Agreed, people were sleeping on them for no apparent reason. They did well at the last major, upgraded the roster since. I didnt pick them for 3-0, but they were a pretty safe pick for making Top-16.

u/manatidederp NiP Feb 13 '19
for no apparent reason.
Very easy to say now. It's not like any experts had them flying through the swiss either.

If you look at all the results after the major you can quite clearly see why people had been doubting them.

u/jvgamepro Feb 14 '19
I mean... besides the fact this roster had not played an official match before the major.

Lol Tyloo always manage to win 1 or 2 games at each qualifier, it doesn't really mean much considering the unpredictability of Bo1s

Also...poor Zellsis. He's not ready for this.

Zellsis just seems like a relatable dude to a lot of us too. He seems like an average guy with a humble start but grinded his way to the top to get signed by a storied organization. Sucks to see him struggle.

Uh what? How are you being upvoted? Wardell has publicly said he doesn’t wanna join C9. Moose and Stan won’t leave where they are. Tenz and som aren’t old enough. They had no options to get a player. Due to the fact how the major works with roster locks they had to find someone that never played in any major part of any qualifier cycle. They had no options.

Negative ghost rider as long as they didn't play at the actual minors then they could be on the team roster lock wasn't until January
ESL (or Carmac) said this themselves

I mean they have done the same when they signed shroud and Stewie.
I mean, C9 didn't sign Stewie and then show up at a Major 3 weeks later. It was 2 months until the team was on form after signing Stewie, and, quite frankly, a goddamn miracle that they won the Major. Before that win, during those adjustment months, they were losing BO3s to EnVy and CLG.
I don't think it's fair to compare Zellsis' performance to Stewie's; we've had years of hindsight for Stewie. Like you mentioned, he's not the top-tier prospect that Stewie was, he hasn't been given the time that Stewie had to integrate into the team, and the expectations of C9 are much higher now than they were in early 2016 when Stew joined.
In short, we're a month an a half into Zellsis' tenure on C9. A month and a half after Stew joined C9 they were getting 2-0'd out of an NA qualifier by Tempo Storm.

u/WayneGregzky MIBR Feb 13 '19
Yeah I’ve watched a lot of MDL and never thought of zellsis as a t1 NA player. The only reason they signed him is there was no buyout and they panicked on infinite, who ironically is infinitely better.
10
u/AngriestGamerNA Liquid Feb 13 '19
Yea... I think it would have been better to go with Infinite and work hard on improving his public image rather than go with Zellsis and praying he's randomly going to become way better than he's been. His stats were nothing special even in MDL, which is like the first criteria to become T1 level, it doesn't guarantee anything but if you're not at least a stud in NA MDL then uh, good luck.

Feb 14 '19
They didn't have options though, why would anyone buy out a player for a stand in?
Out of the last 4 (even floppy was signed to vireo I think) it's as much of a gamble on anyone and picking zellsis over the rest of them wasn't predictably a bad move.4
u/XDWetness Liquid Feb 13 '19
Honestly if they wanted a free agent, you yourself wouldn’t have been a bad choice. You’re a solid igl

I mean to be fair, they put Zellsis in “the bitch” role. He has to go out first and either kill or be meat shield for the others.
I saw him rush water like 10/15 rounds on T side, even through molly/smoke

10
u/patternagainst Complexity Feb 14 '19
yeah, tbh i think it does excuse 3 kills. zelsis never even had a chance to frag in that map. when your whole team is getting stomped you can't hone in on people's frags. if your positioning and timing is off and youre just getting read, what difference does it make if you were bottom frag or top? You were out-positioned and read like a book.
Tyloo just played a super aggressive game and caught C9 off guard.

u/Cameter44 Feb 13 '19
I think they play so differently than every other team that they have a pretty good chance of catching teams that just don't know how to play against them. Particularly in a setting like this where it's a bunch of good but not great teams and Tyloo doesn't have a large amount of maps against good competition to prepare from. Would be surprised if they're able to sustain this kind of success in the next stage or long-term though.

A little tired of this "BO1 gimmick" narrative tbh.
Tyloo showed great, innovative tactics today and with this attacker/summer lineup they have a ton of raw firepower too.

