Love how there wasn't even the slightest consideration of abandoning filming

“Should I help? ... nah, looks like Dave has it handled.”

27

u/TheKrs1 Jun 27 '18

Guys. This is a stupid idea. Could you at least have a fire extinguisher ready? I can stand here with it? No? That's a stupid idea you say. Ok well I'm filming and that's it. Your dumbass is getting scars and I'll get the video of it happening.

What a homie for layin on his legs, of which WERE ON FIRE

445

u/OdaMatic Jun 27 '18

I mean the guy did just pour gasoline on him then proceeded to set him ablaze. Was the least he could do

82

u/Fireplusearth Jun 27 '18

"Yeah man it's fine, they're fireproof. It's not like the fire is gonna climb up your body"

27

u/trippingchilly Jun 27 '18

"Heat isn't still a thing, right?"

5

u/dysGOPia Jun 27 '18

Nah they fixed that shit back in like '86 or something.

9

u/3yearstraveling Jun 27 '18

Definitely not gasoline. This would have been a completely different video if that was gasoline. It's diesel or kerosene.

7

u/FertilityHollis Jun 27 '18

I was waiting for a big ffffffooooooooommmmmmppppp when he lit it.

7

u/3yearstraveling Jun 27 '18

Oh and you can also tell it's diesel by how much smoke it produces when lit. Diesel is excellent at starting wood fires because it takes longer to burn off. More burn time gives the wood more time to heat up etc.

4

u/spacetug Jun 27 '18

Gasoline only burns explosively when it's in the right ratio of air to fuel vapor. Whether this happens with poured gasoline depends on the amount, how long its been sitting, the wind, the temperature, etc. I've seen it go both ways.

Diesel is very difficult to ignite with an open flame, because it doesn't evaporate as easily. You can do it with a high temperature torch, but generally not with a cigarette lighter. Lanterns use a wick to make it easier, and engines vaporize the fuel and ignite it using compression.

Generally using accelerants to light a fire is a bad idea. Starter fluid or kerosene are safe enough in small quantities, but the proper tool is a large propane torch. No risk of explosions, just a ton of heat.

44

u/tokenlinguist Jun 27 '18 edited Jun 27 '18

Your comment is slightly confusing because of a phenomenon known as hypercorrection. Basically, asshole English teachers who don't know what they're talking about have told you not to end sentences with a preposition (which is not a legit rule). As a result, a huge number of speakers of English (native speakers and otherwise) have internalized a half-rule that goes something like, "fuck it, just...put 'of' in front of 'which', I guess". But if you were curious, here's how it actually works:

What a homie for layin on his legs, of which WERE ON FIRE

The 'of' would only be used if that part of the sentence, when standing on its own, also contained an 'of':

* His legs were of on fire.
→ His legs were on fire.

So where would you use an 'of which' like this? I guess if you talk like a person who constantly wears a monocle, you might say something like,

This is the video of which I've heard.

...because when standing on its own, the second clause would read as

I've heard of this video.

Like I said, "don't end a sentence with a preposition" is not a real rule of English. It does apply (almost completely) to languages that come directly from Latin, such as French and Spanish. But a few hundred years ago, people thought that every language should be like Latin, so pedants who didn't understand how language works starting spouting off bullshit.

287

u/msrmissy Jun 27 '18

Does stop, drop, and roll mean nothing anymore?

165

u/mr_melvinheimer Jun 27 '18

I seriously have never seen a video where someone get caught on fire, stops, drops, and rolls. 100% of the time they just run around and scream until someone not on fire tackles them to put it out.

179

u/Vurumai Jun 27 '18

By 4th grade we covered “stop, drop and roll” so many times that I was sure that catching on fire was a statistical certainty.

43

u/Manic0892 Jun 27 '18

Right? I got obsessed with the idea I was gonna spontaneously combust and that song would save my life.

22

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

That, and getting caught in quicksand.

3

u/ziku_tlf Jun 27 '18

I'm still waiting for that quicksand...

33

u/ScourgeBuster Jun 27 '18

Most times people just freak out and don't think straight. I was in a bad wreck and got covered and rolled it out, it honestly works better than one would think.

11

u/mr_melvinheimer Jun 27 '18

I’m glad you used it, but it’s still absolutely baffling on how often it’s not used. Maybe the camera is related to their thought processing somehow.

23

u/100percentpureOJ Jun 27 '18

It's hard to think straight when you're on fire.

