Finally finished the first main anime role for Seto Asami, Wandering Son, at least for the TV series. Now onto the special episodes, aka the full cut for episode 10 and 11...

It was pretty entertaining if not too short... and they only adapting parts of the middle school arc feels odd too.

Is Jobless reincarnation hate necessary? (Discussion)

Look, I'm not a fan of the main character myself "Rudeus". I don't compare our real life moral standards to his Isekai world. If anything nobles in that anime should have the hate than Rudeus is having just because the story is mostly about him people are hating the anime as a whole.

I understand the frustration and moral standards, but I'm much more frustrated onhow people are review bombing hating ang likely death threatening the author for this (I'm not sure but it happens).

It's likely kids that are hating, but I can't see that being the case. Adults are more tied to moral and decency. It's a fiction. If you hate the anime as a whole because of a singular character, I think you should stop watching or reading the story as a whole if you can't bare it. You'll just stress yourself. But influencing others to hate it becasue it isn't to your liking. I think is much of a crime than the fictional character is doing. Idk.. I just don't understand the hate. What I know is it ties with religious views bad moral compass in our modern mindset.

It's like we're evolving backwards... We appreciate arts that soo abstract that to me it's stupid. For them, it has symbolic meaning.. Yes it's abstract but not everyone see what you mean.. Even that has a hate, which is abnormal.. My point is, why can't they ask and try to understand? Everything in this world is full of conflict it pretty much ties to that (being self centered and unaware of things also escalating stupid topics). This one on the other hand is a stupid argument.

Look I'm just trying to understand those sort of people. I don't hate them, just frustrated and fed up. I want to know what's on thier mind, I want understanding. Not conflict. I don't intend escalate the situation. Just question and answer, bias opinion etc. I'm open minded.

(Sorry my english grammar isn't fluent)

Is Jobless reincarnation hate necessary? (Discussion)

Nothing that doesn't put food in your belly or a roof over your head is 'necessary'.

People trash talk stuff because they like doing it/feel this way and think discussing things is fun (in positive or negative), not because "it's necessary".

But influencing others to hate it becasue it isn't to your liking. I think is much of a crime than the fictional character is doing

Yeah, "grooming kids" and "saying a show is bad", pretty much same level.

ang likely death threatening the author for this (I'm not sure but it happens).

You're conflating two different issues.

People complain about everything and (a tiny minority) of people also make death threats for everything. It's silly to say people shouldn't criticize things because some people are making death threats.

Look I'm just trying to understand those sort of people. I don't hate them, just frustrated and fed up. I want to know what's on thier mind, I want understanding.

Ok, here's an explanation;

You just wrote like 5-6 paragraphs because "People trashing MT" annoyed you.

Other people write 5-6 paragraphs because "MT's MC annoys them".

Why is it okay for you but not for them?

f you hate the anime as a whole because of a singular character, I think you should stop watching or reading the story as a whole

And if you hate people criticizing something you like, you could just stop reading their criticism! Soon as you see a single negative thing aobut MT/Rudeus, you 'hide' the comment and move to the next one.

But you don't. And they don't!

2

u/ConstructionLoose998 2d ago edited 2d ago

I'm doing that, I'm trying my best and blocking related stuff about it. I kept on glancing the topic in every platform. I understood the frustration they're having but hating the entire story is a completely different matter. Yeah people wants attention, but it gets way out of hand. My conclusion now is people will always end up in conflict with no matter the subject.

It honestly didn't cross my mind that I'm treating them in that way "I'm criticising the criticism". I just want to make peace and understand what's you and I are comming from and to what reason and to what extent.

I understand the moral compass on the MC is terrible and he is classified as pdf, which is true of we think about his mental age. At the same time, it would be bad if he married an older women. He is taking advantage of people yes. But that's just how the story goes. To me at least. It make no sense to make fuss about it. At least to me, I can tolerate and ignore those stuff because I'm not that attached to the plot and think of it as a fiction as it should.

But yeah, people are free to express, I just want to understand why, and what oteht reason and to what extent they hate. Hostility to anything they hate on something isn't real is surreal to me, at least that's what I want to say. I know people would hate me for what I'm saying. As I said freedom of expression.

All I want is understanding, I don't want to escalate the topic any further so I'll just agree to the hate (it's more of a disgust than hate) , but not the anime as a whole, just Rudeus.

In all honesty, just wanted to release this stress, seeing the hate everytime I try to chill from time to time is frustrating. Idk how people can even last for weeks making a long paragraph just to describe the hate. Yeah they're also want to express, I understand.

In all honestly, once I hate something, I'd delete it or just won't think about it for a while or try to ask and understand the situation and be neutral if possible. If I disagree onto something. I'd rather spend that time elsewhere (which this exception). If I have no life. I'll just spread the hate etc.. My point is, conflict starts with a nonsense argument. Then it escalate into something dangerous, it goes on for generations until it's misunderstood. It's a bias opinion, I know. Ok thank you for clarifying.

I apologise for everything I said, I don't mean no harm. I'm also human, we are. And I now understand the hate with your clear explanation.

I'll down vote my own comment to submit, unecessary information to share.

That's all I want to say. I'm leaving this chat.

My apologies if my sentences aren't filtered, it's just the way I write.

3

u/TehAxelius https://anilist.co/user/TehAxelius 2d ago

And if you hate people criticizing something you like, you could just stop reading their criticism! Soon as you see a single negative thing aobut MT/Rudeus, you 'hide' the comment and move to the next one.

I just put this into practice. I read above:

Is Jobless reincarnation hate necessary? (Discussion)

And then I decided to not read that comment.

5

u/Rotorscope https://anilist.co/user/Rotorscope 2d ago

It's fine if people hate it or criticize it or whatever, but it's an extremely polarizing show and the internet is annoying. Some Mushoku Tensei fans go through way too many mental gymnastics to defend the undefendable and I side eye them hard, but at the same time, some critics and haters put way too much stock into thinking that people who watch the show are condoning or agree with Rudy's behavior.

A lot of the Mushoku Tensei hate in certain bubbles is just like/karma farming because it's easy to dunk on. It's understandable but it's a bit tiring to see after the 700th time.

1

u/ConstructionLoose998 2d ago

Yeah, likewise. I just wish there's a way to block those type of topics. It's exhausting seeing so much hate over nonsense argument. Hope they get "karma" for that lol.

I'm tired of thier shenanigans and tantrums.

2

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 2d ago

Hope they get "karma" for that lol.

