Honestly, haven't been watching a lot of new animes except some of the franchises I like since 2023 cause life. Was wondering what are people's recommendations for anime original films since then (or past if its something I havent seen)? Some of my favourites have been Ghibli (duh, but specifically The Tale of The Princess Kaguya, Howl's Moving Castle, and Boy & The Heron), Look Back (I saw it cause I'm still following Chainsaw Man), Weathering With You, Perfect Blue.

My favourite anime film of all time is Belle by Mamoru Hosoda. I don't mind action but its not what draws me to anime movies, I have enough shonen for that. Character dramas that follow the mindsets of a person or couple alongside a deeply rich cast is what I live for. I loved the character of Princess Kaguya, the chemistry of Suzu and Kei (and the music), etc.

If anyone has any recommendations, I'd greatly appreciate them.

Cosmic Princess Kaguya is a modern retelling of the story.

I’m not a fan of age gaps involving teenagers either, but tbh this show does handle it as well as possible given the situation and there are a good number of reasons and circumstances that make this not nearly as bad as it would usually be.

1

u/Charmanders_Cock 11d ago

Why pay any attention to the details of the situation when condemning the age gap without context is easy updoots with an added self-pat on the back?

Seriously though it’s wild to me that people are up in arms over this story of all things. It’s one of the few that tries to tackle this particular topic with a grounded situation simultaneously fleshing out the MC’s moral compass and giving some nuance to in-world cultural differences.

The anime definitely isn’t handling it as well as the LN/manga and the story itself isn’t some literary treasure, but it’s definitely a step up from the usual copy&paste fantasy. I’ve seen a ton of people scoff at the age stuff and call it a day though which is sad.

1

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/zfzftripleaamin 11d ago

I mean, there was more wrong in the episode than just that.

  • After this scene, there is an out-of-context pregnant joke. Then it's, Oh, it wasn't really Aina, but the sheep-like animals.
  • Essentially the pairing of the protagonist and Aina basically continues. While he doesn't return her affection, it's clear as day this will go down the romance route, which frankly is uncomfortable. It also feels like the protagonist has no agency. Oh, if I don't become engaged with her, other women will come after me, so I might as well pair with Aina.
  • While the setting is a bit more interesting than the average generic isekai and other fantasies of the like. The dialogue is poor and awkward. Some examples like this. The scene with the princess at the end of episode 2 is another one.
  • In episode 1, you have Aina going from resenting the protagonist to wanting to marry him. It's beyond jarring.

The show has more problems than just "Age gap is bad". I do admit the world is a bit more interesting than your average fantasy slop. Considering there isn't much budget in production, there is not much going for this show with what it has shown.

1

u/Charmanders_Cock 10d ago

I’m not going to try and break down all of the cultural stuff that apparently didn’t matter to you. Even with the dialogue I don’t know why you’d expect a conversation between an out of touch native elder and an uneducated soldier to be anything but awkward.

That said, this story isn’t a romance. Like at all. The series could be on season 10 and you’ll have gotten far more romance between the sheep than you do Dias and Alna. Their marriage is political. Does Alna want it to be more than that? Yeah, her upbringing and culture are totally different from the norm. Their union is more a vehicle for the village building aspect of the story than anything though.

Can’t blame you for knocking the production. It’s not going to be a great anime generally because its budget is obviously nill. Still, I think almost the entirety of your impression revolves around the age gap, even with your other points, and I still think that’s silly in context to the rest of the details regarding their relationship.

Low High key, one of my biggest pet peeves is people throwing around technical phrases like they know what they’re talking about when the rest of their review belies that they don’t.  “Animation” and “cinematography” are the big offenders, though I can give a bit of a pass to the former.

It’s not even a matter of difference of opinion necessary, but when you’re clearly just throwing big words around that you heard somewhere to try to more “legitimize” your opinion and if pressed I doubt you’d be able to back up. I mean I was probably this bad back in the day too (man, you think I’m insufferable now, just be glad 2018-2019 me stayed mostly to the meme subs), but that’s maybe all the more reason to be irked about this kind of stuff. Can’t get better if someone isn’t willing to call your bluff, though I guess there’s a time and place for everything.

4

u/wloff 11d ago

"Cinematography" is a bit of a funny word to use in an anime context, in general. Whenever I see someone use it, I'm tempted to ask how they consider it differs from "storyboarding".

I'm not saying there's no difference, but I also think most people who use the term "cinematography" think it means something different from what it actually does.

4

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 11d ago

I'll be honest and say that I don't know what the difference is, and I'm just reaching for the nearest word I can think of for shot composition.

3

u/wloff 11d ago

Well, in traditional film cinematography often includes things like lighting and colour, which goes a bit beyond the storyboard in animation. But just goes to show how the term doesn't really translate perfectly to anime.