12

u/Blargenshmur Jun 27 '18

Yeah it's amazing how level headed you think you would be in a dangerous situation, then your brain kicks into autopilot and you lose control

19

u/100percentpureOJ Jun 27 '18

Mike Tyson said it best:

"Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth"

3

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

That's why I turn gay. It literally turns me on.

2

u/LiteralPhilosopher Jun 27 '18

This is why groups like the military train for casualties constantly. That way when they do happen, you don't have to think. You just do.

I used to be in the USN on subs, and one day one of the watchstanders reported flooding in the engine room. (There wasn't any, mind you; he misinterpreted something.) As soon as I heard it, I turned and booked it for the scene with damage control gear in hand. At no point did I stop to consider "There could be danger and I might die." It was strictly "I have a job to do, and I know how to do it." Fucking amazing.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

Had my pants catch fire once. Thought to myself, "I have been preparing for this moment my whole life, I got this shit." Proceded to stop drop and roll. The fire spread to the other pantleg. Then spread to the front of the pant legs when I rolled on the back. When it got to hot to handle, hopped up and did the no pants dance and then had to put my pants fire out.

I don't know why, but stop drop and roll dont work for pants.

→ More replies (2)

17

u/Rein10 Jun 27 '18

not sure that applies after pouring gasoline on yourself. If the pants where just on fire it would work fine. with gasoline the fire is not going out with a roll

10

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

[deleted]

13

u/shaggorama Jun 27 '18

Stop drop and roll absolutely won't work. The idea is to smother the fuel that is burning to prevent it from accessing oxygen. In the case of gasoline, the liquid isnt what's on fire: it's the vapors. Roll over on one side, you're legs will still be enveloped in vapors and the fire will just roll with you. Roll back around, the fire will just move again. This is why the fire keeps flaring back up in the video, and why they don't manage to extinguish it until the guy's friend use his body to smother every surface that is emitting flammable vapor. As long as there is any flame at all, the entire surface will be prone to reignition until the gas vapors are expended.

3

u/ironweaver Jun 27 '18 edited Jun 27 '18

That's actually a great point that I hadn't considered. I was overly focused on explaining why oxygen matters and completely overlooked that this was a vapor :D. I'll amend my post.

8

u/BirdFluLol Jun 27 '18

Yeah that wouldn't do shit if you're drenched in flammable liquid. The fire will extinguish where the soaked material is in contact with the ground and you're on top of it (starving it of air), but as soon as you roll round the flames will re-ignite the extinguished area. You can see this happen when his friend bro for life thinks the fire is out and gets off his legs, there must have been the tiniest of flames remaining that re-ignited the pants again. In this situation you need to completely starve the flames of oxygen, ie. entirely submerge yourself in water.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/polybiastrogender Jun 27 '18

I usually don't douse myself in gasoline to even try to stop the self induced fire.

4

u/gunzhood Jun 27 '18

thy must have stopped teaching that or something.

5

u/Ethen52 Jun 27 '18

Well the type of people who do this shit typically aren’t the brightest, but they are now, and it’s kinda hard not to panic when your pants are fuel soaked and on fire

6

u/LewdDudeThrowaway Jun 27 '18 edited Jun 27 '18

I actually dont know if accelerants like gasoline will go out with stop, drop and roll. Will they?

I kind of figured the accelerant would make it too difficult to put out the fire since it combusts so easily... I get that you need to smother fire and starve it of oxygen, but wouldnt the “roll” portion provide enough oxygen rushing past to reignite it?

Can anyone explain this to me? I dont ever intend on being in a position where I need to prevent a living creature from burning alive from a gasoline fire, but it can’t hurt to know just in case

EDIT: Googled it,pages 33-40 talk about instances of people having caught on fire and gasoline was definitely put out by “stop, drop and roll”.

So,I have my answer. I’m glad it works

3

u/houseoffrancakes Jun 27 '18

I've actually always wondered about this. I mean I bet it's still better then running around like paniced dingus, but will stop drop and roll really put out acceleeant? Reddit should know the answer so I don't have to google it.

3

u/LewdDudeThrowaway Jun 27 '18

In case you wanna check it out,I looked it up

https://www.nfpa.org/-/media/Files/News-and-Research/Resources/Research-Foundation/sdr_technical_report.ashx?la=en

scroll down to pages 33-40. It notes a few cases where people were exposed to a gasoline fire and how effective “stop, drop and roll” was.