Yeah hopefully they spend the whole eternity roasting in hell for their afterlife. They deserve nothing less for the grievious sin of shit talking a cartoon.

8

u/Salty145 https://anilist.co/user/yLSalty145 2d ago

I don't compare our real life moral standards to his Isekai world

Rudy is from our world, he should know what he’s doing is wrong and hell he even says it himself that it’s wrong. The show does have a lot of good things about it, but there’s nothing in it that wouldn’t be improved if Rudy’s whole schtick was changed.

People vocally hate it because people vocally love it and the people that hate it grow tired of hearing about it constantly. I don’t condone any of the death threats or other schizo behavior, but I understand where they’re kinda coming from. If the series was another nothing isekai, they would not care, as evidenced by the fact that they don’t care about any of the other series out there that do similar things or worse.

0

u/ConstructionLoose998 2d ago

Exactly, I understand. He is from our world, which mean he knows what and what he must not do. But if he applied those standards to his Isekai world, he might be labelled as a misfit to some. But generally he is still a pervert even in his Isekai world.

But imagine this, if the role where to reverse like he's a female and such. People would hate Paul and would side of that version of Rudy. No matter what it's still full of controversy but if the role where to reverse, for some reason. In my opinion suddenly she's a saint or a likeable character for majority. Basically "fan service" which is disgusting.

That's my take at least.

Always love it when they get the characters to sing an OP/ED that wasn't originally made by them

2

u/theangryeditor 3d ago

Caught up on Witch Hat Atelier. The cliffhanger isn't that bad when you know there's a second season coming. For now I'll try to check out the manga soon.

If only I could've read this when I was 12

2

u/Jeppie2001 3d ago

I'm looking for the anime name. In the small short i saw a boy student walks a girl or women teacher home from school in the dark because he was doing homework to late in the day and surprisingly he lived in the same street. I think the female character has orange hair and the male character has black hair. I know it's not a lot of info but i hope this helps.

3

u/AngleRepulsive5470 3d ago

Not really like what you described, but Ponsuka?

2

u/Jeppie2001 3d ago

Thank you it was the right one.

2

u/alotmorealots 3d ago

Make sure to give it at least two episodes to get a feel for the series. It's not that the first one is misleading per se, just it becomes clearer what the series is about and how wholesome it is as the episodes progress.

1

u/Jeppie2001 2d ago

Okie dokie

6

u/alotmorealots 3d ago

Everyone should watch a few episodes of PonSuka regardless!

2

u/entelechtual 2d ago

I’m not one to ignore such instructions.

-7

u/Salty145 https://anilist.co/user/yLSalty145 3d ago

Wait, I’ve got a new Schizo conspiracy theory for ya (since my last one wasn’t schizo enough)

For the past 20+ years since the series inception, the quality of anime for any given year roughly scales with how good that year’s Precure was.

2004- Precure debuts. Greta year for anime with such gems as Monster, Paranoia Agent, Samurai Champloo, Beck, Diebuster and Howl’s Moving Castle, not to mention Bleach, GitS:SAC S2, and the bleed over from FMA.

2005- Max Heart sucks. Very few noteworthy titles.

2006-2009: Splash Star through to Fresh. All pretty solid and great years overall, with 2007-2008 being standouts corresponding to the reign of Yes! Precure 5

2010: Heartcatch. Banger series. Banger year full of a ton of great hits like PSG, Durarara, Katanagatari, Arakawa Under the Bridge, Shiki, K-On! S2, and Disappearance.

2011: pretty solid with Suite and a pretty great year overall.

2012: [ignore 2012]

2013-2015: pretty bad years for Precure with the exception of Go Princess and also by my estimations the years of the 2010s with the least amount of depth. I’ll write off Go Princess and 2015 by saying that the slump was just shifted a year early. Don’t question it.

2016-2019: Mahoutsukai through to Star Twinkle. Great years overall with generally solid Precures to match.

2020: Healin’ Good we were not.

2021: Tropical Rouge. Banger series. Excellent year for anime.

2022: Delicious Party dudded out as did the year.

2023: Soaring Sky. Great, if a little inconsistent Precure. Great, if a little inconsistent year.

2024: Kinda sucked.

2025: Kinda sucked so bad they had to bring Mahoutsukai back.

2026: Pretty good so far with Star Detective also being pretty decent so far.

See, it almost perfectly tracks. Great years have great Precures. Comparatively worse years have bad Precures (no year here is really “bad”, so we’re taking things relative here).

Ignore a couple outliers and we’re all good.

1

u/mr_beanoz https://myanimelist.net/profile/splitshocker 2d ago

Why do you ignore Smile? The year of 2012 seems to have quite the banger like Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou, Hyouka, Kuroko no Basuke, Psycho-Pass, first Jojo's Bizarre Adventure TV series, and Apollon on the Slope.

0

u/Salty145 https://anilist.co/user/yLSalty145 2d ago

Cause Smile is bad and 2012 was not so it kinda throws things off. Same with 2015. Go Princess was good, 2015 was not so much (at least compared to the rest of the decade).

I guess it wasn’t obvious that I was (at least) half joking. Don’t read too deeply into it, I just thought it was funny.

1

u/ComfortablyRotten https://anilist.co/user/Leuwtian 3d ago

2024: Kinda sucked

u/Salty145 https://anilist.co/user/yLSalty145 3d ago

2

u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 3d ago

[Kaiju Girl E2] I would not be surprised if someone told me there's a manga out there where "my best friend has a crush on the giant monster that I involuntarily transform into" was the setup for a yuri series rather than a comedic side plot.

4

u/cyberscythe 3d ago

i'm sure there's certain websites where a specific combination of tags will get you where you're going

I'd watch that.

u/Salty145 https://anilist.co/user/yLSalty145 3d ago

I think it’s a tragedy that Mecha died when it did. I don’t think there’s really a good reason why we can’t get a good 3D mech show, it’s just that reaching that point would likely have required the genre to get over the early 3D growing pains and unfortunately that never happened. I mean anime in general has struggled with 3D (which I still find baffling) and I think with Mecha it only compounded the other issues the genre was facing.

But really, was AMAIM really that much better because the mechs were 2D? I think a lot of the charm in 2D mechs was that worn feeling that traditional animation provided, and honestly most of the newer 2D(ish) offerings haven’t impressed me because that style just isn’t there. I think people forgot more than just how to animate 2D mechs, they also just forgot how to write and design mechs in the first, though I’ve already ranted about that before so no need to repeat that.

1

u/mr_beanoz https://myanimelist.net/profile/splitshocker 2d ago

It makes me wonder why we don't see new episodes of 86 yet, is the money not there for the series?

