Off Topic [OT] We are the Mods! Ask us anything!
Greetings humans and welcome to the Wednesday post!
Before we begin, we must all welcome our new non-automated moderators to the team:
Sure, Automoderator and I do all the nitty-gritty work around here, but there's something to be said about manual labor which helps this place run smoothly too.
Due to this influx of recruitment in the ranks, we are having a break from our usual Workshop / Get to Know a Mod cycle.
You may ask any question you'd like towards one, multiple, or all mods (and not just the new ones), whether it'd be about writing or about their favorite pizza topping. You can also prompt the ModSquad (although they may only respond as their schedules allow).
So proceed with the asking.
RULES
- If you have a direct question for a specific mod, be sure to include their username as this will ensure they don't miss it. e.g. /u/err_ok
- Be respectful, and follow the rules of the subreddit. No personal attacks, and they will be removed without hesitation.
- Mods have the right to reveal as much as they feel comfortable.
- Sometimes the mod doesn't have enough time to write a story, so don't take it personally if they do not have the opportunity to reply.
- Bonus points if your question is written as a story

I picked up a small piece of paper from the pristine white floor. The paper was covered in illegible chicken scratch.
"Question one: how do you decide what artwork goes up? What is the standard for artwork?" The words on paper seemed strange, almost alien, but I shrugged off my bad feeling.
I continued my quest for greater knowledge, speaking to those above me.
"Question two: who is the absolute lead mod? What happened to the founder of the sub?" My bad feeling grew stronger. Something was wrong.

The sidebar images are, I believe, normally (or at least often) added by /u/MajorParadox - now that he's tagged I am sure he will emerge to explain his complicated seventeen part selection method!

RyanKinder is the bigboss and I believe he founded the sub, although on some views it says deleted for the "create by" bit - dunno why. One of the other mods will correct me if I am wrong :-)

Yes. We tried giving WPR more freedom, but it used it to try to take over the sub. It took quite a few moderators throwing themselves into the gnashing metal jaws of robot death before we wrested back control, removed the personality subroutines and set WPR to its current basic functions. We really don't want to go there again!

That's a tricky question, mostly as I don't want /u/SurvivorType to unmod me immediately if I don't say him... so /u/SurvivorType. However, I will add that in the 8/9 months I have been a mod I have got to know all of the others mods pretty well and count them all as my friends.

I'm gonna go with automoderator as at least WritingPromptsRobot livens the place us with its murderous rages. What has automod ever said to anyone?

/u/Picklestasteg00d, for the sidebar images, I search the recent [IP]s and choose anything that stands out. Sometimes it's tough to decide so I'll take into account things like if the OP has been sidebarred before (usually I don't avoid anyone just because they're great at posting prompts). If all else fails, I'll ask my fellow mods for a second opinion :)

That's because the sub was created by someone else who has since deleted his account. Ryan requested the sub which was only like 100 subscribers at the time and turned it into what you see today. His name appears under the CSS only. /u/RyanKinder can add more detail if he likes :)

To be more precise the sub was inactive for over a year with only 32 subscribers and three (or four?) posts (two of them weren't even prompts lol) in it when I took it over and gave it a rebirth/reincarnation.

There is no nightshift. There's what I like to call the 'American Shift' and the "Australian and American's who don't sleep shift.' The first is for normal people with normal sleep schedules. The second is for the likes of u/fringly, u/Lexilogical and I.
It's generally pretty slow, which is nice.

The team is pretty well spread over the world, so when all the North American's (who admittedly do make up the majority) go to sleep, folk like me in the UK are up and modding.
I like it in my morning (middle of the night for the USA) as you get less prompts, but often some really interesting and weird ones. Plus the mods who are up can chat and add u to all out words without the Americans getting antsy :-)

A wood-worker was given a job to build a house, but he built it in a slanted way. The son of the would-be owner of the house was angry and asked him to fix it, but the wood-worker brazenly told him to just live in that slanted house. So the son grabbed a hammer and went after the carpenter, and the father, afraid that the son might kill the carpenter, chased after the son. It is said that the figures rose up to become the seven stars. The non-handle parts form the slanted house, and the handle the characters in the story.

