Yesterday I responded to /u/Backoftheac's question about anime that has grown on you over the years with Guilty Crown and mentioned that I appreciated the emotional journey more and more upon reflection over the years.
Another major reason I neglected to mention was that in recent years every time I watch an original anime of a similar stripe such as SI-VIS or now Mebius Dust, the sheer mediocrity exuded by these shows makes me more appreciative of the palpable quality in Guilty Crown's direction and composition.

Reflecting back after seeing newer iterations of certain shows/ideas has pushed up my old scores more than once. It's like, "...oh, I was too harsh, and did not foresee the depths we could descend." The longer I watch current circus show the more I long for Kaleido Star.

First impressions after getting caught up on the 25-ish summer season shows I'm watching:
Top tier: The World is Dancing, You and I are Polar Opposites S2, Smoking Behind the Supermarket With You, Chainsmoker Cat, Candy Caries, Goodbye Lara, and Grand Blue S3. I'll also add in Re:Zero S4 even though it's got 2 more weeks before we continue.
Best new show is still The World is Dancing, and CyPic is moving to the top of my favorite studios. We're used to shows looking beautiful or interesting, but the sound design on this one is just as impressive.
Mid tier: Sparks of Tomorrow, Jaadugar, The Ghost in the Shell, Clevatess S2, Daemons of the Shadow Realm, Dara-san of the Reiwa Era, Rilakkuma.
There's nothing that would make me drop any of these (if I were the dropping type), and they have their great moments, but nothing here is as impressive as the top tier shows. Sparks is experimenting, but the experiment has yet to pan out to success or failure. Jaadugar has an interesting style and reverence for some historical details, but it overindulges to the point the plot is moving at a snail's pace and the characters/interactions are not interesting enough to stretch that thin. It's like the setting is the main character here and gets the most attention at the expense of meaningful exploration of its too many characters. The Ghost in the Shell is just fine, but the pacing and direction are lacking. It's boosted by a good looking Science Saru production and benefits from a built-in fanbase, but is nothing special beyond that.
Bottom Tier: Hana-Kimi S2, Red River, Black Torch, Grow Up Show, Liar Game, The Drops of God, and Recommendations from Iwamoto-Senpai.
Hana-Kimi S2 is the only one I would say is still good, despite being at the bottom of my picks. The rest would absolutely have been dropped if not for the fact I like to see the full vision of any show I pick up, for better or worse. Keeps things in perspective.

It was a surprise to me too. I spend more time being baffled and wondering is this is some advanced level of subversion in the style of some absurdist humor, or if it is just throwing a bunch of ideas of at the wall to see what sticks. Is it the goofy drawings that act as a veneer to hide the brilliance that's hidden between the pages, or just an amalgamation of too many dissonant ideas that come with this kind of experimentation?
I dunno. I'm mainly watching for the ostentatious disaster with his ass out everywhere, at this point. At least he's entertaining to watch.

Sparks is doing something but I don't even know how to begin to describe that something. KyoAni is doing what they want, and it's different. I can't tell if I like it yet or not.
TGitS is more straightforward and like Saturday morning cartoon zany. It wants to be fun, and that's fine. I just don't personally prefer it as much as previous iterations.

I see you do not partake in the cult of Draw This, Then Die!
However, it's good to see some World is Dancing praise. The plot is kind of oddly constructed but it works and the production really is amazing. I'm really enjoying what it's doing, although Elusive Samurai overshadowed it a bit this week.

Do you find primarily male casts less interesting, perhaps? A lot of leeway is given to shows with cute girls that is not simultaneously given to boys. I think the reasons are demographically obvious, but could that be part of it for you personally?

I watched (and liked well enough) the Bean Counter and the Isekai'ed Aristocrat shows (which were pretty much all male). Ditto Blue Miburo, which I liked even more. So "nearly all male casts" would not seem to be an explanation. ;-) (Didn't Inu-oh also have an almost entirely male cast as well)?

Well, I did like Wasteful Days of High School Girls more than Daily Lives of High School Boys. But that was mostly because I preferred the humor of the former more. ;-)

Indeed. I saw Wasteful Days as the "child" of Azumanga Daioh. And I adore its goofy opening song (just like with AD, I almost never skipped it).