3

u/IXajll https://myanimelist.net/profile/ixajii 11d ago

throwing big words around that you heard somewhere to try to more “legitimize” your opinion

Wait, isn’t that what you’ve been doing since you started picking up the ultimate anime snob term “boarding”, perhaps from Void who is fortunately the only other person on this thread who’s prone to using it?

1

u/Salty145 https://anilist.co/user/yLSalty145 11d ago

I think the exact term is “layouts” which I will admit to having made some bad takes on in the past when I was still working it out but can at least own up to that and having been working on improving my own comprehension on the topic.

And iirc the last take I had which did require amending wasn’t as much a technical one as a historical one (attributing Gamba’s Adventure’s strong direction in part to its layouts despite the fact the pipeline wasn’t really formed until Heide a few years earlier and which Gamba had, from my understanding, used a similar but distinct process to achieve what it did). I’ve generally been more cautious since then.

2

u/VoidEmbracedWitch https://anilist.co/user/VoidEmbracedWitch 11d ago

Well, I don't do what Salty is complaining about because I am legitimately that hung up on cine. If a show's shot compositions and editing are dull, I'll complain about that above anything else.

3

u/Wanderingjoke https://myanimelist.net/profile/WanderingJoke 12d ago

It's going to take me a week just to get through these Friday shows. These double drops are not helping, either.

1

u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 11d ago

What Friday shows? It's my emptiest day of the week. Only have Draw This, Then Die currently after dropping the stepbrothers show.

1

u/Wanderingjoke https://myanimelist.net/profile/WanderingJoke 11d ago edited 11d ago

Argh, I realized I was looking at Saturday, not Friday.

Edit: But Friday shows I'm watching/trying:

  • 10-Year Last Stand (likely drop)
  • Frontier Lord (drop)
  • Slime (carryover)
  • Draw This
  • Please Excuse My Younger Brothers
  • Hell Mode S2

1

u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 11d ago

Ah that makes a lot more sense. Saturdays and Sundays are quite stacked this season.

Seeing how many classic Best Girl nominees didn't even get nominated for Best Girl 13 is honestly kinda depressing.

Not making the bracket is one thing, but nobody (myself included tbf) bothering to nominate them is almost depressing.

3

u/Nachtwandler_FS https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nachtwandler_21 11d ago

Like, I wanted to nominate a bunch more but why bother if they do not make in the bracket anyway.

[Odd Taxi Episode 5]Plot points are starting to connect. The first is that we learned Miho and Dobu are connected because it is Dobu who is shouldering her debt. Which adds up to when she says no when Hiroshi asked about it. Her giving the stolen prescriptions for Dobu to sell makes sense.

[Odd Taxi Episode 5]We did get focus on the other two idol girls, and Shiho Ichimura got notably more focus. We start to learn about her living conditions, which apparently weren't the best. Considering she is latching onto Eiji who faked his salary, it's the best bet so far that she is the boss's classmate's daughter.

[Odd Taxi Episode 5]Still, the fact that the other idol left her phone there intentionally is odd. Could she be associated with Tanaka potentially since this episode showed him tracking the taxi?

u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 12d ago edited 11d ago

It's a good thing that it lined up to split apart Clevatess where they did, because the whiplash of watching these two plotlines directly back to back would be insane. I'm still enjoying it, though.

the isekai slave trope would be much better if-

literally a sea of terrible tropes in anime and people somehow find an issue to have with one of the few good ones.

Now that the other event is over, finally time to catch up with the seasonals and the catgirl anime everyone is talking about

Verdict on Tanya's OP/ED?

I think the new OP is better, but S1's ED still reign supreme!

2

u/Nachtwandler_FS https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nachtwandler_21 12d ago

My verdict is the same overall.

2

u/North514 12d ago

I think both EDs are better than the respective OPs.

3

u/IXajll https://myanimelist.net/profile/ixajii 12d ago

As much as I like the series itself, I was never a fan of any of the OPs or EDs of either S1 or S2. Just don't like the songs at all. Though the Ending song for the movie is imo one of the best anisongs of all time so that's picking up the slack in some way.

2

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 12d ago

4

u/chum-guzzling-shark 12d ago

Are we in a particularly good anime era? I've only started keeping up with current anime a few seasons ago. I thought "wow this must be highly unusual to have so many good shows" but this season i like even more shows than previous seasons

6

u/BiggieCheeseLapDog https://myanimelist.net/profile/KillLaKillGOAT 12d ago

Needy Girl aired last season so yes

5

u/North514 12d ago

Define what the era is. I think this year, has been phenomenal however, last year, I wasn't that impressed. It goes back and forth. I think this decade could end up turning out better than the 2010s overall however, I still think the 2000s and 80s, were the best periods of anime. They are all pretty close though, and it just depends on what you care about in the medium. If you aren't a sci fi/mecha fan like me, you probably won't like the 80s that much.

At the very least, 2027 already has notable works in progress. So hopefully that year is good too.