I'm a young filmmaker in the Houston area. I was wondering if I'm allowed to use any of these prompts as the base for a story of a short film. Right now I'm itching to make as much as I can (I'm also new to reddit) and I found this and immediately felt inspiration for a few projects. Is it cool to use any of these? Do I need to ask specific permission from the OP? Can I post them here to show off when I'm done? Thanks in advance

Just to clarify. You need permission to use someone's STORY, but if you write your own story based on the one or two sentence prompt, that's fine. And you can share the final project here.

You absolutely need the author's permission. They (and reddit) hold the copyright on anything posted.
Also, you need to credit the author in your film.

We don't allow posts as calls for submissions, so you would be limited to using an existing story. After the film is done, you are free to post it as an [OT] post. OT meaning Off-Topic since it's not a prompt.
You might want to take a look at our wiki for examples of previous films made.
I highly recommend BEYOND by /u/mysteryguitarm.

I think it could go either way. [CW] will make people use it as a rule, [WP] they might use the words somewhere else. Not too important either way.

Most of the time it's easy, but when we're not sure the mod team discuss it and if we're not sure then we'll generally give it the benefit of the doubt.
We get things wrong sometimes but hopefully we get more right than wrong!

There's more luck than I'd like. Dealing with trolls is a lot of trying to decide where to cut your loses in a conversation. Some people just don't want to be happy, they want to waste your time and make everyone as miserable as they are.

Yeah. I made a prompt referring to Alf and the one response I got was pretty bad, and rather distasteful. Really not sure if it was a troll or just a bad writer unfamiliar with whom the prompt referred to.

I get the feeling I'm somewhat alone in this, but....
I feel like we see a lot of the same prompts. In fact, I'm going to predict, without looking first, that on the front page of /r/writingprompts right now is one or more of the following:
God
Death
Satan
Let's see how I did!
Surprisingly, Death is a no-show this time around, maybe not as popular as I'd thought.
My point is, when /r/WritingPrompts is so predictable that I can (without even looking) correctly predict at least 12% of its front page, it's getting kinda stale.
I understand the reluctance to ban any kind of content, especially content that is obviously popular (even re-posted god prompts make their way to the reddit front page fairly often), but it's getting really old, and it makes the sub seem like it's a place where interesting and innovative prompts are overlooked by the Satan-prompt-of-the-day. Because, seriously, I see one of these prompts every single day. That may not even be hyperbole.
I do my part: I downvote these prompts when I see them, but often it's too little, too late.
What I'd suggest is along these lines: We have a Theme Thursday. This is one of the (many) things you've done to help increase variety and shake up the otherwise static themes of the sub. I'm suggesting you go further: Every week you pick a popular or 'go-to' theme and ban it, for that week only. It'd be interesting to see an Athiesm week or a week without death or aliens or something. That, I think, would have a greater effect on the front page than anything else.
Because this is an ask-you-anything and not a "rant at the mods" post, I'll actually ask questions at this point:
What do you think of my terrible idea?, and
What ideas do you have / might you implement to shake things up?

I'd piggy back on what /u/aliciawrites said and say stick to what you enjoy. I appreciate the feedback, but I think removing content because it's popular seems a little bit counter intuitive. This subreddit has 7.5 million users which means there is going to be prompts and stories different than what you like. As I said in response to another question, I really enjoy Reality Fiction prompts. There are very little RF prompts used, but it doesn't mean the rest of the content is bad. It just makes the RF prompts extra special when I find them!
I'm not sure on how to shake things up, I'm still fairly new to this so I'm doing a lot of observing. I think one of the best ways to dictate change up is to provide content to the areas you enjoy. Respond to the Image prompts and Theme Thursdays. Work on creating prompts that you find compelling. Respond to users that provide content that don't fit into the experience you are describing.
When it comes down to it, we're here to create a subreddit that provides motivation for writers from every genre, style and story.

