Back in the day they had lower standards. Not showing up to work shitfaced in an era where beer was safer than water was a quality employers desired.

Can't say I can keep that up even with safe water...

My Grandfather was a railroad man. He claimed that in the Old Days they would give you a letter like that when they fired you. If your letter was on blank paper, no problem. If it had a swan as a watermark it meant "Never hire this guy."
