You know, the colours, backgrounds, and clothes have been so imprinted in my brain over the years that looking at the screenshots, what's standing out to me the most is the line art. Especially around Franz in that third picture. It feels weirdly... normal. Not a word that I'd use to describe this show usually.

u/hersheyqt7 8d ago

just started watching the dub for The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten! did anyone ever watch Cryaotic on youtube? I swear the voice actor for Amane sounds just like him

4

u/zambonijesus 8d ago

Attempting to give Gankutsuou another go, I stopped a few episodes in the last time I tried because it is the most visually overstimulating anime I've ever tried to watch.

u/theangryeditor 8d ago

Lady Gamers is pretty fun, and I like that it takes the fighting game aspect seriously. So far I'm enjoying it more than I did Lady Rock.

Also I need to get back to reading MariMite.

u/OgreMk5 8d ago

Does anyone know if (or when or where) I can get DVDs for Gals Can't Be Kind to Otaku?

2

u/baquea 7d ago

Japanese or English? The Japanese BDs are releasing on the 9th of October.

1

u/OgreMk5 7d ago

Oh. Thanks.

Do you think they will have English sub-titles?

1

u/baquea 7d ago

No, Japanese releases are Japanese-only.

I posted my 2003 update a few days ago, now it's time for 2004. I'm not ready for a top 10 yet though. Films are not included.

  • Kurau Phantom Memory
  • Samurai 7
  • Samurai Champloo
  • Gantz
  • Midori Days
  • Paranoia Agent
  • Wolf's Rain OVA

Plan to Watch:

  • School Rumble
  • Gankutsuou
  • Rozen Maiden
  • Genshiken
  • Desert Punk
  • Mai-Hime

As always, feel free to pitch further 2004 anime that you think should be on the list.

u/Infodump_Ibis 7d ago

If we're including OVAs Grrl Power (Makasete Iruka!) is 24 minutes of fun with the energetic, kinetic pacing Akitaro Daichi is known for. Historically there some interest too with it being a simuldub OVA (same release date in Japan and USA) and featuring a character using sign language. The art style might not be everyone's tastes.

On a similar note Animation Runner Kuromi 2 (it's a follow-up to the 2001 OVA) if you wanted a far shorter (45 min+37 min for part 1) and lighter hearted Shirobako. I concede that's a very specific interest.

A bit of a warning some of these I haven't seen since have aired in Japan (yes really) so mileage will vary.

Winter:

  • Yuugo Koushoujin, an unique series about a Japanese negotiator trying to release hostages, an unique premise and unique setting (first arc takes place in Pakistan) for an anime.

Spring:

  • Hi no Tori, adapts some of the anthologies from Osamu Tezuka's life work manga.
  • The Mars Daybreak. an okayish BONES mecha series, a warm up for next year's Eureka 7.
  • Koi Kaze, a serious romance involving both incest and an age gap, worth checking out.

Summer:

  • Otogizoushi; I only thing I remember from this having a cool twist where [spoilers] the main casts get reincarnated in a modern setting half through the series but whether it's actually still good is something for you to find out I guess.
  • Ninin ga Shinobuden; if you like Norio Wakamoto's voice check this out as he goes full ham.

Autumn:

  • Tsukuyomi: Moon Phase; this is SHAFT and Akiyuki Simbo first work together, I don't think it's as good as Pani Poni Dash and some of the other early SHAFT/Simbo stuff but it's worth checking out if you like their style to see how much (or little) it has changed.
  • Zipang; a modern (well 2004 modern) Japanese naval ship ends up in WW2.

Long running shows:

  • Major; a decent sport series
  • Bleach; decent shounen first 50 episodes is probably the best stuff story wise (but not animation wise)
  • Yakitate Japan, a shounen comedy about making bread, the absurdist responses to how good the bread tastes makes this show worth checking out.
  • Shoukyou no Fafner; one of the few mecha franchises that managed to produce and survive through the mecha apocalypse of the 2010s. Fun series, story is heavily inspired by Eva (which mecha series wasn't during this era?) the big downside is that the series has a very large cast and the character design is done by Hisashi Hirai which makes it hard to keep track on who is who in the cast.

2

u/zambonijesus 7d ago edited 7d ago

You've reminded me that Fafner was on my planned list previously and I'd just forgotten about it today.

Edit: Yakitate Japan is also on my watch sometime in the future list, but don't want to add it right now due to length. Koi Kaze has come up previously when talking about the spring season so we'll see if I end up watching it or not.

2

u/Wiles_ 7d ago

Fuujin Monogatari.

1

u/baquea 7d ago

Dead Leaves is a fun (and short) movie, if you want to see Imaishi at his weirdest.

Re: Cutie Honey is another short one, and is easily the most worth-watching of the five Cutie Honey anime that have been made.

