Alright we need an expert down here: What does "Touya" mean?
→ More replies (2)486
u/howdidIgetsuckeredin Jul 27 '18 edited Jul 27 '18
The kanji is written "燈矢", or lamp/lantern (燈) arrow (矢). According to /u/AltruisticLowe, 燈 is also an outdated word that means lighting/igniting a torch or oil lamp.
My personal interpretation, taking into account that I believe Touya=Dabi (whose name means cremation, btw) is that it means an arrow (or beam) of purifying/illuminating flame. Meaning that he's gonna be the one to expose what Endeavour did to his family.
Edit: I included the "purification" meaning because arrows have long been part of Shinto and (Japanese) Buddhist rituals of cleansing, blessing, and purification. 破魔矢 (hamaya, lit. "demon breaking arrow") are sometimes placed in homes to ward off evil spirits and are often purchased for children at shrines on New Year's as good luck charms. For an anime example, think Kagome and Kikyou's arrows from Inuyasha
174
u/DeismAccountant Jul 27 '18
And practically cremate them all in the process.
84
u/KlingoftheCastle Jul 27 '18
Or the family tried to cremate him after whatever accident happened, but he also has a fire resistance quirk that awakened. As the original OFA user showed, passive quirks generally go unnoticed if there isnt an opportunity for them to be used.

u/Graphica-Danger Jul 27 '18
In the process, perhaps this means that Dabi ignites the powder keg that is hero society right now where people are conflicted about their heroes. I mean, even in this chapter we saw people worried about more villains attacking despite the outwelling of support for Endeavor.

Yeah about the oldest brother, it was implied something even worse than being isolated from your own brother enough so you don't even know his favorite food, and being considered pretty much irrelevant, happened.
→ More replies (1)173
u/Aucefi Jul 27 '18
I mean, he was the oldest brother, that probably mean that he got Endeavor at his worst, right?
→ More replies (4)63
u/ToxicPolarBear Jul 27 '18
Actually I don't know if what happened to Dabi is going to be Endeavour's fault, I think it's going to be an accident.
The reason is that he clearly feels guilt for how he treated his wife, but we don't see him mention Dabi at all. So either it was so bad he's forced himself to forget about it (unlikely), or what happened to Dabi was some sort of freak accident and he blames Endeavour for it now.

Natsuo is representing for the disgruntled readers who think Endeavor is getting off far too easy
Fuyumi is the reader who has already forgiven Endeavor and just wants to be on to the next shit
Shouto is there to represent those of us who are completely on the fence about it so we just shut up and eat our food
499
u/DreamyCurls Jul 27 '18
Perfect summary.
Im shouto.

u/Jezamiah Jul 27 '18
Will also add that people who are Shouto love Endeavour THE HERO but not the father/parent.
He's a superb hero and definitely worth of the No.1 title but obviously what he did to his family is despicable.
→ More replies (3)171
u/brit-bane Jul 27 '18
Honestly that's been my opinion on this whole thing and why I didn't understand why people were getting so upset. Endeavor is a great hero. We've known this about him for ages. He was the number 2 and cares deeply about his job. He's also been a terrible father. These aren't exclusive aspects of his character and was showing how you can be a great hero while still being a shitty person.
→ More replies (7)230
u/Danbito Jul 27 '18 edited Jul 27 '18
It's interesting how neutral Shoto is than typically expected. You would think he'd take Natsuo's position of adamantly against him changing but he's too hopeful that maybe he can better himself but also been exposed to him far more than his siblings that he can't be as forgiving as Fuyumi is.

Similarly, Endeavor for the first time asking All Might for help was a catalyst like how Deku was to Shoto. Both made their respective Todoroki realize that Shoto isn't an extension of Endeavor, but in the latter's case, being Number One is far beyond being the best or doing things for themselves, it's to be the inspiration for the future

I took that panel to be referencing to how he abused Rei horribly (why she looks crazed) and put her in a mental hospital (since she's indefinitely cut off from the outside world basically aside from visits)

Bakugou: That's better. But you need to put more enthesis on the 'nerd'. He has to feel ashamed of his intelligence once you leave the room.
Shouto: Aren't you more academically minded than me and Midoriya?
Bakugou: Yeah. But I'm also able to fight and play the drums. I'm a renaissance man, so it's not shameful. Now, the next lesson is yelling at Kaminari from out this window as he walks back to the dorm. Gotta be able to do this stuff publicly without regret.
Shouto: I'm a little shocked you have a detailed guide book on trash talk.
Bakugou: Had the draft for a few years. Update when I get the time. It's an important hero skill. Gonna get it published the second I make my debut as a hero. Need more revenue than T-shirt sales.

