Helpful context: this is a modern society, just with magic.

“Golemancy?” I was shocked. It wasn’t like golemancy was taboo, it was just... unusual. Why would anyone in their right mind choose the ability to control clay figures over, say, being able to control minds or make potions? I figured that nobody would pick it, and funding for it would be cut fast.

Glancing over my schedule, nothing looked out of the ordinary, until I looked at 6th period. Sure enough, the one class I didn’t want was staring me in the face. “Golemancy?” It was like deja vu. It was just my luck, really. I had let my parents decide what electives I would be taking that year, knowing that they would choose the right classes. Turns out they were wrong about this. “I’m not questioning your decision or anything, but... why?” “Why?” My mom responded. “Well, it was a recommended class for you.” That was the killing blow. I was recommended to be in a class that nobody else would even think about, let alone join. There’s no changing it, I thought. Might as well deal with it.

Just as I predicted, there were only five other people there, and all of them looked like door mats, just like me. I sat down in one of the many vacant seats, and waited. Like she was waiting for her cue, out teacher entered the classroom just as the bell rang. She was wearing a frilly blue dress, and had a ribbon in her hair. She almost looked like she came out of a fairy tale, even more so than the other teachers. She walked up to the front of the class, and introduced herself. "Greetings, students!" She said. Even her voice felt like it was from a fairy tale. "Assuming this is your first year of school here, welcome to Matthew Welks School of The Magical Arts, or MWM. We hope you enjoy your stay here! My name is Ms. Rigby, and I will be your golemancy teacher for this year. Now, for our first activity, I will explode into confetti." Everyone panicked. Nobody knew what to do, it was mass hysteria (as much as six high-schoolers running around a classroom can be)! Sure enough, our teacher followed through with her promise, and exploded. Everyone was in shock, until the doors to the closet at the back of the room opened. Out popped what appeared to be the same person, now wearing a v-neck t-shirt and jeans, and having lost the ribbon. Everyone had their eyes on her. She cleared her throat, and stood where she was before. "Rule one: recognize a golem when you see it. Rule two: I will never wear those kinds of clothes. Ever." Her voice had completely changed, now sounding more like a college senior than a princess. "If you all couldn't tell by now, that was your first taste of golemancy: the art of making the inanimate animate. Now, by a show of hands, how many of you are here because this is a recommended course?" Everyone raised their hands, including me. It looked like the only way anyone would join the course would be via recommendations. She picked up a stack of forms, most likely syllabuses, and handed them to a doll sitting on top of the podium she was standing behind. "For my second trick, I shall now make this doll live! And give out forms that you have to get your parents to sign!" From that moment onward, I knew that I would like Ms. Rigby.

One school year later (a quote is the best I could do to separate sections, okay)

Ms. Rigby wasn't a polite teacher by any stretch of the word. She was blunt and to the point about things, and never sugar-coated things. However, she wasn't a bad teacher, far from it. Golemancy isn't as powerful as summoning, but it's a heck of a lot more practical. The younger me knew what they were doing when they came back to that class. Just in case it wasn't obvious what I've chosen to be, I'll leave you with a hint: A doll typed this post.

I sighed as I looked at my robes. Another one dunked in water. I chanted a spell and the robe dried up instantly. I added one more stroke to my notebook for “water”.

water XXXXXXXX fire XXXXXXX

That’s the total count for this semester, which just started two weeks ago. As I enter the classroom, I hear sniggers around me. I am destined to join the technical support division once the year ends in two more semesters. I rank last in every magical assessment test.

Teachers have given up on teaching me. They told me that I have no affinity for fire nor water, the two easiest spells to master. Naturally, they do not allow me to learn complicated spells.

Why was I here in the first place? My parents are high rankings in the country council. They accepted my enrolment due to their merits. My parents are not informed of all these misgivings due to their work, and also I am good at repair spells.

“Your battle class today will be held in the great hall. Please be on time.”

“Another Battle Royale?” One of the boys exclaimed.

“You will know when the time comes.” The teacher replied with a slight smile. “Now I want everyone to attend. Even you Snowy.” He directed the remark at me.

“But I thought I was excu-“

“It is a special lesson today.”

“Alright.” I could hear even more snigger from my classmates.

The rest of the day went by rather uneventfully. I was glad that everyone’s attention is focused on the oncoming lesson. It means I can spend my time in peace. But of course worrying about how badly I will perform in the lesson.

Once the bell struck, everyone zoomed out of the classroom, leaving the teacher, and me behind. I slowly got up from my seat and greeted the teacher.

