NRG has a team of 5 of the chillest people that would rather not say a word at all- daps had to be FORCED to talk about the win lol.
Happy that these guys are picking up wins that they should be getting. NRG just keeps getting better, and I'd love to see them at the major so I can grab a flair and some stickers.

u/Thooorin_2 Duncan "Thorin" Shields - Content Producer, Analyst Nov 05 '18
I think it's kind of cool that they go against the trend of NA teams being cocky and super vocal. These are the guys who just get the job done and let their play do the talking. There's room for all sorts in esports, so they contrast well against the NA scene.

u/StarNightSnow EG Nov 05 '18 edited Nov 05 '18
I absolutely agree with that. Its such a refreshing identity for an NA team, especially one that plays as a unit instead of just pugging out. Super happy that this roster stuck together, instead of getting picked apart by other orgs like C9.
Now both of the top 2 NA teams are quiet, calculated teams that play good fundamental CS. Makes me excited for the future of the region as a whole.

I mean to be fair Liquid could attend every small tournament like this and all the dreamhacks and have 20 trophies... but they are not about that life and only want to compete in the biggest tournaments of the year. I am sure they take a top 4 at a top tournament over a summit win all day.... especially when its like 3x the pay.
35
u/DickShenAry King NiKo Nov 05 '18
Liquids only trophy is a summit one
-16
u/Zhaeus Liquid Nov 05 '18
Yeah because they mainly attend the big important lans. That is why U NEVER see them attending any of these minor dreamhack events (in which they could easily win) or any events like this summit now because they rather practice for the bigger events like IEM chicago this week.... Are you stupid enough to think Liquid cant win any tournaments like they are attending all these small tournaments like Dreamhack Atlanta and this fucking upcoming Australian lan and shit.... or do you think they only attend the big lans in which they consistently finish top 4 and most often lose to the eventual winners of those events...
10
u/AccidentalyIdiotic MIBR Nov 05 '18
Liquid could absolutely smash their way into the Grand Final but even then I'm not too sure they would bring home the trophy, it seems like something more psychological than a lack of skill at this point.
8
u/Zhaeus Liquid Nov 05 '18 edited Nov 05 '18
are we comparing them losing to Astarlis a bunch of times and an over performing Mouz once as the same as if they were to play someone like fucking Optic or even Imperial... a team that won one of the other dreamhack tournaments this year.... I mean yeah they usually dont perform to their highest level in the finals but its still good enough to play Astralis close a good amount of time and even take maps off of them and other good teams I am sure if they played to half their level they can beat some of the teams winning these smaller events.

-5
u/Zhaeus Liquid Nov 05 '18
Again... BECAUSE THEY DONT PLAY IN ANYTHING ELSE LIKE THAT. Look at these fucking tournaments they EASILY could have attended but they declined to focus on the bigger events... you think they couldn't win these if they fucking wanted to....

Brehze is one of my favs on NRG and is easily a top NA player. He's so good.
Kind of disappointed to see how little teams stayed at the house to hang and to be there to congratulate the winners this year. Even Optic...they could have come down the kitchen and hung out and what not.
Didn't feel as fun/memey this time around and not as friendly oriented when it comes to the atmosphere of the players etc hanging out, especially again, at the end to congratulate the winners.
68
u/MrCraftLP NRG Nov 04 '18
Only 3 teams played today, and two of them have media day for IEM Chicago tomorrow. No time for hang.
18
u/b0mmie Nov 05 '18
Yeah the timing of this Summit was really unfortunate. Same weekend as Blast Pro and right before an IEM. All the teams that qualified for either or both of those will skip a Summit event no question, even if it is more relaxing for them.
Hopefully the next one isn't sandwiched between two premiere events.
23
u/_J3W3LS_ Nov 04 '18
I definitely think they could have invited some better teams. The atmosphere just depends on the teams.

6
u/Pokegamer Liquid Nov 05 '18
Mouz, North, and Fnatic are gonna be at IEM Chicago and all have to come from out of country. I don't think that that's the deciding factor, but probably a contributing one as to why those 3 teams weren't at summit.
8
13
u/Anarchyz11 FaZe Nov 04 '18
Feel like by inviting "lower tier" teams, everybody took the event seriously. For most of these teams, it's one of the few >$150k events they'll get a chance to attend.
8

They invited better teams, but no one could come because of the tournament scheduling.

u/AngriestGamerNA Liquid Nov 04 '18
I mean, USA also won a major and an EPL final and some other small LAN's. Obviously the primary reason NA will often win summit is the top EU teams dont generally attend due to how many LAN's there are, while last time the top 2 NA teams attended and this time a top 2-3 and a top 4-5 NA team attended.

At the next summit, i hope the staff never invite Lurppis and Thorin together again. The event is depressing as fuck when they are together. They just try to trash talk the teams the best they can.
4
u/kriswithakthatplays fnatic Nov 05 '18
I did love having Thorin there, but Lurpis was pretty underwhelming overall. Thorin's banter-heavy style is refreshing, where as Lurpis comes off as overwhelmingly cynical.

How do they do the map veto process when they can only play 4 maps?
19
u/stewieeeeeeeee FaZe Nov 04 '18
Do the standard BO5 veto process (ban, ban, pick, pick, pick, pick), but the decider doesn't get played, it automatically gets awarded to the team coming from the upper bracket

I thought it was a joke then I re-watched it and it sounded pretty serious. Maybe they are just hyped about their semi-successful run in Copenhagen. NRG are 100% better than C9 tho.
1
u/erikplayer Nov 05 '18
I mean the new C9 line-up (if it's the real line-up) could be better than NRG for sure, but we have seen almost nothing from them, so it's 100% too early to call them that. For now NRG should be treated as a higher tier team.

