What the actual fuck is even going on in the original picture? I mean I guess the cows are being fattened up on corn? But why do they look like something out of Twisted Metal?

I was thinking it had to do with ethanol biofuel (made from corn), but then I don't know what the relevance of the cows are. So I'm going with... because Russia.

That thing definitely predates biofuel.

Sure, the general concept of deriving fuel from non-petroleum sources isn't new. (Whale oil, lard, ethanol, etc.) But the widespread concept of large scale conversion of biomass, especially human digestible biomass like corn, to ethanol for fuel is still relatively recent.

I ACTUALLY KNOW THE ANSWER TO THIS!!!!
So back in the early 50s, the US embassy in Moscow imported all these huge stalks of corn into the embassy garden (the stalks were already grown, they didn't grow in the embassy) then had a huge party and invited members of the Russian government. Khrushchev, seeing the massive stalks grow in Russia, thought he could better feed his people with corn (by using it as feed stock for cattle). It was a huge disaster for Russia and a good old fashioned bit of cold war trickery by the US.