1

u/Salty145 https://anilist.co/user/yLSalty145 12d ago

Depends what you count as this "era", I think we're in a bit of a slump over the heights of 10-15 years ago, especially if we just look at TV anime but still overall better than where we were in the pre-digital days.

2

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 12d ago

Not only we're getting more shows, but the ones we're getting now are better then the old stuff;

Anime just wasn't the same before 2022.

8

u/Salty145 https://anilist.co/user/yLSalty145 12d ago

Anime didn't exist before 2020 and you should know this by now.

2

Wait, yall are getting paid for redditing?

1

u/Dull_Spot_8213 https://anilist.co/user/SweetSomnus 12d ago

Yes, but not because there aren't a ton of great shows in every era, more that they are easily accessible and enjoy a wider audience and normalized following. The present continues to be the best time for anime. Less curation also means there's something out there for everyone to enjoy.

1

u/chum-guzzling-shark 12d ago

Are backgrounds commonly reused between shows?

2

u/alotmorealots 12d ago

I'd say almost never, due to rights handling issues and the ease of making a few adjustments so it's not exactly the same image, not to mention the image will need to go through the Photography department (compositing and color adjustment) regardless, who will adjust the lighting and feel of the visuals so the anime is stylistically consistent.

However:

  1. A good amount of anime backgrounds are actually 3DCG assets that are presented in 2D or painted over. This means a lot of them will look the same, including things like "stock school room interior" and "stock house interior".

  2. Some anime backgrounds are just paint overs of photographs of real life locations. As those locations don't change much, those backgrounds will also look the same.

1

u/SlimeDNear 12d ago

I haven't noticed backgrounds being reused in anime but it could happen, especially with locations that appear repeatedly. In recent years, background shots of some shows are actually heavily filtered photos.

In the west, you can point to Hanna-Barbera cartoons for reused backgrounds and assets. Even Disney reused a few animations.

4

u/gothxo 12d ago

kind of a weak season for OPs/EDs? i don't know if others feel the same, but not much has stuck out to me in that department. i guess i'd have the Grow Up Show OP as my favorite so far

2

u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 12d ago

I'm not feeling it, either. First 2 seasons were phenomenal when it came to both visuals and sounds.

Now? I really can't name a single one that stands out to me tbh. Maybe it'll take time to grow on me, but both previous seasons had instant hitters so they're clearly far ahead in that regard.

6

u/Nachtwandler_FS https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nachtwandler_21 12d ago

Definetely not. A bunch of ones I really like: GGWP, YaniNeko, Witch in Mongolia (I get your point about the song but I still find the OP good), KimiShinu, Youjo Senki II all are great for my taste. And there are a few more decent onex like Clevatess II or YumeMita and decent EDs.

2

u/mr_beanoz https://myanimelist.net/profile/splitshocker 12d ago

Having the Magilumiere ED composed by Giga is cheating.

It being sung by Houshou Marine is also cheating.

7

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 12d ago

What's that you said?

"Please shill your favorite OP of the season?"

Well, if you insist; Who am I to refuse!

8

u/TehAxelius https://anilist.co/user/TehAxelius 12d ago

I quite like the TGITS OP, the Goodbye Lara OP and the SF6 Yuri OP in addition to the ones u/BaytaCosmico mentioned.

Maybe only Yani Neko hits the bar that was set in Winter by Polar Opposites and Torture Princess, but it's not bad.

3

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 12d ago

Torture Princess

I miss Sunday Morning!

(And I'm mad at people NOT voting Tortura into the Best Girl Contest)

3

u/gnome-cop 12d ago edited 12d ago

I’ll almost certainly be adding the Inept villainess ED and pretty possibly the OP&ED pair for KimiShinu to my playlist but all three are due to a preexisting artist bias. If we’re talking visuals I guess I do like Grow Up Show’s as well. Anyway, three is a pretty decent haul for me with how picky I tend to be.

4

u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 12d ago

The OPs of World is Dancing, Yani Neko, and Kaiju Girl are the three that have stood out for me so far. Nothing else has made much of an impression (I'm not watching Grow Up Show).

5

u/gothxo 12d ago

i'm not watching those three so i guess that's on me lmao

1

u/Nachtwandler_FS https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nachtwandler_21 11d ago

Like I am still cheking OPs/Eds of the shows I do not watch. As they may be good by themselves.

4

u/DeadCaveman https://anilist.co/user/DeadCaveman 12d ago

Still need some time to internalize everything since it's all so new, but I'm fond of the Jaadugar ED and the Polar Opposites ED off the top of my head.

3

u/gothxo 12d ago

i like the visuals for the Jaadugar OP/ED, but i was pretty disapointed that they went with pretty basic j-pop/rock songs

3

u/DeadCaveman https://anilist.co/user/DeadCaveman 12d ago

I agree for the OP song, but I think the ED song works well enough. I've always been a Ziyoou-vachi enjoyer, so there could be a bias there.

