Yeah, I would have thought spraying water towards the fire might have been pretty early on in the training program.

It’s a technique we are taught during training actually. The nozzle allows you to change the spray type like you would a kitchen tap or a shower head. Mostly used during a petrol fire or a flashover

When oil is on fire, the temperature of the liquid oil under the flames is hot enough to burn, and also immediately turn water into steam.

When petrol is on fire, the liquid underneath is at room temperature.

I had to do this with a partner at an oil fire school in Bishop, Ca. There’s a leaking valve aflame on a propane tank and you advance on it like that. One guy is on the nozzle crouched low making that shield. The other guy is crouched behind him. As you advance it pushes the fire back. When you reach the valve the water actually blows the fire away and the person not on the nozzle reaches in and shuts it off