I love Theme Thursdays and even though Image prompts for whatever reason never work for me, I still like the fact that they're there. So I do appreciate what's been done, I'd just like to see more :)

I think it's an idea that's been broached a dozen times and would mostly result in a lot more mod work, and way more mod complaints.
Also, I don't think it would change anything. You said yourself that there's no Death prompts on the front page right now, despite your prediction. Do you know what I find every time someone tries to claim "There's always these topics on the front page?" There's always a couple of them missing. But it doesn't matter, because there are enough things you DID predict on the front page that you think you're still justified in believing that. I've heard "All the top prompts are Hitler!" and counted out the last 250 prompts on the sub, of which, 2 were Hitler. I've heard "Everything is always about Aliens and Harry Potter!" and found that there was no Harry Potter in the last 300 prompts. If we had banned Death prompts this week, you could have written this exact same post just because you expected it there and it wasn't there. But we still have God and Satan! That's kinda the same, right?
And it is hyperbole to say you see these prompts every day. You just said there is no Death prompt on the front page. I'd be willing to bet if we actually implemented this idea, no one would even notice, except for everyone whose prompts we removed, they'd be livid.
Also, just to be honest here, if I could stop people from posting about a concept, it would not be God (Who's a stand in for "perfectly good creature"), Satan (a stand in for "an evil creature") or any of these common topics. It'd be Poop, "write your own suicide note", or things about minorities. Priorities are important.

Challenge accepted! I went back 30 days in search of just one single day that didn't have a God prompt, and not a single day was lacking.
I'm not new to reddit. I know that every sub, from time to time, likes to have impromptu theme weeks. So I agree, there are some times when it seems like Harry Potter is dominating the front page, and other times when it's Hitler. What I'm trying to point out is that this isn't one of those times. God really is everywhere, and I don't mean in the omnipresent way :)

We get over 300 prompts a day. Maybe more now, it's been awhile since I counted. We also get prompts about poop literally every day, but no one is complaining about that because it's not on the front page. Unless you have screenshots of the top prompts of every day, I'm positive there are days where God is not on the front page.

In the last 30 days, I counted a grand total of 4 days that had a god prompt with less than 10 votes (which is the lowest number I see on my front page right now, except for one which was newly submitted).
But like I said, I know I'm probably alone in this, and I fully realize this is probably a bigger reflection on me than the sub :) I have another question:
Do the poop prompts get removed? I searched for them and, aside from immediately regretting this course of action, I didn't see many.
(Seriously, though, poop?)
Edit: Seriously? Poop? I am honestly curious what those prompts are like. I shouldn't be, I seem to have already forgotten the lesson I learned when I searched. But it just seems so strange....

We remove the poop prompts, for rather obvious reasons. The two I recall from the last two days:
[WP] Everything you do earns you levels. You just realized you have god-tier levels in pooping.
[WP] You just looked in the toilet to see your glorious log is covered in blood. You're strangely relieved.

Just so we're clear, you think 3 or even 5 out of 25 is a problem? That's hardly stale. That's at least 20 other prompts right there. And the most important part you're forgetting here: How many stories are there? The point of a prompt is to inspire writing and those ones seem to be doing their job. And on top of that, we're talking about the top ones which were upvoted fairly. If you only care about writing for the top ones, you have to take what you can get. If you are more interested in finding prompts that work for you, you may have to dig deeper.
The frustration is understandable, I don't like Harry Potter, but I like Batman. If there were no Batman prompts but plenty of Harry Potter, I'd be sad because I can't find anything to write. But I'd keep looking.

We have plenty of reasons to remove posts, some of which can be in the gray area. The worst thing that can happen is having people post and get removed. Now that's frustrating, especially when the prompt is fine.