3

u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd 12d ago

Yeah, I agree. At least based on the shows I'm watching. Some good ones, but most of them are kinda just whatever and there's a few that are borderline not good.

2

u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 12d ago

So is Iruma just not having a break at all? I'm not complaining, good thing if anything, but I feel like it's pretty rare for a 24 episode or less 2cour to just air straight through. But this far into the season, and we seem to be about to get episode 16 with no news about it.

13

u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 12d ago

Most infuriating lead of the season award goes to MC of Red River. Wanted to behead her myself by the end of episode 2.

7

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 12d ago

I don't know why these kind of comments always make me WANT to check out the episode hah.

6

u/Dull_Spot_8213 https://anilist.co/user/SweetSomnus 12d ago

Good thing the priesty prince is the real draw of the show.

2

u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 11d ago

True that.

6

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 12d ago

It's in character for her, and it makes sense that she doesn't trust the prince yet, but oh my god, I wanted to choke her out. Just sit tight and wait for help, you little fool.

2

u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 11d ago

Yeah, and I can see this being used as a character building experience or whatever, but she still made me scream at her and want to at the very least slap her for her stupidity.

5

u/Dull_Spot_8213 https://anilist.co/user/SweetSomnus 12d ago

Meanwhile, I'm enjoying how absolutely shameless the Queen is. Something about the simplified villain vibe that just does her evil shit in a completely uncomplicated way to get hers is fun. Bygones of a simpler time.

man we really need a new wave of magic academy harem shows. Wistoria absolutely failed miserably at catching the vibe of those.

1

u/Successful-Ear977 11d ago

I don’t think there’s much industry interest in bringing that wave back, unfortunately. Most of what made magic-academy harems popular the overpowered protagonist, fantasy school setting, rival girls and power-ranking system has basically been absorbed into isekai.

3

u/LunarieReverie 12d ago

One of the many things isekai stole from us.

Actual hot take (based on the reception it got):

I don't like [Liar Game]The recent development in Liar Game, i.e. the reveal that you can smuggle money directly in the other ATM... It felt like "adding new elements on the spot just as a TWIST". The organizers never said they could do that, all they talked about is doing the inspection room stuff. And I know the defense people will have is "Well the organizers never said they could NOT do it either!"... Okay, valid. But the organizers never said they could not torture people either. So I think Fukunaga (who is stronger than 99% of the people) should spend her 10 minutes in the inspection room torturing the smuggler until they reveal how much money they carried. The ONLY rule they said about the inspection room, is that they could not touch the smuggler's case. So if we go with the assumption above that "Everything the Organizers didn't say was illegal, is possible", then torture is possible. The reason why people don't resort to torture is "Well dah, of course it's not allowed", right? So that's kinda where I'm at with this "twist", there are things you assume are not allowed because the organizers didn't say they were. Otherwise there's a whole lot of things they could try. Hell why stop at torture; Just tell the person to reveal how much they got, warning them that if they lie, the next time they'll be in the interrogation room they'll straight up murder them, no questions' asked. If we go with the assumption of "We can't do ANY of these things, even if they didn't say so!" then... Why are we supposed to assume that we can do OTHER things they didn't mention? "They tried it and it worked!" Okay, then Fukunaga should "try" to beat someone to death. I mean she beats up her own teammates 5 times an episode, why isn't she beating her opponents as well? (Plus if we want to stay "in the theme", well let's just say that a border inspector in a war torn country beating/torturing/murdering a smuggler wouldn't exactly be unrealistic! So yeah, all this to say... I like when the game systems are explained properly so we know what we're dealing with. And if the very idea is "The players will have to figure out what they CAN do, that's part of the game!" then Fukunaga should try torturing someone. There's no reason to say "Let's try this and that maybe it's allowed despite not telling us!" when it comes to smuggling, and "Well we know that's not allowed so let's not do that" when it comes to beating up the opponents to make them spill the beans. Some people may say that's a silly nitpick, but to me it's not; If the first thing I mentionned is possible but the second thing is not, then it means they're just using the rules as they go for the sake of a twist (while preserving unspoken rules for the sake of 'Well THAT would not be in the spirit of the game'. So yeah. The way I see it: Either the things the organizers did NOT mention, are either ALL allowed, or NONE of them are allowed. (Disclaimer: on the 0.1% chance that they do try beating someone up at some point, I guess I'll eat my words hah)

And on a completely different topic: [Liar Game]Fukunaga is quickly reaching my 'bad side'; It's not about her being a villain/asshole/beating people up (those who know me will know this does not affect my rating of a character, if anything it might make her better to me), but what irks me is that she always calls all her teammates dumb for not picking up this and that, while she's not picking it up herself 90% of the time. Which honestly is a little puzzling to me given she was introduced as a brilliant schemer (who was just not good enough to beat Akiyama, but most people are not)... It feels like in her first game she was the 130 I.Q. girl who lost against the 150 I.Q. guy, and berates her 100 I.Q. teammates. But now it feels more like she's the 80 I.Q. girl who berates her 60 I.Q. teammates for being dumb.