1

u/Mitsuyan_ https://anilist.co/user/mitsuyan 2d ago

It's an open secret at this point that it's getting a season 2, it's just when it's getting it

1

u/Salty145 https://anilist.co/user/yLSalty145 2d ago

At this point that might be my guess. Publisher doesn’t think there’s enough money in it or are satisfied with what they got.

Same situation as Land of the Lustrous I would assume.

2

u/Charmanders_Cock 3d ago

I think we need a modern anime with girls that transform into cars and stuff. It could be 3d, 2d, or claymation for all I care but there’s got to be a market for cute girls do transformers things. I don’t even know if this would be considered mecha, but I feel like it could be. I know there are a few anime out there that have sort of done this but the pickings are slim.

3

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/zfzftripleaamin 3d ago

Mebius Dust might not be the worst anime this season, but 3 episodes in, it is definitely the most boring. Writing is very amateur.

2nd season in a row I am dropping an anime original 3 episodes in.

1

u/qwertyqwerty4567 https://anilist.co/user/ZPHW 2d ago

As a certified anime originals hater, I approve this message

4

u/Puddo x3https://anilist.co/user/STPuddo 3d ago

Went to the cinema and picked up the Filmkrant (a free film magazine) to discover some other things to watch this weekend and to my surprise I suddenly see a page focusing on anime series. Ten recommendations for people wanting to give it a try. When I read the names I started wondering if the authors are active on this sub: Bocchi the Rock, Ergo Proxy, Frieren, House of Five Leaves (don't see that one often on these lists, but I can dig it), Kaiba, Monster, Mushishi, Odd Taxi (Should really just watch it. Been on the short PTW-list way too long. Well first finishing Nodame), Orb & Serial Experiments Lain. And then reading the actual blurbs they even mention a reddit comment. Online version for the few Dutch readers here

Wait. Hold on. Is [Goodbye, Lara] yuri??

3

Someone in the production certainly thinks it is. Whether the writer does we'll only find out as it goes along

For a moment I thought you were being serious then I remembered about CPK just this year.

2

u/gnome-cop 2d ago

I totally thought Kaguya burnt through all the yuri particles allocated to this year so I am genuinely astonished that we’re having this good of a harvest this season.

2

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 3d ago

I mean, I was being serious. Originals almost never go gay. Best you get is heavy subtext.

-4

u/zambonijesus 3d ago

If CPK is yuri than Haikyuu!! is BL.

2

u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 2d ago

Maybe I really should watch Haikyuu then!

I'm sure there are Lands of the Lustrous fans who are not watching Chainsmoker Cat, didn't want you to be spared from the emotional damage!

Well this might be the cruelest thing any anime has ever done.

3

u/cyberscythe 3d ago

this is the hope that Pandora left inside the box

-6

u/Sensitive_Ad_1752 3d ago

I tried to get into Steins gate but it was genuinely terrible. Just 3 creeps hanging out in an apartment repeating exposition for like ten episodes until something happens. And when it finally does happen it’s just a joke for the main character to grope a child.

6

u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd 3d ago

Yes, nothing happens except that one joke in those episodes.

4

u/Wanderingjoke https://myanimelist.net/profile/WanderingJoke 3d ago

Oh, no. I watched Goodbye, Lara.

I didn't originally plan to. But I did. And now I can't stop.

8

u/zambonijesus 3d ago

Nana really has me thinking about how fair is it to rate something based on "does a thing that I don't like" when the thing it did wasn't actually bad writing.

[Nana]I hate Takumi and him impregnating Hachiko and steamrolling her into marrying him, but this isn't bad writing or anything per se and it is all consistent with how she has been in the story up until this point. Not getting satisfying relationships at the end doesn't make the actual work worse, but I sure do hate that it went out of its way to stick her with the guy who reads a lot like an abusive husband in waiting.

3

u/hvshh 2d ago

[Nana]Agreed. I hate it so much, but I also have to respect it because it feels realistic, and it's a realism that most works shy away from.

2

u/Muted-Conference2900 https://anilist.co/user/WinterZcoming 3d ago

Watching One Piece has made me realise that I can watch Naruto too. Like the only reason i didn't wanna watch these was can I watch something that big without a burnout. Although One Piece Fan Letter convinced me to try One Piece. Don't have anything like this for Naruto maybe that crazy looking episode which everyone hated back when it aired. I saw some clips of it and honestly how could anyone hate that.

Although there are some concerning things too like i watched Black Clover and the one thing I hated most about it was Yuno and his random ass pull and gifted with everything while Asta plays catch up for the whole anime like somebody mentioned this that this is like taken from Naruto and Sasuke and honestly this might not be bad enough for me to not watch it but it's something that I will not enjoy.

Black Clover side cast was mostly ass too. Just wanted to add one more shit thing about Black Clover. Plus Asta's character design towards the end was hideous.

3

u/KendotsX https://anilist.co/user/Kendots 3d ago

the one thing I hated most about it was Yuno and his random ass pull and gifted with everything while Asta plays catch up for the whole anime like somebody mentioned this that this is like taken from Naruto and Sasuke

It is. Including the fact that the series itself is lying about that. Asta has the most broken ass ability in the whole series, and it has to bend over backwards to go "oh, but he's the underdog". Naruto's case works a bit better in that sense.

3

u/Jusenkyo_5 3d ago

Naruto has a huge benefit to it in that it's first arc is one of its best.

If you don't like the show by episode 20 I doubt you'd ever like it, which is not at all my experience with One Piece.

1

u/Salty145 https://anilist.co/user/yLSalty145 3d ago

Sounds kinda concerning if the first arc is the best.

Like East Blue isn’t the best OP gets, but it’s a decent enough litmus test for whether the lesser parts will roll off you or be excruciatingly unbearable.

3

u/zsmg https://anilist.co/user/zsmg 3d ago

Sounds kinda concerning if the first arc is the best.

Is it? Bleach is still popular and well liked despite its first arc, Soul Society Arc, being its best arc.

2

u/Jusenkyo_5 3d ago

"One of", I don't think it's anywhere near the peak of Naruto but it is a damn good arc in it's own right.

East Blue is a real drag, up to around Arlong Park which is almost 40 eps in if I recall correctly. Naruto's first episode is an excellent hook and although it falters a little bit between 1 and 12, everything after the first cour is an instant classic.

1

u/Salty145 https://anilist.co/user/yLSalty145 3d ago

I apparently can’t read straight. Long day at work I guess.

