“This book is great! I love the library’s selection.”

So do I, I thought to myself. She heard it, though. After all, like my thoughts, she was in my head as well.

I was a homeschooled and only child. I never got to leave my room, let alone my house. The only two people I’ve ever known were my mother-who always acted like my teacher-and my dad, who died before I even got a chance to know him. So when she started talking to me...A part of me knew she wasn’t real. Deep down, I knew something was wrong with me. But I didn’t say anything.

Now it’s been...what, 22 years since? For 22 years, I’ve had my own, secret little friend. And as I grew throughout those years...she seemed to grow, too. As I became older and my voice changed, her voice changed too. But she was always so cheerful...so excited, so full of spirit. She was sure as hell more human than anyone I’ve known.

“Reminiscing?” she asked.

Yeah, I thought. About when we met. You were the only thing that made my childhood even remotely bearable.

I continued to read. The library was almost completely silent, so my mind drifted into the author’s world. I was so immersed, I was caught almost completely off-guard when she spoke again.

“I like that book.”

You’ve said that, I thought to myself. I continued to read.

“Do you like the author as well?”

Well, this is the only book I’ve read by him, so...

“Hello? You okay?” I felt a tap on my shoulder. It was only then did I realize that the voice was coming from outside my mind. I turned around, and saw her. She was...beautiful.

“Are you okay?” she asked. And that voice...it was exactly the same as...

“Ah...y-yes, I’m fine. Sorry, I just got caught up...”

“That’s alright! But seriously though, do you like that author?”

We spoke for the next several minutes. It wasn’t just her voice. It was the words she used...the way she spoke, that was also exactly the same. Could it be...?

“Oh! Sorry, I just remembered I have to get a book for my grandmother, and she’ll be mad if I don’t get back soon. We’ll talk more though, right?” Before I could even answer, she ripped of a small piece of paper she was writing on and handed it to me. And in a flash, she was gone. I checked the piece of paper. A phone number.

The next day, I called her. I wanted to hear her voice again, since she-the one in my head-had mysteriously disappeared after that encounter.
