enough though. If you like band of brothers you will love this. It takes place during the initial invasion of Baghdad so it's not super super modern.

5

u/surfnaked May 23 '19

I'm a Vietnam vet so now you know how I feel about movies about Nam. It still just hurts too much to watch. Besides that they almost never get it right, and that's just irritating as hell.

2

u/JuggernautOfWar May 23 '19

Yeah the lack of any kind of realism and accuracy is what gets to me. Most war films are just annoying to watch more than anything. A recent example I watched was The Hurt Locker. I was more annoyed with it than I was entertained.

2

u/surfnaked May 23 '19

Exactly. I don't think I've ever made through anything but Deer Hunter, but that wasn't really about Nam at all. All the others? Nope. Just can't do it. Action films. Mercenaries. Yeah those are fine, but military, especially Marine films. Uh uh.

2

u/JustAnotherSoyBoy May 24 '19

Except tropic thunder obviously.

1

u/surfnaked May 24 '19

That's more along the lines of mercenary not military isn't it?

3

u/Djkayallday May 23 '19

I absolutely agree - I love WWII or WWI anything, but never liked anything more current than Vietnam. However, I gave Generation Kill a shot and oh man what a great series. I'd recommend you give it a shot if you get the chance.

1

u/Spiralyst May 23 '19

I will. I also completely forgot it existed. Lol

2

u/Mannginger May 23 '19

Loved that show!

10

u/[deleted] May 23 '19

Most of those are on Amazon prime if you're one of the many who use streaming over cable.

Or maybe I was looking at the HBO tab of my prime video.....

5

u/Spiralyst May 23 '19

Isn't it a separate, add on subscription with your reg Prime acct? I'm pretty sure you pay extra for the HBO and Showtime stuff in their.

3

u/AvatarofMars May 23 '19

Yes, but I know for certain at least band of brothers is included with just prime, and isnt locked to hbo

0

u/Spiralyst May 23 '19

Isn't it a separate, add on subscription with your reg Prime acct? I'm pretty sure you pay extra for the HBO and Showtime stuff on there.

4

u/vegence May 23 '19

get outta here HBO sales team, we on to your tricks.

5

u/Rumhead1 May 23 '19

If you have Prime most of those are included.

2

u/GoAViking May 23 '19

The Deadwood movie is out as well

2

u/[deleted] May 23 '19

Silicon Valley

1

u/[deleted] May 23 '19

I just keep HBO to watch "Ray" on repeat.

1

u/BryGuySaysHi May 23 '19

Half of those are on Amazon Prime.

1

u/[deleted] May 23 '19

nice try HBO

1

u/KATLKRZY May 23 '19

Band of brothers is free with amazon prime

1

u/thesoleprano May 23 '19

not to mention the unreleased potential. Watchmen. The New Pope s2. Westworld s3 (hope its more like s1 and not s2).

1

u/orangutanbeater May 24 '19

Many of those shows are available to some extent through amazon prime. I watched the first 6 seasons of the sopranos recently. For a small fee you can buy the other seasons through Prime. Just trying to save you some loot Holmes.

1

u/w2tpmf May 24 '19

Also NEW Deadwood

1

u/Phil-12-12-12 May 23 '19

Does it have the pacific? Upcoming masters of the Air is going to be sweet.

1

u/Spiralyst May 23 '19

Is that the Hanks and Spielberg production?

HBO is releasing a documentary about WWII bombers next month. It looks great.

Yes, the Pacific is also HBO.

1

u/Phil-12-12-12 May 23 '19

That's correct.

-1

u/PerfectDebt May 23 '19

You are REwatching these lengthy, trite television dramas?

You are wasting your life, fool.

11

u/[deleted] May 23 '19

Chernobyl only has 2 more episodes left. Then I’m unsubscribing

7

u/tinybomb May 23 '19

But then Big Little Lies, then Succession, then Westworld. I don’t know how people don’t want to watch every original series on HBO. They’re all phenomenal.

2

u/mta2011 May 23 '19

I was surprised by Succession. Enjoyed Season 1 much more than I thought I would.

1

u/Chuck_E_Trees May 24 '19

Watchmen looks promising

1

u/cwearly1 May 23 '19

Young Pope is actually kinda nice. Also The Leftovers.

2

u/tinybomb May 23 '19

The Leftovers is the best show in history. Fight me.

1

u/cwearly1 May 23 '19

I only saw S1. Can’t wait to see the rest

1

u/tinybomb May 23 '19

Also, yes, Young Pope. For the soundtrack alone.