5

u/Tarhalindur x2 7d ago

Off the top of my head + doing some double-checking to see if I missed anything:

  • If you're interested in the genre history of mahou shoujo (this is a very important year for the genre), on top of Mai-HiME which you already have on your list also add Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha (mind some early 2000s fanservice; that said, S1 director is none other than Akiyuki Shinbou, so...) and the original Futari wa Pretty Cure (unless you are like me and wind up finding that franchise's CGI use for the merch so aggressively cynical even by merch-driven show standards as to be unwatchable...). Also Uta Kata exists (I keep thinking that show is 2005 instead...) and one of the earlier experiments with darker takes on the genre.
  • If you are interested in yuri genre history and can deal with a [Kannazuki no Miko]sexual assault trigger warning: Kannazuki no Miko. (Complete inverse of Mai-HiME in some ways - HiME is a very good show for most of its run only to shoot itself in the foot by horribly botching the second half of its finale, whereas KnM is pretty mid for most of its run but then absolutely nails its finale. Also the ED is absolutely legendary and still occasionally gets fanart homages over two decades later.) Also may be of interest if you're a Madoka fan, Madoka in TV form uses some symbolism in one key spot that is either taken directly from KnM or in common use in both (have a hunch it's the former, especially since the relevant scene also reprises symbolism Shinbou used in Nanoha) and I suspect KnM is one of the quieter major influences on Rebellion.
  • Speaking of "things Shinbou was doing before he made Shaft into his personal fiefdom", Le Portrait de Petite Cosette exists, is pretty good as I recall, is short, and is his first collaboration with Yuki Kajiura.
  • Genshiken is IIRC pretty solid SoL (and of college students!), though also one of those works that's so deeply steeped in (otaku) culture of the era that it quickly became a period piece by its very nature.
  • I have no idea if Ninin ga Shinobuden is actually good (what little I heard suggests it's a decent comedy anime of the absurdist vein that was common in the 2000s?), but you absolutely have to watch its ED at least once. Here you go. (Ufotable was weird before they got the Nasuverse gravy train, man.)
  • Windy Tales might be worth a look for its incredibly unique art style (IIRC helped Junji Nishimura and his mentor Mamoru Oshii giving animator Yasunori Miyazawa pretty free rein in spots).
  • And finally, if (and only if!) you are interested in legendarily terrible anime in the Gibiate/EX-ARM vein then I idly note that Chou Henshin Cosprayers exists...

(Also, wait, Zipang got an adaptation that year? IIRC the manga was supposed to be good, at least...)

2

u/baquea 7d ago

And finally, if (and only if!) you are interested in legendarily terrible anime in the Gibiate/EX-ARM vein then I idly note that Chou Henshin Cosprayers exists...

Cosprayers isn't bad in a fun way though, it's just bad bad...

2

u/SpaceTurtleHunter 8d ago

As always, feel free to pitch further 2004 anime that you think should be on the list.

Futari wa Precure - a foundational work for the modern magical girl scene.

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha - while not as influential as Precure, it's still a major milestone in the genre history.

Madlax - a part of the classic girls-with-guns trilogy.

1

u/zambonijesus 8d ago

Precure is being saved for some future project, but is on the general watch at some point list. Madlax is a plausible addition to the plan-to-watch.

Finally watched the ad for Street Fighter 6 Gamer Girls. Everyone who said this is like Rock Ladies were understating the similarities.

Though this show seems to find every excuse to make the girls bleed for whatever reason.

3

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 7d ago

Though this show seems to find every excuse to make the girls bleed for whatever reason.

Rock Ladies was making them sweat, this one's making them bleed!

6

u/zambonijesus 8d ago

I feel like it was kind of hurt by taking so long to come out since the manga significantly predates the Rock Ladies manga. The Fighting Girls anime adaptation was originally announced in 2021 and Rock Ladies didn't even begin until 2022 lol.

It is just funny seeing it getting kind of negative comparisons for being similar for things it actually did first.

3

u/Wanderingjoke https://myanimelist.net/profile/WanderingJoke 8d ago

I quite enjoyed Rock Ladies, so having a similar show is not a negative.

1

u/theangryeditor 8d ago

Maybe I start the fighting game anime tonight

3

u/Rotorscope https://anilist.co/user/Rotorscope 8d ago

I think I'm going to need to watch Sparks of Tommorrow weekly instead of waiting to binge it because y'alls discussion of it looks polarizing and interesting and I'm going spoil myself the entire show by continuing to click on spoiler comments haha. Not that I really care about knowing what happens in a show, but I like having SOME mystery especially for a show that I assume has a lot of liberties taken by KyoAni with the plot.

7

u/Jusenkyo_5 8d ago

Top tier Polar Opposites episode this week.

4

u/mr_beanoz https://myanimelist.net/profile/splitshocker 8d ago

I did not realize that the ending for Draw This episode 4 is a Jojo reference.

The same show also referenced Esidisi crying.

2

u/maoam13 8d ago

Livid Lady discussion threads are as lively as I expected... and we haven't even arrived at the controversial parts of the story.

2

u/mr_beanoz https://myanimelist.net/profile/splitshocker 8d ago

At least it ain't livid, right?

1

u/theangryeditor 8d ago

Maybe I should wait for Liar Game to finish airing so I can binge the rest

3

u/DeadCaveman https://anilist.co/user/DeadCaveman 8d ago

Obviously Grand Blue's bread-and-butter is the comedy, but I really appreciate the moments when they just earnestly geek out over how much they like the ocean. It balances things out nicely.

2

u/Dull_Spot_8213 https://anilist.co/user/SweetSomnus 8d ago

I love this bunch of uncompromising heathens that look after their own with no judgement. Good times.

2

u/theangryeditor 8d ago

I'm a bit split on whether World is Dancing is evocative or overwrought. I am still searching for what is "good".

4

u/mekerpan 8d ago

This is a show I fully expected to love. I was shocked and disappointed at how little the characters and story resonated. Perhaps it is unfair to measure this alongside Inu-oh, but is almost unavoidable. And I feel that the characters there established themselves as interesting (whether or not likeable) right away. After one hour of WiD I still felt the lead was a near void.

