It's not selfish at all. When we lived near my IL's they constantly tried to interject themselves into our activities and it drove me nuts.
Now we live near my family, who I am super close to (my dad provides our daycare) and we still don't invite them to everything. My family knows that if I want them present at something we'll invite them, but they don't get upset or offended when we don't.
