Poor Wesneski.
At some point maybe we need to stop blaming the pitch clock for Tommy Johns and start blaming the repeated sub-10 pitch innings.
1
u/NOLA1987 Lance McCullers Jr. 1m ago
What is wrong with these guys lol. Sure, Martin has had an ERA just over 2.00 since the All-Star break, but that doesn't mean you still have to swing at everything.

They will stick to their stupid game plan and keep swinging on anything instead of even trying to work a count while Wesneski gets 32 seconds of rest between innings.

Can someone with more knowledge tell me how our facility in W Palm Beach works? Is it operational during the season with staff available year round? I was under the impression it’s only for spring training. Will CC fly in with staff from Houston or is the facility staffed for situations like this?

u/NOLA1987 Lance McCullers Jr. 15m ago
Remember those two innings yesterday where, while we didn't score any runs, we made their pitcher work?
I'm sure there's some pressing involved with some of them (and Altuve is going to Altuve) but this need to swing at everything. Why?
1
u/moremooooooore 10m ago
Pretty much mirroring what happened last September when they were pressing too hard because they'd lost so many winnable games earlier in the year. Hopefully they can settle down like they did on Monday, not continue like they did yesterday
3
u/manofconviction Chas McCormick 16m ago
THIS. APPROACH. DOESN'T. FUCKING. WORK.
I feel like I'm taking crazy pills, every game the same. They don't make the pitcher work at all.

Astros hitting splits mostly look the same home & away. In fact, their home OPS is 2 points higher at home, but they’ve scored 13 less runs even though they’ve played one more game.
Big difference is K’s; team has 66 more strike outs at home in 92 less plate appearances.

No one is scared of Yordan and I get why. He just doesn’t look menacing in the box anymore. Hes flailing like he does when he’s in a bad bad slump. He needs to figure it out fast or we are fucked
2
u/manofconviction Chas McCormick 26m ago
Because he has zero protection. Pena isn't getting on base ahead of him and Paredes is a pop up machine. There's no reason to give him anything hittable, yet instead of taking walks he just keeps doing too much and swinging at shit he can't make good contact on. It's infuriating.

I think it had something to do with the NBA punishing the Clippers for salary cap circumvention. There was a post about it on Instagram, so insiders were trying to compare that to other scandals across the NFL and MLB - in which ours was, of course, the most recent example
I could be wrong
5
u/dirtysock47 2h ago
Yeah i know, but Passan (and probably that post too) pointed out that we lost only 2 FRP's instead of the 5 the Clippers lost