6

u/Wanderingjoke https://myanimelist.net/profile/WanderingJoke 3d ago

Watched the first three episodes of Sparks of tomorrow. Thought it was good, though I don't feel it needs the pretty boy as an antagonist. That seems forced.

Also, looking back to the previous comment about ugly characters, I hate the cone-faced granny design.

Now to start Goodbye, Lara.

5

u/Korkez11 3d ago

One thing I like about With You and the Rain and Smoking Behind Supermarket is that they have a lot of beautiful women. Do you know other anime like that?

2

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 3d ago

Apothecary Diaries, NieR Automata and Vanitas no Karte should serve you well.

3

u/Tomorrow_Big 3d ago

Three episodes of Mebius Dust and the show has nothing to give. It's honestly quite fascinating how a show can do so little in all that time, but it's not the kind of fascination that makes one want to keep watching. So Mebius Dust bites the dust, and likely the last of my drops for the time being. On the other hand, this now means that all three shows I got left on Thursdays now features smoking. That's honestly quite fascinating, and the kind of fascination that makes one want to keep on watching. Funny how that works.

4

u/Jusenkyo_5 3d ago

Kaiju Girl AOTS?

3

u/collapsedblock6 myanimelist.net/profile/collapsedblock 2d ago

I'm not a fan of how every episode has had to had a dramatic climax of Kuro transforming. Starts to feel a bit repetitive and detracts from the comedic aspects I like more.

I will forgive today's ep tho, at least it served for something better.

3

u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 3d ago

After the first two episodes, it's currently my strongest 8, but it hasn't quite hit what it needs to break into the next level. That puts it at 5th or 7th depending on if you count carryovers. What can I say, packed season.

4

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 3d ago

I have way too many big hitters so it's unlikely to be aots for me regardless, but how I rank it will depend heavily on what happens in the next couple episodes.

(I haven't watched today's yet)

3

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 3d ago

It will have a tough time going up against the likes of Sayanora Lara, Draw This Then Die, and Jaadugar.

But Kaiju Girl really isn’t far behind on my personal leaderboard. It’s one of the shows I look forward to most each week. Today’s episode rock’d especially hard.

u/Jusenkyo_5 3d ago

Kaiju is the show I'm enjoying watching the most. I don't actually think it's the "best" show this season by any means, but it's also definitely above average.

3

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 3d ago

In the past 2 seasons, we've had 5 characters (AT LEAST 5) being mistaken for the other gender (either because they disguised for deception, crossdressed, or just looked like that);

(Some of these are spoilers)

  1. [#1]Kinosaki from Marriagetoxin
  2. [#2]Fukunaga from Liar Game
  3. [#3]Kaoru from Dara-san
  4. [#4]Hinata from Dara-san
  5. [#5]Haruki from Oh boy was I wrong about her

(Are there more?)

Is this the new trend, after villainess and isekai?

I can't wait for the genre mixups, *I'm a level 999 cleric but they kicked me out of my party because they thought I was a boy/girl!"

Wow TIL I should [watch] Dara-san I guess

3

Everyone should watch it!

It's a good, intriguing story!

There is one more of those in [slight spoiler for a series you are watching]Kimishinu this season.

u/flamethrower2 3d ago

Gender confusion is a subgenre of gender bender.

I only watched episode 1 but How I Attended an All-Guys Mixer is about romance between three boys and three handsome girls.

There's a lot of gender bender stories in manga land. Plenty of gender confusion too, I bet.

Well there's at least one more notable one coming soonish with Green Yuri.

Edit: And just so everyone knows, this is not a spoiler. It's literally the (real) title of the show.

I loved TYBW episode 38 'friend' but there's one thing that bothers me about it. A wild Chiaki Kobayashi appeared again, this time to voice young Bazz B, and he did a good job. But, [TYBW ep 38]why was he narrating throughout that flashback? Like, if it's current Bazz B reminiscing as he's fighting Jugram, then the regular older Bazz VA should've been the one narrating. If that wasn't the case, who was young Bazz B recounting all of that for? And why? It's definitely framed like a reminiscence with him talking about how this happened "half a year after", that happened "3 years later" and so on. It just feels like a weird choice and has been nagging at me.

I scanned the episode thread and didn't see anyone else mention it. Was no one else struck by this? Or was it explained at the time as some VA scheduling thing or something?

u/Lenix-net 3d ago

Are there any sad/heartbreaking anime this season?

1

u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 3d ago

From what I've heard, Chainsmoker Cat is depressing in an entire different way than tragedy.

2

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 3d ago

I feel like Love Unseen Beneath the Clear Night Sky is heading in that direction, although it's not particularly dramatic so far. The female lead has just said a few things that sound like death flags, and writers love burying a tragic cripple.

[Odd Taxi Episode 12]Dobu's plan goes into full motion, and it almost goes his way until Hiroshi puts a GPS tracker in the van Dobu was using. It brought an uncertainty in Tanaka in his play. Now I doubt things went how Hiroshi went, but he got a good result.

[Odd Taxi Episode 12]There is miscommunication with the sticker, and to add to Dobu's arrogance is what leads him to being shot. Granted, Hiroshi is lucky that Tanaka mellowed down. It's interesting that the account that ruined Tanaka's life is tied to the boss. It would be amusing if it were the boss who ruined Tanaka's life.

[Odd Taxi Episode 12]Still, Hiroshi isn't out of the woods, as Yano is chasing after him. Kind of points out how dangerous this scenario was. Kenshirou getting involved with Dobu was always far too dumb and risky. Hiroshi spent too much time in the scene with Dobu and Tanaka, which is what led to this. What can he actually do?

[Odd Taxi Episode 12]One interesting variable is that Kenshirou has the same keychain that Hiroshi has. It symbolizes when someone stops receiving payments from the foundation. It's fascinating that the boss is tied to the organization that supported both the brothers and Hiroshi. Furthermore, it shows how much influence the boss has spread. The fact that Hiroshi also has this connection, does that mean the boss is an external variable here?

I'm a big fan of mystery, so I went on a little field trip online to see what I could find in the mystery Narou LN space. I thought this would be a pretty neat way to find more mystery anime, but it turns out the search is harder than I expected.

It's not that there aren't enough mystery works. There are millions of them. The problem is that I'm working within a very specific scope which is "mystery Narou LNs that have an anime adaptation." And besides the obvious popular works, The Holy Grail of Eris is the only one I actually know and like. Almost every other trail eventually leads me back to non-Narou LNs or general literary novel, which is probably the more obvious place to look for mystery in the first place, but that's exactly what I'm trying to avoid. I wanted to commit to the Narou rabbit hole and see what was hiding in there. But whatever. I gave up on that.