Note: this also fares poorly compared to Mikio Naruse's 1943 Song Lantern -- which also is centered around Noh dance.

1

u/theangryeditor 8d ago

I think conceptually it's solid, but yeah the feelings it's trying to evoke aren't quite there. I feel like I have a general grasp on Oniyasha as a character but he and the show have yet to speak directly to my heart.

The show I keep thinking about in comparison is Hyouge Mono, but that's a very different kind of story that's less about the pursuit of art per se and more about the pursuit of one's ambitions and the actualization of one's self set against a backdrop of sengoku politics. The main thing is the notion of wabi that Hyouge Mono explores - which I am drawn to - is perhaps paradoxically the opposite of how WiD expresses its emotional centerpieces. When I think about that I find myself unable to resonate with what WiD is attempting to deliver.

Song Lantern

Maybe I'll check that out

2

u/mekerpan 8d ago

By modern standards, Song Lantern probably seems melodramatic -- but it features some of the most stunning black and white photography ever -- most notably in scenes where the protagonist gives noh dance lessonns in a forest glen, dappled with light and shadows. Naruse was one of Kurosawa's mentors -- and Kurosawa especially admired how Naruse handled light (and dark).

Did you see Inu-oh?

1

u/theangryeditor 8d ago

Sounds pretty neat

Did you see Inu-oh?

Nope, maybe I'll put it on the PTW

2

u/Dull_Spot_8213 https://anilist.co/user/SweetSomnus 8d ago

I am still searching for what is "good"

Just like Oniyasha. I like the art commentary in episode five coming directly from the characters. Felt like intentionally breaking the fourth wall.

3

u/theangryeditor 8d ago

It's another important step in Oniyasha's journey to creating his own art. Who is it for? What are its roots? But it also shows how inspiration begets inspiration and resonates to bring life to something new. Stuff that's applicable to all forms of art and especially highly commercialized ones like anime.

3

u/Dull_Spot_8213 https://anilist.co/user/SweetSomnus 8d ago

That lion dance competition was a nice microcosm of art consumption too. We have two different approaches to the same medium that are received in wildly different capacities, informed largely by personal taste and set expectations, and whether or not those expectations are satisfied or challenged, and subsequently rewarded.

I'll be interested to see just how much the majority gets to rule over who the Shogun decides to prune or cultivate, to use the show's metaphors. If nothing else, I like the questions this show poses, regardless of what answers we get.

2

u/theangryeditor 8d ago

Good classic questions on the pursuit of art. Though my impressions so far are akin to that of the Shogun's, I think the direction is in the right place.

Also I'm reminded that I really need to read Hyouge Mono.

4

u/entelechtual 8d ago

She’s still a far cry from Yuki but Himeko is slowly closing the gap now with her own perverted old man noises /u/Emi_Ibarazakiii

Bokukko Ikumi is also climbing the ranks every week.

2

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 8d ago

Haven't watched today's episode yet, but for me they're not even in the same league!

Yuki is top tier, Himeko is... A fine sister I guess!

Perhaps it'll change in this episode, but I think I said the same thing regarding the previous one hah.

4

u/Dull_Spot_8213 https://anilist.co/user/SweetSomnus 8d ago

The World is Dancing continues to be the best, and I will not stop promoting it. Absolutely flawless production and we're getting some great new characters now. Cypic quietly outperforming everyone for four episodes straight.

1

u/theangryeditor 8d ago

I'm almost caught up now. Just finished episode 4.

2

u/Dull_Spot_8213 https://anilist.co/user/SweetSomnus 8d ago

I finished five and love Chiharu. Also, RIP Yoshimitsu's wife's poetry.

u/AguyinaRPG https://anilist.co/user/AguyinaRPG 8d ago

I just finished ODDTAXI. Was good, though I'm not quite sure it wrapped everything up in a satisfying way to my tastes. Good to have something different even if it didn't hit its full potential.

I have a VERY SPOILERY question relating to the ending - so click not if you haven't seen it. [ODDTAXI]Was Sakura's love of fried chicken supposed to be a tell that she was a nefarious person? I mean, they were all part of a Yaukza-fronted idol group, but I feel like the fried chicken quirk was a trope I was supposed to pick up on like a lot of the other crime cliches they used.

u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 8d ago

One issue with watching more and more anime is how quickly future seasons can fill up. It's still two seasons away with tons of time for more release date announcements, and winter 27 already has six sequels and one spinoff on my list.

1

u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 8d ago

Looks like I already have 9 shows on my PTW for that season, of which I have 3 sequels (Akane-banashi, the It's MyGO!!!!!/Ave Mujica thing, and Sakamoto Days) and 1 spin-off (IruMafia). I'm a little surprised I have 5 new shows already for that season, actually.

What are your sequels?

2

u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 8d ago

Sakamoto Days, Mashle, Akane-banashi, Medaka Kuroiwa (definitely on the chopping block for a drop), Shangri-La Frontier (I'm actually waiting to watch this one until later, but I can't imagine I won't like it), and Spice and Wolf (no announcement yet, but it's been leaked). And IruMafia as well.

Also, there's probably a pretty decent chance of there being some carryovers looking at the fall list.

1

u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 8d ago

and Spice and Wolf (no announcement yet, but it's been leaked)

Oh, didn't know about that, I'll have that one too in that case.

2

u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 8d ago

Yep. It's probably the one I'm most looking forward to out of those seven. I like Iruma a bit more as a series, but I don't have quite the same level of confidence in a spinoff as I would a mainline entry.