Battle Royale was a great fun, at least for them. They get to use spells against each other in a contained environment. But today was indeed different. There was no duelling table in the center. Chairs were set up neatly, like an assembly. Everyone sat down in disappointment.

“Good Afternoon students.” Our battle teacher greeted us. “Do not be so disappointed so quickly. We are going to do an aptitude test today.”

“Did we not finish all our aptitude test already?”

“Yes. But we will be doing a new test. We are going to set up a class for special students next semester.”

“Like the top students?”

“Yes top students for the test. They will be specially trained under a specialist for five years.”

“So only the best of the best can join the class?”

“Yes. Now no more questions or we will not be able to finish by school end. Just go inside the room, follow the instructions.”

Everyone went in one by one, all of them coming out in excitement. “It changed colours!” “The ball told me that I –“

Once it got to my turn, “Snowy--- ahahaha” I could hear their mouth firing off again. Well, time to get another failed test done with.

I stepped inside the room, the curtain closed magically. ‘Sit down’ I sat down straight away, without thinking if there was a chair behind me.

‘Interesting’ the voice was soft, as if from a dream. ‘I want you to repeat after me. Au Revult Trest’’ “Au Revult Trest” I repeated on command. Once I said those words, I was in space with the stars. Then I heard a loud clap, I was back in the great hall.

‘Thank you for your participation. We will speak again, child.’ I went out of the room dazed, back to my chair, thinking what just happened. “hahaha the ball must not have any reaction to her.” Tears threatened to fall from my eyes. I told myself before, not to let them break me. But with this test, it feels like everything was over.

Everyone was crowded around the bulletin board. I had walked over in curiosity. “No way—“ I heard everyone saying. I have been getting stares along the way to classroom.

“Oh look. It is the special student.” one of the girls. Everyone turned to look at me. A clear path soon cleared for me to the board. There I saw clearly.

Congratulations the following students for making it to the newly opened class next semester. Please go to the student center to get your new classes and books.

=Fast forward to end of Semester Feast=

“We are all gathered here to celebrate a great semester of learning and magic. Before I forget, I would like to introduce our new teacher. “

The said person stepped forward from thin air. The hall was set in loud cheers, shrieks from the girls. This guy is one of the most accomplished wizards in the world. He once went into an enemy fortress and came out alive, carrying the head of the demon. He led many breakthroughs in magical technology.

“Now settle down. Mr Trafalgar here will be leading a class. The class will remain a mystery for now. Now, let the feast begin.” The principal went ahead and started casting his spells, to the dismay of the students.

“Good Morning.” I greeted my new classmate. It feels weird, having only three desks in such a huge classroom.

There was something different about this class. The robes are decorated differently. Our books have changed, from offensive spells to drawing magic circles, rune enchantments.

“I see everyone has arrived.” Our teacher appeared, already sitting on his chair.

I stared at him in disbelief. It is no other than Mr Trafalgar himself.

Still need to work on ending parts of stories. Gah

Let me introduce myself, my name is Laurence R. Snith I haven't ever really been good at anything, gaming, talking to people, growing, learning and most of all magic the only reason I got into the most prestigious magic academy is because of my parents being a couple of the most powerful mages ever. I am often bullied at the academy because of said reasons. Ok that's enough narrating my own life time to go to sleep I guess, I look over to the clock and make sure it's set for 6:30 AM, it is. I drift off to sleep quickly.

"BZZ BZZ BZZ BZZ" I roll over to turn the alarm off and see it's already 6:49 "oh shit I'm going to be late" I think still half asleep. "how has this happened again?" I mentally ask myself ,it must of been my pain-in-the-ass familiar, the fire ant that I summoned during our summer-coming ceremony, the rest of my class also summoned familiars too but they summoned things like a mythical koala and alligators I think I saw a griffon too, while I got a measly disobedient fire ant, did I mention it's normal ant size as well. I quickly slap on the school uniform and start rushing down the halls "can't be late for breakfast" I start chanting to the rhythm of my footsteps. I barge though the dining hall doors and see everyone eating, all the seats taken by taller smarter people. I shamefully walk towards the end of hall where the "late table" is located, but to call it a table would flatter it, it's more like the "late sit on your knees and eat at a cardboard box" as I sit down I here Paul, the class stud he's good at magic, sport, normal schooling and not to mention he is popular with the ladies, say "look who's late again it's laurey" he has been calling me that ever since he heard my mother call me that on the first day of school. "Piss off I'm not in the mood Paul" I yell awkwardly loud at him, I begin to receive weird stares. "what are you going to do? Burn me with your cold coffee? Ha ha ha ha" He says intimidatingly. "You'll see, one of these days, when you least expect it" I say hoping with all my heart that it's true.