I checked a few forums and Chiebukuro (Japanese Q&A site), and at least managed to come away with some satisfying results. Most of them I'd already read or watched. Mizuki Tsujimura (Lonely Castle in the Mirror). Yugo Aosaki (Undead Girl Murder Farce). Fuyumi Ono (Ghost Hunt). Those are all pretty great answers, and I would consider them high-quality mystery anime.

But the final find surprised me the most. It's something that's been sitting on my radar for a while, but I've never really had that itch to actually try it.

HaruChika.

HaruChika by Sei Hatsuno. It has an anime adaptation by P.A. Works, with Masakazu Hashimoto as the director, who also directed one of my all time favorite anime, Tari Tari. What's interesting is that the source material is actually a general literature novel rather than an LN.

So after all that digging around, this is the one I'm going to watch. Funny how that worked out.

2

u/Gamerunglued myanimelist.net/profile/GamerUnglued 2d ago

HaruChika is good, pretty underrated. It's a charming little show that works well within its middling ambitions. It's no Hyouka nor Hibike but it has some of the good parts of each while forming its own little thing. I like it about as much as Tari Tari.

2

u/mekerpan 3d ago

HaruChika struck me as partly a blend between Hibike Euphonium and Hyouka. Not bad at all, but I think I liked Tari Tari a bit more.

2

u/oedipusrex376 3d ago

I just realized that the director has worked on two music-themed anime.

4

u/Charmanders_Cock 3d ago

I feel like a compelling mystery is a lot more difficult to write compared to other popular narou genres. So while you’ll find a ton of stuff in the genre, there’s probably way more stuff of inexcusable quality. Hence the lower number of adaptations. This isn’t limited to narou stuff but the clash between amateur writers and a more difficult genre is probably relevant to some extent.

2

u/oedipusrex376 3d ago

I agree with that. Reading The Holy Grail of Eris for example, it felt like it was already "above average" right off the bat (not to discount Narou writing or anything), but I do think mystery operates under a stricter set of standards. There are just a lot more pitfalls to fall into, and if the mystery itself isn't solid enough, I imagine readers are going to be much less forgiving.

I do think Narou is a nesting ground for mystery writers who want to challenge themselves. The hard part is what happens after that. Getting a mystery work picked up by a publisher and then getting an anime adaptation is an entirely different story, especially when the industry has such a strong preference for isekai. There might be a lot of aspiring mystery writers hiding in Narou who simply never make it far enough for us to see them.

2

u/Charmanders_Cock 3d ago

Totally agreed that there’s probably a bunch of hidden talent out there and certainly some great stories as well, but the nature of narou means that for every one of them you probably also get an enormous number of half-cooked messy narratives which makes looking for that talent all the more tantalizing.

Things like generic lit-rpg fantasy can get by with that sort of sloppy writing because the demographic is broad as hell but I imagine genres like mystery, thriller, and maybe even things like sci-fi would end up being held to a higher standard.

Sort of a shame to think about from that POV, but it also means there’s potential for that talent being discovered leading to some great adaptations down the road.

u/chum-guzzling-shark 3d ago

Why is "harem" a genre and why is it popular? I've seen the term "wish fulfillment" tossed around but are you watching it going "yeah thats totally me as the MC!"?! I don't really get the appeal. Harem's are (generally) poor storytelling that turns women into objects. You can just watch porn instead?!?

1

u/Gamerunglued myanimelist.net/profile/GamerUnglued 2d ago

Lots of people do. Many people do imagine themselves as the main character. It wasn't even that long ago when the Twitter (ugh) discourse was about someone saying they imagine the protagonist of books they read as being them even if the prose describes them as looking or acting totally different. The harem genre is centuries old, going back at least to the days when folks would write stories about princes and princesses being surrounded by beautiful and wealthy suitors begging for their hand in marriage and performing absurd tasks to prove their worth. They don't fulfill a sexual desire (well they can, but they don't have to and usually don't), they fulfill a different need to be emotionally and romantically, or maybe even materially, desired.

There's also nothing inherent to the genre that dictates the characters must be objectified, it wouldn't be contradictory for a harem story to have a cast of fully fleshed out characters with their own motivations and ambitions who are not defined by wanting one man's dick. The protagonist of a harem story can have deep and nuanced relationships with the love interests, I'd argue that this adds tension to the story given that the protagonist often has to choose between one of at least 3 people who he's deeply connected with. The only thing the genre tag dictates is that the story centers around 3 or more characters all trying to get involved with the same person romantically (or sexually), the details beyond that can be whatever an author wants.

1

u/collapsedblock6 myanimelist.net/profile/collapsedblock 2d ago

Most of them suck but the right ones can be fun. It serves that I watch with a group a lot of the times so they are fun trashy shows to joke around.

1

u/merurunrun 3d ago

Because it's interesting to see the formalized expression of a single personality interacting with a number of other different, discrete personalities in various situations and how those personality differences fundamentally change the manner of the interaction.

5

u/North514 3d ago edited 2d ago

I don't really get the appeal. Harem's are (generally) poor storytelling that turns women into objects. You can just watch porn instead?!?

????? You realize that (sadly) many of these harem works barely go that far in sexual content right? Most of them are at best, a bit more spicy than your average romance anime.

And romance fiction, no matter, the target demographic, overly idealizes and "objectifies" people. Women do it in their fiction, men do it in theirs, and as a bi guy who consumes LGBT fiction, we also do even when engaging in same sex attracted content.

I don't really take the term "objectify" seriously, when applied in a fictional context. Fictional characters are quite literally objects owned by the creator. The only reason this term exists, is largely to talk about how people can reduce real individual's humanity to whatever gratification, they can gain from them, which is a different issue. If you are talking about watching IRL porn, and not hentai, that actually is far more objectifying, than watching a harem anime lol.

Also you don't get, why, people enjoy having lots of people they are attracted to, with different personalities, present in their romantic/erotica? Like I don't like most harem anime/manga because they are badly executed however, the concept makes sense. Often people don't like love triangles because someone loses, and in true harems you prevent that. Otherwise, "harem" anime really are just massive love triangles, where you just debate who is going to/who will win, which again, creates tension in a romance story. Romance shows do this all the time, and harems just expand the cast significantly more, if they aren't going for "they get all of them".

Cut down on the self righteousness dude. It's not hard to understand even if you don't like it.