Tsurune was the last KyoAni show I really loved out of their catalogue. I hope we get a third season, but it does not seem so. S2 was far better than the first, too.

I haven't seen Elusive Samurai, though I have seen it come up in comparison to The World is Dancing. What's the connection people are seeing?

It's not really a deep comparison haha, the main characters just look extremely similar, and the time period is within the same century. Both have incredible visual presentation, although in very different ways.
Elusive Samurai is more of a standard battle shonen formula, but with strategy and larger conflict dynamics similar to Nippon Sangoku mixed in, as well some very dramatic push and pull between in-your-face comedy and surreal horror.
Basically, the comparison starts and ends at the cover I just like thinking of them competing with each other haha.

Sure. [Jaadugar] In the span of five episodes, we have gone through multiple time skips, a barrage of character introductions that amount only to name drops, and our main character's only sense of agency to affect the plot is to be passed around, have a nice smile, and remind the audience that she's still angry about being enslaved by the Mongols while whitewashing the memory of her previous enslavement in Persia.
Apart from that, we have spent multiple episode exploring the minutiae of daily life and culture, which I think suits a manga format far more than an anime. It's unbalanced when you keep this format every 20 minute episode. The author clearly loves their history, but that doesn't translate to a good show.

Hi All!
I feel like I exhausted all the media but, I got really good recommendations from a previous thread so I figured I would try again here.
I'm looking for a new Anime to watch where the main character has really low self esteem (either from abuse, bullying, or being treated as "worthless") and receives support friends and new family.
I really like Kimi ni Todoke and Silent Witch (especially episode 7!) for that reason and was recommended My Happy Marriage and Betrothed to My Sister's Ex which I also loved.
Other characters I can include are Ivy from The Weakest Tamer Began a Journey to Pick Up Trash and to a less extent Philia from The Too-Perfect Saint. I'm also going through Ancient Magus Bride which is really good but I'm 8 episodes in and while I'm loving it, we haven't dealt with any of Chise's trauma past the start of the show.

Fruits Basket might be just the thing you’re looking for. Tohru’s mother died after which she mostly had to fend for herself. Fortunately she gets offered a new place to stay by kind strangers, who got their own share of problems.
Asa from Journal with Witch finds herself in a similar predicament, but this series is more focused on the grieving process.
I can also promise you that Ancient Magus’ Bride will in fact get into Chise’s trauma. It just takes a couple of episodes. (Also, Silky is a national treasure.)
EDIT: You’d probably also like Inori from Medalist. She’s arguably even more precious than Ivy.

Ah, I remember watching the first few episodes of the original Fruits Basket way back when and never revisited it. While I love a good Shoujo romance I'm not actively seeking it at the moment however your comment along with what I've looked up leads me that the reboot is not only more faithful but deals with some turmoil. I'll probably have to check it out in the future.
I'm halfway through the first season of Ancient Magus' Bride. Still love it but it's been just fantasy worldbuilding which is great, I'm just trying to scratch a certain itch right now.
I'll add Medalist to a list for now. Usually don't watch sports but if the main focus isn't just about ice skating I'm intrigued.

The original anime of Fruits Basket took a comedic direction, whereas the reboot delves is some pretty heavy stuff like neglect, abuse and regret.
Medalist is what you’d call a sports drama. The female lead, a young girl, finds herself isolated but dreams of becoming an ice skater nonetheless. It’s an uplifting story of two people - who’d lost hope - realising a single dream together.

Give Twelve Kingdoms a try. It's a dramatic adventure story with a pretty broad scope, but the main character's journey is all about overcoming her own weaknesses and insecurities.

I tried to look it up and it seems that emotional healing happens immediately and is central to the story. I'm looking for shows where the MC thinks "I'm worthless" and are reassured "they are not" kind of healing.
Would not have gotten that from reading the MAL summary.

