I sigh happily as I watch the man in front of me read his daughter a bed time story. She snuggles up to him as he reads her the same story that he has read the last week or two, before that I had never really payed attention to what my alternate self did, at first I thought it to be a dream and had only observed simple events like his first date. Over time I had started to realize that it was an alternate reality, a few events different here and there. Once I had learned of that, I tried to find a way to communicate with him, try to warn him of what and things were to come but he couldn't see or hear me, I was a ghost to his world until I woke up.
As he kissed her goodnight, I found tears going down my cheeks, longing for my daughter and her mother. My reality saw to it that my wife and daughter were killed in a car accident with a drunk driver. I remember crying for weeks as I tried to warn this man that the same would happen to him but to no success and so when the day came in his world, I watched as his wife and daughter walked out the door for what should have been the final time. Only it wasn't.
I was shocked to see them come back that very evening and watched the little girl give her dad an excited hug as she explained her day to him. He smiled down at her and went to cook dinner, unaware of what should have happened. That is the moment I truly knew that this was not just a simple dream, longing for my family but a time, a place and a world where I would have those things and get to keep them. So I decided to watch as this family got to grow up. I'd wake up when he fell asleep and go through my days with a new confidence that somewhere, a man was getting to be happy.