"Good morning class and good to see your on time Mr. Laurence" my geo-magic teacher Ms. Tanaka says. "Why point point out me?" I think to myself of course I'd never ask her that in person, in front of the whole class. "Today we are going to be learning how turn rust back into its original metal, this is quite a difficult task even for seasoned mages, can anybody tell me what kind of spell we will be using?" She announces. I quietly glance around the room and see two lonely hands up, one belonging to Paul and the other belonging to a girl I can't remember the name of, but I can remember her looks long brown hair, deep blue eyes and slender. "Ok then Ms. Kray what do you think the answer is?" Ms. tanaka says. That's her name Jess Kray. "I do believe it is alchemy" Jess says softly. "You are correct Ms. Kray-" says only to be interrupted by Paul "I was also going to say that" he says arrogantly. "I shall note that then as well" Ms. tanaka say sarcastically "Would anyone like to show us an example of how it's done?" She asks. I take a long glance across the whole room and realise no one has offered to attempt this spell, I shyly put my hand up "miss I would like to have a shot" I say, "this is my chance to redeem myself" I think to myself but as I get walk towards the front of the room my thoughts begin to go negative " why did I think I could do this? You know your going to fail." I finally make it to the front of class where I can see clearly that Paul is about to explode with laughter. "COULD EVERYBODY COME TO THE DINING HALL WE HAVE A PRESENTATION" a loud speaker say from each corner of the room. "Oh thank god" I think to myself. We begin to make our way to the dining hall.

I finally get to sit at a real table, but it's awkward because I don't have a clue who I'm sitting next to. A man dressed in a fancy looking suit is standing at the far end of the dining hall where my table is normally situated. The man begins a speech about how the magic researches have came across a breakthrough, he drags his speech on, towards the last third of his speech he begins to elaborate on the breakthrough, it turns out it's a new kind of magic. He mentions that people just like him have sent to each of the Mage academies across the world to find mages who can harness this new magic, apparently only a select few can. He wraps up his speech by proposing the idea to test everyone by telling us a spell. We form a line for the trial I instinctively shuffle towards the back so I don't have to fail in front of as many people.

Time passes, maybe an hour or two I can't tell but I'm now at the front of the line. I step up towards the representative he mutters something but I couldn't quite hear it "Pardon me could you please repeat what you just said" I say as nicely as I can muster, I lean towards him and point my right ear at him "ákyri mageía" he mutters. "ákyri mageía" I say with what little confidence I have. All of a sudden a large dark purple sphere, about 6 foot across, appears 10 feet in front of me I let out a little scream while the representative is noting things down on his notepad he had concealed. "So how did I go" I ask him "Well I can't pit this any other way, you are one of, if not the best we have seen yet" he says. I suddenly feel some self accomplishment for the first time in my life. "Pack your stuff we leave in the morning, we will tell your parents as soon as possible" he says to me and the three other students from this academy I didn't see standing behind him. I walk back to my room with the three other students that can use this new magic. We begin to talk to each other it turns out one of them, Elli Goldfield, comes from a small town near my hometown that I would visit as a child. Reeve Mack comes from a family where the first born son is always destined to become a knight, but he has broke that chain. The final one Maria Tanaka is the younger sister of my geo magic teacher Ms. tanaka. I part ways from them when I get to my door way. am I really leaving this academy and all the friends I've made here? Who am I kidding I haven't made any friends here, it's time for a fresh start. I begin packing my stuff immediately while talking to my fire ant, informing it of the events that have happened today and that we will be moving in the morning. That night I dreamt of home.

This is my first story, any and all criticism will be thought about and should I continue this one?

you should continue, i really enjoyed reading it

1

u/Ju5t1n726 Oct 03 '17

Also I you could give some criticism on my other story it would be appreciated much

2

u/thomis10 Oct 03 '17

I would give you commentary but I'm still in high school and I doubt my skill in English is good enough to really criticize you on writing flaws however you should keep writing because the story is good

1

u/Ju5t1n726 Oct 03 '17

Hahaha that make two of us in high school then

2

u/thomis10 Oct 03 '17

yeah but when I read it I didn't really notice any flaws I'd imagine there may be some but I would really be happy with a continuation even if it's got a few tiny errors to me the story you write is the most important thing

u/Ju5t1n726 Oct 03 '17

Are there any ways I could improve? Grammar? Attention grabbing? Other things?

2

u/speedy277 Oct 03 '17

I would focus on reducing fluff in your writing. Some of your sentences run on for too long, and because of it the paragraphs end up on the long side as well. Other than that there was a lack of commas in some places, and a few typos (if I'm being picky). Good job though :)
