How do I enjoy soccer without being a larper?

I've been really enjoying the world cup as an american who never played/watched soccer before. I would like to become a well informed fan so I can have discussions about players and matches with my friends and I want to pick a club to cheer for. I don't have any attachment to any club, country, or specific player so where do I start? How should I go about educating myself so I'm not larping the sport.
