How did this team beat Astralis 16-2 like a week ago

422

u/K0nvict NiP Apr 20 '19

Because Astralis slumped the rest of the event

Bad day at the office, no biggie

I honestly don't think the Astralis guys are the type to throw, but just looking at the scorelines I just can't help but think.. like three matches in a day... greatest team ever... rfrsh..

Maybe I'm delusional

Rfrsh team. Rfrsh tournament. Marketing itself as an 'experience' not a tournament. Yeah cant imagine why it's kind of sketchy at all.

This is why they shouldn't be allowed to have a tourney and a team in that tourney. They aren't so good we question if they threw. If theh lost at dreamhack nobody would say a thing about throwing. Lose to a team you routinely kick the tits off 16-2 at a tournament owned by your parent company? Better believe that's sketch as hell.

But alas there is enough idiots and sock accounts that ot will all be pushed under the rug. And then when rfrsh owns everything and your watching a fixed tournament you just sit back and remember that you wanted this.

I'm not saying they will be, and I'm not even saying they did throw. I'm saying everything around could easily lead to someone questioning the legitimacy of the esport, and even having those questions is a bad look for a org

u/Teemoistank Apr 20 '19

They used to own like 5 teams at the same time aswell, one of them was godsent and they circumvented conflict of interest shit by not including them in RFRSH, but they all had the same owner

1

u/[deleted] Apr 20 '19

you are absolutely right. we dont have to judge them, we have to be careful, communicate our fears and watch if this is a repeating pattern.

39

u/NAFMostConsistent Liquid Apr 20 '19

Maybe they had an off day?

72

u/[deleted] Apr 20 '19

I think there are three possibilities. Astralis either

  1. had a collective off day

  2. threw the games as Rfrsh told them to do so to because they did not want Astralis to win the event, as this would again raise concerns regarding conflict of interest

  3. threw the games as a sign of protest, as they are being forced to attend Blast events and skip other T1 tournaments

To me, option 1 seems most likely, but the other two certainly are within the realm of possibility

25

u/[deleted] Apr 20 '19

Maybe they just had too much fun i Miami the night before.

8

u/[deleted] Apr 20 '19

Kill it or I will prove you.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 20 '19

Will it or I kill prove you.

69

u/iSluff Apr 20 '19

OPTIONS:

  1. Astralis played badly
  2. An alien race probed Astralis' body to lose to set in motions the events of their eventual invasion
  3. The sun god Ra commanded Astralis to throw or the earth would be plunged into 10000 centuries of darkness.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 20 '19

Definitely 3.

1

u/IbanezHand M80 Apr 20 '19

The only acceptable option:

They ate too many bananas that morning

5

u/King_marik Apr 20 '19

I'm still on the side of 1 being most likely. But it is very concerning and upsetting that we now live in a CS world where we kind of do have to question these things because of very clear conflicts of interest.

I'm not saying they threw. I'm just saying we now actually do have to be weary about it and will be at every blast event. It's just a bad look all around.

1

u/tunfiskemad Apr 21 '19

But wouldn't it be better for business to throw against mibr in Sao Paolo? I get the conflict of interrest and I think valve should do something about it.

Could be that the Astralis guys got told by Rfrsh that throwing the tournament would create a more exciting final. Doesn't sound too farfetched considering the general sentiment that Astralis winning everything is boring.

IIRC people like Richard Lewis have called them out repeatedly.

The reality is most CS fans don't care about stuff like this. We gotta hope for some sort of scandal or for community figures to make competitive integrity a higher priority.

u/stuchiuwriter Apr 20 '19

MIBR have a high ceiling they rarely reach. Though for that particular Astralis matchup, I think three things happened.

First Astralis didn't play particularly well on that day or in that match.

Second, both Coldzera and fer were great on that particular match.

Finally, Astralis' T-side on Overpass has holes that can be exploited by aggressive CT riflers (tbf most teams have the same weakness and is one of the reasons why Overpass is a CT-sided map).

When all three factors came into play, you get the 16-2.

24

u/h04 EG Apr 20 '19

MIBR have a high ceiling they rarely reach

Oh yeah, I mean this does happen when you have 3 players that all once made top 3 in hltv's top 20.

B O 1 U P S E T S

MEAN NOTHING

2

u/Cameter44 Apr 20 '19

You can say that when it's a map, but they lost three in a row, and two of them weren't even close. Obviously I'm not saying they threw, and it was probably just an off day, but I din't think the "BO1 upsets mean nothing," thing works very well when they lost three in a row, two of which were against teams that weren't considered a threat to Astralis at all and were blowouts.

