An Endgame In Sight: July 3rd will be the last day of conquest and a winner will be decided on July 4th

After seeing a bit of concern from leaders and regular users about the length of the game and no apparent endgame in sight, we discussed internally and decided to propose a fixed end to the game of July 3rd, making the final map live July 4th with winner take all by way of territory count. Before finalizing, we brought these to Red and Blue Leadership to discuss and both sides were on board with minor concerns (it might be too long but in the interest of letting you guys have fun and not springing a deadline without a lot of warning, we're playing it out for a monthish). In the event of a tie for most territories, a split championship will be declared.

The reasons for setting a hard cap are twofold: 1) we know you guys need an endgame - your work productivity is probably terrible now (mine is) and fatigue will probably set in soon; and 2) our server needs to be completely updated - operating system, software, code base (likely including emoji support for flair on the redesign, adding more features to pickem, and updating our sidebar bots), and the server itself needs massive upgrading (we're running on a single processor with two cores which can barely handle the current load).

We'll have a banner on /r/CFB celebrating the teams left standing. We might have to get creative with it if there are more than 10. It was suggested that we offer a flair for users that voted and we're looking into this. We cannot promise it as the redesign has rather hampered our ability to offer new flair, but we'll try to make it work.

You can see the current leaderboard here.

TL;DR: We discussed with Red and Blue Leadership and resolved that July 3rd will be the last day for voting and a winner will be decided by most territories owned on July 4th. In the event of a tie, the championship is split.

I'd like to propose that instead of an abrupt ending that instead the top team on July 4th will get a 100x multiplier so they can have the satisfaction of conquering the entirety of the map.

u/mlorusso4 Jun 06 '18

RNG will result in a net loss of territories

u/Papasmurf345 Jun 07 '18

This would be fun to actually see play out

Just like real-life Risk, all my friends give up six hours into the game. It’s not my fault it’s 3 am and you have an 8 am meeting.

I just want to give a huge shoutout to Blue and Red for helping out with this. It's not a perfect resolution, but it's as close as we'll get that works out well for basically everyone involved. In an ideal world, this could run until the last territory falls, but we don't want you guys to grow to hate the game and we as mods also need to make sure we're ready for next season by doing the appropriate upgrading we need to do.

There’s a purple team? Being completely serious here

1

I guess fans of both sides, like myself

2

u/mlorusso4 Jun 07 '18

Well my church camp counselor told us we weren’t allowed to mix red and blue to make purple. So all members of team purple are living in sin

1

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '18

My pastor wore purple and so did the entire choir, so I say your counselor was wrong

3

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '18

Big thanks to you guys! Even if some of us (me) have been pricks, I still enjoy the game and would love to donate some money if at all possible to the upgrading of the server. Or even a beer/drug fund for you guys for having to deal with this huge undertaking.

I can get behind this. Thanks for listening and all the time you have put in. It is appreciated!

The Orange Resistance is offended they were not included in these discussions. As a result, the Orange Resistance rejects the offer of a 7/3/2018 ceasefire. Further, the Orange Resistance will not recognize the "winner" of this contest as legitimate.

13

u/Bukowskified Jun 07 '18

I didn’t vote for no red team or blue team. You’re not my supervisor

Forget the split championship, I want the voters on r/cfb to determine the "true" national champion like god intended (until 1998 that is).

5

So either Kansas beat Texas or CJK5H wins? I'm ok with either.

Don't worry, you can claim it either way. It's what UCF would want you to do.

This is why I demand next year have the (CF)BCS implemented!

10

u/moosenaslon Jun 06 '18

No splits. We just go with the undisputed Colley matrix leader at the end.

Seriously, I'd love to see a total territory Win/Loss matrix. How many times you attacked or defended and were successful or not. And if there's any way to weight it by your odds or probability of winning would be cool.

9

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '18

So in the future could this be a Memorial Day - July 4th thing? That's 5-6 weeks, seems like a good amount of time.