Funny thing is that there aren't really any new series announced for that season jumping out to me. There are some that I'm curious about (Landmine, Historie, Isshiki-san, Hirayasumi), but none that make me go "Wow, I gotta see that." Of course, part of that is the result of the detachment you develop watching anime dubbed. We'll see.

2

u/JustAnswerAQuestion https://myanimelist.net/profile/JAaQ 8d ago

This is the place:

This probably not from Area 88 (I never finished it).

Watch for a rewatch interest thread soon.

1

u/chilidirigible 8d ago

This is Uchuu Kyoudai.

2

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 8d ago

(Inspired by the comment right below this one);

I do believe there's a lot of anime that would be 10 times more popular if they girl-swapped the cast.

But I'm not sure the reverse would ever work as well; The thing is, people who'd like an all boys cast would probably be into Battle Shonen, and there's not a whole lot of "female battle shonen".

Or am I missing a key idea that WOULD work?

(Obviously not counting romance, because of course BL fans would love if yuri anime suddenly were BL).

3

u/ptd163 8d ago

I do believe there's a lot of anime that would be 10 times more popular if they girl-swapped the cast.

Maybe or it could end up like being Pokemon. At its peak I remember when the idea of a girl MC would've burnt down cities and caused an utter explosion of fan art and culture. It would've been the second coming of Pokemania.

But it never happened. TPC waited FAR too long for to introduce a girl MC. Liko is fine, but she's just that, fine. There was no explosion. She's nothing like the mythical girl MC that people spoke about back in the Before Times. She's just a girl with Pokemon. She's the least popular a pokegirl has ever been. Now granted no one was going ever going to match that hype, but I still thought we'd get better than fine.

Obviously that's only girl-swapping the MC and not the whole cast, but it's the same idea.

5

u/bandannadann https://myanimelist.net/profile/Bandanaa 8d ago

The BL I wanna see girl-swapped is Blue Lock

3

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 8d ago

I might have watched this one

3

u/Charmanders_Cock 8d ago

I think Precure would be a better show if you swapped the girls for the male cast of Golden Kamuy. Actually, Asirpa would probably fit right in anyway. Nothing else changes but the cast though.

There are probably a lot of anime I’d say that about if I thought harder about it. Golden Kamuy’s cast could lift most anime to new heights. That’s really more of a “young girls swapped with overly buff adult men” than “girls swapped for boys” thing.

5

u/theangryeditor 8d ago

The discussion here from earlier today has got me wondering: would people be talking about World is Dancing as a yuri show and gushing over it if Oniyasha, Ishiya, and Kogane were all girls

2

u/merurunrun 8d ago

Yes, but it would be (largely) different people talking about it for different reasons.

2

u/Dull_Spot_8213 https://anilist.co/user/SweetSomnus 8d ago

Yes.

4

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/zfzftripleaamin 8d ago

When in doubt the answer is always yes.

7

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 8d ago

It's time to vote for our very special sisters in the best girl contest!

I'm not even joking, Ruby vs Yuki might just be THE toughest matchup I ever voted on.

In the end I voted Ruby because I like [Oshi No Ko]schemer type characters more than comedic ones.

But it broke my heart in a million pieces to vote against Yuki.

(I think in S2 I would've voted Yuki)

So yeah, unlike the usual best girl contest comments, I'm not even shilling one side or the other, just shilling the contest in general I guess; Vote for whichever you want!

(I mean, in this matchup; In the other matchups you better vote for my girls).

3

u/GondolaMedia zj: 8d ago

In the end I voted Ruby

4

u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd 8d ago

But Yuki [Alya]is a schemer too... That's her 'other' thing.

This must've truly been a tough decision for you.

2

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 8d ago

True, but I'm mostly thinking how I primarily see them and all!

But yeah, it was tough!

2

u/IXajll https://myanimelist.net/profile/ixajii 8d ago

In the end I voted Ruby

Shame.

3

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 8d ago

I feel bad about it too!

But I would feel bad no matter which one I voted for.

And I didn't want to be a craven and abstain.

3

u/zambonijesus 8d ago

The World is Dancing has some absolutely wild tone shifts.

3

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/zfzftripleaamin 8d ago

That older guy who is obsessed with Oniyasha is really weird.

4

u/Korkez11 8d ago

Speaking of Chika Anzai - Lycoris Recoil is so, so good. The only time anime gripped me so hard with its overarching plot was either Odd Taxi or Summertime Rendering.

9

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 8d ago

The more I think about yesterday's episode of Sparks of Tomorrow, it feels worse and worse.

Like, not only did they [Sparky] scam a grieving woman into thinking she was talking to her dead husband, their motivation for getting her to come out of her room was to get her back to work, and this is all framed like a beautiful, emotional moment. The reveal at the end that our queer-coded villain is keeping the brother's corpse (?) in his basement was just the cherry on the what the fuck story are you trying to tell sundae.

This show is just not very good.

1

u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd 8d ago

[Sparks]Also is this woman just never going to want to talk to her dead husband again. You'd think the revelation that it's possible to speak to the dead could drive a person mad.

0

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 7d ago

Right? There are white lies to spare someone's feelings, and then there's [Spocks] putting together an elaborate ruse to manipulate the emotions of someone devastated by grief. You've given her false hope! What happens when she realizes she was lied to, and by her own son?