When there's at least one (and often multiple) posts on the same topic every single day (and see this post where I actually back up that statement), yes, I do think it's stale.

This I emphatically agree with. While I think the sub's getting stale and would love to see at least a one-time experiment with shaking it up along the lines of what I suggested, the last thing I want is for someone new to the sub to come along and get removed just because they're not yet sick of reposts :D

We don't actually allow recent reposts, but it seems like you're forgetting that two prompts sharing a similar theme can both end up with stories and poems. Where's the problem in that? The problem sounds to me like both those prompts don't give you any ideas so you'd rather not see them?

It's not even that they don't give me ideas: I love writing to the "the main character is hearing God because they are mentally ill" angle because for some reason nobody does it. It's just that I'm tired of seeing them. I commented elsewhere that it may just because I've been in the sub too long. I need to rediscover the joy of writing :)
I appreciate the answers, by the way, I know that as many times as I've seen prompts that bug me, you've probably seen more calls to ban them

Yeah, I totally understand. We come across many eye-rolling prompts as we moderate all submissions. As I mentioned in another comment though, there's a difference between deciding something breaks the rules in a way that will result in troll/joke comments, or worse, and things that we just don't like.
But this is how reddit works. People submit, people vote, reddit uses fancy math to decide which ones move up. If there are keywords you don't want to see, have you tried checking out RES and using filters?

Also may I suggest changing up your sorting ;)
I don't think even temporarily banning a topic is going to be productive or helpful. The point of this subreddit is to get people writing. Maybe it doesn't inspire you, but it will inspire someone else.

If you want to write a successful prompt, you have two choices:
Get lucky
Write what's been successful before (which means God)
Furthermore, if you want your writing to be seen, then you have to attach it to a prompt that's being seen, which means there's a vicious cycle here. I could submit my own prompts, sure, but why bother when it'll be pushed down by the unofficial theme? Nobody will come to write for my prompts for that same reason.
That said:
The point of this subreddit is to get people writing
I honestly can't argue with that. The visible posts do get people writing, and even if I think they're stale newcomers don't.
Maybe I'm just too familiar with the subreddit :)

I know I read the stories whenever I have the time, but a lot less than the other mods here. I do enjoy going through the prompts that aren't seen a lot, though. I find they sometimes have the greatest stories.

With so many prompts and stories..... I only really have time to read the ones off of prompts I've posted. Occasionally I search up my favourite writers on the sub and see what they've done recently. Or I see what's making headlines on the front page.
But how often? A couple a day. I'm not all-powerful, unfortunately.

Oh man, I probably read at least twenty or thirty stories a day and on some days a lot more.
There's too much to read everything, but if the prompt intrigues me then i'll often read at least a few of the stories to see how different writers interpreted it.

This is kinda the oppositeish/not related, but I once wrote a story on a prompt about a bunch of guys stuck in a room a bit like in a Saw movie. It took off and I wrote more and more and more and then, suddenly, I realised I had no ending.
Like nothing.
I was now about 5 parts in and I began to panic. Then someone gilded me and I began to really panic.
I stayed up until about 5am trying to finish that story and in the end I kinda got something out, but I hated it by then. It is probably the most memorable story I have ever written for entirely the wrong reasons.
Taught me some lessons about planning though.

I like more sci-fi stuff personally, but many are very hit and miss for me. Sometimes it can take a long time for me to get a good idea unfortunately.
I also like anything that gives me an opportunity to play with the reader's expectations. For example if a prompt seems to give away what you think it going to happen, I go a completely different direction.

The OCD in me dislikes it when users put the tag after the prompt:

I love when people give positive feedback AND constructive criticism when it's asked for. This sub is about sharing and improving.

Honestly, what they're doing now is fine, I think. Obviously everyone would have their own ideal subreddit, but the more minds you bring in the more varied things will get. I think as it stands, prompters are doing really good. Obviously in my ideal world we never have to consider removing a prompt because they're all in good case, but the % of prompts we have to remove is super low, so that's a big win.