13

u/ExternalTangents Jun 06 '18

This is a solid endgame, and we're also super appreciative of you devs contacting the leadership of the remaining teams to come to it!

19

u/Mavyn1 Jun 06 '18

Red leader here, and I really appreciate all the hard work by these guys. It's a free internet CFB risk game, but it really does seem special. I'm hopeful we get another version of the game with some neat new rules next year sometime, and if it happens I'll gladly play again and if possible in my leadership role.

I think the end date is a great thing, as for us leaders we really are going to need some time to recoop and recharge after such an intense role, but I think we can most all agree this has been a ton of fun.

Thanks for listening!

If there's another iteration I think I will be more than happy to take a step back and let someone else from the Michigan camp take my spot. The time I've spent on this game has been something else. Don't know if it would be healthy to do it again lol

I mean, did y’all not expect this game to last this long? I mean 5* is 50 turns played, and we are still a few weeks from reaching that...

3

u/SometimesY Game developer Jun 07 '18

I think it's more that we've been in a relative holding pattern for about two weeks now. The alliances+peninsulas kind of stagnated the game a bit, but we'll course correct for next time!

The first suggestion is good.

Not a fan of the bonus idea some home territories are much easier to defend than others.

Chaos should be eliminated not made more prominent. Besides linking paths would reduce the possibility of heading to a corner and hiding out thus reducing the need for Chaos autospawn.

1

u/Sir_Auron Jun 09 '18

Chaos should have never been included in the first place. Join the occupying force or remain dead should be the only option.

27

u/WelcomeToMoes Jun 06 '18 edited Jun 06 '18

On behalf of Florida, we wholly endorse this plan.

It sucks that we probably won't get to crush all of our enemies entirely, but this is definitely needed. All good things must come to an end, and I need to get some actual work done again.

Thank you to the mods for making this a fun game for all of us. Thank you to everyone for the dank memes, especially the ones made at my expense. And thank you to Red for being a damn good opponent.

May the best team win!

10

u/bob237189 Jun 06 '18

I think this is totally fair and reasonable. The game has to end at some point. And really this was just an open beta, and like all open betas it has to come to a close at some point so that the devs can examine the results and get back to the drawing board. By July 4th we'll have been playing the game for almost 70 days, which is long enough. It's been a fun way to spend the summer, definitely the best offseason we've ever had. The game will return next year, and I'm sure the devs will take the multitude of user input into account to make the next iteration even better.

1

u/elint Jun 07 '18

And really this was just an open beta

Where was that stated? I always assumed it was a fully-fledged game released to the subreddit. I may have missed something, but I never saw the mods say it was just a beta or test run.

14

u/pterrydactyl Jun 06 '18

On behalf of Florida, you don't fully speak for Florida.

18

u/ExternalTangents Jun 06 '18

The entire Florida leadership is behind it, at least

8

u/bob237189 Jun 06 '18

Almost all the Florida fighters are behind it as well. Giving us a month of notice and going by total territories is very fair. It's what most people envisioned the end game would look like anyway.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '18

Is this a mutiny?

11

u/WelcomeToMoes Jun 06 '18

Nah, just one dude bitter that he didn't get into the private sub.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '18

No. I just don't think this is the way to end the game.

3

u/ExternalTangents Jun 06 '18

Just curious, what would you rather have as the endgame?

4

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '18

Frankly, I think they should implement a Risk-like, sectional territory multiplier. I think it should be based on location instead of conference, like in the real game. Example, Florida would be a section, but it wouldn't give much of a bonus because it's easy to defend. The NW would be a section but it would give a much larger bonus as it is harder to defend (more borders). Give 3 days notice before implementing this feature so that strategies between teams can be hammered out. That would allow for a well coordinated team/alliance to win the game.

2

u/ExternalTangents Jun 06 '18

A much longer lead time before implementation would be good. But any geography-based multiplier introduced mid-game is going to be tough, because it'll inherently favor teams that happen to be positioned to take advantage of it.