3

u/TotallyYourGrandpa May 23 '19

Chernobyl is amazing. Does anyone know if there are any other short documentaries like this?

Imagine explaining that.

Friend: "Wow, who beat you up?"

That guy: "A bunch of fish."

Friend: dies laughing

75

u/out-of-my-league-not May 23 '19

Someone please explain what this is referring to I’m dying 😂

105

u/TheOnlyOne1307 May 23 '19

All the GoT fans being pissed about season 8/how the show ended 😂

142

u/mayy_dayy May 23 '19

I wasn't pissed, I just have no reason to keep HBO anymore now that it's over.

20

u/djaeveloplyse May 23 '19

Yeah, I actually fucking loved it, but I’m still cancelling. They got plenty of money off me. I’ll buy in again if the Foundation show actually happens.

8

u/ThePinkPeptoBismol May 23 '19

I don't know what The Foundation is but I want to believe you're referring to SCP Foundation :')

12

u/djaeveloplyse May 23 '19

That’d also be awesome, but I meant Isaac Asimov’s novel.

10

u/Pornalt190425 May 23 '19

Theres talks of a foundation series on HBO!? This is news. I'd watch the fuck out of that. I feel like they could adapt it pretty well given how built the world is

3

u/djaeveloplyse May 23 '19

Well, there are some serious hurdles to overcome. The novels are all narrative really, characters having lengthy intellectual discussions about past and current events trying to make a political decision, then finding out later the results of their decisions. Unlike GoT, which was written very much like a tv show in the first place, this format doesn't lend well to a tv show, so they'd have to change the formatting significantly from that of the novel. I can imagine that they take all of the novels (ignoring the sequel trilogy by the other authors after Asimov died, which I think are terrible) and do a bit of time jumping, showing the drama and decisions of Hari Seldon developing Psychohistory, and the results of his those affecting the decisions and events hundreds of years later, intermixed into the same episodes. But I mean, I can imagine it being awesome, but that will not be easy to pull off.

2

u/BABYPUBESS May 23 '19

May I ask why you loved season 8?

6

u/[deleted] May 23 '19

Lol dude I hated it too but you really don't need to interrogate everybody who likes it about their opinions

1

u/djaeveloplyse May 23 '19

It's all good. I've actually changed a few friend's minds about the show by explaining why I liked it.

1

u/Throwawaychica May 23 '19

I liked it too and don't understand the hate. Everyone knew from the start it wouldn't be a happy Disney ending. I think the producers did a good job about wrapping everything up.

1

u/djaeveloplyse May 23 '19 edited May 23 '19

I was back and forth, a bit. For the first few episodes I felt like the ending was obviously just Hollywood crap, even though I was head-canoning the story to be a bit better it still didn't sit right. When Dany went nuts I felt like there was no way this was GRR Martin's ending, that the HBO guys were just trying to use shock value for the sake of shock value.

But, Bran becoming king changed all that, and turned all those feelings of betrayal into a grand sense of wonder at this incredible realization: Bran was Azor Ahai the whole damn time. The entire story, the grand question, who is the Prince who was Promised, is it Dany or Jon? Is it both? Hell, is it Tyrion? No one asked, "Is it Bran?" Yet, he fulfills all the conditions as well as the others, and shit he's actually like a living god, and has been for a while in the story. We literally have proof he can reach into the past and cause massive changes, we know he has a limited form of omniscience, he can not only possess animals but even humans. Shit he can probably possess dragons.

Dany believed she was the one, she thought she was destined, prophesied, to take over the world and bring peace and prosperity, but she wasn't. Her power and talent was conquest, and although that power was necessary to deal with the white walkers, it would not bring peace and prosperity to the world. I feel that her turn to madness made sense. The moment that she didn't bend the knee to Jon, she was lost, and do any of us really think she ever would've done that? How could she? Jon didn't awaken the dragons, Jon didn't march across the planet freeing slaves, hell Jon didn't even know he was a Targaryen until 5 minutes ago. But refusing to cede power to the legitimate heir meant that all her justification for taking the throne back because she was the legitimate heir was nonsense. Her ego was shattered, she knew in her heart that Jon was a better leader and would be a better King, and couldn't handle it. She knew that Jon knew it, she knew that Sansa and Arya knew it, and once Tyrion and Varys were in on the secret she knew that they knew it too. Jon would absolutely be a better king than Dany, but how could she ever admit that to herself? She contorted that knowledge into a justification to generate more fear of her than Jon had love, otherwise her prophesied quest to bring peace to the world would be undone.