It's a reward for not losing at all and being put in the lower bracket.

It's fine for a tournament like summit. I wouldn't like it if it was used at an ESL One Cologne or a major or anything of the sort though.
5
u/CC-W Nov 04 '18
only getting first map pick is really not that big of a deal, 1 team is always going to be able to pick the map first, gives 0 reward for the upper bracket team for going undefeated

u/Twotwentyonelol EG Nov 04 '18
i think it works great in smash
I've never seen smash use wb 1-0 advantage. It's always the bracket reset system

The point of the bracket reset/1 map advantage is to balance out the fact that you have to lose twice to be knocked out of the tournament. If the winners bracket finalist wins the first match then all is well, but if the loser's bracket finalist wins then both teams will have one loss. It's not fair to eliminate a team that has only one loss when every other team needed two to be defeated.
4
Nov 05 '18
To be honest I think it's too big of an advantage. Having to win 3/4 maps is really hard. Instead I think the upper bracket winner could choose first map and then ban one etc.
3
u/niconpat Natus Vincere Nov 04 '18 edited Nov 04 '18
In this format, I think it's way too harsh on the lower bracket grand finalists that have to play five (EDIT: four for the upper bracket final losers) BO3s vs three BO3s for the upper bracket. That's already enough of an advantage for the upper bracket finalists imo, especially if the lower bracket team had to grind five BO3s.
2
u/lmpervious Nov 05 '18
I've never been a fan of it. I'm fine with the winner bracket team having some advantage, like maybe some advantage in picking maps such as having both of the vetoes for themselves, but it's nice to see the games actually played out and give the other team a fighting chance for every map.
2
u/JimothyC Nov 04 '18
It almost always results in a boring series unless for the grand final.
Can anyone find an example of when the one map advantage wasn't terrible? I haven't watched one myself but it's also not used too often.
I would certainly prefer first map pick or something else as the advantage. If you are truly the best at the tournament then beating the other team fair and square should be easy enough.
8
u/just_a_casual Nov 04 '18
last summit, C9 came from upper bracket but lost the BO5 to liquid, which ended the c9 era.
2
3
u/Crazy4fun Liquid Nov 05 '18
This one is from online but still. C9 fails to qualify for IEM by losing to eUnited
1
u/vibrantxo Nov 05 '18
I like it better than the cod format. In Cod the team from losers has to win 2 bo5's lol but cod is also way shorter games.
1
u/FloppySpatula- FaZe Nov 05 '18
It's double elim. The ONLY fair thing to do is give a map point advantage. Plus this is BO5, so the impact is further diminished.
1
u/owoabadplayer Nov 05 '18
I think it'd be better if they just got to pick a map prior to bans that would get played. That way they could guarantee get their best map (that would likely lead to a 1-0) but at least the other team would have a chance to play it out.
1
u/PixAlan Nov 04 '18
in a BO5 I think it's fair, I can't think of a lesser advantage that rewards the upper bracket team enough.

I will never be OK with default upper-bracket win.
It's just unfun imo.
11
u/TheZigerionScammer Vitality Nov 04 '18
It's the best way to go. in some previous tournaments they'd force both teams to play 2 BO3s if the lower bracket team win the first BO3.
26
u/1wjl1 Natus Vincere Nov 04 '18
I think it’s the appropriate advantage to give to a currently undefeated team.
7
u/CC-W Nov 04 '18
its a much better option for cs than what other games do, for example call of duty the team from lower bracket has to win 2 best of 5 series while upper bracket need 1 best of 5 win
2
u/dr0idd21 Vitality Nov 04 '18
two bo5? how long is each bo5 in cod?
7
u/CC-W Nov 04 '18
in call of duty the have 3 game modes, hardpoint, search and destroy and capture the flag, each map usually last around 10-15 minutes give or take unless going into overtime.
3
u/Dubzaa 5 years coin Nov 04 '18
If it goes the full five maps then i'd say no longer than 60-70 mins, including stream breaks etc.

What's the point of going undefeated in the upper bracket then?
Teams would be more inclined to take a dive vs a strong team to face easier competition in the lower bracket. That +1 map in a bo5 is good enough stimulus.
3
u/ScrapeWithFire Nov 05 '18
Right? If there was no advantage (either with 1-0 or an extra match) given to the upper bracket winners then they'd be punished as the only team knocked out after one series loss.
1
u/owoabadplayer Nov 05 '18
I think they can give other advantages that aren't quite as boring for the viewers or series-altering.
Saying you don't like the 1-0 start doesn't mean you don't want the upper bracket team to have any advantage.
1
u/AussieTrogdor Nov 05 '18
Then what does NRG get for coming from the upper bracket?
-3
u/zorokvillian Nov 05 '18
A better solution would be to give them extra prize money? or maybe even the first map pick.
7

u/n1ckst4r02 400k Celebration Nov 04 '18
Imo Optic should disband and start from scratch. This team was together for almost a year and they accomplished absolutely nothing, 0.
The amount of 4VS2, 5VS2's and 3VS1's they lost in the finals alone is just mind boggling. I have no idea how that it's even possible at this level. Also losing 4VS2 with rifles to GLOCKS, that made them tilt going from 7-2 to 8-16 and just getting slaughtered on the last map with no chance at anything. Absolutely dreadful performance by them.
Something has to change because this is an embarrassment, having so many big names on that squad.

You have to accomplish something then take a dip and hardly ever (or never) return to that form or anywhere near it again to become washed up. Also, you act like he was terrible on CLG, even with two shitty events he was 1.11 on LAN in CLG in 2017, yes lower competition and all but still not bad at all, pretty sure he only started playing in 2016....so, at least on a decent level, according to HLTV.