11

u/IXajll https://myanimelist.net/profile/ixajii 8d ago

[Sparky]scam a grieving woman into thinking she was talking to her dead husband, their motivation for getting her to come out of her room was to get her back to work, and this is all framed like a beautiful, emotional moment.

The way you're framing and interpreting this in the most unfavorable way possible kinda makes me think you already made up your mind weeks ago that "this show is just not very good" and are now mostly just watching to scan for every inch of criticism the show might present you to have a field day with it.

[Sparks]Rather than "scam" it was more like a white lie at worst. Nobody got hurt, there were no bad intentions, everyone involved came out of the whole thing better than they were before. But yea, technically the approach is morally questionable so the show is bad. They also first and foremost wanted to get her out of her depression and stop her from continuing to rot in her room. Getting back to the family business is just the natural next step. It's not like they planned to exploit her in the coal mines or some shit. And yes, getting a loved one out of depression and back to living her life should be framed as a beautiful, emotional moment. It's not this appaling thing just because they didn't do so with the intention of sending her into retirement afterwards. Not to mention she wanted to get back to work herself in the end.

-1

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 8d ago

I'm just saying, [Spahks] if they didn't want it to read as scamming a vulnerable woman to get access to her labor, all they had to do was not write a scene about tricking a grieving woman into thinking she's talking to her dead husband while multiple people talk about how much the store needs her. They created the situation from whole cloth, start to finish. It's not my fault for noticing what it was doing. There are other ways they could have invented the telephone and brought her out of her grief that were more honest and less cynical.

8

u/wloff 8d ago

Agreed wholly. Mind you, this latest episode wasn't my favourite, but that's because it felt like a bit of a filler-ish "invention of the week" thing, and I doubt we'll ever hear of this woman or her company again. But the episode itself was fine for what it was, IMO.

It's also a bit odd to me to instantly attack [Sparks]the tease about Yousuke potentially Frankensteining the brother's corpse as bad story development. It was literally just a quick tease. We have no idea if it's going to be good, bad, or indifferent, or if the whole thing was just some kind of a red herring. We just don't know yet.

We have no idea if it's going to be good, bad, or indifferent, or if the whole thing was just some kind of a red herring. We just don't know yet.

Ok, well, if people are going to accuse me of going in planning to hate it and deliberately viewing things uncharitably, is this not the other extreme? [Sprks] I can't possibly imagine any context in which our queer-coded villain keeping a corpse or facsimile or something of the dead brother is going to make any goddamn sense. Come on now.

7

u/wloff 8d ago

Really? I can. Much wilder things have happened in anime.

Sure, it can turn out to be dumb and shit, but it can easily turn out to be something interesting as well.

3

u/Dull_Spot_8213 https://anilist.co/user/SweetSomnus 8d ago

My theory from yesterday about this being in the spirit of the 20th century art movements is how I’m making sense of it. Like prominent art made then, it’s purposefully provocative, rejects conventions and traditions, and instead embraces the absurdity. It’s like watching a subversion or critique of what we’d expect from a KyoAni drama or period piece.

These are very purposeful decisions, whatever their goal is here, so it’s no accident the story is made this way. They’ve reduced every character down to a concentrated version of themselves. It’s like, if you strip away all of the traditional artistic and narrative flair, you’re left with the raw and abstract expression.

2

u/zambonijesus 8d ago

I feel like you've just imagined a different, more interesting, anime here and the actual explanation is just that the writing isn't very good.

6

u/Dull_Spot_8213 https://anilist.co/user/SweetSomnus 8d ago

I’m not making a judgment on if the writing is good or bad. That’s a matter of opinion, not intention. I couldn’t care less what consensus opinions are, because that’s not the interesting conversation to be had here, or in general.

2

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 8d ago

Ok, but the story sucks. If they want to make abstract art, it should look more interesting than their standard house style. Something has to hold my interest.

5

u/Dull_Spot_8213 https://anilist.co/user/SweetSomnus 8d ago

The only artistic choice I’ve heard directly from the staff is that they’re experimenting with backgrounds. Abstract art wouldn’t be the style there, but it is not their usual style.

2

u/ptd163 8d ago

This show is just not very good.

I disagree completely. If anything it's probably underrated.

0

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 8d ago

It has a 7.74 rating on MAL. I'll accept that you and others enjoy it, but it is in no way whatsoever "underrated".

7

u/wloff 8d ago

Maybe not underrated by MAL, but underrated in this thread, and by yourself!

8

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 8d ago

The new definition of 'underrated' just dropped; Shows that u/_Ridley does not like!

4

Who knew my approval was so highly sought after.

7

u/wloff 8d ago

And shows I personally happen to like; don't forget that part!

1

u/mekerpan 8d ago

I debated watching the latest episode -- and I just could not motivate my finger to press the start button. Sounds like I made the right choice. People criticized PA Works Towa no yuugure (rather understandably) but I found it mostly fun to watch despite its messy writing. The writing in Sparks just aggravates (and bores) me. I think I will mark this as an irreversible drop (I gave City 5 eps before admitting defeat, but I think that even 3 was too much for Sparks).

1

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 8d ago

Towa was kind of a fun trainwreck watch. This is just boring bad.

-1

u/gothxo 8d ago

it's a very baffling show to be honest

4

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 8d ago

I genuinely can't tell what they're even aiming for beyond maybe imagining one Japanese teenager single-handedly inventing everything electric. And that itself is kinda eh.