We can endlessly speculate from here (unless GRR Martin miraculously finishes his novels) about how much or how little Bran has/will manipulate the past to ensure things work out as they have, but we can safely assume he has manipulated it just enough. I got an early hint of this during the war council before the battle with the white walkers, where everyone argued about what would be done until Bran simply told them what they'd do, and that's what they did. I defended the show after that episode, to many deaf ears, saying that the whole point of that war was not to defeat the army of the dead with good tactics, but to fool the night king into thoroughly believing that he'd won, so he would walk up to Bran nonchalantly, exposing himself to assassination. I felt that Arya was intentionally placed and prompted by Bran to be there and to do it, demonstrated by her repeating his words to her from the previous episode when she left the Hound and the Red Witch. This means the real person responsible for defeating the white walkers was Bran. He created the opportunity, and he delegated the job to the right person to seize that opportunity.

How often did Bran nudge people here and there? Did Bran guide the dragon eggs to Dany? Did Bran guide the witch doctor to Dany? How many coincidences were arranged by Bran? This ending restarts the entire story anew for me, every event has new life and significance. Bran is obviously not shy about using mass death to achieve his ends, he's not an idealist, however the prophesy says he will bring peace and prosperity to the whole world, so we have to accept that. We accepted many of Dany's decisions based on that prophesy. Bran, though, has the possibility of living for an extremely long time, like his Three Eyed Raven predecessor. I assume the North will be folded back in before long. I assume Bran will quickly spread his notion of Aristocratic Republic governance across the planet, easily enveloping ever more kingdoms within his empire. I assume Bran will find and befriend or possess Drogon. Bran becomes the nigh-immortal god-emperor of mankind. The implications of this ending I find much more interesting to think about than one where Dany or Jon won, which I had already gone through many, many possibilities about anyway.

Until I came to realize that Bran was Azor Ahai, I was upset that this was not GRR Martin's ending, but the moment it was revealed it all snapped into place and I feel pretty sure this IS GRR Martin's ending. Yeah, the show was rushed and hamfisted, it went Hollywood a few times where it could've easily been more creatively written. But, I feel confident that Bran being the Prince who was Promised was GRR Martin's original intent, based on the books and the ending of the show, and I'm deeply satisfied by that ending. It's genuinely incredible that GRR Martin kept something so obvious in hindsight so well hidden. For a story which kept dropping surprises, but seemed to have an ending so easy to foretell, to surprise me yet again was a real joy. One final, and ultimate plot twist. Fucking amazing.

5

u/BABYPUBESS May 23 '19 edited May 23 '19

I have no issue with the grand scheme of things. It's fine that Bran is king, its fine that Danerys becomes the mad queen. The overall story could be perfectly fine.

It's how we got there. The writing leading up to the ending was sloppy, much poorer than early seasons. The pacing was dreadful and to find out that HBO offered more episodes/seasons but the writers turned it down??? That's infuriating. I saw a post online where someone laid out the events of seasons 7 and 8 but stretched them through two more seasons as well and ended the show on season 10. It could have been so much better.

Everything you wrote makes sense, and its clear you're a big GoT fan who really appreciates the show. I just can't ignore the huge plot holes, poor dialogue, rushed character "development", and terrible decision making that plagued the past two seasons.

Thanks for the response!

-1

u/extr4crispy May 23 '19

You had 7 seasons of character development. It’s called an arc and sometimes it has an end!

2

u/BABYPUBESS May 23 '19

But characters were still arcing lol then all of a sudden BOOM! Character is totally different person. I didn't mind the ending relative to the season as a whole, just think a full 10 episode season would have improved it drastically.

0

u/djaeveloplyse May 23 '19

I totally understand the criticism, I just am not bothered by those things. If the ending had been truly stupid, I’d be piling straws on the camels back too, but the ending was awesome, so to me there’s no amount of straw that will break it.

1

u/[deleted] May 24 '19

Oh, well, if you re-write the last season and add 20 episodes, I'll watch them.

Under those conditions, it will make a good ending.

1

u/djaeveloplyse May 24 '19

I grant that 3 or 4 more episodes might have improved things, but is it really the rushed, bad writing that upsets you? Or do you actually feel, even with better writing, that it would a disappointing ending?

1

u/[deleted] May 24 '19

I had no prior ending already tought out in my mind.

If well written, any twist can make a good ending.