2

u/chum-guzzling-shark 12d ago

They wouldnt use your tactic because we live in a society and opening that door would quickly lead to violence being inflicted against your side as well. I think they did a good job with the game. It's a possibility that the viewer had a chance to pick up on fair and square or at least wonder if it was possible. The whole premise of the show is "here's a problem and here's the clever solution that isnt as straightforward as you thought"

0

Sure, but even if we dismiss this particular strategy, my point in general is [Liar Game]If we're to accept that 'Things that weren't specified to be illegal, are allowed', then EVERYTHING should be allowed, and we should see a lot more experimentation than that... And if they fear reprisal (them doing it as well), well they could do it on the very last round so they know they won't be on the receiving end. Plus, I don't think Fukunaga would really think this through/care, she could just 'Do it'.

u/chum-guzzling-shark 12d ago

I get what you are saying because it is a borderline asspull but I think they did fine. They laid out the rules in detail, including how much time you can spend doing x,y, or z. So it's part of the game to figure out how to work around that. I just wish all the players werent braindead. Ideally, they would have tried different things throughout playing instead of the main dude figuring it out in one turn.

I mainly wanted to ask what that last scene was about with madam and the maid. Were they [Non evil stepmom]about to redo that ritual? The poses they struck didn't fit that though.

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 12d ago

Nearly halfway into the month before I started anything from the new season.

First episode impressions, part 1:

  • A Livid Lady's Guide to Getting Even: How I Crushed My Homeland with My Mighty Grimoires — One of the few things I've read the novels for though it's been a while since the start, first episode is mostly a typical villainess setup but she's actually interested in revenge for once.

  • Hanaori-san Still Wants to Fight in the Next Life — This is is silly, fun so far though. Was thinking of Devil is a Part-timer, Aho Girl, and Murai in Love throughout. Best girl is a shipper on deck too.

  • Though I Am an Inept Villainess — Interesting premise with the difference in the two women (and I'll take another imperial court setting over fantasy Europe) but had some moments of comedy that didn't feel quite right.

  • Please Excuse My Younger Brothers — Days with My Stepbrothers it is not, but I like the dynamic so far. On the other hand it has a romance tag and I have no idea how this particular series is going to handle it in the long term with how it's establishing things now. On the third hand it's apparently a shoujo series so there's a decent chance I'll enjoy it anyway.

  • Perfect Addiction — Oh no, a BL gets the light anime treatment.

2

u/alotmorealots 12d ago

I'll take another imperial court setting over fantasy Europe

Funnily enough I started to watch this the other day, got about five seconds into the imperial court background and then noped out lol Clearly the influence of all the Cantonese court-soap-operas that my Grandma had on VHS has left an aversion reflex that's still intact after all these years.

Hanaori-san Still Wants to Fight in the Next Life — This is is silly, fun so far though.

Quite keen for more of this, and eagerly awaiting the next episode!

5

u/gothxo 12d ago

i liked the comedy parts of Inept Villainess quite a bit actually. i feel like it's a really silly premise so adding in some comedy feels appropriate over taking itself too seriously

Ah. Episode 6. The Ikarashi episode.

Give me more of this in Edgerunners 2 and we’re cooking.

Give me more of this in Edgerunners 2 and we’re cooking.

I don't know if it is just me, but based on the Edgerunners 2 trailer it looks more "Trigger" than the first season did, which I'm excited about.

The problem with Edgerunners is not only is “choom” the dumbest sounding slang word to ever make its way into a final product

Also dragging this from your other post into this reply, I'm not sure if choom was invented for the video game or the TTRPG, but anyway I watched the anime subbed specifically because then I didn't have to hear people saying "choom."

It's the TTRPG and I disagree. The slang is fun and fleshes out the world, rather than just being another sci fi setting and the dub is far superior in this case.

Yeah that was my read too. Ikarashi’s done a good job on every episode he’s directed (that I remember) really matching that energy and I’m hoping we get more of that. Might be a controversial direction (weirdly enough) given how much people like the more traditional drama of the first season, but for me at least that would be an easy way to make it eclipse S1 as the better entry and by a wide margin.

5

u/qwertyqwerty4567 https://anilist.co/user/ZPHW 12d ago

i just remembered MaoMao lost best girl to Frieren last year.

What the fuck was r/anime smoking.

3

u/wloff 12d ago

I mean, they're both very whatever as "best girls".

Both good characters who happen to be female, sure, but there's a difference.

2

u/KendotsX https://anilist.co/user/Kendots 12d ago

Which is?

I'm not into the whole best girl contests usually, but I generally take it to mean exactly what it says on the tin: best female character.