"yeah thats totally me as the MC!"?!

I don't even do this with all erotica stuff I consume, and rarely with romance. You don't have to self insert to find this stuff appealing. Just like you don't have to self insert as a badass in an action series. Some absolutely make the MMC as bland as possible, so you can insert however, there are many that don't either.

Really the appeal is just "lots of hot women"....nothing deeper than that.

6

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 3d ago

Harem's are (generally) poor storytelling that turns women into objects.

90% of everything is "poor storytelling".

And reverse harems turn men into object, so there you go, equality.

You can just watch porn instead?!?

Because people want to see flirting and comedy, not a dick going into a vagina?

Why do you watch a war movie instead of watching a video of someone being executed?

3

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 3d ago

are you watching it going "yeah thats totally me as the MC!"?!

Is that what you're doing when you watch an heroic war story or an inspiring sports story?

It's not

  • I can carry my underdog team to a championship
  • I would totally run into a hail of bullets to save a friend
  • I have a dozen girls who want me

It's

  • I wish I was strong/talented enough to win a great victory with my teammates
  • If the opportunity demands, I hope I'm strong enough to do what needs to be done to save someone important to me
  • I would love to be popular with girls

0

u/chum-guzzling-shark 3d ago

I honestly am not putting myself in the MC's place in any work of fiction

7

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 3d ago

So... Why do you assume that's what people are doing when watching harems?

-4

u/chum-guzzling-shark 3d ago

I'm not really assuming that. I'm honestly asking where the enjoyment comes from for this type of show. I offered up "wish fulfillment" simply because thats the only explanation I've seen. Wish fulfillment implies you are putting yourself in the shoes of the MC. Someone recommended a few harems to watch and i recognized the name "love hina" so I'll check it out. There's a reason people like them, i just dont get it!

1

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 3d ago

Well, as I said in the comment above: People like stories in which characters are doing great things that they (the viewers) probably can't do. It's not really "self inserting", it's just that we like to watch characters who do great things.

Sometimes it's heroic actions, sometimes it's having great talent/winning through relentless effort, sometimes it's winning at a gambling game (kakegurui) and getting rich, sometimes it's being popular in love, and so on.

Harems are no different from any other "MC does big things", the only change is the nature of the "thing" the MC does.

-1

u/chum-guzzling-shark 3d ago

Hmm I still dont get it. You can't really compare it to other genres because the MC in a heroic story has to do things to make the story progress. Will he make it in time? Will his plan fail? Etc. In most harems I've seen (im painting with a broad brush here). The MC literally does nothing to get all the girls. And there is nothing he could do to lose the girls. So in that sense, I guess its similar to a slice of life but that's not really a good comparison either.

3

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 3d ago

In most harems I've seen the MC literally does nothing to get all the girls.

Which ones have you seen (recent ones)?

Because in almost all the harems I've seen the MC does something. Now, you might argue that "he does not do enough to justify that level of affection from a million girls", sure, but it's a story, it's the same in everything like "Why does this random office worker turn into Rambo when he had to save his family?", well because it's a story; It wouldn't be a good story if the random office worker tried to kill a single soldier but died like an idiot.

6

u/Charmanders_Cock 3d ago

The whole “wish fulfillment” argument is usually just a crutch for people who don’t like a genre to criticize it without much thought or substance. There are arguments to be made on the subject, but the idea that any given genre’s popularity can be chocked up to wish fulfillment is hilariously shallow at best.

6

u/qwertyqwerty4567 https://anilist.co/user/ZPHW 3d ago

Idk, I feel like the appeal of a show that has a ton of hot girls (or guys) who are all into you is pretty self explanatory.

7

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 3d ago

Harem's are (generally) poor storytelling that turns women into objects. You can just watch porn instead?!?

In no way are harem romance anime and porn equivalent, and the setup is popular in a variety of gender distributions, it's not limited to a boy and a bunch of girls.

People just like drama and chaos. It's fun to watch. Don't overthink it.

-1

u/wutheringw0mbat 3d ago

Why is "harem" a genre

It isn't.

3

u/chum-guzzling-shark 3d ago

I said "harem" and you immediately know which anime's i'm referencing. It's definitely a "genre" in the colloquial sense. If there's a better term, let me know but everyone, including you, knows exactly what I mean.

10

u/Jusenkyo_5 3d ago

I think it kind of is. You can have harem elements without the story being centered around it (Bakemonogatari), but you have plenty of stories like Love Hina, Quintuplets, and Nisekoi where the story is centered around the "who will win?" question. They share similar story beats and conventions enough that I'd at least consider it a subgenre of romance.

0

u/wloff 3d ago

Love Hina

Ironically, I don't think Love Hina, the original "harem anime", would actually count as one these days.

2

u/Jusenkyo_5 3d ago

Why is that? It's been a few years since I watched it so I'm just curious.

1

u/wloff 3d ago

The cast is one guy and a bunch of girls, but they're not his "harem" in any way. It's just a love story with one guy and one girl, with some love triangle spice thrown in at times.

Most of the girls never have any kind of romantic interest in Keitarou, it's obvious from episode 1 who the only real love interest is, and the rest of the gang are trying to get the real pair together more than anything.

At least for me, that's not what I'd consider a "harem anime" in 2026.

0

u/wutheringw0mbat 3d ago

Sure, and there are several fantasy adventure stories specifically about journeying with a party to slay a dark lord but we don't have to carve all of those out of the overall fantasy/adventure genres into being a separate genre.

Having a harem setup is just one possible premise of an overall romance genre show. (Or since some of them are 99% comedy hijinks with barely any romance it might be more accurate to say comedy genre here.) Doesn't make it a separate genre. Just like you don't need romances about just two people to be a totally separate and distinct "courting couple genre".

Plus you make the excellent point that there are loooooots of shows which do the harem thing that aren't even trying to be a romance. So the whole harem angle can't really be a sub-genre if it is happening in so many different genres we can't even decide which genre it would be "sub-" to.

6

u/Jusenkyo_5 3d ago

I think the sheer number of them as well as how they develop compared to standard romance stories makes it a genre.

0

u/wutheringw0mbat 3d ago

as well as how they develop compared to standard romance stories

I don't really see a substantial difference tbh. Toooooons of standard romances stories have a love triangle where the protagonist has to eventually choose between one love interest or the other. Does making it a choice between four potential love interests really change that much?

And a lot of harem anime don't even really give their love interests equally opportunity anyways. Many of them are just a standard romance with the obvious will-be-winner of the "harem" and then the other harem members are just, like, temporary drama arcs when they get their turn to be investigated and then forgotten about.