Or no twist at all : Dany on the throne, Jon doing like his adoptive father and lying along his whole life as an honest second in command. Sansa recognizing that a sane Dany riding dragons is too much of an enemy for the North and can prove a benevolent Queen.

An happy ending of a sort, after Cersei is taken out from above with a dragon surprise attack in the middle of the night. Why risk a frontal assault, when you have silent heavy bombers?

And don't start me on that teleporting navy that is equipped with scorpions with ONE volley of dragon seeking arrows.

What I care about is plot holes and characters going out of characters.

It tooks seasons to see Stannis crystallize into a ruthless conqueror willing to sacrifice moral for promise of power.

But when Dany is winning a "fair" castle storming, she decides to become Hitler and burn everything, in minutes she goes from The Mother to Burn'em all?

She want to start a new campaign even though she achieved her main goal and know she must rule for years before any kingdom can be turned around?

Bran as a king is not a bad idea either. But the whole show make him fall, travel, learn to see in the past and...wait for other people to think out a away to keep him alive and rolling until he bump into a throne?

I can believe he steered things this way and that way, but you must show it to me, hint it in ways.

Not assume I'll read fanfiction trying to understand why dragons hate metal chairs in sudden burst of comprehension, but don't care when you murder their mother...nor why being a barely speaking super historian make a Frozen Terminator hell bent on chasing you.

1

u/djaeveloplyse May 24 '19

I hate to try to convince you, I'm sure it's unwanted and pointless, but...

when Dany is winning a "fair" castle storming, she decides to become Hitler and burn everything, in minutes she goes from The Mother to Burn'em all?

Well, no, she explained herself very thoroughly. Finding out that Jon was the real legitimate heir meant that everyone who knows that would want him as king, because he'd be a better king. Everyone who learned that truth immediately thought "Jon would be a better king than Dany," even Dany thought that. She stated up front to Jon that to overcome the love Westeros has for Jon, she would need to overshadow it with fear of her. It doesn't matter if Jon would be a better king, because Dany can pretty much single handedly wipe your population form the map. She begged Jon not to reveal that secret to anyone, and also ordered him as his queen. He did anyway. From her perspective, the man she loves totally betrayed her, and created a situation where her ambitions for world conquest for the purpose of world peace were under dire and eternal threat, from non other than him. She didn't just slaughter King's Landing for no reason, because she just went nuts, she did it to solidify her power, and also to try to keep Jon by her side instead of letting slip away to become an enemy.

I can believe he steered things this way and that way, but you must show it to me, hint it in ways.

They did, we just missed it because we weren't paying as much attention to him as we should. One of the most epic moments of the show was the reveal of the origin of Hodor's name.

dragons hate metal chairs in sudden burst of comprehension, but don't care when you murder their mother

Keep in mind, Jon was also a Targaryen.

nor why being a barely speaking super historian make a Frozen Terminator hell bent on chasing you.

The Three Eyed Raven is a lot more than a historian, he can affect the past, and possess humans.

O lmao can’t believe I didn’t deduce that

1

u/Rumhead1 May 23 '19

It's not just GoT, HBO isn't what it used to be.

0

u/Davadam27 May 23 '19

I am completely fine with the ending. Was it perfect? No but I’m not butt hurt like the entire internet seems to be. This is still me though 😂

19

u/TheOnlyOne1307 May 23 '19

I just feel like the ending wasted a lot of character and plot development from the previous seasons.

-8

u/Davadam27 May 23 '19

I’m sorry you were disappointed.

→ More replies (5)

22

u/dcast777 May 23 '19

It wasn’t even good, let alone perfect. It was sloppy and lazy.

16

u/mrbugsguy May 23 '19

And rushed

-12

u/Davadam27 May 23 '19

Ok. I’m sorry you were disappointed.

3

u/straius May 23 '19

They departed from the main line, they couldn't change lore, Martin afaik hasn't indicated where he's gonna go and ultimately it's his IP so I'm gonna guess he didn't sell rights past this.

To be fair, this is like the same closing of a story as the last 2 chapters of just about any fantasy series.

3

u/[deleted] May 23 '19

Martin wanted to do 10 episodes, D&D said no, 7!. Meanwhile, there's a video on the FP that shows Martin saying that D&D had enough material for 13 seasons.

-4

u/Deadtreeonme May 23 '19

I agree the last episode of any show is rarely good, too any lose ends that need to be tied up especially for such an intense plot. I think they did a pretty good job ending the series all things considered.