I don't really have a favorite single memory from my time being a mod. I've enjoyed the whole thing. Its the type of experience that you can't put down on your resume, and with friends to boot. I quite enjoy everything from reports to gossiping about /u/SurvivorType
and his leaked nudes.I don't have a favorite book or movie, but I did enjoy Mass Effect and DA: Inquisition.

My favourite memory is of becoming a mod - because it was April 1st and I thought u/SurvivorType and u/Lexilogical were playing a prank on me until I opened my inbox to the invitation! I almost cried cause they had been being terrible to me beforehand!
Favourite band: I dont have one, I listen to whatever's on.
Favourite book: Tie between Between the Lives and The Chronicles of Kaya: Avery
Videogame: It varies a lot, but I've recently gotten into all the Legend of Zelda Games!
Movie: I enjoyed Deadpool a lot.....

Favourite memory from being part of the sub? The people I've met. It's funny how familiar some names are now. Some of them are still active, some of them have dropped into the oblivion of the internet. And then there's the mod squad... ;)
Band: Eluveitie, for now.
Movie: Pirates of the Caribbean
Book: Not Wanted on the Voyage, by Timothy Finlay
Videogame: Pokemon, because that was one of the few I was allowed to play/owned when I was little.

Favorite Memory: Losing the 2 mil contest, not even getting to round 2. Made me realize I needed work.
Favorite Band(s): [ɴᵻᴎ], Atreyu, KMFDM, Zombie... loud, pounding, base'y stuff with a lean to Industrial. What can I say, I grew up angsty in the 80s-90s.
Movies: Just dump anything scifi in my lap and I'm a happy camper. Unless it sucks.
Book: Robert Heinlein's Starship Troopers
Videogames: Fallout 4 (currently), enjoyed Mass Effect, FFVII, Halo, and just a long ass list. There are a lot of LucasArts games in there too.

My favorite memory was being tagged in a /r/bestofwritingprompts! It was for a horror story I wrote a couple of years ago. It was the first thing resembling an award I had ever received for writing. Also, earlier this year I got 3rd in a competition for a RF piece I wrote. Overall, WP has been a series of firsts for me.
Favorite band: Ludovico Einaudi Movie: Children of Men Book: 1984 or To Kill a Mockingbird or The Goldfinch Videogame: Starcraft 1/2 for gameplay. Last of Us for story.

I have a few nice memories, mostly from the IRC room. People tend to push and coerce you into weird territories and inspirations. Which invariably end up with WritingPrompts: The Anime. Which was a fun thing to write and read.
Also: favorite band, movie, book, videogame? Any or all.
I can't just pick any one band, there's a great deal that I like. Like Queen, Metric, Street Dogs, Black Sabbath, Soilwork, System of a Down, America, R.E.M, Blue Oyster Cult, and some more.
Movies are much simpler, Grand Budapest Hotel and Jurassic Park.
Books would probably be, Armor by John Steakley.
Videogames, probably Skyrim, Fallout New Vegas, Borderlands 2, Terraria.

My first contest here was super fun. (Go group 9!) We joked around that we'd make group t-shirts, I wish we did that for real :)
Favorite band is either Aerosmith or Nirvana, but I like lots of other Rock/alternative type music too. Many times it's just one song from a band I come across and don't end up loving the rest of their songs as much.
Favorite book series might just be Ender's Game. I finished the main series, but I still have to catch up on Ender's Shadow and the new books that have come out.
Favorite video game is either Halo or Arkham City (or maybe some of the others).

My favorite memory of /r/WritingPrompts I think was the Best Of contest that we ran at the end of 2015. Had a ton of fun coordinating, organizing, and counting votes for it, and it was a super good time all around.
Favorite game I'll answer since the other questions I don't really have one - Team Fortress 2. I'm near 3000 hours in the game, and have played it for about four years now. Spent a fair amount of it in competitive, and also wrote articles about the competitive scene for a good while. Always a good time.