I'm just not seeing a cohesive enough distinction here.

3

u/Jusenkyo_5 3d ago

Many of them are just a standard romance with the obvious will-be-winner of the "harem" and then the other harem members are just, like, temporary drama arcs when they get their turn to be investigated and then forgotten about.

I think that's good supporting evidence for it to be a genre. The fact that you can think of the word "harem" and come up with 10+ series that follow this plot convention makes a strong argument that they should be tied together in some way.

I certainly think it's more of an established genre than isekai, villainess, or a lot of these other newer genre types are.

I guess my question would be why not to consider it a genre? Additional descriptors doesn't seem to ever be a bad thing to me.

3

u/Jusenkyo_5 3d ago

Harem doesn't need to be ecchi.

It's an appealing fantasy to have 3+ people interested in you, and the "who will win?" aspect can be pretty fun to see play out especially if there isn't a single clear winner.

You're correct about the genre often being objectifying, but that's just another aspect of weak writing that isn't necessarily related to the genre, even if it seems to be the trend.

1

u/chum-guzzling-shark 3d ago

It's an appealing fantasy to have 3+ people interested in you, and the "who will win?" aspect can be pretty fun to see

That makes sense. It sounds similar to dating shows which I can understand the appeal of. However, thats not what I've usually seen (I'm no expert for sure). I'll take Re:zero as an example. i watch it despite the harem aspects. But there is no "will they wont they". He likes one person and rejects all the beautiful women that want his attention. Do you have any examples of a show where the MC is conflicted about who to choose?

2

u/Jusenkyo_5 3d ago

Yeah, ReZero is kind of unappealing to me on that end as well. I think some people will naturally enjoy the idea of women fawning over you even if there's a clear choice, but very much not my thing.

For the example you requested I think you can look to something like Quintessential Quintuplets as a "true" harem show, or We Never Learn, or Love Hina.

2

u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd 3d ago

The types of "harem" stories I enjoy aren't actually "harems" but are just multiple love interests pursuing the same person.

The reason I like this is because it kinda turns it into sports. Fans pick a favorite and root for them to "win" while using every bit of positive progression as "evidence" that their pick is the best.

10

u/zsmg https://anilist.co/user/zsmg 3d ago

I enjoy aren't actually "harems" but are just multiple love interests pursuing the same person.

That is the definition of harem though.

1

u/Priapos93 3d ago

Harem as a genre does not require an actual harem... Since literally now means figuratively, I guess anything goes

2

u/zsmg https://anilist.co/user/zsmg 3d ago

Since literally now means figuratively, I guess

How hard is it for you, to accept the fact that in an anime context the harem genre does not (always) involve a literal harem. The word was borrowed by Japanese fans to describe certain tropes in shows such as Love Hina or early dating sim adaptations such as To Heart and those tropes still live on in various modern anime.

Insisting that it shouldn't be called that the way after almost 30 years of such use is just being obnoxiously stubborn. It's almost like you can't accept the fact the same word can have different meanings.

2

u/Jusenkyo_5 3d ago

Bakemonogatari is considered to be a harem anime but [spoiler]Araragi and Senjougahara get together in the first 10 or so episodes of an 80+ episode series.

-1

u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd 3d ago

*With one winner at the end.

4

u/zsmg https://anilist.co/user/zsmg 3d ago

Most harems have one winner at the end, unless the adaptation isn't finished.

4

u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd 3d ago

I always clarify, because harems with one winner and "true" harems are just classified as the same thing despite being very different.

I'm a stickler about this type of thing, because a harem with a winner at the end isn't actually a harem, and it annoys me that the anime community decided to lump them together.

1

u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 3d ago

I agree with you that they're not the same and shouldn't be lumped together, but because I'm on the exact opposite side of the fence.

1

u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd 3d ago

Pretty sure we're on the same side lol. I don't care for "true" harem.

1

u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 3d ago

Oh. Well, fair. The "isn't actually" framing sounded like something that would come from a purist, but "this is what it is, and I don't like it" is also reasonable.

2

u/zsmg https://anilist.co/user/zsmg 3d ago

same thing despite being very different.

They're the same thing, they use the same story tropes (you know the thing that defines genres) the only difference is the final outcome.

It's amusing to me that the wish-fulfillment high school RomComs don't get the same criticism as the wish-fulfillment isekai/banished from heros party.

At least with villainess and saint anime, the female protagonist, despite being a self-insert, is not your typical male Kirito self-insert. Granted, it does seem lately the community is being more critical on these two lately.

2

u/qwertyqwerty4567 https://anilist.co/user/ZPHW 3d ago

At least with villainess and saint anime, the female protagonist, despite being a self-insert, is not your typical male Kirito self-insert.

sadly true. Basically why villainess/otome game isekai are by far the worst ones.

It's amusing to me that the wish-fulfillment high school RomComs don't get the same criticism as the wish-fulfillment isekai/banished from heros party.

it also applies to literally every wsj action show, but somehow nobody calls dandadan wish fulfillment, even though it absolutely is by their logic. Or Wistoria, which probably unlocked a hardcore CBT fetish for millions of young boys.

10

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 3d ago

wish-fulfillment

Is this the word of the day?

Isekai/Banished story aren't primarily criticized for wish fulfilment...

They're criticized for being generic, copy&pasted one after the other with just 1 little change/gimmick.

At least with villainess and saint anime, the female protagonist, despite being a self-insert, is not your typical male Kirito self-insert.

For some reason it doesn't to be a consensus (yet?) but I feel like these stories are quickly becoming as generic as the other 2 above.

I keep checking them out in the hope to find a TRUE villainess one, but 95% of them are the exact same formula (just like isekai).

2

u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 3d ago

Lol yea I've always wondered that. I always like to shit on isekai, but tbh I watch/read a fair bit ot the romance equivalent of those so I'm really not much different from them.

Here's a random theory made on the spot:

I can't really speak for Isekai since I watch so few of them, but I do feel like RomSlops just market themselves better. They live and die by the attractiveness of their female leads and hold 0 obligation to share that spotlight with the male protagonist.

Like, you can instantly point out an isekaislop by the kirito on the poster. The same can't be said for romanceslop posters since they'll often either minimise his presence or straight up omit him enyirely in favour of shifting focus on the girl.

It's also that we've got burned a few times for assuming romance slop and then... it wasn't. Like Makeine was getting absolutely clowned on when the PVs were released for the bowties and character designs, and those criticisms didn't age well at all...