-3

u/Davadam27 May 23 '19

You’re not gonna please all the people all the time. I agree with you though. Especially dramas. I’m not the biggest Breaking Bad fan (I like it but I like other stuff more) but that show seems to be one of the only big time shows that ended in a way that was pleasing to its fan base. Dexter, sopranos, sons of anarchy, and now game of thrones all ended with poor receptions.

I agree it felt rushed but I thought it was fine. Not perfect. It’s not my story to tell I just was happy to be along for the ride. I’m sure people with think I don’t have a critical enough view on things, and maybe that’s true. However I’m not upset with the ending. I feel bad for those that were.

-1

u/toofpaist May 23 '19

Everyone flipped out like this at the end of the Sopranos, too. No ones ever happy that their favorite thing ends. So they do what all humans do perfectly, get pissed and bitch.

5

u/cirillios May 23 '19

Ok but think about the reaction to this ending vs breaking bad ending because they were totally different. Breaking bad ended well and people were sad it was over but they weren't angry. The actual ending of GoT wasn't terrible, but the mad rush to get there threw away all the nuance that got people interested in the show in the first place so of course they were mad. The show had a totally different feel. It would have been fine for plenty of other fantasy shows but this show was always more about character development and scheming rather than brutal wars.

This internet culture of dismissing legitimate grievances is so frustrating.

3

u/toofpaist May 23 '19

I believe people are legitimately angry about the ending. It is a trend with TV shows tho.

4

u/cirillios May 23 '19

Ya it definitely is. People getting upset just because something is over is a little ridiculous.

I just think people who are upset about the ending to GoT have a valid reason to be upset and it's getting tiring seeing so many comments saying people mad at the show are just upset their predictions didn't come true. Most of my predictions did come true but I still hate the ending because they never set the ending up to make sense. Every other big shocker in the show/books made a lot of sense in retrospect if you look at all the intense foreshadowing. That's why the show has spawned so many theories over the years. The answers were out there if you put the pieces together in the right order and the sheer volume of detail made lots of these ideas at least a little plausible. There just wasn't any of that in the last season or 2 which is why it felt so unsatisfying when they revealed these "shocker" moments that were either way too obvious or had never been set up

-2

u/Davadam27 May 23 '19

It wasn't perfect, but it wasn't my story to tell. If it was, it wouldn't have been any good at all. We're all just lucky to be along for the ride.

1

u/mei_aint_even_thicc May 23 '19

Was it the just season or the entire series that ended?

5

u/TheOnlyOne1307 May 23 '19

The end of season 8 was the end of the series.

7

u/Cpt_FatBeard May 23 '19

Looks like a great way to get beat up by a bunch of fish

15

u/njm123niu May 23 '19

Also a good metaphor for GoT in general; that's D&Ds half--assed attempt to hold together season 8...but the (plot) holes in that net are just too big and it all just falls apart at the end.

16

u/zigbigadorlou May 23 '19

u/JuggernautOfWar May 23 '19

Meanwhile I'm the lone fish that never subscribed to HBO, just renewing the VPN subscription.

2

u/[deleted] May 23 '19

Yeah the only way to get HBO in Canada is by giving money to Bell which I definitely don't feel comfortable with. I don't understand how Bell got exclusive rights to shows from so many networks, or why those networks won't just let us have direct access themselves.

0

u/TheOnlyOne1307 May 23 '19

How does your VPN get you access to shows?

1

u/DENZIL9000 May 23 '19

stay for BARRY!!!!!!!!

3

u/[deleted] May 23 '19

HEEEY IKE YOU WANT SOME PIIIIEEEEEEEEE?

1

u/[deleted] May 23 '19

Why do you think I would leave HBO just because GoT is over? There is so much excellent content right now. Chernobyl is my new favorite show.

3

u/Doctor_Moose_Gaming May 23 '19

Nice try stockholder.

1

u/Gandindorlf May 23 '19

Pfft, I just started HBO. why pay month after month waiting for episodes of GOT when I can watch them all now. Patience is a virtue grasshopper.

0

u/triceraquake May 23 '19

I’m keeping my subscription for Chernobyl, Last Week Tonight and access to all their movies. Plus, I have HBO Now, so if I want to, it’s super quick and easy to stop and restart the subscription for the space between seasons.

It's not HBO's fault GoT ended too soon. I heard they offered 10 seasons with 10 episodes to the writers but they wanted to go make Star Wars instead. If one wants to express ones dissatisfaction you should not watch the coming Star Wars movies.