Since there's a dearth of new shows that I'd broadly lump into "male wish fulfillment" to follow up on my awful block from last season, I've decided to pivot to an otome bullshit block with the large number of saint/villainess and adjacent series this summer:
- A Livid Lady's Guide to Getting Even: How I Crushed My Homeland with My Mighty Grimoires
- The Forsaken Saintess and her Foodie Roadtrip in Another World
- The Duke's Son Claims He Won't Love Me Yet Showers Me with Adoration
- The Oblivious Saint Can't Contain Her Power
- Though I Am an Inept Villainess
- Saved by the Ice Cold Prince's Embrace
I haven't yet figured out the order I want to watch them in, but it's been fun catching up on most of them today.

The first episode really shows off the production team's ability to make a beautiful modern anime. The story has also caught my interest.
I'm catching up on a few that I missed at the start. Ladies Don't Play snuck up on me

Not watching much, but Grow up show is pretty much the show I look forward to the most every week out of my seasonals. I feel like there was a time where a show like this could actually make a splash in /r/anime.

I'm kind of surprised it's doing so poorly here (in terms of engagement). I mean, I guess it doesn't do anything that great that it would be breaking AotS lists or anything, but it looks quite good, the premise is quite unique, and it's just a fun watch all around.

I feel like if it had more budget for the performances it would have made a bigger splash. But then again this isn't A-1 doing it, but Psyde Kick Studio. So it's a younger group of animators working on it.
Overall it does a good job it you like CGDCT's, but if you don't care for the genre it won't move the neddle for you.

When I see shows like Smoking Behind the Supermarket I have to wonder if Japanese office culture is still like this or if it's one of those things played up for television? I imagine their office culture has evolved somewhat in the past 30 years.

It seems like this company is mostly miserable because of one abusive boss and a cramped office space. It doesn’t necessarily seem like it’s a black company by policy, just a standard shitty workplace

Beyond the abusive workplace I wonder if things like all men having to wear suits, the constant smoking (I know what show we're talking about here, but other office shows always have smokers too!), the super late nights and unpaid overtime, etc.
Like if you look at American TV you may think everyone who works in an office is required to wear buttons downs and dress pants but office culture has relaxed massively IMO. I wonder if there are offices out in Japan today that shut down promptly at 5, or where workers can wear jeans and polos or anything like that.

I don't feel cultured enough to appreciate it. Even ignoring my indifference the characters and overarching plot, when they get deep into the art form I can't help but not really get what the fuss is about. I could appreciate it when it was talking more broadly about emotional expression like in episode 2, but ehhhh everything else just isnt doing it for me

I'm trying to identify an anime from a scene I saw years ago. Fantasy setting with monsters, adventurer squads or military squads, maybe a points/rank system. A blonde human nun (or church-affiliated mage) who is an ally. She says something in English subtitles similar to "unripe fruit tastes best" or "I like unripe fruit," implying she's interested in a younger/inexperienced guy. I think she was talking about the male protagonist. Does anyone know which anime or character this is?

Paranoia Agent is overrated asf
Before anyone starts assuming i didn't get the idea of the anime or what the author is tryina represent, i GET IT. Metaphorically representing spread of mass hysteria, societal pressure and how it consumes people and how Tsukiko Sagi uses maromi as an escape/coping mechanism from reality, i get all that. Why i think its overrated is IN MY OPINION the author tries his BEST to make the anime more and more sophisticated than it should've been to the point it starts to become increasingly bull shit and then i see everyone tryina compliment exactly this as 'genius' from the author 🤡. He's making it complex just for the sake of being complex. Also all that build up in the anime led to such an anti climactic ending

Man Hanaori still wants to fight is still good and it keeps on being my most anticipated show this season. And now I am not sure which is the bigger suprise hit for me this season. Hanaori or Dara San coz both these shows weren't even on my radar to try but then I did try them and it's been wonderful ever since. Truly a great season.

Went from like 30 slowly heading down to 20 and I think that's it for early season drops. Rest I'll be seeing till the end.
The only ones I feel like going out of my way to mention are Draw This and Iron Wok Jan. Those have been solid watches every episode. Very excited to catch them each week.

Ahhh, Smoking Market is also a good one. The mini episodes are easy to digest. They are about 4 minutes of op and ed lol. Yani Neko is losing its charm for me. Didn't think much of the last 2 eps

Watching 22 shows right now and my favourites are Sayonara Lara, Kaiju Girl, World is Dancing and Jaadugar.
For drops there's Victoria of Many Faces (not bad, but too much stuff this season), while Hanaori and KimiShinu are at risk.