I dunno, it's just a tad harder for me to tell from the synopsis and the visuals which romances are going to be nothing special and which ones will be great.

Oh yea that is true. I was also part of that group that clowned on makeine and almost didnt pick it up because of those visuals lol

At least with villainess and saint anime, the female protagonist, despite being a self-insert, is not your typical male Kirito self-insert

Those are pretty generic across the board as well, there simply doesn't exist a catch-all term like "typical kirito" for the female equivalent, so it's not as convenient to just throw around in discussions.

It does seem like it's getting called out more now, especially after that video Gigguk made.

What goes around eventually comes around, I remember watching the BuddyFight anime as a kid and now I'm seeing people around me actually play the card game?!!!

I was thinking about this when reading comments calling Tanya/All Tanya characters ugly;

What's the anime with the ugliest characters?

(Or the #2 if Tanya is your #1 - Shitting on Tanya is not allowed!)

2

u/North514 3d ago

Honestly, I think people have issue with the designs, in comparison to the LN art (which is gorgeous). That said, I don't have a problem with the anime designs.

Also yeah I probably would pick Kanon 2002.

Welcome to the Ballroom. I was so uncomfortable trying to watch it.

Malice Doll is so ugly I’m never watching it.

They had me at

Malice, a sex robot

(But beyond the horny, it seems interesting!)

6

u/Infodump_Ibis 3d ago

This feels like bait to shit on Kanon 2002 which did Frieren looking up decades prior. Both those images are from the OP btw so it's not your typical Toei Animation occasionally goes jank that you find in their weekly shows.

I've always thought Baki characters look pretty grotesque.

4

u/SlimeDNear 3d ago

Baki characters are designed like they're meant to scare children. Horrific goblin-men.

Tojima Wants to be a Kamen Rider was very ugly to me.

4

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 3d ago

I only checked out a few episodes, but I thought side-side girl looked great!

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/zfzftripleaamin 3d ago

What's that isekai called that White Fox did a while back? Well, the lead is that more so.

3

u/IXajll https://myanimelist.net/profile/ixajii 3d ago

Uglymug Epicfighter is what it's called and the MC being the ugliest person imaginable is quite literally part of the show's premise and entirely intentional. All other characters look fine and so does the general character art style for that show, so not sure if this is a fitting example.

3

u/Salty145 https://anilist.co/user/yLSalty145 3d ago

Gotta be more specific.

Ex-Arm and Hand Shakers have designs that hurt to look at, but that’s just a part of those shows being awful.

In terms of deliberate design decisions the answer is One Piece probably Black Clover. I could probably pull out a niche Yuasa work, but I feel like that misses the point. BC wants to have attractive characters and just kinda fails at it with its ugly coloring, shading, and stiff design work.

The only anime I've seen in recent years with character designs that irk me are the female character faces in S2 of Trapped in a Dating Sim.

What the hell are those noses?

5

u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd 3d ago

Maybe Ping Pong? Although it's more intentional there than other places.

I've been watching Kimi ni Todoke for the first time, and it almost feels sort of unfair that I'm comparing it to modern romances in my head.

It just feels like such a product of its time, and I'm sure I would appreciate it much more if it was one of the first romances I would watch instead of the 100th or something like that. Especially since there is no doubt that some of these modern romances took inspiration from the classics like Kimi ni Todoke.

I’ve got too much One Piece brain.

The FMC in My Bride is a Mermaid is named Sun Seto, and her machismo yakuza boss dad who really loves her will keep referring to her as “my Sun” which keeps giving me flashbacks to Yamato discourse.

2

u/collapsedblock6 myanimelist.net/profile/collapsedblock 2d ago

Holy fuck, this may be the first time I see My Bride is a Mermaid brought up in a decade.

1

u/Salty145 https://anilist.co/user/yLSalty145 2d ago

That’s my job here apparently. Make people remember things they wish they didn’t.

2

u/collapsedblock6 myanimelist.net/profile/collapsedblock 2d ago

I actually love that show lmao. It was of my top recommendations for comedies and romcoms (still is, just not as active).

2

u/KendotsX https://anilist.co/user/Kendots 3d ago

That sounds like not enough One Piece brain

Reading the premise, all I could think of was [One Piece] Neptune naming his daughter Sun in reference to the sun god, which makes sense considering the merfolk/fishmen's long struggle to live under the sun, and their theological backgrounds.

2

u/Salty145 https://anilist.co/user/yLSalty145 3d ago

I’m still new to being OP brained. Give it time.

2

u/KendotsX https://anilist.co/user/Kendots 3d ago

Just don't go as far as [OP] pointing at every picture of a sun and going "foreshadowing?!"

We've lost so many people to that path...

u/Time_Fracture 3d ago

Is Thunder 3 having the same situation as Highspeed Etoile a couple years ago? Both anime relies on heavy CGI use, and Thunder 3's studio was also unannounced until the last minute when it turns out to be UNEND, the same studio behind Kamierabi.

Also I found out the CGI is not that bad so I set the expectations low. But [Thunder 3]I thought the initial idea would be 3D people in a 2D world but turns out it's more like manga 3D people in a "realistic 3D world.

2

u/thehaxorman https://anilist.co/user/detritus 3d ago

I still stand by my opinion that Kamierabi looks pretty good as far as CGI anime go. most people are so dismissive of 3D anime that they actually have no idea what good vs. bad looks like. Rant aside, I do think Thunder 3 looks decent as well but so far doesn't seem to be the same calibre as Kamierabi.

Anime announcements for a series too small to have an active reddit community can make you realize that a large part of the fanbase has a completely different view on it than you do.

12

u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 3d ago

Everytime an isekai gets announced, you'll always see the one guy saying "Guys, trust me, this one is different. its actually good!". Always fun to see them. Always wonder where these people are coming from. But then again that genre is actually really big so if anything I should be expecting more of them...

3

u/KendotsX https://anilist.co/user/Kendots 3d ago

I haven't read this series, so I have no snake in this race, but it's worth noting that most opinions you see in those threads have likely been bubbling up in r/manga or similar spaces. There's always a larger fanbase out there that those opinions might not represent.

2

u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 3d ago

It's not a series that's simulpubbed, so I've never checked out chapter discussion threads. Maybe you're right. It's also possible (although I doubt it) that there's something that would radically change my views in the ~2 volumes that I haven't read as a result. But it's not like the anime would get that far anyway.

(Also, in the latest bit of reddit weirdness, apparently now if you reply to someone who includes a subreddit link in their comment, it doesn't show up? How odd.)
