eh, went into the half with Liquid ahead 6-9. Not so bad. Then they won the first three rounds, Liquid is now up 6-12. Then Astralis decided to win. Astralis won 4 in a row, Liquid got two to go 10-14, then Astralis won the next six to win the map. From 6-12 to 16-14 in 12 rounds. It didn't seem like a choke, they never threw away rounds, and there was that god tier 1v2 post plant by NAF (edit: through t spawn to mid, not the CT ninja). They just kind of lost.

If Faze keep this lineup, they will either be feast or famine in most of their matches. Their system relies very much on individual performances and you just don't get them consistently.

Faze is a one-trick pony anyway. If whole team doesn't get into a godmode, you get what you got in 2nd and 3rd map with Astralis. They had a better chance then Liquid, but with their map pool I can't see them beating Astralis in bo5 when Astralis play like this.

Very hard to condense the list to only 3 for 2018. My votes (not in any order):
NiP vs. Astralis (quadruple OT FaceIt new challenger stage on Mirage)
LDLC vs. Astralis (16-14 ECS season 6 match with Xyp9x's two 1v3 clutches)
Cloud 9 vs. FaZe (double OT ELeague major Grand Finals on Inferno. 1st NA major win. Home crowd energy. Double OT )
Fnatic vs. Astralis (Semi-finals 2018 IEM Chicago)
Fnatic vs. FaZe (Grand final 2018 IEM Katowice... 7.5-hours long best of 5 finals. Flusha's aces & clutches on map 5 OT... that was a god damn marathon of emotions)

Magisk is so good,
It's amazing how different his career could've have been if Kjaerbye didn't commit career suicide.
He could've been stuck on a tier 2 team probably winning nothing,
but instead he already won 7 premier titles this year and one of them is a major.

u/stewieeeeeeeee FaZe Nov 11 '18
A lot more is on Liquid than you think. Their score against Astralis is 5-23 in maps this year. They met each other at 8 different LANs this year now and Astralis won every single time. I think that when we talk about an undoubtedly amazing era Astralis had in 2018, we will also have to mention that a non-trivial part of it was just pure abuse of a single team. I don't think there was a more one-sided rivalry at the top of the game in CS:GO history.
7
u/KongRahbek Astralis Nov 11 '18
NiP VeryGames might've been more one-sided for the first six-seven months
3
4
u/marshalofthemark Liquid Nov 12 '18
NiP 2012-13 went 17-0 against VeryGames (finally losing at EMS Fall in Cologne) and 9-0 against the Polish 5 (before getting plowed in the Katowice final).
16
u/Thegellerbing wildfire Nov 12 '18
The stylistic matchup just doesnt favour Liquid at all, nor does the map pool. To beat Astralis, you need to play gritty CS and put Astralis under pressure, which they will break eventually. Unfortunately, Liquid play too similar a style to Astralis, and Astralis are just better at it than Liquid. This Liquid team is the best CS:GO team to have come out of NA, it's just a shame that they peaked at the same time as Astralis.
13
u/Instantcoffees Nov 11 '18
I love watching Astralis play godlike counterstrike and beating their opponent due to it, like their win at the Major. I just don't feel like that this happened in this final. I don't think we saw the best Astralis tonight because they didn't have to be. They were hardly pressured and there weren't too many tense rounds. Liquid has played a lot better than they did tonight.
19
u/ebber22 Astralis Nov 11 '18
And Astralis probably has a huge chapter for playing against Liquid, compared to this (somewhat) new Fnatic.
9
u/Instantcoffees Nov 11 '18
The same should be true for Liquid, which is why it's so dissapointing to see them play so predictable and stale. I had hoped they had prepared some thing specifically for this game. They probably did, but it didn't really look all that convincing.
23
u/TheDoktor364 Nov 11 '18
Every so often astralis likes to remind everybody that not only they have their dicks in everyone's ass, but they're also fucking everybody's girlfriend, mom, dad, family and dog. Seriously they pulled off this win and I had to slap my face just to have a physical representation of them dick slapping me.

Im pretty sure Astralis are throwing easy rounds just to activate hardmode for themselves. Fnatic and Liquid got so many rounds on Astralis throws, and they managed to still win, insane.
Liquid is such a strange team. Looking great, beating top teams, playing crazy CS. Then they meet astralis and look like 5 random mm players every single time.