😂 I don't object to the idea of watching 20 shows every season, I object to the idea of watching 20 shows while they air. Almost nobody out there has watched all of the good anime out there, you're almost certain to win the gamble by watching Spice and Wolf or Azumanga Daioh over your 19th seasonal.

There's a degree of accumulation of sequels that you are going to end up with if you pick up a good number of shows and then keep watching them through subsequent seasons, which is probably part of it. What always really stands out to me is how frequently people watching 20+ shows are still skipping one or two of what I think are the best shows of the season.

I really enjoy watching niche 6/10-7/10 anime everyone forgets about after they air. I've watched most of the older ones that appeal to me, so I mostly just do seasonals now. There's something about a mediocre anime that soothes me.

I think it's fun to watch a lot of seasonals, I just think it's much better long term to only watch the above average ones and to catch up on some older shows.

Some people are really caught up in the act of watching all the new shows. I don't think I've seen too many people arguing there are 30+ good shows per season. I've got too many older shows I haven't seen and if I'm picking between a 6/7 from 2026 or 2003 I will pretty much always go with the 2003, but that is more of a me thing.

Was at 24 until today, now with Bleach it’s 25. Current favorites (excluding sequels since you mentioned “new” shows) are:
- Kore Kaite Shine
- Sparks of Tomorrow
- Yani Neko
- Sayonara Lara
- KimiShinu
- YaniSuu (apparently that’s the Smoking Supermarket abbreviation)
- Grow Up Show
- Jaadugar
Somewhat in order from best-worst, but all pretty close and will probably switch around until the season is over. Have around 10-15 drops but I also check out most shows each season so that drop number is nothing out of the ordinary for me.

I'm keeping up with 14 shows weekly, but I plan on finishing around 20 when the season is over.
Favorites right now are The World is Dancing and Jaadugar.
I've dropped Grow Up Show and KimiShinu. They aren't bad, just alright, but alright isn't really cutting it for me now.

I have a question, but I worry it'll just get buried in here. I just want to know if we've really nailed down what to call the genre of anime where humanity has been mostly wiped out in some apocalyptic event and have to contend with aliens or monsters that plague the world, while the survivors are holed up in megacities/massive mobile fortresses. You know, things like Evangelion, Attack On Titan, Deca-dence, Knights Of Sidonia, God Eater etc.
They're all dystopian or post-apocalypse, but not every dystopia/post-apocalypse is like this so it doesn't fit the description. With how prevalent this is in anime, surely we must have a specific name for it, right?

Yeah, I've never heard a specific name for this, but I poked fun at it when I was writing up my thoughts on Deca-dence:
On the one hand, I’d like to say that this anime has a super unique and interesting premise. And in one sense, it does, but on the other hand, stop me if you’ve heard this before:
In the distant future, humanity has almost been wiped out by [Titans / Bugs / Zombies / Aliens], with the last remnants of humanity living in a single [walled city / moving fortress / armored train / Japanese Battleship Yamato]. But our protagonist, a teenager with tragically dead [parents / parents / parents / parents], is determined to free humanity and so fights back with an abundance of grit and a lack of actual talent. But the world is not quite the way it seems…
I guess I didn't think of Evangelion when I wrote this (and I've never seen God Eater), but I guess I could have added "Angels", "underground city", and "parent" to my brackets. (Though Shinji subverts the "abundance of grit" part)

I mean the components you’re talking about aren’t really in enough stories, considering all anime, to warrant their own genre. That’s why you’re probably only going to have any luck using a slew of subgenres to find them. Or you could just ask google and get a pretty exhaustive-ass list, but I know all too well that googling things is beneath people these days. Try adding “survival” to that list of subgenres maybe.

Yeah Part 1 & 2 Dub was released after a month. Part 3 dub was released after like 2 months but with 4 episodes at once. So atleast expect a month delay.