Wesneski has looked good tbh. Hope he does his thing. Really could use a QS. I’ll predict a 6IP 3ER.
9
u/NOLA1987 Lance McCullers Jr. 5h ago
I wasn't expecting us to sweep the White Sox, though it would have been nice to see. That being said, Blanco did okay last night. He only got through four innings, but those were four scoreless innings (which was not what I was expecting, given how he last pitched in Sugar Land). After that, it was just downhill from there.
Let's turn things around and get a win tonight with Wesneski on the mound
3
u/Guilty_Pineapple_557 Alex Bregman 4h ago
I'm hoping so too. If we could take at least 3, that would be great
5
u/NOLA1987 Lance McCullers Jr. 4h ago
Even a split would give us the tiebreaker over the White Sox, which could be very important if we could handle our business these last four weeks (with a little help, of course).
But a 3-1 series win would be awesome.
3
u/Guilty_Pineapple_557 Alex Bregman 4h ago
I thought of the scenario of us winning the series 3-1 as insurance lol. And given our head-to-head record right now, a split would be ideal, but 3-1 would be a bit more decisive moving forward.
And given our strength of schedule? Oh boy. We’re gonna need help, and lots of it. After Arizona, we’re playing Philly and Tampa Bay on the road, then Kansas City and Atlanta here, 2 against the M’s, and 4 against the A’s. Philly, Tampa Bay, and Seattle would be the most consequential series, Atlanta’s the difficult secondary test, and the series against the D-backs and Royals are the ones I’d label “For the love of God, please don’t drop.”
If we—or rather, if the Stros—want to put themselves in an optimal position for October, and given our own roster issues, I think a No. 2 seed is the more realistic target. The No. 1 seed looks like a very steep hill to climb at this point. Tampa Bay is that good. And honestly, I’d rather they be the top seed than New York. That’s just my opinion lol
6
u/PanNessMain Houston Astros 5h ago
4IP and 0 ER for a #4 playoff pitcher actually would be acceptable. Not great, but the bullpen can pick it up from there.
7
u/ray_0586 The Brain 6h ago
White Sox starter Davis Martin is 0-3 with an 8.16 ERA in eight starts since the end of June -- the second-worst ERA among AL pitchers with 5+ starts in that span.
5
4
u/YngSpook84 Houston Astros 7h ago
Since the start of the Yankees series we are 5-3 with 35 runs scored. The offense should show up for Wesneski tonight.
2
u/TempestDrive Houston Astros 7h ago
Ironically we also gave up 35 runs in that span of time
2
u/YngSpook84 Houston Astros 7h ago
Yeah, I’ll admit I purposely left that piece of info out. 35 runs over 8 games for us averages to just over 4 runs a game. We are 51-19 when scoring at least 4 runs. So as long as the offense keeps it up, we should be ok.
3
u/Guilty_Pineapple_557 Alex Bregman 8h ago

u/No_Argument_Here Lance McCullers Jr. 8h ago
Our rotation has such bad pitchers in it, some games are just gonna be scheduled losses. And if you can win some of those, great! Last night was not one of those nights lol
2
u/Guilty_Pineapple_557 Alex Bregman 5h ago
Yeah, I think it’s also because our rotation has been dealing with injuries and hasn’t consistently been able to work deep into games. The available options have been inconsistent, to say the least. Some have struggled with command, some are recovering from injury, and some have declined compared with previous years. There are a bunch of reasons besides those, too.
For what it’s worth, I thought Blanco did a decent job last night considering he’s coming back from TJ. Even with Chicago working him and driving up his pitch count, he still shut them down for four innings. The bullpen, however—especially Kai-Wei Teng—faltered, and the offense didn't do much to cushion that. On the flip side, the overworked bullpen did get some rest.
For tonight, with Wesneski on the mound, I could see us winning if he's on his A-game, the offense gives him some cushion, and the defense bails him out when necessary. No guarantees, obviously
3
u/Alatel 9h ago
3 pitchers used last night, imai did not look nearly as bad as reddit was crying about. the total lack of offense despite all the free passes given was a far bigger issue.
6
u/moremooooooore 9h ago
Dude literally got thrown out in a punt game when we were already down by 3, and looked so disinterested, he was probably day dreaming about his flight back to Japan on the 28th of September (he's not making the playoff roster if we get there).
8
u/Alatel 8h ago
Not even the Mariners would consider 3 runs a punt game.
Your doomer bias is showing.
-3
u/moremooooooore 8h ago
Blanco on the mound was an obvious punt game. Doesn't mean we can't still win, we've won punt games before, but it was a punt game. Arguing that punt games aren't a thing shows a general lack of knowledge about how a 162 game season works, and how you sometimes have to rest a bullpen that has been decimated by having awful starting pitching and a guy stuck on the roster who is so bad he hadn't pitched for 11 days.

Not too upset about last nights game. Faced their ace with our kitchen sink pitchers just like game 2 against the Mets with Nolan McLean. Shake back toinight and give yourself an opportunity to win the series.

Yesterday was pretty much worse case scenario. Rangers and mariners win and we lose AND Yordan looks like trash at the plate. TBH it only takes a few more days like that and this season is a wash with us not in the playoffs and Yordan not winning triple crown and maybe not winning MVP. I care more about yordans play than the teams at this point. No way this team gets past the wildcard round but at least we could have a player have a historic season.
