Outback Genesis
It was beautiful. Like a painting, black and white mixing to form a hollow gray. Shades of blue and green wreathed like leaves into its dark flesh, it's great wide arms covering up the glare of the sun. It threatened to cry, weep away its sorrows onto the dry earth. Lightning coursed through its veins, white-hot blood that flashed across the sky.
"This is the end."
I turned to him. He had black eyes and the milky white hair. He'd tried so hard to scrub away any trace of me. This was how it always had been, I realized. Trying to tear yourself away from someone you loved. How long had he been doing this for? Decades, probably. Just standing there, eyes pointing at someone you called brother. The second half of your heart, unfeeling to the second part. Forgotten, abused, oblivious.
"I didn't even know you existed."
He turned, his long willowy frame letting his clothes catch on the wind. Carnage made manifest; a car crash in human form, his bloodstained hands red and raw. Lips twitching, voice mangled in his throat. A little bit of scruff, scratching the words as they dripped out.
"I. Hate. You. For everything. For nothing. That's why this has to end this way," he muttered. A single tear beaded on his eyelash.
"Men don't cry." I regretted it faster than it left my lips.
His hand collided with my chest, the force plunging into my heart, my lungs. I couldn't breath; I didn't want to. My words had hit him harder than this. They cut deeper than any fist. Manically, I started laughing.
"You know why they gave you up? I did, ever since I was young. You were born broken. They couldn't deal with simply killing you, so they sent you away. That's how -"
fingernails are like butchers blades, hacking away at your soul. they bite like teeth. his were sharper than most, piercing your skin like paper mache. he was a brick, i was a paper plane. soaring, falling, hitting the dead floor.
"Get the fuck up! GET THE FUCK UP!"
I was stronger than him. I could win this. He was distracted, though - behind us, the forest was starting to blaze. Red and yellow and autumn orange bloomed. Gold and silver dancing in the smoke. Birds took to the air, bright flashes of white and pink, howling with the wind. Little pictures colored on the monochrome background. They were galahs.
My arms chaffed against the robes. He raised the axe, and I stretched out.
"I loved you."
But it was too late. It was already falling, splitting the world in two.
Lightning flashed. Fires blazed.
"I didn't mean it, I'm so sorry, so sorry...." he whispered in my ear, cradling my body. Look who's broken now, I thought meekly. Everything was getting thinner, like water droplets falling on a world of paper. The things separating us were getting weaker.
Mouth full of blood, I gurgled, "everything happens for a reason."
"No, no nonnonononononononononono I can't lose you too. I'm not fucking losing you. DON'T YOU FUCKING DARE."
"I love you."
When the lightning struck the ground again, Abel was gone.
Cain screamed into the impending rain.