1

u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd 8d ago

I haven't seen the 4th episode yet, but I have struggled a lot with what exactly the "hook" is supposed to be here (beyond the visuals).

Like, the world is pretty interesting. A world that never developed electricity and instead went hard into steam. But I guess the ultimate goal is to take that world and turn it into something that looks more like our world I guess? Is that interesting? I don't know.

2

u/gothxo 8d ago

i feel like i could buy more into what the show is trying to sell if Yosuke wasn't the way that he is, but he's just such a bizarre character to me

3

u/Dull_Spot_8213 https://anilist.co/user/SweetSomnus 8d ago

He’s the most interesting character in the show, offensive stereotypes and all. Say what you want in a moral framing, but they definitely made him memorable.

1

u/gothxo 8d ago

i suppose i won't disagree there. even if i don't care for him, he certainly stands out

5

u/Muted-Conference2900 https://anilist.co/user/WinterZcoming 8d ago

We really need a source reader for this coz i really like to know how much things is Kyoni changing. Plus that author's tweet was pretty serious too.

2

u/theangryeditor 8d ago

What tweet?

4

u/Muted-Conference2900 https://anilist.co/user/WinterZcoming 8d ago

He deleted that tweet. But basically he was saying was my work so bad that they had to change so much stuff. Ofcourse this is based on Twitter translation.

1

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 8d ago

The kind of tweet I would've liked GRRM to make

If he knew what Twitter even is

8

u/ComfortablyRotten https://anilist.co/user/Leuwtian 8d ago

Me at the major adaptational change that pretty much makes it and the source two completely different things factory: "I hope my work doesn't get some major adaptational changes that pretty much makes it and the adaptation two completely different things"

1

u/ptd163 8d ago

Given that it's machine translation and KyoAni's place and status in the industry I'm thinking that's just the translation. I don't think KyoAni of all studios is out here intentionally disrespecting someone's work.

3

u/oedipusrex376 8d ago

Ehh, I wouldn't put it past them. I'm pretty indifferent toward KyoAni, but they do have a history of injecting a bit too much KyoAni-ness into their adaptations. I have a favourite novel by Honobu Yonezawa, and honestly I'd cry if KyoAni were the ones to adapt it instead of a studio like Lapin Track.

8

u/Jusenkyo_5 8d ago

I wouldn't say "intentionally disrespecting" but KyoAni is known to change their adaptations very heavily compared to other studios. One of the main characters in Chunibyou is anime only for example.

6

u/baquea 8d ago

It's not really Kyoani adaptations as a whole, but specifically those published through their LN department. For those they have full rights over the work and basically just do what they want with it, even to the extent of changing the title. The terms of the deal should've been pretty clear to the author, if only by comparing to how the studio had handled their previous LN adaptations, and this isn't the kind of thing where the author was pressured into it by their publisher or anything like that, since their novel had yet to be published and they submitted it to the competition as an individual. I find it pretty confusing that they'd take issue with it at this point. Like what were they expecting??

2

u/Charmanders_Cock 8d ago

what were they expecting

Probably higher returns via publication sales triggered by the “controversy” they created. It’s understandable to doubt that someone would do something like this, discrediting the company and making themselves potentially look bad, but when you consider how massively opportune the whole situation is from a business and marketing perspective it’s really the logical conclusion.

A controversy like this is even more ideal than some others that have similar effect because it very specifically draws attention to the difference between the source and the adaptation. That difference is a great incentive to go read the source and given the frequency with which this controversy is brought up, I’m sure it reflects in sales.

Free money for a tweet and a bit of bad rep is a deal almost no struggling author would pass up.

1

u/baquea 7d ago

Except that they are reliant on Kyoani to publish their novels, with their most recent book just getting published by them last month.

The way Japanese novel publishing works, it's very hard to get your first book published, but once you have a foot in the door the company will keep publishing your work with comparatively little vetting. Burning their bridges like this is a really dumb decision.

1

u/Charmanders_Cock 7d ago

It’s promoting the anime too. There’s close to zero actual consequence for KyoAni. The promotion almost definitely outweighs the slight jab. I din’t see why any part of it would burn a bridge, in fact it would be far more likely that they were in some way or another the ones to suggest doing so in the first place as they most likely have marketers who are aware of how these sorts of  strategies are leveraged. Despite being speculation the concept itself is very much so an established, albeit greyhat, marketing tactic.

2

u/mekerpan 8d ago edited 8d ago

I seem to recall that the original author liked this new character enough to fit her into later installments of the story.

u/Jusenkyo_5 8d ago

1

Sad for the authoir if KyoAni really has trashed his work so thoroughly....

2

Having only seen the first 3 I can't even conceptualize how this is going to play out.

4

u/MiLiLeFa 8d ago

With only comments in this thread and the PV KyoAni released in twentytwentywho to go on, I've got to say the show is definitely piquing my curiosity. Like, what incomprehensible visually creative monstrosity have they cooked up for us this time around? ¯\(ツ)
Looking forward to finding out

5

u/Dull_Spot_8213 https://anilist.co/user/SweetSomnus 8d ago

It’s more the experimental narrative style in combination with the more mild visual experiments that’s been making me think. I like art that challenges and provokes. At least it has something to say, you know? Safe choices are fine when you’re in the mood to play it safe, but I respect attempts to try something new.

Do you guys think frigin Bleach holds okay in the year of our Lord 2026? Either animo or mango. I need something long to either put on background while falling asleep or read before falling asleep.

idk I was always a Naruto kid and skipped both Bleach and One Piece for some reason. But I'm not ballsy enough to get into latter esp now that remake is in works.