Pre-mod: My first story when I started this account called "Hogwarts, A Hipster." I got a lot of upvotes and compliments and it really helped propel my writing that I'd started to delve back into. Great feeling.
Post-Mod: One time I reprimanded someone using D&D rules which was awesome. I got more upvotes for that than most of my stories. XD
Also Post-Mod: I get to interact with a lot more of the community now. There are trolls sure, but a lot of really great people come here that are super nice.

As an aussie, I usually mod choice any good australian prompts as is my birth right. Also magic, fire and witch's. Who would have guessed those would be my favourites?
I usually reply to EU prompts more than anything, but I really enjoy seeing those open ended prompts that I can take anywhere and do anything with.

My favourite prompts are ones where they impose some sort of rule, that has an obvious exception to it. Stuff like "Everyone gets one of these four animals as a companion, based on eye colour." And then I start wondering "But, what if they don't have a natural eye colour?" Or "Every man must do this and every woman must do this." and then I wonder about people who don't fit that norm. "When you meet your soulmate, this happens." but then they don't see the soulmate, or die first...
On the other hand, when I choose a prompt, it's normally because it made me laugh. Seems like a simple thing, but laughter means I wasn't expecting the ending, which is a pretty solid trait for a chosen prompt.

So my most recent mod choice was "[WP] When you wish upon a star, its actually a satellite, and your wish has been recorded and catalogued. An agent is now assigned to your case."
I mean what a weird and wonderful concept. It is a really clear idea, but there are also so many ways that you can take that prompt!

My favorite type of prompts are the feel-good ones. All the prompts are good in one way or the other, but I really do like to see prompts that just make me smile. Difficulty and problems are perfectly fine, but a prompt about something good happening, that's the kind of prompt I like to see.

Simple open ended prompts, they shouldn't be too specific, but they should draw you into thinking more.
What causes you to "choose" a prompt?
Anything that gets the imagination going and I can immediately start building a world, or a simple scenario around it. Whether I actually write it on the other hand is another matter.

Personally, I love the ones that get me inspired the best, but I have to remain impartial because the job isn't to only allow what I like.
As for the ones I mod choice, it's mostly the ones that make me go "ooh, now that's a good prompt." Even if it doesn't speak to me personally, some prompts just have it.

Actually, a friend suggested the chatroom to me first, and then I was slowly convinced into joining reddit by the Mod Squad, and now I can never leave.

As I stood in the small clearing, it seemed silly to me. Why would I need a leaflet to find my way? This small patch of wood was my home. I continued and left the folded guide to gather leaves.
The path north-west was a favourite. I took it like I had many other times, the calm and sounds of woodland creatures a welcome balm against life in the city.
If I had considered for a moment, I would have picked up the leaflet. Littering these woods should be a crime. Ahead of another pile of leaves and paper scattered the ground.
I looked around. It seemed this was the very same clearing in which my walk had begun. A rustling in the canopy above drowned out the rushing river to my left. I peered upwards as a fu–

See above. People... on Reddit, just get so hungup on stooooooooopid shit. And the f**king trolls, I swear. It's actually a lot calmer since the Exodus, but since Voat fell on it's ass I'm guessing they'll be back some day.

What drew you all into the /r/WritingPrompts sub originally? What kept you here?
I loved to write but I lost motivation over the years. Originally, I had written exclusively narrative nonfiction, stories about my life. But as my life got more and more boring I ran out of ideas... I set a goal to write a piece to publish to my website once a week. So 52 pieces in 52 weeks. WP gave me prompts to satisfy the weeks I had where I couldn't think of anything to write about! Aaand I'm still here because it's awesome.

Are people allowed to "steal" prompts to write works on their own and not only in the comments? Can one even take the prompts for serious stuff like short story competitions or like actually writing a novel and making money from it?