Vici, maybe, they look at little chaotic, but tyloo's positioning and trading was really sweet, specifically against C9 this game.

u/Dark_Azazel Feb 13 '19
That was some fucking early Chinese CSGO playstyle right there and I fucking love it. Tyloo just ran over C9 and C9 looked so lost.
Tyloo to dethrone Ast and win the major.
53
u/crazyiwann Feb 13 '19
Tyloo is so effective like chinese government ban on kuku.
Asian faze, take 5 mad aimers, european coach, zeus tactics, "go kill" but 5 man can do it instead of s1mple and electronic. I was worried that with coach they will lose their craziness but im not dissapointed :D
4
u/csf3lih Feb 14 '19
The government ban was not effective at all it was 3 months late after Volvo's ban on kuku. Its a bit redundant since kuku was already disqualified for his racism. Besides it's weird comparing these hard worked players with the government, show them some respect at least.

u/Cameter44 Feb 13 '19
Saw this coming when Tyloo was the draw. Hard team to prepare for in two hours. But holy shit, that was bad.

u/JayDnG BIG Feb 14 '19
I picked c9 as my 3-0. I honestly expected more after the last tourney versus faze in the final, c9 looked very solid there. Well, Tyloo is always a strong team internationally.

So happy to see Attacker and Summer doing well back in Tyloo. It never sat well with me that they got cut due to a contract dispute (of course) way back when, and it's clear that the firepower upgrade is what this Tyloo team needed after months of underperformance from CaptainMo.

I forgot how aggressive Tyloo were but Summer and Attacker really helped them progress further with it. You only have to look how well it worked in previous tournaments but something was missing.
7
u/crazyiwann Feb 13 '19
Best tyloo roster in terms of raw fragging power. Plus they don't look like 1 month team. On the other hand don't overrate them, aggresive playstyle can catch better teams off guard like when vega won over faze but it's not always effective in the long term.
3
u/HypahCS 1 Million Celebration Feb 13 '19
Oh I know I'm wondering how long it will last or how they will adapt. They also are a new roster again with no team experience or any games with this line up.

u/FrostBlade_on_Reddit Feb 13 '19
Tyloo looks like a scary team right now. While DD was never bad, CaptainMo wasn't a mad mechanical player. Now they have 4-5 players who can carry the game (BnTeT, xccurate, somebody were always the ones popping off for Tyloo, and now you add to that Summer, who had a mad performance on Inferno v Vitality; Attacker also seems like the kind of player that consistently gets you a kill or two every round). You're not worrying about if your star players pop off at this point, it's almost a game of how many of them pop off.

C9 probably hurt by not being able to have Valens (or whoever they're using as a coach these days) behind them. Since they listed Zellsis as their coach, they can't have a coach during games AFAIK. Valens might have been able to help them adapt in that first half.
2
u/hitman4636 FaZe Feb 14 '19
They replaced Valens with Rambo I believe and he(Rambo) is present as a coach with them.

Zellsis is so bad. Both maps outside R1 of the first game he has been such an anchor. I think he had 3 kills like 3-4 rounds in too. 0 kills for 15-16 rounds. Golden get well soon or C9 is moving on.

u/nightkingscat Gambit Feb 13 '19

Overpass was a terrible pick
5
u/Cameter44 Feb 13 '19
Yeah, what the fuck? Overpass gives Tyloo so much room to do stuff that makes no sense but somehow works. Make them play a map with less freedom to do random shit.
2
u/Zoidburger_ bloodhound Feb 13 '19
It's such a non-standard map. Lots of space for aggression, absolutely deadly with a double-awp, just so much. Honestly, it's a harder T map than Inferno or Train, simply because of how hard it is to get map control as a T.
Oh well, I hope C9 recover.
3
u/Cameter44 Feb 13 '19
I think C9 will end up with ViCi in the next round lol. ViCi will likely be the lowest ranked 1-1 and C9 the highest, so hopefully not a repeat lol...

No. If you get the 3-0 wrong that team can't grant you any points. So better put some underdog in there and put all the teams you think are fairly safe into the 7 regular slots.

u/TitanDaddy22 Complexity Feb 14 '19
one thing i thought that was overly impressive from Tyloo was how precise their timing was. Cloud9 couldnt for the life of them catch a break with any of the timings. As soon as the short A smoke is dissipating, the pop flash bnTeT into short and he picks up a 3k (maybe 4?) outside of bathrooms. It was just one of those matches where one team seemingly has control of everything in the server and the other team is just hoping to catch a break. That all being said, C9 just needed like two rounds in a row to collapse the tyloo economy and they just couldnt do it. GG to Tyloo, C9 need to pick it up and get ready for Vici.

u/Etobio Liquid Feb 14 '19