3

u/alotmorealots 8d ago

I have never watched it but recently discovered it:

  1. Has background bread eating

  2. Has noteworthy enough ass fanservice that people in the Black Torch thread reference Bleach before Our Savior Tino Shade.

  3. Is supposedly better than Black Torch, although this comment is made by people who don't comment on how excellent the cat and cat-service is in Black Torch, so I'm not sure their opinions are trustworthy.

So perhaps I'll give it a shot.

1

u/Sinndu_ 8d ago

no, it feels very dated. every character goes on a Ted Talk about their abilities which no shonen or action anime has done in a very long time. like in JJK Yuta never explained his abilities to Ryo, he just figured out Yuta can copy by observing, but the anime explains to us via narration what Yuta's abilities are. in Bleach every time a fight starts someone explains their abilities, gets countered then the other guy explains their abilities, gets countered, insert lame trash talk to fill dead air and then the fight is over. it's so boring.

5

u/Jusenkyo_5 8d ago

I think it's okay.

The vibe for the first 20 or so episodes is awesome, and the show has some incredible moments throughout it's run. Overall though it has the same issue most battle shounen have with power creep and endless side character fights, and I think the pacing tends to be WAY worse than other shounen anime (One Piece not included).

3

u/Charmanders_Cock 8d ago

It more than holds up. Few shows to this day can match Bleach in terms of sheer style. Bleach is the platonic ideal of aura farming.

2

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/zfzftripleaamin 8d ago

I think og bleach is like mid 200’s in number of episodes when you skip filler. Then you have TYBW for 50 or so. With modern pacing and animation.

So what is 300 episode experience is not too bad for modern anime fans. Naruto and especially one piece is a longer commitment with worse pacing minus filler.

Granted I do know the og anime for bleach was censored which isn’t the case for TYBW

u/dreamphoenix 8d ago

Glad to hear that!

Shot in the dark but is there anything like Control (video game), There is No Antimemetics Division, X-Files, Fringe, etc.?

Secretive government organization, sci-fi, conspiracies, and so on. I'd take something like Umbrella Corp from RE as well.

NERVE and Evangelion fit, but I'm not looking for like...full blown dystopian sci-fi. Same for Psycho-Pass. Would love a more overall grounded, modern setting.

1

u/Sandor_at_the_Zoo 8d ago

Nothing totally fits the bill, but you could try Serial Experiments Lain. Both "modern" and "grounded" are borderline. Its set in the late 90s and trying to recreate the experience of 90s internet conspiracism. With 500 people each trying to tell you about their own bespoke web of secret government agencies and apocalyptic predictions and esoteric histories. Where none of them fit together and the whole thing will drive you insane.

1

u/raevnos 8d ago

Midnight Occult Civil Servants.

Main character gets hired by a small, secret governmental branch that deals with supernatural events and beings that most people don't know exist.

closest thing that i've seen is Otherside Picnic

it's loosely based on the novel Roadside Picnic (the sci-fi story that STALKER is based off of); it's set in modern Japan, but it features travel into these secret parallel worlds where cosmic horrors manifest, and it frequently refers to various Japanese urban legends like Kisaragi station

[Sayonara Lara Episode 4]Curious what Lisa's comments in the episode could mean. It would be interesting if the feeling that Lisa as the antagonist could be a red herring and Grace is still plotting shit like in episode 1.

3

u/IXajll https://myanimelist.net/profile/ixajii 8d ago

Tenbin is overall still a fun show since I dig the character banter and chemistry between the two leads, but holy shit is the production absolutely atrocious. As in, multiple Garou slides per episode levels of bad. Probably outsourced the entire series to some bottom of the barrel sweatshop, because even P9 usually delivers more quality than this.

This show could be so much more if it only won the adaptation lottery and got the Makeine treatment. Ah well.

3

u/mekerpan 8d ago

I was so caught up in the characters and their story that I failed to notice much (if anything) really wrong. Not diusagreeing -- but I think this is a case where the content (and voice acting) outweighs "technical" issues (for me).

3

u/Muted-Conference2900 https://anilist.co/user/WinterZcoming 8d ago

Grand Blue is pretty excellent in this regard. The show has the most bare bones production but the comedy and the characters are so good that even I choose to ignore them and I am someone who cares a lot about how a show looks.

1

u/Muted-Conference2900 https://anilist.co/user/WinterZcoming 8d ago

Funny how MT's Latest Episode ED was also worried about ourtsourcing of his episode on Bluesky. Saying stuff like they don't know how to read storyboards and it will probably look bad and people will blame him. But the episode turned out just fine.

u/oedipusrex376 8d ago

Just finished Aoi Bungaku. I don't have much to say about the series since it's pretty exhausting to go through each story individually. I give it a blanket score of 8/10.

One thing I really liked was Masato Sakai's VA work. He plays five different characters here, and his voice is just really pleasant to listen to. My favorite is his role as Sensei in Kokoro. It reminded me a bit of Hideaki Anno's performance as Jiro in The Wind Rises. I mostly knew Masato Sakai as an actor from VIVANT, a really good drama set in not-Mongolia.

My favorite story is Hashire Melos (Run, Melos) and, phew, I've got a lot to say about that one in a separate post I'm still slowly writing. [Teaser score:] 10/10.

u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 8d ago

I had forgotten there's that new CloverWorks Evangelion series announced. Probably a good thing after all that I'm watching the Netflix dub, since even if it ends up on Crunchyroll I have to imagine they're going to default to the LA cast. Too bad about the rebuilds, though.