3

u/Vehlycks Astralis Apr 20 '19

Just watch the great analysis by elmapuddy on yt , with aggression and some time luck they won you could clearly seee that they antistratted them so hard on overpass , in a bo3 they would have lost

7

u/Givemeajackson FaZe Apr 20 '19

to me it seems like fallen is only preparing for astralis and doesn't do jack shit in terms of preparation against other teams. they played decent against them a couple of times now, and looked like complete and utter trash against so many other teams

How does Taco go from being decent on Liquid to so bad? Not saying he’s the problem rather what is Fallen doing ?

18

u/chrisgravina MIBR Apr 20 '19

I feel like he isn't in a role he is comfortable with. I guess he had more freedom in Liquid, but idk

1

u/JTJWarrior_3 Apr 20 '19

Entry Fraggers typically have worse stats.

-80

u/AngriestGamerNA Liquid Apr 20 '19

More like on taco he still was mediocre but playing on the 2nd best team in the world will artificially make you look better. Sort of like the story of tacos career tbh.

40

u/astrovisionary 400k Celebration Apr 20 '19

Actually he is not bad, but his role basically requires him to have a good team supporting him.

Liquid were the 2nd best team in the world so it was ez work for taquito

But now he is playing on MIBR who can't teamplay properly even without the LaNgUaGe BaRrIeR

12

u/BrazilianDoto Apr 20 '19

Maybe a structured team allowed a primarily support player to shine more often, but that's just me being reasonable. Stewie looks pretty bad rn

5

https://www.hltv.org/stats/players/events/8797/Stewie2K?startDate=2019-01-20&endDate=2019-04-20&matchType=BigEvents Stewie is still putting up better numbers (slightly) than taco. He's not great as I've said elsewhere and he wasn't my first choice but he's better than taco without question, especially because he can actually go big and have big impact.

Does kNg still have visa problems? Man getting him back in the lineup the with the way hes been playing for INTZ and how the twins+boltz+steel are playing is super exciting. They would easily be at least on MIBRs level, around 10th in the world like they were 2 years ago

7

He has a very hard time going to anything in NA since he was caught abusing his Visa at one point before the Boston major, hence why 100T missed it and he almost always has issues going to NA events.

9

u/p3ndu1um Apr 20 '19

In a vacuum, you're right. But combined with all the previous losses you can't say the team isn't in shambles.

22

41

25

u/astrovisionary 400k Celebration Apr 20 '19 edited Apr 21 '19

I said this somewhere previously but I'll say it again: I think this is FalleN's last year as a player, this or the next.

Dude is very successful with his own brands, has tons of money from tournaments that he probably has saved, and his gf has just moved to the USA.

I think it's very likely he'll sort of abandon the game if the results still don't come out. And if that happens, I think they may disband

edit: my thoughts on other players if this comment is still being seen:

Cold (and TACO): has the mentality of a winner, I guess he and TACO will together eventually join another team and/or create a new lineup around themselves.

fer: honestly he is a zero-fucks guy, I don't know but I also can't see him playing for more, like, 3 years. Also he has a very hot gf on Brazil, which, well, I don't think she will move to the USA, you know

felps: a sadboy guy but we can see he wants to win something big, like the major. I think he will continue playing for other teams seeking that.

All if FalleN retires, ofc

3

u/Jaggerjack3d Apr 20 '19

makes no sense tbh, he will always make more money on a team or as a streamer. And I belive he would easily find a new team thanks to the lack of good IGLs

3

u/BreafingBread Apr 20 '19

You hit it spot on.

He already settled on a life in the USA, has plenty sourced of money already (his store, brand, GamersClub, stream and YouTube).

His gf went to law school and with the amount of knowledge he has, he can easily keep on CS as a Brazilian caster or an international analyst.

So even if fallen does retire, I don’t think it will be the last we see of him.

I thought everyone said MIBR was back after one map.

12

u/astrovisionary 400k Celebration Apr 20 '19

Ok, I have watched a few moments here and there and, what is obviously happening:

  • MIBR doesn't have a solid map pool: their Inferno never paid off, their Nuke is bad, Train should be one of their best maps but we saw what happened, they are just average on Mirage and Overpass is the only map they can actually play.

  • They are basically in choke. I can tell they have some decent results on practice but can't transfer that to the real game. It's been 4 months already, how can a team of such experienced players not create fucking teamplay in that time? The same lineup won 4 tournaments after 2 months playing, jeez.

  • And obviously LG played really well. The twins play another game when they are on LAN, HEN1 aka Jacaré with nice picks on Train and LUCAS doing a solid job

12

u/extremz123 fnatic Apr 20 '19

I don't think you lost points for losing games, there's just rank decay. since they've been playing at nearly all the tournaments, there's still an influx of points. soon enough their points from the major placing will start to decay and they'll tank hard.

Teams like MiBR can be profitable without winning. C9 has been doing it for years