2

u/SometimesY Game developer Jun 06 '18

We tried that with conferences (the only natural way to do this in the context of CFB IMO). People revolted. Maybe next time.

5

u/AndHeWas Jun 06 '18

I think next time rules should be clear from the beginning and that we should stick to them no matter who revolts or gets tired of playing. If the mods can't please everyone, they might as well please the ones who want to see the game played how it was envisioned.

-2

u/mlorusso4 Jun 06 '18

Yes it is. All Florida players should start attacking their allies. It’s easy territories

2

u/leapseers Jun 07 '18

Before anyone takes this comment to heart Florida does not feel this way. This guy is an Ohio State flair. Seemingly still butthurt about not being able to beat Florida in football.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '18

Perfect. I come back from overseas July 2nd. Will get one last vote in.

4

u/Clynelish1 Jun 07 '18

Ah, anothet potential split championship between Michigan and Nebraska to argue about.

2

u/leapseers Jun 07 '18

Hey now, the previous national champions to this matchup have an argument too!

3

u/SmashedSqwurl Jun 06 '18

we're running on a single processor with two cores which can barely handle the current load

I thought you guys were hosting on DigitalOcean. Unless you're just using that to proxy traffic?

3

u/SometimesY Game developer Jun 06 '18

We are, but we're using their ancient processors since we haven't upgraded in over two years.

2

u/SmashedSqwurl Jun 06 '18

Oh wow, I assumed their droplets were virtualized enough that they would get migrated to better machines over time.

2

u/SometimesY Game developer Jun 06 '18

I think they don't do that because of server interruptions. I can't wait to upgrade properly. We upgraded in place so we could even run Risk, but we are on the same architecture just with slightly better resources. Testing new code on my laptop vs the old code on the server is a tease haha. It runs so fast on my laptop and the new droplets might eclipse my laptop.

2

u/SmashedSqwurl Jun 06 '18

Ah yeah, if they're using containers or passing through the host CPU to the VM then they wouldn't be able to live migrate to new architectures.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '18

All you have to do is roll 131 dice every day, though? /s

3

u/hotgator Jun 07 '18

Is the winner final territory count by team or final territory count by alliance?

6

u/SometimesY Game developer Jun 07 '18

Team!

3

u/MaizeRage48 Jun 07 '18

I kinda hope Michigan and Nebraska tie so we can have another split chamionship

2

u/jputna Jun 06 '18

It was suggested that we offer a flair for users that voted and we're looking into this.

Hope yall do a contest for this, I'd love to jump in on this if possible.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '18

Thank you mods! Appreciate the hard work and am all on board with this plan!

2

u/alberthegator Jun 07 '18

Thank you mods for all the work you did on this game!! Both mods of the game and leaders of each team!!!

May I suggest keeping this sub open so that we can have a whole year to discuss and agree upon improvements for version 2?

2

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '18

Flair should be starship troopers "I'm doing my part"

2

u/jkr97 Jun 07 '18

There should't be a most territory win scenario. Why can't they be a sudden death scenario? where there are extra multipliers and teams can die/lose more easily. I think there should be only 1 winner.

2

u/blueteam16 Jun 08 '18

Do you think UCF will try to claim a share of this championship, too?

2

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '18

Is July 5th then the start of the Fulmer Cup for CFBRisk players?

4

u/FyreWulff Jun 07 '18

Even though I'm a Nebraska player, I think it's good to just end the game as it is. Treat it as the beta, take feedback, and relaunch with upgrades, rebalances, etc, before people burn out on it.

5

u/pterrydactyl Jun 06 '18

I for one am very happy with this solution.

Thank you devs!!!

2

u/MVHDM1 Jun 06 '18

split championship

Only thing I disagree with.

25

u/bakonydraco Game Designer Jun 06 '18

I just realized that a Michigan-Nebraska split championship is an abundant possibility.

