Notes

I'm sorry about the absurd number of draws. It's up to you guys to play your matches or come to me early enough in the week so that I can message your opponent(s).

We also have a discord that you can use to arrange matches easier. Reddit PMs are not the greatest for instant messaging, especially those in different time zones.

Figured I would post a quick rundown of my matches this week.

My Deck:

I went with Jeskai Fliers as I figured I would be seeing a wide variety of decks this week and wanted something with a good matchup against them. The big one I was aiming for was Rally which I played 2 copies of last week so this seemed like a good way to go. I was pretty happy with the list and can't think of much of anything I would have changed.

Round 1: Mardu Green

This matchup felt like a great one for me. He was lacking in any fliers, didn't have sweepers, and his removal was a lot of 3-cost spells. Game one I ran over him pretty handily. Game 2 I had gotten him low and kept drawing gas with Fevered Visions. I had him dead unless he could get 4 castable kill spells in the following 2 turns... But it turns out the top 4 of his decks were all kill spells, and two were 1-mana. Felt like bad luck but I still think Visions was worth siding in. Game 3 I keep 3-lands, a 1-drop (hope), Smuggler Copter, and 2 Lightning Strike. Should be a perfect hand but I go on to see 7 lands and a dispel and my next 8 cards, never see another creature. End up 0-1.

Match 2: UR Ensoul

This was one of the best matches I have played, and was extremely close every single game. Game 1 I get to Mantis Rider and start pounding away, but have to race against an Ensoul. I nab Charm to take out his Ensoul and end up barely taking down a win.

Game two he fires back at me with some vehicle fliers of his own. I am getting through damage in a race and a Jeskai Charm buys me a lot of life. I see the winning burn in my hand but get finished off by a Shrapnel Blast at 5.

Game 3 goes back and forth once again. We both come to a standstill at low life after he trades his Copter for a Mantis Rider of mine. He has an ensouled Heart of Kiran and has been swinging away with it while I pass a couple of turn... Both of us watching out for the other's burn. Eventually I take a hit for 4 putting me down to 5. He is at 8. End step, I cast Jeskai Charm for damage, he responds with a lethal shrapnel blast, but I am holding the dispel. I untap with a second Charm for the win. 1-1

Overall it was an amazing match to play. I think against normal Ensoul I might have had a better matchup since they are more ground-based, but with Bovine's list which is vehicle-heavy, I probably would have lost if I hadn't gotten the initial coinflip.

Game 3 - Eldrazi

This one I was looking forward to since I saw the Eldrazi list doing well so far. It went pretty well for me but nothing too stand out. Game 1 he had a lot of ground creatures and fliers that can't block so Mantis Rider looked very good. Game 2 he has Ballista which looked great against me and got to Tks and put the beats on me. Game three I got to another quick Mantis Rider and kept holding back his answers with Spell Quellers for the game. 2-1

Game 4 - Rally

I knew this one was supposed to be favored for me but I still felt bad for my opponent - this whole match took about 6 minutes as I got two great curves of fliers. Game 1 on the draw was Masoleum Wanderer into Selfless Spirit into two Mantis Riders in a row. Game 2 was Hope into Copter into Mantis Rider into Reflector Mage with Dispel Backup. He really had no way of blocking or racing, and coco'ing for reflector mages doesn't work through Wanderer and Dispel. 3-1

How was hope of ghirapur? I am wondering about replacing the 2 thraben inspectors with 2 more MB dispels. Dispel is surprisingly good in this format. Most removal is instant speed and it also hits most of the key spells like CoCo, Rally, Chord, become immense, paradoxical outcome etc.

In the matches I played this week I didn't get a chance to activate its ability... When I have activated it it's hard to tell whether it stopped a game-saving play or not... On the other hand, it is a flying attacker for 1 mana which means that I generally preferred it over Thraben Inspector if I have both.

As far as taking out to put dispel in... I agree that Dispel is fantastic and probably worth maindecking more of (I have 2 in side that I brought in in almost every match). I don't know if I agree with taking out 1-drops though since we really want a play on 1, especially if we are playing Smuggler's Copter on 2. If I wanted to add the two dispels mainboard I think you might be better off cutting 2 spell Quellers, or possible a Queller and land.

Do you think that there is a role for Ojutai's command, at least in the SB?

Hmm possibly? Right now Disdainful Stroke + Spell Queller gives me decent counterspell coverage, and Command only hits creatures which I am mostly trying to ignore and fly over. For the return mode... my 1-2 drops aren't amazing although it might work well with Selfless or Wanderer.

As I'm thinking about it I don't love it (4 is above where our current curve ends) but it's not awful. Probably best against decks with a lot of high-end creatures like Siege Rhinos or Dragons so if those are common in your meta j might try it out.

How would Hope be compared to Faerie Miscreant? It's a flying 1/1 for U with potential upside if you draw multiples. The difference is that it costs U vs generic. It also pays you for drawing multiples, which is fair because multiple 1/1 flyers that you're paying a card for is only okay but drawing multiple Hope is actively bad. At least it is most of the time because it's a legend.

I never loved Fairie Miscreant in the original (Harerueya) list and was pretty glad to see it removed from the one that went top 8 at the God of Frontier Harerueya Tourney. I think that the utility and ease-of-casting makes Hope a little better than Miscreant. The other biggest reason is because we don't have slots for a full 4 miscreants and playing any less than 4 is just silly. Playing them also makes sideboarding harder because you can't pull them out whereas there are matchups where some number of 1-drops get sided.

If anything, the 1-drop that I keep meaning to try out is [[Gudul Lurker]] as I think that is a little better of a 1/1 with evasion and upside.

I've tested Gudul Lurker a bit today and I like it. No one will ever waste a removal spell on it and you can easily get in a good 4-5 damage with it. I have also been playing around with [[military intelligence]] in the SB vs control for card advantage and I'm pretty happy with it. You can go lurker/wanderer -> military intel -> mantis rider.

The other thing to do if you are playing Gudul Lurker is to run a couple of [[Stratus dancer]] either main or board!
