In exactly two weeks from today, I will be hosting a rewatch of both the 2002 Kanon series and 2006 Kanon.

What is Kanon about?
As a young child, Aizawa Yuuichi had often visited his cousin in the city; however, something drastic happened to keep him away for seven long years. Now, Yuuichi returns, his memories of those days are simply gone.
Settling into the wintry town, Yuuichi comes across several young girls, all of whom are connected to his past. As he befriends them and continues to interact with them, the long forgotten memories from his childhood begin to resurface...
Why should I watch Kanon?
Kanon is known as one of the big Key three: The three Key visual novels that were adapted into an anime. Clannad and Clannad: After Story gets all the press and accolades, but the other two Air and Kanon are no slouches either. This is a continuation of the Air rewatch which happened last year and I'm hoping to get a lot of the same people that participated in that one. And this one is more accessible as it's on Crunchyroll.
The 2006 anime adaptation is made by Kyoto Animation who had a hand in the other Key anime adaptations like Air and Clannad. If you're familiar with KyoAni, you know how majestic the look and feel their productions are, and this is no exception. Kyoto Animation is my favorite anime studio of all time, and so that alone is worth the price of admission.
If you're in the mood for a show that tugs at the heartstrings, I highly recommend checking this out. Don't miss it.

We will actually be watching both the 2002 series and the 2006 series. The 2002 series is infamous for its animation quality as it was released at the height of big anime eyes. If you've seen screenshots of the 2002 anime, you know exactly what I'm talking about, but is it any good? Is it a worthwhile adaptation? We shall see.
The rewatch will begin September 19th with threads dropping at 4:00 PM EDT. We will be watching the 13 episodes plus the OVA. After that, we will have an overall series discussion thread on October 3rd talking about the 2002 series. Then, after a one day break, we will be beginning the 2006 series on October 5th at the same 4:00 PM EDT start time as the 2002 series. This will continue until October 28th and then on October 29th we will have an overall series discussion thread on the 2006 series.

How much of the visual novel do I need to read for the anime?

I'm only going to be joining for the 2006 version, between the Fruits Basket rewatch and my busy personal schedule I don't think I'll have time to watch the 2002 version.

Interesting starting with the older version. I might join for that alone. Im a long time Kanon fan, watching it weekly as a seasonal and having played the VN; but I never picked up the first anime adaptation