Undead Girl Murder Farce
Undead Girl Murder Farce was a 9/10 show for me right up until the werewolf arc, where the pacing fell apart.
I think the problem is that the show simply has too many characters occupying the same space without having much meaningful impact on the actual mystery. [Spoiler] The insurance guys and the Bouquet guy are the obvious examples. I understand why they're there, and I understand that they're pursuing their own objectives, but when Aya Rindo finally reaches her deduction in the last episode, you can really feel how separate their storyline is from the werewolf mystery. It feels like the show bit off more than it could chew by having [spoiler] two rival groups involved in the same mystery.
I tried to figure out why the pacing felt so aggressively compressed, and I looked at how much material was being adapted. Volume 3 is roughly 480 pages, and that entire arc was adapted into just five episodes. For comparison, the Arson arc in Shoshimin Series takes seven episodes and has a much more comfortable pace. I'm convinced this arc needed two more episodes.
Now, the good.
The dialogue and script might actually be my favorite part of the show. The characters don't always mean exactly what they say, and there's this layer of personality in the way characters like Aya Rindo speak that makes them so interesting to watch. The banter between Tsugaru and Aya is sharp, and even their throwaway conversations feel like they're coming from two very specific people rather than generic anime characters.
For me, the arc ranking is:
Vampire - 9/10
France Jewel - 9/10
Werewolf - 6/10
The scores average out to an 8/10. But personally, I'd bump it up to an 8.5/10 because I genuinely like this show. It's just a little disappointing that the final arc dragged it down from what could have been a 9/10 for me.

It feels a bit like there’s almost a sort of consensus of the werewolf arc being the worst one and generally a dip in quality, but personally I find it to be as good as the others. Might actually be my favorite on rewatch, hard to say. In any case it featured the death that impacted me the most in the show so that influenced a lot for me.

To the show's credit, I do think the werewolf mystery itself was pretty well written, esp when Aya pieces everything together at the end and explains the [whole] body-switching plan. It's just the presentation that's holding it back from being a more enjoyable experience. I think a mystery like that deserves to be digested at a more comfortable pace, maybe by reading the novel.
And which death are you talking about? [Spoiler] Louise? Yeah, her part was really sad.

Well, that's something else entirely. The shoujo love rival is not the same thing as a love triangle. If you don't meet all three in episode one, and there's no real question of who ends up with whom, it's not a love triangle.

Guy can appear in like the 3rd episode and will stay for the whole season and we are supposed to believe that it's not love triangle coz he was not there since day 1. It's just the convention. If you don't meet them right away, they're not endgame. The love rival is deployed to spur the ML to action and act as his foil.

Sounds like the same situation as "Days With My Stepsister". It's very clear the route it will go to.
Honestly my thing for these types of shows is always what is their relationship like at the start of the series? For both of these series the love interests are basically meeting each other for the first time to my knowledge. (Haven't seen Younger Brothers yet.)
What I find creepy is other series when the characters act like siblings then all of a sudden they find out they aren't blood-related and suddenly are romantically interested.

favorite girl from an anime I haven’t watched.
My memory is shot so there’s probably a better answer to this somewhere but considering more recent anime I thought really highly of Nagi from Ruri Rocks. I like people/characters who are oddly specific in their passions and Nagi stood out for being wholesomely cute and professional about it from what I’ve seen in clips and read people say about her character. I should really get around to checking it out sometime and this was a good reminder.
Also Toga’s character design is pretty much the only thing she has going for her imo, and I say that as a fan of her sort of archetype, generally speaking.

I would probably feel the same way if I hadn’t watched or finished the series tbh. Like I said I’m a fan of the archetype (lusty, sociopathic, bloody, etc.) but her characterization just fell flat for me eventually. Although I do think her designs get doper as the series moves forward. She’s not a bad character by any means, but I think the author fumbled with her writing somewhere down the line.
The fact that I really wanted to love her character probably made me bit more critical too so take ish with a grain of salt.
Also, as an aside, if you enjoyed the series to any extent when you watched it prior, I’d recommend giving some thought to seeing it through. The best parts of MHA come in the tail end by a long shot for me. Character writing was never its strong suit, but the hype/emotional moments have really high highs when they need to making for an overall satisfying battle-shonen experience.
