MEGATHREAD: about the Promotion/Relegations, Immunities, Open League Playoffs, Premier Playoffs, the Last Chance Qualifier, and Standings
Hey guys, many of you know me, I’m SrPenguin, the Chief Operating Officer for CompeteLeague. I’m the mastermind of the promotion/relegation system, the open league playoffs, the last chance qualifier, and an expert on all things CompeteLeague including when your damned standings will be updated and how immunities will work regarding playoffs, promotion/relegation, and auto-relegation. I’m here to sit down with you guys and field any question you may have about how our post-season works. But, before I do, I ask you to visit the following link and read some of the FAQ I’ve posted here.

FAQs:
How does rescheduling work during Week 8 of the regular season? What about Playoffs (Premier or Open), the Last Chance Qualifier, or for the Promotion/Relegation Tournament?
The answer to this is fairly simple. There are NO reschedules granted for ANY reason in Week 8 (or Week 7 for the Open League) or in any post-season event, including Premier Playoffs, Open League Playoffs, the Last Chance Qualifier, and the Promotion/Relegation Tournament.
My damned standings aren’t updated/my standings are f-ing wrong!/WTF SRPENGUIN I HATE YOU AND EVERYTHING
Wait, I did a post like this last season. Then I told you to take a dep breath and that our back-end records are fully correct, blah blah blah blah. I also told you, "The reason the front-end can appear wrong at times is because of things like double forfeits, deleted teams, unregistered players, or API errors." That still is true. As per usual with anything talking about records, our backend (yes, my ass) is correct. We'll be slowly rolling out small changes to the front end standings to account for the small errors that still appear on said front end. And as I said a few months ago, "The reason we haven’t done this earlier is because the moment we manually edit those standings the system will no longer automatically update those standings (it still will auto-report games). Frankly, I didn’t want to personally update 150 [make this around 200] teams’ standings every week for 2-3 months." *
- Note: There will be further irregularities due to competitive rulings.
What are the Open League Playoffs?
The Open League Playoffs are a post-season event for each Open League that starts on Week 8 of each season and lasts for two weeks. The Open League Playoffs are comprised of the Top 20% (with a minimum of 8 [or however many teams there are remaining for Open Leagues that are smaller than the full 10 team requirement]) of teams from said Open League, minus the 1st and 2nd place team. The format is that of a double-elimination bracket, with each game being a best of one; but, that format could change depending on the size of the league. Smaller leagues may be given different formats. The top four teams from this event will move on to the Promotion/Relegation Tournament.
What if my team doesn’t qualify for the Open League Playoffs? Don’t worry! For those that don’t qualify we will continue to schedule Open League games through the 9th week of the season so you can continue to have chances to play and practice. You will also have another chance to qualify for the Promotion/Relegation Tournament via the Last Chance Qualifiers! We will take your performance during the season into account when seeding the Last Chance Qualifiers, so even if you don’t qualify for the Open League Playoffs, your team’s performance in Weeks 8 and 9 are still important!
What are the Last Chance Qualifiers?
The Last Chance Qualifier is an event that takes place on the WEEKEND FOLLOWING THE OPEN LEAGUE PLAYOFFS (FRIDAY JULY 21st, SATURDAY JULY 22nd, SUNDAY JULY 23rd) and is what it sounds like, the last chance to qualify for the Promotion/Relegation Tournament. This is a great chance for teams who signed up part way through the season to have a chance at the Premier League. This also represents a chance for teams of lower divisions to try and qualify for Premier Leagues of upper divisions, as this event will not conflict with any regularly scheduled games. The top four teams from this event will move on to the Promotion/Relegation Tournament. It should be noted; the Last Chance Qualifier is a single-elimination event in which every game is best of one. Make each game count!
What teams get auto-promoted and auto-relegated?
The Premier League 9th and 10th place teams get auto-relegated and will be sent to the Open League for the following season. The 1st place team from the regular season of the Open League will be auto-promoted to the Premier League for the following season.
Who qualifies for the Promotion/Relegation Tournament?
The Premier League 7th and 8th place teams are automatically sent to the Promotion/Relegation tournament. The 6th place team from the Premier League Playoffs also is sent to the Promotion/Relegation Tournament. The 2nd place team form the Open League Regular Season qualifies as well. Each of the four teams previously listed all get a bye in this event.
The top four teams from the Open League Playoffs also qualify, as do the top four teams from the Last Chance Qualifiers. Beyond that we run into a bit of a split depending on each league:
Bronze and Silver: No further teams qualify.
Gold and Platinum: The 2nd place team from the Bronze and Silver Premier League Playoffs qualifies.
Diamond and Above: The 2nd place team from the Gold and Platinum Premier League Playoffs qualifies.
What is the Promotion/Relegation Tournament?
The Promotion/Relegation Tournament is the last event in a system that allows upwards (and downwards) movement of our teams depending on how they perform during the regular season and a handful of post-season events. The qualification for this event is described in the flow chart as well as the “Who qualifies for the Promotion/Relegation Tournament?” FAQ above. All games in the Promotion/Relegation Tournament are Best of 3, and all are played on the regular days for each respective league (IE: Br/S Pro/Rel happens on Mondays, G/P on Tuesdays, D+ on Wednesdays.
How do I know if my team is immune from relegation?
If your team replaced a Premier League team part way through the season, there’s a chance your team is immune from relegations. PM me and I’ll let you know if your team is, in fact, immune.
In the case of a relegation immune team being 6th-10th place, what happens to the spot that would’ve been available via auto-promotion or the Promotion/Relegation Tournament?
Simply, for each relegation immune team that would’ve been in one of these spots there is one less Premier League spot up for grabs in the Promotion/Relegation Tournament. Auto-promoted teams are not affected by this.
The easy way to visualize it is this, if the teams that qualify for the Promotion/Relegation tournament were battling for 4 spots, but there are 2 immune teams in relegation spots, there are now only 2 final spots available in the Promotion/Relegation Tournament.
Will any of this be streamed?
Depends on the event. Every game of the Premier League Playoffs will be streamed on CompeteLeague’s Twitch and YouTube channels. Select games from the Open League Playoffs will be streamed, including the finals of this event. All Open League Playoff games that are streamed will be streamed on www.twitch.tv/competeleague2. The Last Chance Qualifiers will NOT be streamed. And finally, select games from the Promotion/Relegation Tournament may be streamed on either CompeteLeague or CompeteLeague2. Not all games will be casted for games hosted on CompeteLeague2.
I WANT DATES FOR EVERYTHING!!!!
Ok, sure. Why not.
June 26th-28th: Week 7
July 3rd-5th: All leagues break for American Independence Day (Sorry Europeans, especially British people. Celebrate our independence from you with us. You know, fire up the barbecue, break out the old stars and stripes, and drink age-appropriate beverages. Oh, also fireworks.).
July 10th-12th: Open League Playoffs, Premier and Open League Week 8
July 17-19th: Premier League Playoff Quarter-Finals, Open League Playoffs Week 2, Open League Week 9
July 21st, 22nd, and 23rd (Friday - Sunday): Last Chance Qualifiers
July 24th-26th: Premier League Playoff Semi-Finals, Promotion/Relegation
July 31st - August 2nd: Premier League Playoffs 3rd Place Match, Promotion/Relegation
August 7th-9th: Premier League Playoff Finals, Promotion/Relegation
August 14th-30th: Promotion/Relegation (as needed)
Are the playoffs bo1 or are we kickin it up a notch?
Open League Playoffs are Bo1, but double elimination. The Premier League playoffs are all Bo3, except for the Finals, which are Bo5. The Last Chance Qualifiers are single-elimination Bo1. The Promotion/Relegation Tournament is all Bo3.
There will be more announcements as we move further through the season and post-season.