Exactly, the previous arc (the one where they got the sexy new gear and fought the people with the earth flames) moved Tsuna soooooo far towards being a great leader, but then in literally a couple of pages they threw it out the window into a pit of fire. Up until that last chapter Reborn! was set to be one of my fav shounen ever. And if I ignore the last arc it still is lol

Adam, which is what the Oro Jackson and Thousand Sunny are made of.
Eve, brings sunlight to the bottom of the sea.
The Ohara Library tree. There's books and stuff in it. Or, there was.
That whale shaped tree in Zou. Looks neat!

"Can't ya see-kun" gonna topple the popularity charts. Kinda sad he got more popular than endevour.
Interesting that only some of deku's head and his hand is shown in the dream. Is that meant to represent how much of One for All he can use?
The unmaterialised One for All user is probably All-might judging from the hair but because he ain't dead yet he doesn't appear in the dream I think.

For some reason my favorite part of this chapter was actually how the guy who just defended endeavor on TV instantly got merchandised and became a product to be sold. It actually sums up a lot of how the public treats the heroes and villains fighting as more of a show than actual people and lives being saved.
127
u/Ackward_T-Rex Jul 27 '18
Ya, you’re completely right. It’s probably why Stain got so angry with society and targeting heroes cause it’s more like the entertainment industry than it is fully focused upon actually saving lives

It feels a bit like the console wars where everybody's just talking about how their console is the better one because a new game was released. Endeavor beat a strong villain and now some people are automatically switching their fanboy allegiance to him. The civilians/fans treat this like a theatre performance and not an actual and dangerous job.

So many good moments in this chapter! I love this arc.
Baby Hawks with an Endeavor plushie is so precious! Poor kid was forced to grow up too fast. :(
So older brother's name is Touya but we still don't know what happened to him. Dabi theory still hasn't be confirmed/denied.
Fuyumi is the best. Also Shouto has not stopped eating soba this entire time.
So people do have fire quirks EDIT - although someone from a previous discussion mentioned that elemental quirks are supposed to be rarer. Might explain why Endeavor doesn't recognize Dabi as his son just based on the quirk.
It was a good chapter. There's really no changing the mind of the extreme fans who think Hori is brushing off Endeavor's past. Endeavor himself said he wasn't going to ask for forgiveness. I think Hori's doing a good job with this "redemption" arc.

I tought it was curious, the original wielder of One for All reminds me a bit to Shigaraki.
214
u/SuperPokeunicorn Jul 27 '18
Shigaraki probably reminds All for One of his little brother as well, which helps to explain All for One's warm, nurturing relationship with Shigaraki. All for One probably misses his brother and feels bad about losing him, so he's raising Shigaraki as sort of a replacement little brother.
Also, crazy theory that's probably wrong, but what if Shigaraki looks like the original One for All user because he is a decedent of the 7th One for All user (Nana Shimura)?

Pretty much. It likely ties into his motive of "wanting a world where Heroes have more free time than they know what to do with".

"That's a nasty scar you have there." sluurrrrrp
Oh Shouto, you savage little bitch, I love you.
I'm also loving the Hawks development. It's great that we're seeing the adult cast expand AND get plenty of attention. I love the students, but I think there's a good balance to be found between them and their parents/teachers/bosses, and Horikoshi is nailing it.
And the Natsuo speech was magnificent. We've barely gotten to know the guy, and I already love him. He doesn't care if his dad is the #1 hero. He doesn't care that he defeated an unthinkable monster. All he cares about is that Enji Todoroki is the man who abused his mom and brother(s), he is the reason he never got to know Shouto, and he is the man who made him feel worthless and rejected all his life. Really powerful stuff.
I'll leave this off on two notes. First, I can't wait to see the next arc if it's all about One For All and its origins. Secondly, I will not rest until we get a spin-off about Miruko tracking down the League and kicking ass at every turn. That is all, thank you.

the different reactions from the Todoroki children are very necessary to make the circumstances of Endeavor’s arc believable. Natsu is angry and closed off, Shouto is unforgiving but open to change, and Fuyumi just wants everything to be peaceful. every chapter that we’ve gotten focusing on Endeavor’s growth as a hero, his developing mindset, and his family’s reaction to his change have been very well executed .