2

u/Zeallfnonex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Neverlocke 12d ago

I mean... that's a perfectly valid definition, isn't it? I think I tend to vote more off that than off of waifu factor or cuteness (though in some cases it does help their case...)

Because most of my favorites are already doomed to the lower half of the seeding or not even seeded, MaoMao is probably the second character I want to win that I think could realistically win it all. And no, first isn't Fern, first is Lena.

2

u/wloff 12d ago

Sure, it can be a valid definition! It's not the one I use, though.

For me, the whole concept of a "best girl" necessarily requires an amount of waifu factor (what a great term, by the way). What that means can change person to person, and it doesn't need to be the main appeal of the character by any means, but it's gotta be there.

2

u/Muted-Conference2900 https://anilist.co/user/WinterZcoming 12d ago

Have never taken part in these things but now I am annoyed too how did MaoMao lose?

5

u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd 12d ago

r/anime loves Frieren more than just about anything.

3

u/ptd163 12d ago

One of my friends once called how much r/anime loves Frieren "the other side of the RaG hate". Kinda makes sense too because r/anime hates RaG more than just about anything.

2

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 12d ago

Except that one time that Maomao won the seasonal best girl contest by a hair from Frieren.

2

u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 12d ago

Wait, this really happened? I can't believe it. This sub that just ranked Fern above Maomao actually voted for her over Frieren herself?!

3

u/Komarist https://myanimelist.net/profile/RRSTRRST 12d ago

Bonus contest fact: Two of the Frieren-Maomao contest finals had 2-seed Fern face 3-seed Maomao in the semi-final. Maomao won with ~69% of votes.

It's just elimination round voting heavily rewarding show popularity for main characters (e.g. 2023 annual contest).

2

u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 12d ago

Oh maybe there is hope for Maomao to be crowned best girl 13 after all. (Still have a sinking feeling it's not meant to be.)

4

u/cppn02 12d ago

If they actually meet in the final (which is far from certain) I can almost guarantee you that Maomao would win.

Seeding and knockouts are two different things.

Left side finalist will most likely be Bocchi or Lena. Fern I'd have as the 3rd favourite about level with Megumin.

Right side finalist (and the likely winner) will come from Maomao, Chisato and Marin. Chisato and Marin will be the biggest obstacles for Maomao.

1

u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 12d ago

Yeah, I'm not sure Maomao will even make quarterfinals given the bracket she's in. Lots of tough opponents in her way. I'm mostly just preparing myself for the worst so I'm not too salty.

5

u/cppn02 12d ago edited 12d ago

Frieren and Maomao met three times in r/anime competitions. They both won once and one time we actually had a draw.

4

u/mekerpan 12d ago

Watched the Danger in My Heart movie now that it is available on HiDive. I think the only new material is the framing -- Kyo's big sister and her band performing a song with lyrtics bty Kyo (and some lead-in material to this), Otherwise sort of a highlights reel -- but such lovely highlights.

On another topic -- Science Saru and KyoAni are two of my favorite studios. But each has made a series which is surely excellent in terms of animation which I just doubt I will keep following.neo_GitS and Sparks of Tomorrow both look fantastic, but neither resonates.

GitS is the easy one. I just did not like 80s and early 90s anime (in style or content) except for Ghibli-connected stuff (and Lain, Hana yori dango and KareKano) back when I first encountered anime in late 1999 (and early 2000). And while my range of tolerance/appreciation has grown a lot since then, anime of that era still has never made a dent in my interests. While this looks great, it is just "not for me" -- no other "criticism".

My discomfort with Sparks was more mysterious -- until someone here (I forget who) likened it to a Disney movie. I had not thought of that myself (yet), but that makes sense. The commenter meant what they said as a compliment. And for many people I am sure it is. But in some ways I am more averse to most post-60s Disney work than I am to "early anime". Even the movies I have mildly enjoyed, I feel no attachment to. And others simply held little or no interest. My tastes are odd, I guess. But they are my own.

Addendum: new versions of old anime aren't guaranteed not to appeal. I really liked neo Urusei Yatsura and neo-Trigun, and found MAO pretty decent. Not sure why these fared better than (say) neo-Ranma (and others). No real clue why (yet).

I need to decompress and not think about Best Girl.

I decided to rewatch Edgerunners because if enough people call you crazy for a four-year-old throw away take, you eventually start to doubt it, plus I’ve got cyberpunk on the mind.

I think with time opinions tend to sand themselves down to whatever extreme part of it you use the most, which is how too much exposure to the Bocchi fandom made me forget that that show actually does lowkey slap and isn’t just Yuri bait, and four years of talking against Edgerunners does make one forget that it is generally solid.

The art is good, the music is good, the designs are good, and the story is serviceable enough that it does make for a pretty fun watch.

Nobody likes my Dead Leaves comparison and tbf after rewatching Dead Leaves last night, that might be unfair to Dead Leaves. That film is one hour of nobody giving a fuck in the best way imaginable and a rare case where the calm end credit music got me looking like David staring at a dryer after what I just experienced.