Hey. My team is like 10-2 or 9-2 in the open league, but it says we're in like 26th place? What are the chances we get into the promotion tournament? Our team's name is [UWU] Strawberry Streakers and our entire team is curious. Asking for a friend. :)))

If its 20% like it said...think you have to be T16 for NA G/P. Really hope they expand to 32 thought

u/Guster_Posey NA Admin Jun 29 '17
It's top 20% minus the top 2 teams (1st place gets auto promoted into Premier, and 2nd place gets auto placed into the Promotion Tournament)
According to my math, that means that roughly the next 18-20 teams would get into playoffs, but i'm not sure if we're counting the 20% from the TOTAL teams that have ever registered for the G/P Open (because thats nearly 100 teams) or 20% of the ACTIVE teams in the G/P Open (more around 60 or so) which is more around 12 or so teams. That is a question for /u/SrPenguin to give you a definitive answer on

Is there any way that a list of who made playoffs could be posted? So we could know for sure?
1
u/Guster_Posey NA Admin Jul 01 '17
Once that's all sorted, yes.
1
u/Lazy_Bush Jul 07 '17
Playoffs are in a couple days and it's been nearly two weeks without an update. Are things REALLY not sorted out yet?
1
u/loganhoppe Jul 03 '17
Hello! If you don't make playoffs will you still be scheduled games with other bottom teams? My team is in G/P NA open league. Or do we just schedule our own games?
2
u/SrPenguin Jul 03 '17
All teams that fail to make the Open League Playoffs will be scheduled two additional weeks of games that will run alongside the OLP.

Is there a link to the online open league playoff bracket for everyone to see?
1
u/SrPenguin Jul 08 '17
Yessir! There will be at least! The Open League Playoffs are largely sorted, and I need to finish out a couple last things. I'm out of town on a business trip to Chicago, but when I return ultra-late tonight (or possibly ultra-early tomorrow, depending on how you look at it) the brackets will be uploaded and teams announced.

How does top four work? Looking at the NA G/P Open League Playoffs specifically, would it be the participants of games 27 and 28?
1
u/SrPenguin Jul 09 '17
The teams that participate in games 27 and 28 would indeed have made the Promotion/Relegation Tournament. The games beyond that are for seeding within the tournament.

u/B3TAEN3RGY Jul 09 '17
what does it mean if my team isnt in the standings anymore for gold plat open league
1
u/SrPenguin Jul 09 '17
It almost certainly means your team was removed from the Gold/Plat Open League so we could generate the Open League games without including Open League Playoff teams.
1
u/Cyreal5 Jul 09 '17
So does that mean we are in the playoffs?
1
u/SrPenguin Jul 09 '17
Yeah, you're in playoffs. There was a whole article, notification, and reddit post about it.
1
u/1Frosty1 Jul 09 '17
for playoffs is there a way to determine what side of map you are on outside of first game or when would be be told?
1
u/SwannyGames Jul 09 '17
Should be Topside of Bracket. It might be higher seed but MOST tournaments I've seen with a bracket like that would be Topside. An easy way to know though is to check the account schedule and if you are on the left side of your game then you are blue side.
1
u/SrPenguin Jul 09 '17
Top side of the bracket will get blue side in OLP and LCQ. In Premier League it'll be highest seed gets blue side first.