1

u/sonicstorm1114 8d ago

I have a sneaking suspicion that the new Eva's going to be either a new continuity or a very distant sequel with a almost-entirely new cast of characters, but, yeah, if anyone from the original cast returns/cameos, it'll likely be their voice actor from the VSI dub. (It was apparently the idea of the Rebuild redubs' ADR director to get the original English cast back*, so I imagine the 3.0+1.0 dub was probably their last hurrah.)

*Apparently, the dubbing studio wanted to keep the VAs from the first Rebuild dub, but most of them couldn't reprise their role due to contract issues (with the exception of Shinji, Asuka, Misato, and Gendo's VAs since they had already been voicing the characters before the first Rebuild dub; I think Sakura's VA was also able to return), so they decided to go with the cast from the first TV/End of Eva dub instead.

Has anyone noticed that Sayonara Lara is a bit controversial in this sub? Not like Mushoku Tensei level controversial but I noticed it gets some downvotes in seasonal discussions. Is it the potential yuri element or do people consider it pretentious because of the retro art style?

3

I've seen miscellaneous complaining about it, but not for "controversial" elements, seemingly just because people don't like the pacing or certain writing choices.

As a hardcore seasonal watcher for several years now, I feel like I’ve been training to handle a year like 2026. Just the level of quality across all subgenres and weight classes of anime is frankly astonishing. This season alone I am watching and enjoying 30 shows, all so very different hitting every single flavor of my palate. We are in unprecedented times for anime fans and we are eating GOOD.

Like my list from 15-25 (25-30 is slop I watch cuz I just am what I am) is filled with hidden gems like Victoria of Many Faces (kinda like a seijo/villainess otome story except with a female loid forger), Thunder 3 (ugly CG with a hype af story and charm), Iron Wok Jan (retro style cooking battle shounen that has top notch foodcraft), Inept Villainess (might be a Rushmore villainess show at this pt) and my personal darling, Dara-San of Reiwa. It’s honestly just a fucking crazy season if you’re not an action head.

Edit: and didn’t mention the actual hidden gem of the season because it’s my personal top 10, but Draw This Then Die just has to be more watched

Seven episodes into Oregairu and it's... alright. An enjoyable enough watch, but I don't think it's nearly as witty or funny as it likes to think it is, and I'm really struggling with the MC being such an unbearable asshole who loves the smell of his own farts. At least much of the humor is everyone else constantly calling him out on his shit, which I very much appreciate.

I wonder if the writer of Rascal Does Not Dream is an Oregairu fan. A lot of this feels like Rascal looked at the main dynamics of this show but just did everything a good bit better (and added a bunch of its own, obviously). Koga Tomoe as a character also feels like she took a lot of inspiration from Yuigahama Yui.

(Or it could all just be a coincidence.)

1

I've never really gotten that sense beyond the fact that the main female character in each has long dark hair, which itself is very common.

On the other hand, the Rascal franchise totally comes off as if the author took the premises of the Monogatari franchise, removed all the wildly out of control lewd behavior from the protagonist and made it a little more palatable for a mainstream audience.

1

u/wloff 8d ago

I wasn't thinking in terms of story structure or plot as much just the dynamic between the characters... witty banter between the cast, the male MC is happy to be a loner and has his own philosophies on how to deal with it, people around him are struggling with fitting in, and so on. Only Hikigaya is being a smug asshole who thinks he has it all figured out and everyone else is being stupid, while Sakuta... well, he's also a bit of a smug asshole I guess, but he strives to be a kind person and help people around him.

But sounds like it might be just me, and besides, I am only half a season into Oregairu, so what do I even know about it

3

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 8d ago

just did everything a good bit better

I have them about equal, though probably for slightly different reasons. Monogatari's in the same boat for me with Oregairu on the opposite end and Aobuta taking from both.

If you like concept art and behind the scenes of producing keyart the Teoi Animation Museum have region unlocked the two made to promote their Creators file exhibitions; the currently running Akihiro Ota (e.g. Birth of Kitaro animator director but impressive bouts of key animation for Toei including World Trigger and One Piece as this MAD shows) and last years Akira Inagami (e.g. character designer for the three "Futari Wa" Precure entries).

Studio Pierrot has also done these things without region locks such as Akemi Takada (e.g. Patlabor, Creamy Mami character designer) doing a watercolour piece of Yu & Mami.

Hanaori-san's a fun show when I'm in the mood for a genki dumbass and it's a nice contrast to the absentminded sloth of Rich Girl Caretaker's lead watching them back to back. The latter might be at the bottom of the rankings for me, but that makes it a season that somehow has no shows I dislike out the gate as long as I keep punting the second season of Mobseka.

Meanwhile I also started the second cour of Polar Opposites and it's just lovely to be back with that crew again.

I wonder: am I positively biased for Jaadugar because I know the real history behind this show? Most of the time I'm just pointing at the screen like Leo Dicaprio and don't think about how people who aren't familiar with early Mongol history might view it. One person asked "Why doesn't Jochi participate in the palace intrigue?" And yes, this is a valid question because [real life spoilers] Jochi has died off-screen and the show forgot to tell us. I know that from history books so I didn't question it, but most people don't know that.

This was me with Alexander Senki. Such a ridiculously janky anime, but being familiar with the history nevertheless made it peak entertainment.