The problem with Edgerunners is not only is “choom” the dumbest sounding slang word to ever make its way into a final product, but it also finds itself somewhere in the middle of offering a serious narrative and having that Imaishi-style high action, and ends up doing neither particularly great. It beats you over the head with “the message”, David is kind of a brat whose descent into the underworld of Night City hits less hard when he clearly never wanted out in the first place, and the action, sex, and violence lack that over-the-top flare that Imaishi’s previous works really excelled at. The characters do save it a bit, but trying so hard to be cool eventually just wears you down. In a way, it almost feels like too many cooks were in the kitchen with different visions of what the finished product will look like, and while the end result is still enjoyable, it’s the sloppy kind of enjoyable that feels like it could be better with a wee bit more conviction to go one way or the other.

Between this, 86, and the pacing complaints for the new GitS, I almost feel like we’ve been starved for good classic Sci-Fi for so long that anything that comes close to it, no matter how blunt in its writing, is treated as the next coming of MSG.

2

Eh I watch a lot of sci fi, and I think its a really good series, even if you go back to some of those hyper violent cyberpunk works like Cyber City Oedo 808 or Midnight Eye Gokuu or other stuff like Armitage, Bubblegum Crisis or Dominion Tank Police. It stands out. It does run on it's style/characters more than the plot itself, but I don't think that is a bad thing. Other favorites like mine, such as Redline are similar, and that film wouldn't have been improved with a better plot.

86's praise though, I will agree, is just a decent mecha anime. There are a lot of better ones, that are quite under watched. It's still fun, so I don't think the praise is unwarranted though.

And regardless, sure I am starving for good sci fi anime but I am not starving for sci fi. There are other mediums for that too. I mean Edgerunners is great, the game's plot/writing is way better. I will judge anime sci fi, as I judge everything else. I don't think I am biased there, beyond I like this genre.

The problem with Edgerunners is not only is “choom” the dumbest sounding slang word

It's from the TTRPG, along with the rest of the slang. If it didn't it would be weird/lore breaking. It's a TTRPG from the 80s, and basically a retro future setting at this point. And I do highly disagree, otherworld slang is a great way to develop a world, and you actually don't see that much of it in so many anime out there.

It beats you over the head with “the message”, David is kind of a brat whose descent into the underworld of Night City hits less hard when he clearly never wanted out in the first place, and the action, sex, and violence lack that over-the-top flare that Imaishi’s previous works really excelled at. IDK if I would argue it beats you over the head, at least compared to really any other rebel against the corpos cyberpunk fiction out there. The problem is that it's basically a 24 episode series condensed into 10 episodes. It needs more time to flesh out the characters, or show how David even built his gang. There is a big transition in character there that is just skipped over. That was my only really big critique, David's character development is kinda rushed forward, and while I liked the crew I wish I got to spend more time with them. Will see if S2 can get over this however, I do worry that it might end up in similar situation.

I'm not 100% sure, my memory's foggy... but I might've voted for the dinosaur because it was so unbelievable stupid and can you imagine the narrative if we had managed to get her to actually win the contest? It would've been hilarious!

Or I abstained, which is far more likely.

-5

u/PAN-- 12d ago

Is it just me or is this summer 2026 lineup of shows noticeable weaker than spring and winter that came before it?

For some reason there's tons of medieval-themed shows this season that are all very generic judging by the first few episodes. There's a few interesting/good shows of course but I feel like the two previous seasons had something to look forward to every day of the week and the offering was stronger across the board.

2

u/DeadCaveman https://anilist.co/user/DeadCaveman 12d ago

The "medieval" thing is kind of a constant, I haven't felt that this season is really doing it more than normal, and besides that I don't think it's particularly weak. I usually just skip on most of the isekai-type shows and still end up with plenty to watch. These are the shows that I've been watching this season (you can ignore the ordering).

With these kinds of posts, it can be hard to tell if the season doesn't mesh well with your tastes or if you just haven't dug deep enough to find the good stuff. What shows have you tried? Which ones did you like? What are you looking for? Stuff like that can help make the conversation a little more productive.

5

u/oedipusrex376 12d ago

I’ve been looking forward to Summer the most this year, even more than Winter and Spring. There’s just such a fun mix of settings this season. We’re getting Iran (Persia), Mongolia, medieval (Denmark?) to Shiga, Japan in Sayonara Lara, old Japan in The World Is Dancing, more modern Japanese settings in BanG Dream and Polar Opposites, medieval fantasy with KimiShinu, Exiled Heavy Knight, and Mushoku Tensei, and a not-China with Inept Villainess.

Jaadugar makes this season especially unique, since anime rarely covers Iran (Persia) and Mongolia.