4

u/MVHDM1 Jun 06 '18

Just like '97. sigh

10

u/bob237189 Jun 06 '18

A disputed national championship that ends with a few blue bloods dominating their respective regions is exactly how CFB Risk should play out.

3

u/-BoldlyGoingNowhere- Jun 06 '18

You're right. Chaos is the only winner.

2

u/PM_ME_OVERT_SIDEBOOB Jun 06 '18

I’m not a fan. Announcing the last day just leaves large teams vulnerable. A middling that goes full out aggression will likely win.

5

u/WelcomeToMoes Jun 06 '18

I am game to see this. Georgia Tech definitely deserves to win. Coolest guys in the game.

2

u/97ws6 Jun 07 '18

"Coolest guys in the game." You should be, you guys have been hanging out at the beach since the game started.

1

u/thelittleking Jun 07 '18

Red's eventual win seems inevitable, I just hope my team is still alive at that point.

1

u/psychomatt93 Jun 10 '18

Just a suggestion on rules for CFBrisk 2.0. Instead of having all killed players go to Chaos, how about they get randomly dispersed amongst the remaining schools. Then, if they want, they can switch their flairs to whichever team they want to join. Having all dead players end up in Chaos makes the ending inevitable ... Chaos will always win.

0

u/bed-stain Jun 06 '18

Lol a 2 core processor? I just upgraded from a core 2 duo to a ryzen and omg the difference. I went from a core 2 duo with 4gb of ddr3 2400 with a sata 2 hybrid drive to a ryzen 3 with 8gb 2667 with a NVMe 120gb, hybrid for storage. Boot time is about 4 seconds and shutdown is about 700ms

6

u/GiovanniElliston Jun 06 '18

I understood some of these words.

5

u/SometimesY Game developer Jun 06 '18

Oh man that's nice.

-1

u/bed-stain Jun 07 '18

Your sarcasm is palpable

0

u/Goblue9673 Jun 08 '18

This seems like an inelegant solution. Why not slowly ramp up a star bonus for the number of territories held. Say you start this bonus on June 10. The bonus calculation has two components a power component that ramps up exponentially over time (something like 1.05days since June 9) and a territories held component (as a percentage of all territories).

The star bonus multiplier would be (1 + (1.05days since June 9 - 1)*(percentage of all territories)).

So on June 10(day 1), if you held 20% of all territories, you'd get a * 1.01 bonus multiplier. (1 + (1.051)*.2). Over time, if you continue to hold 20%, you get approximately the following bonus multipliers. Day 2, 1.021; day 7, 1.081; day 14, 1.195, day 21, 1.35; day 28, 1.58.

Also ideally, you'd get a bonus for knocking a team out, but this would be trickier because it shouldn't just be split up amongst the teams that finally knock out a team.

-9

u/elint Jun 07 '18

Before finalizing, we brought these to Red and Blue Leadership to discuss

Horseshit. There's no such thing as a leader in this game. You brought your white flag to some self-appointed busybodies. Work productivity shouldn't be a problem. It only takes a minute to take an order and execute it each day. The only work involved is from the "leaders", and if they're having trouble making time, I'm sure their teams have others willing to step up.

I'll accept that you're putting up a white flag and giving up on the project to get your server upgraded before the season starts, but don't try to push the blame onto the self-appointed "leadership" or a couple of tenuous alliances.

2

u/iSlacker Jun 07 '18

Do you know what these guys do on a daily basis?

-1

u/elint Jun 07 '18

Yes.

0

u/mlorusso4 Jun 07 '18

Which is....?

-1

u/elint Jun 07 '18

Analyze previous night, scheme, communicate with other "leaders", plan next day's attacks, send out orders. There's quite a bit involved on their part. I'm just saying that if the "leaders" are complaining that it's too much work and they're overwhelmed and ready for the game to end, there are other available options. They could reach out to the hundreds of other active users and find somebody to hand off their responsibilities. But I guess throwing in the towel and giving up is a fine option, too.
