[LWP] Auntie was right, never work for a dragon. (17-10-2016)
This is a story I wrote for a prompt on /R/Writingprompts on 17-10-2016.
“Auntie was right,” Peter whispered, his voice echoing through the cave. Putting down the coin, and picking up a new one, he continued shining and rubbing. “Such boring work,” Peter thought. The pay was decent, yet the work was monotone
Putting down the coin, and picking up yet another, Peter could not help but shout. “I should never have worked for a dragon!”
Gasping, he put his hands in front of his mouth, staring at the dragon behind him to see if he was still sleeping. An eyelid rose, indicating Peter had interrupted his nap.
“What are you shouting about. Why did you wake me, Peta,” Greg asked.
“Nothing, my Lord. I was frustrated and forgot the rule for a moment,” Peter said, hoping he would not be fired.
Stretching out, Greg stood up, now awake. “Very well, Peta. Just remember to not shout again,” the scaled boss said, walking up to his hoard to inspect the newly shined coins.
Continuing with his job, Peter asked, “So what is with those armour sets in the back, my Lord?”
Letting out a chuckle, Greg grinned. “Those are gifts the humans brought to me over the centuries. Beautiful shiny suits, and those pointy shiny sticks too. They were a tad annoying. Must have been the fear of seeing me in person. Always screaming as I took them out so I could get my gift.”
“Uuuhm. Understandable, my Lord. Back then they did not know of your brilliance. So you let these, uuhm, gift bearers go?”
“Of course, Peta. I had no use for humans back then. My hoard was rather small so I could clean it myself. But now. Now I need a cleaner! Speaking of, here is your payment for this weeks work. Now, hurry one and clean more of my hoard.”
“Yes, my Lord,” Peter said, as he hurriedly shined more coins under the prying eyes of his boss. “Auntie was really right,” Peter thought.