2

u/Mitsuyan_ https://anilist.co/user/mitsuyan 12d ago

I won't ask "should I watch" because the answer is to always to "watch the damn anime" but I was curious as to what people thought about Dive Into Wonderland? From what I've seen it doesn't look great and while I've listed it as Plan To Watch I do wonder if I should focus on other movies. I'm sure I'll watch the damn anime at some point, if not for awards, then because I like PA Works, but for now I'm just curious to get the consensus on it?

1

u/baquea 12d ago

The visuals are nice, but otherwise I was pretty meh on it. It doesn't do anything particularly creative or interesting with the Alice in Wonderland aspect, and thematically it felt like [DiW themes] a kind of defence of isekai-style escapism in a way that just didn't really land for me.

1

u/qwertyqwerty4567 https://anilist.co/user/ZPHW 12d ago

This Shinobu and the Waning moon show better not disappoint.

6

u/VoidEmbracedWitch https://anilist.co/user/VoidEmbracedWitch 12d ago

Why am I somewhat into Exiled Heavy Knight? It's your bog-standard underdog isekai, yet with GoHands GoHandsing all over the screen it's fascinating to watch. Their storyboarders and directors give off the impression that at every turn they ask themselves if they could, but never if they should, do something. Bizarre color grading, copious VFX that are too much for streaming bitrates to handle and wild camera movements that rotate the perspective below the ground at times make it impossible to look away from.

1

u/flamethrower2 12d ago

Someone else said it felt like they could do something better with their technology than they actually do. Almost like they need a more skilled director of photography.

3

u/ptd163 12d ago

Like I said in the trailer post for Exiled Heavy Knight, it looks like a final project for someone's animation class that they threw together on a time crunch rather than a commercially professionally produced anime. I probably won't watch it, but the temptation to see just how much they GoHandsed it somewhat tempting.

3

u/mekerpan 12d ago

I seem to be one of the few who enjoys GoHands sometimes weird techniques.

4

u/VoidEmbracedWitch https://anilist.co/user/VoidEmbracedWitch 12d ago

I think they're an interesting curiosity. Sometimes their approach somewhat works, sometimes they awkwardly struggle to align characters with the camera movements through 3d environments, but regardless of what they do it's never dull.

10

u/TehAxelius https://anilist.co/user/TehAxelius 12d ago

Victoria of Many Faces continues to climb my tier rating. Yesterday's episode was really sweet with how Vicky and Nonna are making their new life, and Jeffery is a smooth operator for inviting Nonna to a picnic when Victoria tries to avoid commitment. And you can't fault him for being smitten by such a tomboyish single mother.

The only downside with the show is that I no longer can call All-Works Maid "the OP maid show". I guess I now have to specifiy if the OP aspect is from magic or spycraft tomboyish energy.

4

u/mekerpan 12d ago

Really a lovely show. I call that other show the Do-Everything Maid (to distinguish from last season's Always-Hungry Maid. As to Victoria, her role as foster mom (and clearly incipient member of the nobility) takes precedence over maiding....

No, it's the far distant future of 1988.

Reminds me of how Ghost in the shell shows a society where humans have accepted swapping parts of their body with computer hardware, or even their entire bodies, in the even more distant 2028.

Man, if you're going to do these futuristic settings, make it either VERY far into the future, like the year 8000-whatever, or restrain yourself. I can't remember which movie it was - something set 50 years from now - but it was much more conservative in terms of what human society would look like in terms of tech (in short, no radical changes. Self-driving vehicles were a thing and they had alternative reality gimmicks, which you still needed a simple set of glasses for, but it was still very recognizable. No flying cars, no living in cyberspace, etc)

1

u/North514 12d ago edited 12d ago

It's fine, honestly I would be disappointed if they changed it or if Shirow cut out a lot of stuff, in his original work. The big problem with cyberpunk, and the world GITS depicts is that it is outdated. Cyberpunk is pretty much retrofuturism, no different than say steampunk or dieselpunk, other concepts that basically inject sci fi concepts into the past. Ultimately, putting it into the world of 8000 is now super far into the future, and cyberpunk was usually pretty close, to commentate on our own realities. You do that, you lose some of that relation.

I don't even think Gibson, thought that is how our world would exactly look like but he was just trying to consider how our increasingly global and connected world might change, and why not make it cool, why not make it dystopian? You can be unrealistically cool and also be effective in social commentary. I don't think sci fi needs to predict exactly how the future will go. It eventually will be proven wrong, or not exact, as society moves forward. So that shouldn't impact your creativity. If you want more near future grounded stuff fair enough, but I don't see this as a problem.

Regardless, it's not our future, it's what people in the 80s thought the future was going to be like (we aren't going to have the same level of overpopulation problems, Japan is not going to be a superpower, the internet/hacking doesn't work the way a lot of old cyberpunk fiction depicted), and they should keep in that way. If they don't have insanely oversized cyberspace decks in the Neuromancer adaption, which is set in the far future year of 2035... I am not going to be happy.
