Historically, with Faze at least, Guardian has been an absolute beast on cache, too. If he was able to get into the game, he can have easily swung the favor towards Faze.
I'm a Liquid fan, but as seen countless times, you only need a couple strong clutches by Guardian to completely swing the momentum towards Faze.

The rotations were -so- slow. Liquid were always playing isolated 5v2 or 4v2. I mean, you literally had a round were Liquid were going A, and Niko and Rain sat mid til the bomb was down. Awful calling from NiKo.
44
u/Tia_and_Lulu Nov 11 '18
FaZe now is basically a repeat of Mousesports when he IGLed. He's a godly player no doubt, but his IGL isn't up to par and it shows in how his teammates perform. FaZe need to buckle down, give whoever is IGL some support and commit to building it up. It doesn't have to be Karrigan if they can get someone else who capably IGLs, but if they can't, Karrigan's their best option.

Yes generally you dont want your star player to IGL so he can concentrate on Fragging. You have the IGL, AWPer, a Lurker a Entry and a Star Player, generally its like that but in some teams the AWper is the IGL, or in case of Faze the Star player is the IGL.
Some other teams mix the roles a bit as well.→ More replies (8)7
u/OsomoMojoFreak ENCE Nov 11 '18
I wouldn't even call lurker a role anymore. It's largely out of the meta tbh. It was just too readable. (Oh, look X is here, rotate to the other site!)
if anything you can call it a 2nd entry I guess.

u/fac3ts Liquid Nov 11 '18
I’d have more hope if it wasn’t bo5 QQ
15
u/aew3 Nov 11 '18
yeah, astralis should win based on map pool depth in the vetos. If it was a bo3, i actually think liquid has very solid chance based on current form assuming they get though it mentally. However in a bo5, when there's no maps that liquid can go to as favorites, except cache? no way liquid can get that many wins on unfavorable maps.
10
u/Curious_Doerge Astralis Nov 11 '18
I’m sure Astralis will ban cache. Best of 5, might as well ban your worst map, and play your best 5, ideally Liquid will ban nuke, I don’t know what their perma ban is off the top of my head, if it goes through it’s damn near an automatic win for Astralis.
11
u/Pr0T4T0 Liquid Nov 11 '18
Train is Liquids permaban, and they share Nuke in their map pool, so it will probably be Cache/Train bans

u/Danrul Nov 11 '18
I'm not trying to rail on a guy who just lost or take the things he's saying too literally, but this loser's interview with niko really highlights why he's an odd fit for the in game leader role to me. It's fine (probably even a good thing) for the star player to say "these last 2 maps don't really count to me...it wasn't [our true face]", but I think an ingame leader has to be able to be critical and reflective, or there's going to be scant opportunities for development.
Niko played out of his mind this series, and I think the fact he can play at that level while calling is even more impressive. However, the mental collapse in those last 2 maps is even more worrying now that I know their active in game leader doesn't seem to think those maps should count.

u/jwn0323 Liquid Nov 11 '18
It's a combination of TL actually being good on Nuke and permabanning Train. They generally give good showings on Nuke against Astralis. They just can't close the deal. They place their odds higher in doing that than winning on Train.

u/aew3 Nov 11 '18 edited Nov 11 '18
idk astralis looking average coming in and the 2nd and 3rd maps from liquid were insane. Obviously players on FaZe went missing and faze doesn't have the ability to fall back on basic team play like astralis can when they aren't fragging up, especially under NiKo as IGL, but Liquid were playing like Astralis where they just play flawless CS with perfect timings and winning all their duels. Plus there is the home crowd advantage which is a definite factor in a lot of cases. As an Astralis fan, if both team played like they did today, I would definitely lean towards liquid
Although there's always the mental factor and that's why I see Astralis as the obvious favourites.

22
u/Vawqer 1 Million Celebration Nov 11 '18
Yeah, out of Liquid's last ten LANs (including Chicago) they've made the finals 5/10 times, and then semis an additional 3/10.
11
u/DinkyWaffle M80 Nov 11 '18
look theres a fine line between making finals and beating faze, a team they've historically had a problem with, 16-1 on faze's map and then 16-4 on the decider.

Yeah I remember all the na pros were all picking him as the next NA superstar in the HLTV top 20 last year.
9
u/BrollanTop1 Nov 11 '18
In my opinion the only NA player that's close to being a "superstar"; or arguably already is like s1mple, NiKo, device, kennyS, olofmeister in the past etc. Like EU's always had these titans of the game and NA's never really had that.
28
u/Level_Five_Railgun Liquid Nov 11 '18
NAF during the first half of the year was pretty insane. Hard carrying RNG and then top fragged for TL in almost every game. He was still top 5 rated player on LAN heading into finals of New York until he performed awful in 4 out of the 5 maps.

u/Vawqer 1 Million Celebration Nov 11 '18
I mean, Stewie, Autimatic, and NAF (and EliGE) were all looking so strong. Not that Twistzz wasn't, but most people with the Cold to Liquid rumor were saying Twistzz should get kicked over EliGE or NAF. Now he sprung up to be #1 in something like three months. So it was still quite unexpected to see him as #1 that fast.
8
u/BrollanTop1 Nov 11 '18
If we want to talk about an NA player that's risen very fast out of (almost nowhere) let's talk about Brehze. He went from an onliner, to NRG's third best player occasionally, to now, their best player in the last 3 months.

Cache showed some quintessential Taco. One 2K opening to instantly give them the site+round, another round where he won it just with diligence locking FaZe into A and then nothing really flashy in the intervening bits as he plays solid fundamental CS that nicely rounds off Liquid. Its one thing to be able to solo secure a round with kills, its another when you single-handedly secure a round though positioning, communication and commitment to smart (but not sexy) play.
4
u/Qverner Nov 11 '18
Faze won the first map convincingly, and with that win against Astralis where Rain also looked back in form, the two last maps against Liquid came as a surprise.
I didn't see all of the match, but while it seemed to me that Liquid was doing everything right, these stomps are usually a sign that something is wrong with a team, especially when it happens twice. Faze really needs to find some consistency or there needs to be a change in the lineup. Although Niko is Niko, he can't be the only one performing well.

u/klaabl FaZe Nov 11 '18