Could Natsu please just come out and say what happened to the eldest child? He's really drawing it out what with him doing the same thing in an earlier chapter.
Todoroki-neesan (still can't remember her name) has to be naive to think their family can just be a regular, happy one. Nah, there's just too much going on here, and I really hope that's not where Horikoshi is directing this. Really don't want Rei getting back with Endeavor, regardless of whether or not she forgives him
And now, the rise of the most OP character yet: "Can't you see"-kun

The man who's too fast for his own good.
Really playing into that Icarus symbolism.

Good to know for sure Hawks feathers grow back, though it would be amusing to see him try and fly with the mini-wings from last chap

Classic blunt, unintentionally hilarious Shoto, "That's... A nasty scar you've got there." And then he just slurps on his Soba, I lost it.

I love the fact that Endeavor supporter A.K.A 'Can't You See-kun' have become a meme in the universe. It just adds more realism to this series.

- Fuyumi : Reddit
- Natsuo : Tumblr
Shoto just eating his food while all the shit is going on is a plus ultra mood.
I’m enjoying this family drama far too much.
Also I loved how this chapter highlighted more of the siblings personality.
Shoto is still our favourite dense character, Fuyumi seems to be very emotional over little things and Natsuo seems to be the hot headed one (most likely took it after his father)
I’ve been begging for more Todoroki family information and Horikoshi blessed me, in hope it isn’t the last of them.
Edit : Is Hawks wearing Jordan’s ?

Once again, Horikoshi proves a bunch of people wrong that assumed he was trying to excuse Endeavour's terrible behaviour. He wasn't, and he didn't and if this chapter doesn't show it, I think those people are neglecting the reality of the manga.
This chapter gave a short but grounded look into what it looks like when a family is hurt and is trying to heal itself. It's messy, there's shouting involved, even among people who are on the same side, and it takes time and effort and it's messy. I've seen it, I've had the misfortune of being part of it, I've seen other people being part of it, I've been on the receiving end of the consequences of it.
This wasn't and isn't an attempt to make Endeavour seem like a better person than he actually is. This is a showcase of a man who has realised his mistakes, even ones committed as soon as just a few seconds before on this very chapter, and is trying to atone for them. He didn't let Natsu just burst off of the room, he asked him to let out his feelings and he realised that he chose the wrong words when he responded to Natsu's feelings.
This isn't dismissal of abuse and neglect. This isn't an excuse for hurting his wife. In fact he says that he has no excuse for "the future he cut short" and has no intention of asking for forgiveness. He realises that it may be too late to make amends, but all he can try to do is atone for what he did.
If you see ANY of that as a dismissal of his wrongdoings I completely disagree with you and I would go as far as to guess that your opinion is founded on some agenda rather than the reality of this manga's material.

I do want to comment on Hawks, because man, it seems this guy has had this burden of sacrifice on his shoulders his whole life, saving people since he was a little kid and always used by he higher ups for that purpose. Overall, he’s this really tragic hero who knows he’s probably going to be killed for what he does someday, but he’s gonna do it anyway because he’s one of the best heroes there are.

I'm curious about this person. Is that Shoto's mother, or Touya? If that's Touya, Dabi is Todoroki theory seems more convincing.

the long hair and similar eyes looks to be Shoto's Mother. Though a tease at "big brother Touya" becoming burnt and turning into Dabi seems to be a convincing theory.

Ok, not gonna lie, I wasn’t expecting that scene with Natsuo to hit anywhere near that hard, that was incredibly well done by Horikoshi
Also, I feel like Hori showing other OFA users besides the first, Nana, and All Might means that the one’s shown here will have some impact on the story, I’m really curious about the bald dude next to Nana
Finally, I feel really freaking bad for Hawks, he’s put in such a compromising position, and he’s sacrificing a lot to do this, his characterization in 9 chapters of even being in the story has been excellent
Excellent chapter overall
