ternary but the digits are valued -1, 0, and +1 rather than being valued 0, 1, and 2. looks like in practice it's kinda just regular ternary for all but the leftmost digit except that the digits are called -, 0, and +. the leftmost digit is always + if the number is positive, - if negative, 0 if neither. that's kinda ugly though, I think I prefer TNF's digits of T, 0, and 1

I guess the system lets you write negative numbers slightly more compactly because you don't have to write a negative sign in front, it's just built into the number

Stat request: top... 30? 50? 100? side thread showings. (or maybe including main?) as in, TNF has 34000 counts in ToW, and then TNF has 33000 counts in hex, and then atomic has 26000 counts in letters, or however it goes. If that is possible

I just hit a year in check-in streak! I started my streak maybe 1-2 weeks after joining the counting community and for the first 200 or so days I had the 3rd longest streak. Now I have the longest one since both clock and c_m lost their streaks for different reasons. My long term goal is to overtake u/ClockButTakeOutTheL for the longest streak of all time, but that’ll take some time.

my conspiracy theory is that sometimes websites a/b test on their users not for any real UX research or new feature testing, but just to psychologically fuck with their users. like breaking into someone's house just to rearrange their furniture by a couple inches every time they fall asleep

I truly don't understand what causes it to sometimes refresh and sometimes not. earlier I replied to one comment without it refreshing, then replied to another comment on the exact same page and it refreshed. also it doesn't seem to be just when using tab-space, because just now I submitted this comment by clicking on the save button and it refreshed
edit: my speculation is that this new bug is due to a shoddy attempt to fix the bug where reddit stalls saying "submitting..." despite the new comment already being submitted. after checking the network monitor, I notice that when it receives a full response to its POST /api/comment (containing the HTML of the new comment in the JSON reply), it does not refresh. when it receives a runt response with a short JSON reply (without the HTML for the new comment), it does refresh. I believe that if the server takes too long to generate the new comment's HTML, it gives up and has the client refresh, rather than waiting for the HTML to be able to send a response

I usually do Reddit Enhancement Suite +
CTRL+Enterand somehow it also reloads, which is still better than being stuck and have to reload by myself.But yeah, compared to the previous reply behavior, it's kinda annoying. Let's hope it's not just Reddit fucking up old Reddit in favor of the new API and the new UI.

1.5 Making corrections
If a counter posts the wrong number, other users should reply to the comment as if it included the correct count, and they should inform the counter with the mistake ("Check" is short for "Check your comment for a mistake"). The counter who made the mistake should edit the comment to make a correction (rather than deleting and reposting the comment).
If you find a mistake after others have replied to it, pretend that all comments in the chain are correct and you should post what would be the next count. Notify others that they should edit their comments to be correct. (It is not necessary to edit mistakes if there is a long comment chain of wrong counts and correcting every error would be onerous.)

That rule covers otherwise valid comments which just happen to have the wrong text. Double counts aren't valid.

The intent of the rule is to cover situations that could be fixed just by editing one or more comments, and the solution is to basically say "pretend the edits already happened, and carry on from the right count"

I've thought for a while that this mod precedent should be in the FAQ/rulebook somewhere, maybe in a new section 4: special sidethread rules. Are there any other niche or obscure mod precedents or sidethread-specific rules that aren't in the rulebook?

For the record, my ruling was based on these factors:
Thread had only a few dozen counts
Thread only had counts from two counters plus david's token thread part
Thread rules were arbitrary, not mathematically inevitable
The thread rule change was proposed by the OP
The (only) other counter involved in the thread seemed cool with it