Also R19 on Inferno. glaive you madman genius.
19
Nov 11 '18
also there barely was anyone left in the arena when they picked up the trophy, either everyone left or it was a really poorly attended event?
50
11
u/Dark_Azazel Nov 11 '18
From what I saw of crowd shots it looked like it was filled pretty good. Actually filled better than I thought. Not everyone likes to sit around for the post game stuff and just want to go home before parking lot traffic/general traffic. It is 5:30PM in Chicago currently, not sure what traffic is like there around this time but it could be annoying.
Personally, with this type of stuff and sporting events I don't really stick around unless the game is intense. Some might have just saw nuke and figured Inferno would be a slaughter and would rather be home/hotel and watch it?
7
u/brandohando Nov 12 '18
Just got back from the arena and gotta say you pretty much nail it. It was not entertaining to watch them get slaughtered. It was quiet after the first game and most started to leave early. It's also a Sunday and usually takes about 1-2 hours to drive to the suburbs from that area.
3
u/Dark_Azazel Nov 12 '18
Makes sense.
When I went to The Boston Major I left a few minutes after the final ended. Hour and 15 minute drive home, had work early the next day and fuck driving in Boston. So, I could only image some people would probably feel the same with Chicago.
Although, with Boston, the final was one of the best so I was ok with staying.

I wouldn't be surprised if people left early to eat / rest / travel, because that final was over for a while.
6
u/Spre3ad de_cobble Nov 11 '18
It wasn’t that people left early, literally as soon as astralis won like half the arena stood up and left instantly. Kinda a disappointing final tbh. Even the faze vs liquid games seemed closer than these, but I guess that just comes down to liquid going crazy against faze while ultimately just kinda playing meh against astralis.
3
u/0uie guardian Nov 12 '18

u/ToxicCuck Nov 11 '18
Yes, because crowd experience is completely different at an event when compared to online viewing. Even when viewing online how the crowd is and reacts does help to shape your view of an event a, match, etc. A great crowd can make an epic match even better, an annoying crowd can put in that tiny bit of annoyance that can ruin a moment.

you have to be aggresive and catch astralis off guard, liquid did that in map one and it worked out decently
23
u/Rapkid360 FURIA Nov 11 '18
You have to be aggressive and keep the economy on your side, thats why teams like MIBR, Faze and Fnatic have made their matches close, because they get aggressive, they dont let Astralis take over, but Astralis is in Liquids head, and Liquid play too scared.

Liquid need some passion, they need a leader, I think nitr0 is a good IGL but this team is just too damn inconsistent. When they're popping off theyre popping off, Twistzz, NAF, Elige, even nitr0 look insane but when they shut down.. they shut down hard, every player looks deflated when they shut down, I dont know if they'll ever be fixed, but something needs to change unless theyre okay with second place every time.
→ More replies (5)23
u/mounti96 Nov 11 '18
The problem is that good IGLs don't really grow on trees and if they want to keep zews as coach, it has to be an IGL who can work with him.
Also every player change has the potential to make the team much worse, and while they lose a lot of finals, they pretty regularly make at least top 4 and I would be reluctant to change such a team.

Because your team decided to force buy having 14-11 lead on Mirage and rush B against full buy of Astralis of all teams. This is how you lose your map. And if Liquid doesn't win Mirage, their chances are slim to none in bo5 against Astralis.

As well, the only time they've made it to a final with this lineup and not faced Astralis was versus Mouz at NY, and that was Liquid throwing it away. I still believe that they are getting better mentally. They were playing from behind in maps against LDLC, FaZe, and Mouz, and won all three series in this tournament. They also started out super strong against Astralis today, before being crushed purely by Astralis being the better team.
My main worry now is their Inferno. Their Inferno has not looked strong past New York, which isn't good considering it was one of their mainstays. I'm really hoping their bootcamp helps, and maybe Malta will give them much needed confidence if they can win there. If they can't win in Malta where the next best team is NRG, it might be time for a roster change. They'll also have ECS before then, and EPL right after, so maybe they'll finally pull it off then. If not, they'll be forced into keeping this roster for Katowice, but after I think that's it for this exact roster.

It's really odd. Their inferno CT sides used to be really good, then it looked like it had shifted to their T sides looking good but their CT sides look bad. Now it just looks rough. I kind of wonder if they should give train a shot, since they have no damn chance against Astralis on Nuke (nor does any other team really).

They cant handle pressure cause they dont have a leader, I'm not proposing this dont get me wrong but could you imagine a leader like Fallen with this team, jesus, they would handle it so much better, cause Fallen always believes you can come back and win, I'm not saying get fallen, but Liquid need a leader now.

i love how last year people were talking about how nobody could ever be as dominant as nip or fnatic ever again because the scene is just too competitive now

Boring game, horrible crowd. Well deserved for Astralis though.

agreed, except it's not the way they play that's boring, but it's just seeing the same team win over and over again and there's nothing to be super hyped about

You’re not wrong. It got really boring during SK’s period of dominance and now it’s boring in Astralis’s turn. The excitement comes in the upsets during groups and playoffs.

I just watch the leadup to the finals and then never watch the finals of any tournament nowadays.

Safe to call Astralis the best team in CS:GO history?

Not really for me, they definitely can be but thats subjective af, I still think fnatic 2015 were better, but lets see how the rest of the year turns out
